OPINION
Juneteenthdeservesyour attention
Who amongus doesn’t loveagoodholiday?
People’sfavoritesvary, ofcourse.Accordingto Statista, acompanythat sharesstatistics, reports andinsights fromaround theworld,Thanksgiving topsthe listfor Americans. It’s closely followed byMemorial Day,Christmas, Veterans Day andMother’sDay.
Further down Statista’slist arebeloved celebrations likeEaster, Halloween, New Year’s Eve and St.Patrick’s Day.Stillother lesser favorites includeMartin LutherKing,Jr. Day, Father’sDayandLabor Day.Least-loved, accordingtoStatista, areApril Fool’sDay at 49percent and theMuslim observances of Ramadanat37 percent andEid al-Adha at24percent.
Juneteenth,which becamea nationalholiday in2021,didn’tmakethe listatall.
A combinationofthe words“June”and“nineteenth,” Juneteenth becameanofficialfederalholidayJune 17, 2021,thanksto ameasure signed by PresidentJoe Biden.
Althoughitslegacy asa national holiday isshort, Juneteenthhas alonghistoryofbeingcelebrated byat least aportionofthe
population –dating back to June 19,1865. The holidaycommemoratestheday when enslavedpeople inGalveston,Texas, learnedtheyhadbeen freed— fullytwoyears aftertheEmancipation Proclamationwas issued duringtheCivilWar.
As the National Parks Servicepageexplains, PresidentAbraham Lincoln’sEmancipation Proclamation was not immediatelyenforceable inslaveholding areas still under Confederaterule. AsUnion troopsmoved through theSouth, they broughtthenewsof emancipationwiththem–andthe abilitytoenforce the order throughmilitarymight. In April1865, Confederate Gen.Robert E. Lee surrenderedtoGen. UlyssesS.Grantafter the Battle ofAppomattox Courthouse inVirginia, butitwasnot until June 2,1865,thatConfederate Gen.EdmundKirby Smithsurrendered the Trans-Mississippi West, makingwayfor troopsto land atGalveston, Texas, andconfirmthenewsthat theCivilWarhadended andenslavedAfrican Americans werenowfree.
“Intheyearsbefore Granger’slanding, news oftheproclamationwas slowto reachTexas and didnotreach some quarters at all,” explainsthe NPS. “In otherplaces, thenewswashidden byslaveholderstopreserveslavery.Oneof Granger’s first acts was to announcefreedom forAfricanAmericans.”
So “Juneteenth”got its start as acelebration therein Galveston. It grewduringtheyearsfollowing theCivilWar,with many formerlyenslaved AfricanAmericansand theirdescendantsmakinganniversary pilgrimages toGalveston. Although the13th Amendment totheU.S. Constitution in December 1865 ultimately abolished slavery in allareasof the nation, Juneteenthcapturedthejubilationof the endofslavery in the Confederacy. As expressedby Juneteenth.com, the holiday“commemorates AfricanAmerican freedomand emphasizes education andachievement. Itis aday,a week, and in someareas, amonth markedwith celebrations, guest speakers, picnics andfamily gatherings. It is atimefor reflectionand rejoicing.Itisa timefor assessment, self-improve-
mentandforplanning the future.”
It’s evenbeencalled ourcountry’s“second IndependenceDay.”
According tothe 2020 Census,25.8percentof Alabama’spopulation is AfricanAmerican. FranklinCounty’spercentagecomesinnear thebottom, amongall Alabamacounties,at 4.5percent. Butthisday isn’tjust forAfrican Americans. It’sfor allof us.It’sthe anniversaryof the endofadarkperiod in ourhistory– ahistory thatbelongstoallof us.
TheNational Museum ofAfricanAmerican History andCulturenotes thatalthough Juneteenth haslongbeencelebrated in AfricanAmericancommunities, itstill remains largely unknowntomany Americans. But that’s changing –andwecan bepartofthat. GiveJuneteenthyour attention thisyear.
