Russellville
Golden Tigers
This time of year every high school football team is ready to cash in on the hot hours spent in the August sun by strapping on their helmets and hitting an opponent. That is especially true for Russellville, which hasn’t faced another school since losing to Hartselle in the third round of the playoffs. Instead of playing in a spring jamboree, the Golden Tigers held an intra-squad scrimmage. New head coach Michael Jackson is also eager to see what his players can do against another team. Jackson said the team has made several improvements since spring practice and they are ready for the season to begin. In addition to its opponents, Russellville will also be facing several critics when the season begins. The Golden Tigers were not ranked in the preseason poll and many football fans across northwest
Alabama expect a lackluster season from Russellville. In a reversal of fortunes, the Golden Tigers are looking at the polls as outsiders while region rival Muscle Shoals is enjoying the No. 9 spot in Class 5A. The drop from the polls is not without reason. Russellville lost several players who were key in putting together three years of deep playoff runs. Three of those players will be playing on Saturdays this fall after signing Division I scholarships. Despite the loss of those players, Jackson is confident his team can continue the tradition of success at Russellville. The Golden Tiger faithful are also eager to see what this team can do. The last time everybody expected Russellville to fail — the 2008 season — the Golden Tigers reached the state championship game. Fans want to know if the 2011 Russellville football team can pull off the same magical run.
AHSAA Class 5A, Region 8 2010 Record: 11-2
COACH
M i c h a e l J a c k s o n —This is his first season at Russellville and his 10th season overall. Jackson is a former Golden Tiger player and previously coached at Buckhorn. He has a career regular-season record of 53-47. His overall playoff record is 6-4.

Phil Campbell
Bobcats
Last season the Phil Campbell football team was an experienced squad featuring 16 seniors, but the Bobcats will not have that kind of leadership when they take the field in 2011. This year’s team has only five seniors, but that doesn’t worry head coach Bo Culver, because the juniors are entering their third season in his system. “The juniors were freshmen when I got here,” Culver said. “I’m excited about what we’ve got.” The Bobcats will have the challenge of replacing a potent passing attack. Gone are quarterback Corey Alexander and receivers Dylan Rice — an All-State Honorable Mention last season — as well as Jake Dill and Jordan Benford. Tyson Sumerel takes over at quarterback. Culver said Sumerel has a good understanding of the offense after backing up Alexander last year and that should help the offense
click. Jamie Dorroh is projected to be the Bobcats’ top receiving target. Culver said he possesses good speed and is a playmaker. The only skill player returning that accounted for a good chunk of the offense last season is running back Craig Saint. “He’s as strong as an ox,” Culver said. “When he wants to, he can bowl people over.” Anchoring the offensive line will be center Trevor Allison, who missed most of last season with an injury. Culver said Allison is eager to get on the field during his senior season. Defensively, the Bobcats will also have to recover from heavy losses. Dorroh will provide some experience in the secondary, but Colton Vickery and Kody Ortiz are first-year players. Brady Whitten, which Culver describes as a hard-nosed, tough-as-nails player, is a threeyear starter at linebacker. Austin Mercer will help anchor the defensive line.

COACH
B o C u l v e r —This is his third season at Phil Campbell. He has a 7-13 career record. Culver led the Bobcats to a 3-7 record in 2009 and a 4-6 record in 2010. Phil Campbell was 25 in region play both years.

Red Bay Tigers Red Bay football coach Dale Jeffreys said there are several reasons for fans to get excited about the Tigers’ 2011 season. The team has a starting quarterback with two previous years of starting experience and the defense will be in the second year of a system that put up impressive numbers in 2010. “Last year we were four plays away from finishing 9-1,” Jeffreys said. “We have a lot more playmakers this year who can make those plays.” While the Tigers have some playmakers on the roster, there is one area they must avoid to have a good season — turnovers. “We can’t make mistakes and turn the ball over,” Jeffreys said. “That is what killed us last year.” While the Tigers lost a couple of running backs, there are several experienced players returning to the offense. Hunter Childers will be quarterbacking Red Bay for the third straight season while junior Matt Bellue will be the feature running back. Childers will have a trio of speedy receivers to
throw to in Dmitri Humphrey, Taylor Ozbirn and Austin Humphries. Seniors Ethan Blanton and Chance Wooten will anchor the offensive line. Defensively, senior Bradley Patterson and Belue will give Red Bay a pair of strong defense ends. The linebacking corps is also experienced with juniors Steven Wood and Justin Payne along with senior Kyle Robbins. Humphrey and Ozbirn will also play in the secondary for the Tigers. The experience Red Bay has will be crucial if the Tigers want to extend their playoff streak to 13 years. While there is quite a bit of experience, Jeffreys said there would not be as many players seeing time on both offense and defense. That means there will be some young players on the field for Red Bay, but that does not worry Jeffreys. “We’re playing more kids, who have been playing since they were younger,” Jeffreys said. “We are looking forward to seeing what they can do.”

