TheRussellvillePublic Librarysummerreading program,fullysponsored byPilgrim’stothetuneof $4,200,willkick offJune 14.

“I’msoexcitedtowork withtheteamatPilgrim’s forthethirdyearin arow foroursummerreading program,”explainedRPL directorJoshlynBowen. “Theirsupporttakesthe programming limitations offofusandallowsusto create asummerreading programthatcaptivates thecommunityinan impactfulway. Theyarea wonderfulpart ofthiscommunity.”

Thisyear’sevents includeabouncehouse, facepainting,the Russellvilleicecream truck, amagician,a toucha-truckprogram,readingwithdogs, aFranklin CountyExtensionprogramand,forthefinale,a varietyofanimalstosee upclose.

Gov.KayIveyhas

announceda$500,000grant forwaterlineupgradesto support agrowingindustrialbaseinthecityof RedBay.

TheRedBayWater andGasBoardwilluse thefundsfromthe AppalachianRegional Commissiontoinstalla newwaterlinetosupply thecity’sindustrialpark aswellasmanynearby households.

“Iampleasedto announcethisgrantto modernizeandenhance waterservicetobothcommercialandresidential customersinRed Bay,” Iveysaid.“Icommendthe

localleaderswhochampionedthisprojectandlook forwardtoitsmanybenefits,includingsustained localeconomicdevelopmentandreliablewater servicetothe arearesidents.”

Thegrantwillenable theRed BayWaterand GasBoardtoinstall 11,530feetofwatermain toreplaceanexisting waterlinethatismore than70yearsold.This upgradewill affect2,042 oftheboard’sresidential accounts,212commercial accountsand32industrialaccounts.Theboard willsupplytheremaining $2.3millionfortheproject,whichisthefirstof threein acomprehensive

infrastructureplanfor the industrialpark.

TheAlabama DepartmentofEconomic andCommunityAffairs administersthe ARCprograminAlabama.

“Replacingthisold waterlineis abigstep intherightdirectionfor theRedBay areaand the industrieslocatedthere,” ADECADirectorKenneth Boswellsaid.“ADECAis pleasedtopartner with Gov.Ivey,RedBayleadersandtheAppalachian Regional Commissionto helpbringthisprojectto fruition.”

hadbeen approved.

ARCisan economic developmentagencyofthe federalgovernmentand 13state governments.The agency’smissionistoinnovate,partner and investto buildcommunitycapacity and strengtheneconomic growthinAppalachiato helptheregionachieve socioeconomicparitywith thenation. Thirty-seven Alabamacounties,includingFranklinCounty,are part of the ARCregionand eligibleforfunds.

AFWC holds129th annualconvention

TheGFWCAlabama FederationofWomen’s Clubheld its129th annualconvention at the MarriottPrattvilleHotel andConferenceCenterin Prattville,Alabama, April 18-20.GFWCAlabama hostedthe eventalong with GFWCAlabama SouthDistrict. “It’sgreattobehere,” saidYorkPhilashemet andmingledwithPC residents.Hesaidhehad originallyhopedtovisit afewyearsago,during theyearhe turned 50,but theCOVID-19pandemic hinderedthoseplans. Althoughthetimeline hadtochange,itnever changed hisintentionto onedaycometothetown thatshareshisname.

“Obviously Iwasquite excited togothere,”York Philsaid. Hereceivedhis signfromBrooklynPhil ontheverydayofhis50th birthday,andhepropped itonthewindowsillin his homeoffice.“Everytime Iwouldlookatit, Iwould think,‘Itdoesn’tbelong

TheYorkCampbells hadbeen totheU.S. before–onceto NewYork andonceon aroad trip throughout theWest, visiting places likeSan Francisco, LosAngeles, theGrandCanyon, YosemiteNational Park andSequoia National Park.This,however, wastheirfirsttripto theSoutheast. YorkPhil saidtheyflew into New Yorkand spentthree days therebeforeflyinginto Birminghamandmaking theirwayup toFranklin County.

TownCouncilman Phillip King wasamong thoseon handtogreetthe YorkCampbellsduring theirvisit.“Theycame alongway,”Kingnoted –morethan4,200miles. “WewelcomePhiland his family...Wearevery proud.”

Makinghismarkin PhilCampbellhistoryas the51st PhilCampbell–andthefirstfromCanada – tovisitthetown,traveling2,206milestoget there,“CanadaPhil” -or “NewfoundlandPhil”wasrecognizedin aceremonyinthetownpark May3.

Newfoundlandisthe provinceinCanadawhere heresidesinStephenville. CampbelllivedinBritish Columbia,themostwesternprovinceinCanada for25yearsbeforereturningtoStephenville,which islocatedonthewestcoast oftheCanadianprovince ofNewfoundlandand Labrador,wherehe’sbeen since2017.It’s atownhe estimatestobeof apopulationof6-7,000,whichhe notesistheformerhome of aUnitedStatesairbase.

“Itwasanexciting dayfortheTownofPhil Campbell,”saidPhil CampbellmayorMichael McQuary.“Wewere pleasedtohaveandwelcomeourfirstCanadian

namedPhilCampbellto town.Itisamazinghow many peopleare named PhilCampbell,andweare alwaysreadytowelcome them.”

ColinPhilipCampbell received acertificatecommemoratingtheoccasion, andthecustomary“Phil” T-shirt,grantinghimhonorarycitizenshipofthe TownofPhilCampbell. Campbellsaid hefelt“so honored”toberecognized in thisway,notingsome degreeof“surprise”anda “littlebitof shock,”which he describedaspositives.

“I’msogratefulto themforsettingthisup,” Campbell continued, referringtohiscousins, TrishandJeanie,the daughtersofhisfather’s oldersister.“Thisreceptionisoverwhelming,and I’mhonoredtobehere.”

Hiscousin,Patricia “Trish”Barnes”saidshe hadn’tseenhimin21 yearswhen shefoundout hewouldbevisiting. “I calledmysisterandsaid wehadtomakethishappen,”Barnesadded.

McQuarysaid thetown will have theirsecond Canadian Phil visit next month.“We will haveour second Canadian inJune atourfestival,”headded. “It means alot forthe towntohave thesepeople comeand visit. Ithelpsget thetown recognitionso others willwant to come andvisit.Wearevery proudofour town andour heritage.”
