We Say

Withsummerless than amonth away, the timeis uponus forjuicytomatoes, fresh greenbeans, crisp corn andother flavorfulhomegrownfruits and veggiesofallkinds. Thankfully, Franklin Countyhas threeofficial sourcesfor locallygrown produce, and we want to encourage youtosupport them thisseason.

Ourcountyboasts three farmersmarkets wherelocal growers canmaketheirproducts availabletothe public. There’sone in Russellville, adjacent to theA.W.ToddCentre; one in RedBay,attheFun Park;and, anadditionin recent years, one inPhil Campbell, acasual set-up inthe empty lotacross from TownHall. Eachmarketisopen multipledays aweek throughout the growing season toprovidefresh, homegrownfruitsand veggiesto ourcommu-

nity.

Local farmerssetup to sell all kinds ofyummy produce. Youreallycan’t beatafreshly harvested potato, beanor cucumber –one that wasjustpulled outofthe ground, from justdown theroad. We need topatronizethese markets andtakeadvantage of thelocallygrown items.

Thesefarmersareour friendsandneighbors, and when they sell usa

melon, some okra ora zucchini, we knowexactly whereitcamefrom. As recentlyasafew hours ago, it wasstill rooted in warm north Alabama soil. As abonus, our hard-earned dollarsgo to supportthepeoplein ourcommunity –which enables themto continue intheircritical agricultural endeavors.

Localmarkets arecoordinated by the Franklin CountyExtension, so we

want to extendour thanks totheExtension formaking surewehaveasource forthisfreshgoodness. Inaddition to offeringa wide varietyoffresh produceand canned items, the markets alsohost special eventslikedrawings forgiveaways and Tomato SandwichDay.

Don’tforget the assets we have rightherein FranklinCountyinthe form ofourlocal farmers markets.
