GOLDEN TIGERS LOOK TO ADD TO SUCCESSFUL HISTORY Story by BRANNON KING | Photos by JOSEPH ROMANS PHOTOGRAPHY

T

Coach John Ritter

I’m very excited about this group. I think we have a lot of ability, and I’m excited to see what they can do on the field.

he Russellville Golden Tigers have had a couple of successful seasons under John Ritter in his first two years as head coach with the school, and the RHS football team is poised to build on experience and take the next step. Russellville finished 2019 with an 8-3 record and made it to the Class 5A playoffs. The Golden Tigers will be looking for the school’s first post-season win since a first-round victory over Guntersville in 2016. This season, the 100th year of Russellville football, is already unlike any other because of challenges of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. “We had a really good summer considering the circumstances and considering all the craziness that is going on in the world,” Ritter shared. “We had outstanding attendance, and our kids showed up and worked hard every day from start to finish – and it’s bled over into fall camp.” RHS is 17-5 with two playoff appearances under Ritter, and he said the players have taken on the identity he and his coaching staff are looking for in the program. “Every group is different, and every team has their own personalities that kind of drive the team,” Ritter said. “From a strength standpoint, we’re really close to where we want to be, and from a numbers standpoint, we’re right at 93 guys. On average, we’ve added 10 guys every year, and that’s what we want.” This year’s Russellville team returns a group of talented players, and one would be wise to watch the offensive line for a key to success. “Offensively, I think we’re a veteran group up front,” Ritter explained. “Of course, Edgar Amaya gets a lot of publicity, but Will Calhoun played a lot of snaps last year, and he’s back. Luis Domingo, Seth Franks and Dakota Andres are guys that played a lot of snaps. Then you throw in Grayson Murray, Josh Frederick and Tal Hamilton, and we’ve got some competition up front, which is really, really good.” Receiver is another position that has players ready to make big contributions. Rowe Gallagher and Cole Barnett are returning senior starters. TJ King came on during the season last year as a freshman and made a big splash. Other players at the position include Florence transfer Banks Langston along with Trey Glass and Daniel Juan Francisco. In the backfield, look for Airreon “Boots” McCulloch to take on a larger role within the offense, and he will be teamed with Caleb Matthews at the running back position for a solid one-two punch. Nathan Brockway and

Peyton Ray are on the roster again this season; both contributed last year on offense from the H/TE spot. Fans should expect to see a couple of quarterbacks share the playing time this season. Jacob Bishop started last season behind center, and his graduation created an opening for junior Gabe Amick and sophomore Conner Warhurst at the position. “They both bring something different to the table that can make us successful,” Ritter noted, “so why not play them both?” Defensively, anywhere from nine to 11 seniors could be on the field for defensive coordinator Chris Balentine this season. “Brooks Scott, Cody and Brody Logan, Marcus Crumpton and Gavin Slay are all guys that played a ton of football last year, and they’re all back,” Ritter said. Ashaad Williams, Caden Watts, Grayson Eady and JD Bishop are the core-four in the secondary, and all return with a lot of experience. The defensive front will be anchored by Angel Moreno and Angel Martinez, along with Omarion Jackson, and Ritter said he is expecting big things out of the defense this year. “I think that’s probably the focal point of this team right now – to be really, really good on defense,” he said. Russellville is scheduled to compete in Class 5A, Region 8 this year, and the RHS head coach said he is looking forward to seeing what his team can accomplish. “I’m very excited about this group. I think we have a lot of ability, and I’m excited to see what they can do on the field.”

RED BAY FINDS CONFIDENCE BEHIND HIGHLY-EXPERIENCED TEAM Story and photos by BART MOSS

I

n Michael Jackson’s seven years at the helm of the Red Bay Tiger football program, he’s had some excellent teams. Last year’s squad won 12 straight games before losing in the third round of the playoffs to Fyffe. The year before, the Tigers went 9-3 and lost in the second round of the playoffs. The past two years Red Bay is 21-4, with two of those losses coming in the playoffs. Why is that significant? Most of this year’s senior class for the Tigers started or had significant playing time in both of those seasons. They are battle-hardened and ready to cap off their final season with nothing short of playing all the way to the end of the season this year. “This is probably the best senior group I have had,” said Jackson. He has 19 seniors. One is a five-year starter, three are four-year starters, and seven are three-year starters. “They have played in a lot of games, and they have won a lot of games. They know what is expected of them. They know what it takes. They have one goal in mind: play in the final game of the high school season.” Red Bay, like all other teams in the state, is having to cope and adjust to the “new normal” of sports in the age of COVID-19. The Tigers are already having to deal with major adjustments to their schedule after Hamilton and Biggersville, Mississippi, had to cancel because of school starting later. “As it stands, our first game now is not until a Sept. 4 region game against Lexington,” Jackson explained. “We are trying to get something worked out before then, but we just don’t know.” Not only is scheduling becoming a challenge, the everyday practice routine is different. “All the major things are different,” said Jackson. “The normal things we would usually do at practice are different. The things we’ve done forever in high school football have changed a bit. We just have to adjust and move on. That is why having a lot of older, experienced guys is helpful. We have to have a lot more contingency plans in place in case we lose some players for multiple weeks due to the virus, so we’ve been working some younger kids in against the older guys to get them where they need to be on the depth chart.” Jackson also said his coaching staff will play a key role through these tough times. “I have a great staff,” said Jackson. “They have been together for a long time. We’ve worked together, and some

