According to History.com, Father’sDaywas first celebrated inthe United States morethan110 years ago– June19,1910, in thestate of Washington. It wasnot until1972, however, thattheday honoring fathersbecame anationwideholidayin theUnitedStates, thanks to aproclamationfrom then-presidentRichard Nixon. ThisSundayisFather’s

Day. It’s aday when we rememberthatsharing timewith ourfathersand reflectingonhow much theyhave done forus inourlivesiscrucially important.

Formanyofus, our firstword–andour own children’sfirst word –wasDada.Ofcourse, there’sthe age-olddebate as to whether they’re calling Daddy’snameor justspeaking theeasiest syllable, butlet’sgive Dad thewinonthis one.

As their childrengrow, theDadasofthe worldhelp shapesomanyimportant moments.Their influence isfeltastheycheeron

their young athletes; attend openingnightsof balletrecitalsandpiano concerts andart exhibits; teachcruciallessonsfrom howtotie atie, tohow to drive, to howtoopena bankaccount; sharetheir wisdomand their humor; in essence, as theyshow their childrenhowtofind their wayinthe world. We want to salute the fathers of Franklin County whoare having suchanimpactonour community by raisingthe children whowilloneday beitsleaders. Notevery childis fortunatetohaveDad in his orher life.Luckily, it’s

notjustbiological fathers whocan bethatshoulder toleanon –thathandto hold –thatrolemodel that we all need. Those whodon’thaveagreat dadaround mightlook to aloving grandfather, uncle, bigbrother, coach, teacher, neighboror church member to fillthat roleintheirlives. Take timethisSunday, oranyday, totell the fatherorfather-figure in your life what hemeans to you. It’ssoeasytolet time go by without evergiving voicetothe appreciation youhave, butwe’re sure anyfather-figure would begladtohearthe words.