Tharptown Usually the second year of a coach’s tenure with a program is a little smoother than the first year. Players have had a year to absorb the new system and are more familiar with what the coach expects. Tharptown’s Bill Smith faces a tough situation during his second season with the Wildcats. Tharptown lost 10 seniors from last year’s team, and will only have 18 varsity players in 2011. “The numbers are not good,” Smith said. “But we’ve got good kids and I expect a lot out of them.” One of the problems many fans will notice is that most of the skill players from last season are gone. Multiple threat players such as Jacob Parker and Brandon Cothrum will no longer be suiting up for the Wildcats this fall. Kelby Hallmark, Nick Long and Timothy Bryant will all take turns at different positions to give Tharptown the best match-ups each week. While there will be some quality athletes at the skill positions, Smith said there is one area of the offense that he is unsure about.
Wildcats
“The question is the line,” Smith said. “The offensive line wasn’t strong last year.” William Washington and Brian George will be the anchors on the line. With only 18 players, Tharptown will have to play many members of the team on offense and defense, so the line could be a problem on that side of the ball as well. The Wildcats gave up several long runs to opponents last season, a problem that led to some lopsided losses. “We hope to improve on defense this year,” Smith said. Hallmark will be in the secondary to protect against the pass and Bryant will be at linebacker to try and stop the run. Smith is hoping the defense will come together by the opening game against Meek, a team that had several long runs against the Wildcats last year. The summer workouts did not go as well as Smith would have liked, but he is pleased with the effort in fall camp. “The players are out in the heat working hard,” Smith said.
AHSAA Class 1A, Region 8 2010 Record: 2-8
COACH
B i l l S m i t h — This is Smith’s second year as the Wildcats’ head coach. He guided Tharptown to a 2-8 record his first season. Tharptown is the fourth high school football program in Franklin County he has coached.

V i n a Red Devils Being one of the smallest public schools in the state can present a few problems, especially when you are trying to put together a football team. Vina is feeling the crunch this fall, as the Red Devils have only 15 varsity players. It hurts even more that Vina lost seven seniors from last year’s team. Head coach James Pharr is making the best of the situation though and is not allowing the players to use the small roster as an excuse not to work hard. “We’ve got to count on our seniors and skill players to do something,” Pharr said. “When called on, they have to make a play.” Fortunately for the Red Devils, many of the skill players from last season are back. Quarterback Nick Schmittou and wide receivers Adam Pharr and Clay Pierce, as well as running back Ethan Pharr, give the Red Devils quite a bit of experience. The biggest holes Vina needs to fill are
along the offensive and defensive lines, but Pharr has faith in the players he has and said Casey Poores, Blake Townsend and Adam Wilson will do a good job on the lines. While the low numbers do present a challenge — Pharr decided not to play a fall jamboree game to reduce the likelihood of injuries — Pharr said he sees some good signs in his team. “They are coachable this year,” Pharr said. “They are also in better shape than last year.” Pharr said being in shape will be the key to Vina’s success this season and a good way to prevent injuries. The Red Devils get a good dose of conditioning drills everyday at the end of practice to make sure they are fit when the season starts. Pharr said he likes the effort he has seen from his team this fall. “They are few in numbers, but they look like they can play,” Pharr said. “I am proud of them.”
AHSAA Class 1A, Region 8 2010 Record: 2-8
COACH
J a m e s P h a r r —This is Pharr’s second season as the head coach of the Red Devils. He is the principal of Vina High School and has been an assistant coach for the team. He guided the Red Devils to a 2-8 record in 2010, including a 2-5 record in region play.

