Auburn, Tuscaloosa will no longer host Super 7football championships
ByBartMoss
The Al abama High School Athletic Association(AHSAA), incoordination with the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburnand Opelika, haveagreed to remove theUniversityof Alabama’s BryantDenny Stadiumand AuburnUniversity’s Jordan-HareStadium fromthe Super 7high school football championshipshost siterotation.”
The action became necessary becauseof thenewexpandedcollegefootballplayoffplan that could require both schoolstohost playoff games in thefuture, whichwould conflict withtheAHSAA’sannual Super 7footballchampionships.
“Wearegrateful to the cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburnand Opelika, AuburnUniversity, the University ofAlabama, TuscaloosaTourism and Sports andAuburnOpelika Tourism for joiningtogether to host our Super 7since the rotationbegan in 2009,” said AHSAAexecutive directorAlvin Briggs. “Theexperiencesand memories providedfor ourmember schools, the teams, theirstudents andcommunitieshave been immeasurable. Weunderstand, however, theconflicts that willbe unavoidable in thefuturebasedonthe expanded CFAplayoff structureand format.” Briggs said that Birminghamand Protective Stadium, which hosts the Super 7championships next December, will remain in the AHSAA Super7 hostrotation, and the AHSAA is continuing to studyother rotation optionsaswell.
Thecities’ leaders agreed that participating in the Super7 championships taught them muchaboutthe AHSAA’seducationbased athleticexperience.
“TheSuper 7exposesourstate tothe bestofAlabama,” said RoyAnders, mayorof theCity ofAuburn. “Talented youth, dedicatedcoaches, outstanding administrators, devotedfamilies, and faithful communities… It’sbeen agreat responsibility to hostthis celebrationofall that is greatabout the Stateof Alabama.Wewishall thebestforthefutureof the Super7.” Briggs said the AHSAA isindebted to itsSuper 7partners.
“Having two of the nation’sbiggestrivals come togetherwiththeir citiestoprovidethe opportunity of alifetime forourmember schools is pricelessand we can’t thankthem enough.
“What we have been abletodowithour championshipsthanksto the cooperationof such rivalshasbeenenvied in other states and seta wonderful example for allofus.”
