It’s beenheating upoutside forthepast several weeks, but nowit’s official:It’s summertimein Alabama.

Formostofus, it’stime forfun in the sun, for gatherings and traveling, forsoakingup theseason. Summer getsusoutto greatlocaldestinations likethe BearCreekLakes, community splashpads, downtownshopping and youthsportscomplexes. It’s atimeoflate-night milkshakeruns, early morningbicyclerides, long evenings on the frontporch andmaking memories we willcarry foryearstocome.

As yougoout to enjoy FranklinCounty –and beyond –overthenext coupleofmonths, we hope youwill keep safety inmind.

Wear alife jacket. Don’t swim alone.Havea fire extinguishernearby when grilling. Keep your first aid kit stocked. Thesearejust afew of thebasic safetymeasures that canmakesure summer is atimeof safe funinthesun.

We’re not trying to bring doom andgloom tothefunof summer.Wejustwanteveryone to safely enjoywhatthisseason hastooffer.

Loadupon sunscreen and bugspray. Stay hydrated. Keep cool by wearinglightcolorsand taking frequent breaks out of thesun.Besure to checkonpetsand neighbors, especially those whomightbe particularly susceptible toheat-related injuries andillnesses. celebratesAlzheimer’s and BrainAwarenessMonth

JuneisAlzheimer’s andBrain Awareness Month. TheAlzheimer’s Associationestablished theAlzheimer’sand Brain AwarenessMonthin 2014to encourageeveryone totake chargeof theirbrain health.

TheAlzheimer’s Associationis aworldwide voluntaryhealth organizationdedicatedto Alzheimer’scare, support andresearch. Its mission isto lead the way toend Alzheimer’sandotherforms ofdementiabyaccelerating global research, risk reduction, earlydetection

andmaximizingquality careand support.

TheAlzheimer’s Associationmade the followingsuggestionsto takechargeof brain health.

•Incorporate healthy habitsthatmay reduce cognitive decline.

•Beproactive in addressingmemory, thinking problemsand discussingthem witha doctor.

•Learnearly warning signsofcognitive decline suchasaltered judgment, mood changes, memory lossandchallenges in decision-making,planning andcarryingout projects. Some memory changescan be anormalpartofaging butwhen changes startto interfere withdailyliving, it’s best to getchecked.

TheexistingAlzheimer’s Accountability Act isset to expirein2025.There aretwobillsinCongress

which are veryimportant to families with Alzheimer’s -the NationalAlzheimer’s Project Actand the Alzheimer’s Accountability andInvestmentAct. Because theGeneral Federation of Women’s Clubsarededicatedto enhancing thelives of others throughvolunteer service, theyareadvocates of advocacyeffortsfor awareness and research.

Ifpassed, this legislation wouldreauthorizeprograms and increase federal research funding to ensure that individualsliving with Alzheimer’s andother formsofdementia, aswell astheir caregivers, would have access tobetterquality care and supportservices. Thepersonal andfinancial tollcan be overwhelming to families, businesses andour healthcaresystem.

Thebipartisan Alzheimer’sAccountability

and InvestmentAct(H.R. 620,S.134)wouldcontinueto prioritize Alzheimer’s and otherdementiaresearch fundingat theNational Institutes of Health. Withsteadyinvestment, scientistswillbeableto workfastertoadvance basic disease knowledge, exploreways to reduce risk, uncovernewmethods forearlydiagnosis and drug targeting and develop potential treatments. Nearlyseven million Americans areliving with Alzheimer’s. By 2050,this numberis projectedto rise to around 13 million. Auburn, Tuscaloosa will no longer host Super 7football championships

The Al abama High School Athletic Association(AHSAA), incoordination with the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburnand Opelika, haveagreed to remove theUniversityof Alabama’s BryantDenny Stadiumand AuburnUniversity’s Jordan-HareStadium fromthe Super 7high school football championshipshost siterotation.”

The action became necessary becauseof thenewexpandedcollegefootballplayoffplan that could require both schoolstohost playoff games in thefuture, whichwould conflict withtheAHSAA’sannual Super 7footballchampionships.

“Wearegrateful to the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburnand Opelika, AuburnUniversity, the University ofAlabama, TuscaloosaTourism and Sports andAuburnOpelika Tourism for joiningtogether to host our Super 7since the rotationbegan in 2009,” said AHSAAexecutive directorAlvin Briggs. “Theexperiencesand memories providedfor ourmember schools, the teams, theirstudents andcommunitieshave been immeasurable. Weunderstand, however, theconflicts that willbe unavoidable in thefuturebasedonthe expanded CFAplayoff structureand format.” Briggs said that Birminghamand Protective Stadium, which hosts the Super 7championships next December, will remain in the AHSAA Super7 hostrotation, and the AHSAA is continuing to studyother rotation optionsaswell.

Thecities’ leaders agreed that participating in the Super7 championships taught them muchaboutthe AHSAA’seducationbased athleticexperience.

“TheSuper 7exposesourstate tothe bestofAlabama,” said RoyAnders, mayorof theCity ofAuburn. “Talented youth, dedicatedcoaches, outstanding administrators, devotedfamilies, and faithful communities… It’sbeen agreat responsibility to hostthis celebrationofall that is greatabout the Stateof Alabama.Wewishall thebestforthefutureof the Super7.” Briggs said the AHSAA isindebted to itsSuper 7partners.

“Having two of the nation’sbiggestrivals come togetherwiththeir citiestoprovidethe opportunity of alifetime forourmember schools is pricelessand we can’t thankthem enough.

“What we have been abletodowithour championshipsthanksto the cooperationof such rivalshasbeenenvied in other states and seta wonderful example for allofus.”