The Marching Hundred
Contributed For the past several years, the Russellville High School Marching Hundred has taken crowds on a rock ‘n’ roll musical experience during their halftime performances, but Band Director Gary McNutt said they planned to change things up this year. During this year’s season, the Marching Hundred’s show will be a tribute to the victims and first-responders of September 11 on the 10-year anniversary of the tragedy. The show tunes will include New-York themed songs like the popular “New York, New York,” as sung by Liza Minelli; “On Broadway;” music from “On the Town;” and the hit song from popular R&B singer Alicia Keys called “Empire State of Mind.” McNutt said they also have a patriotic tribute planned involving some of the local firemen and policemen. Lions facing challenge in depleted GSC Terry Bowden Photo
Depending on your point of view, the University of North Alabama’s road to a Gulf South Conference title in 2011 has never been easier — or more difficult. After all of the Arkansasbased members of the conference left, the GSC is barely hanging on with five members playing football. With the Lions having to play fewer conference games, it would be easier for them to go undefeated in the GSC and courtesy of UNA earn the title. Unfortunately for UNA, two of the conference’s best teams — Delta State and Valdosta State — are still in the GSC. DELTA ST. but he will not the big-name receivers he had last year. Even so, UNA coach Terry Bowden thinks the passing attack can be potent. “I like the possibilities even without the great big-name guy,” Bowden said. Relieving some of the pressure from Chapple will be running backs Wes Holland, who ranked eighth in rushing in the GSC last season, and Demetrius Goode, a transfer from the University of Alabama. There are only two returning starters on defense — linebacker John Ware and defensive back Rod Woodson. Just as in previous years, Bowden has boosted the teams needs with Division I transfers. He brought in former Florida defensive back Janoris Jenkins to help out in the secondary.

Alabama’s title hopes could rest on defense Nick Saban
Last year Alabama was so close to posting a third consecutive undefeated regular season. Yes, the Crimson Tide lost to South Carolina, LSU and Auburn, but those three losses were by a combined total of 18 points. Ask any member of the defense and they will be quick to tell you the problem the Tide had last season was finishing games. The loss that stung the most was the 28-27 loss to Auburn in which the Tide let a 24-point lead slip away. Members of the defense will also tell you that not finishing games will not be an issue in 2011. “As a defense we didn’t finish in that Auburn game,” said safety Mark Barron. “Never again will we go out and not finish like we did in that Auburn game.” Linebacker Dont’a Hightower also thinks this year’s defense will not only finish games, but will also go down as one of the best defenses in Alabama history.
“We have one of the most athletic defenses that’s been through Alabama,” Hightower said. “Last year, we lacked the speed part, getting after the quarterback. This year, I think it’s what our defense is about.” The defense will have to play strong for Alabama this season since the offense lost several key components of its recent success. Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram is gone, as is the potent passing combination of Greg McElroy and Julio Jones. The Crimson Tide’s offense is not entirely depleted — running back Trent Richardson is back, and he is getting early talk about being a Heisman favorite. “I love all the expectations,” Richardson said. “At the end of the day I want to live up to that.” If he does live up to the expectations and the defense plays as well as they are capable of doing, Alabama fans might just get what they want this fall — another national championship.

Auburn loses many starters, still optimistic Usually winning a national championship brings a lot of perks to your program. You get a boost in recruiting and you typically get a high ranking in the polls at the start of the next season. While Auburn has not had much problem drawing in recruits in the Gene Chizik era, the Tigers did not get much love from poll voters to start the 2011 campaign. Auburn is ranked No. 19 in the USA Today Poll. The biggest reason for the drop in the poll is the perceived drop in the talent level in Auburn. Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Cam Newton and Lombardi Trophy winning defensive tackle Nick Fairley are both in NFL training camps right now. But they are not the only members of the national championship team missing — Auburn lost 18 starters from last year’s squad. The Tigers lost eight starters on offense, eight on defense and two on special teams.
The Game Plan
Defensive tackle Nosa Eguae, one of the three returning starters on defense, said people are overlooking Auburn. “I think a lot of people in the media, they get misconstrued that being young is a lack of talent, and it’s not at Auburn,” Eguae said. “We have a lot of talent, and come Sept. 3 we’re looking to show off that talent on a stage.” Tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen said it does not bother him that people think the Tigers will have a bad season. “(The off-season workouts) are good like last year. People are underestimating us. It’s where we want to be,” Lutzenkirchen said. “I would rather prove people wrong than prove them right.” The Tigers have a lot of work to do to challenge for the Western Division title, let alone a conference or national title. But one thing Auburn proved repeatedly last year is that the Tigers love the role of the underdog.

Two years removed from a national championship, Alabama is favored as the best team in the SEC despite losing several important players on offense.
“We have one of the most athletic defenses that’s been through Alabama. Last year, we lacked the speed part – getting after the quarterback. This year, I think, it’s what our defense is about. If we can get there faster, that relieves pressure off the defensive backs.” Linebacker Dont’a Hightower
