Drinking Water Week brings H20 into spotlight

Areyou abig water drinker?

Waterisoneof the most valuablenatural resourceson theplant, anddrinking waterserves avitalroleindailylife –“serving anessential purpose tohealth, hydrationandhygiene needs,” aspromotedbytheState of Alabamagovernor’s office.Gov.Kay Ivey proclaimedthe week of May 5-11 asDrinking Water Week in Alabamatocall attentiontothe value of drinking water. That’s aninitiative we cangetbehind.Here’swhy. Accordingtothe announcement for DrinkingWater Week, the AlabamaDepartment of PublicHealthpoints out tapwater deliverspublic healthprotection, fire protection, supportforthe economyand qualityof life. Additionally, when communitiesinvest incommunity water fluoridation, thereisan average estimated return oninvestment of $20in dentaltreatmentcosts for every$1 in mostcities, accordingtotheADPH.

Thegovernor’s office furtherpointsoutthathard work isperformed daily by theentirewater sector –whether designing capitalprojects, ensuring thesafetyandqualityof drinking waterormaintainingtheinfrastructure communities likeours rely on totransport high-quality drinking waterfromits sourcerightto your faucet. AccordingtotheCenters forDiseaseControl, the UnitedStateshasoneof thesafest andmostreliabledrinking watersystemsinthe world–that’s somethingtobethankful for!Every year, millionsof peoplelivinginthe United States gettheirtapwater

from apubliccommunity watersystem. Thedrinking water thatissuppliedtoour homescomesfromeither asurface waterorground watersource.Surface watercollectsinstreams, rivers, lakesand reservoirs.Ground wateris waterlocatedbelow the ground whereitcollects inporesandspaceswithin rocksandinunderground aquifers –accessed by drilling wellsandpumpingittothe surface.

Allofusare –orshould be –stewardsofthe water infrastructureupon which currentandfuturegenerationsdepend. Since childhood, we have heard

about theimportance ofprotectingour water sources and thetravesty that takesplace when they arethreatenedorpolluted. DuringDrinking Water Week,Alabamiansare urged to help protect source waters frompollution, practice water conservationand familiarizethemselves withthe valueofdrinking water. We have beautifulbodies of waterin andaround FranklinCountythat remindusof water’s importance.Asyoupass by in yourcar, cast aline or take yourboatout this week, maybe Drinking WaterWeekwillcome to mind!