have played for me. We know each other well. We all know the expectations, and there is a lot of consistency.” If there is a spot that lacks experience and consistency, it is his offensive line. “The big challenge for us this year will be for our offensive line to gel and come together as a group,” said Jackson. “We will have two new starters on the line. Coach (Taylor) Hamilton does a great job with them.” Another challenge of course, is “to stay healthy” Jackson added. “Depth is always an issue at small schools. This year, more than ever, staying healthy will be key. These kids have missed a lot of work time, being off from midMarch until the first of June.” Despite the tough circumstances shaping this year’s season, Jackson said he is looking forward to seeing how this senior class can wrap up their career at Red Bay. “They are all very competitive. They are a seasoned group,” he said. “They have been in our strength training program for a long time. They are very athletic, and they have played a lot of games. “They don’t want to lose, and they are not taking anything for granted.”

BOBCATS PUTS FOCUS ON DEPTH WITH EYE ON PLAYOFFS Story and photos by BART MOSS

K

evin Barnwell is entering his third season as the head coach of the Phil Campbell Bobcats amid a lot of uncertainty, but he has veteran maturity to help guide his team forward. Phil Campbell is already 1-0 before the season even starts. How? Because Marion County moved the school start date back later, it forced the cancellation of any games played before the school start date. Under the new AHSAA guidelines, those games will count as a forfeit. “That is one of the many things this year we just can’t control,” said Barnwell. “I want our guys to focus on what we can control, and we will deal with things as they come. That is all we can do. We have a lot of older and more mature guys who, I think, can keep us focused on our mission and our goals.” Barnwell said he sees a lot of things to be positive about in this upcoming season. “We’ve got a lot of good skill players,” explained Barnwell. “We still need to wait and see what our identity will be, but we have some of the best team speed we’ve had since I’ve been here. That will take a lot of pressure off Trey (Liendecker) and Luke (Barnwell) in the backfield.” Depth is one of the biggest concerns Barnwell has faced in his tenure at Phil Campbell. He has been working on shoring up that weakness. “Our depth still concerns me,” he said. “We need more linemen on both sides of the ball. I think we have some players coming along who were ninth graders last year and will be in the 10th grade this year that are learning to compete at the level we need them to, to be successful and help this team.” Although no one knows what the future holds for football season, coaches have to plan for uncertainty. Will more games be canceled? Will there be stoppages in practice because of the coronavirus? Barnwell said he is trying to account for those possibilities. “We are trying to create a consistent depth chart and simplify schemes where kids can be more interchangeable if we lose some players for a couple of weeks,” Barnwell explained. That goes for coaches, too. “If I get sick and I’m out for two weeks or more, my staff needs to be able to pick up where we left off without missing a beat,” Barnwell said. “I am working on a blanket practice schedule so we can have some consistency.”

The overall goal, however, is still the same. “We want to get to the playoffs,” said Barnwell. “That is our goal.” One thing Barnwell has really focused on to achieve that goal is the weight room. “I’m tired of getting run over, and the kids should be tired of it too,” Barnwell said. “We have really been focused on getting stronger and more physical, and that just comes from hard work in the weight room and changing our mentality.”

WILDCATS BRACE FOR TOUGH SLATE OF REGION GAMES Story and photos by BART MOSS

evin Lacey is entering his fifth year at the helm of the Tharptown Wildcat football program. While he lost some experienced players, he said he is looking forward to the start of a new season. “We have a lot of good skill guys back,” said Lacey. “We have a good core group that has been here for a while.” Lacey cites seniors Nathan Lucas, Colton Simmons and Hunter White as examples of his optimism. “Nathan Lucas is a big guy,” said Lacey. “He can be a solid lead blocker, and he can run the ball hard. Colton Simmons is a strong and athletic guy who will give you everything he’s got. Hunter White is another athletic player who will be at the running back position for us.” Lacey will also be relying on sophomore Blake Daily at the quarterback position. “Blake hasn’t played the position before,” said Lacey. Despite that, Lacey has positive expectations for the young QB. “He is a big, strong guy who will be able to do some good things with those other guys in the backfield.” The challenge Lacey will face is his depth – “We have a lot of youth on the roster. We lost six guys from last year. We have nine ninth graders that will have to contribute early and often – and the schedule. “It’s tough every year,” said Lacey. “Now we have one of the best teams from Class 1A, Mars Hill, moving into our region with teams like Red Bay, Colbert County and Sheffield. There is no doubt it will be tough. “We want to compete and make it further into games. I feel like we made a lot of progress last year and hopefully we can compete more and improve.” Lacey said he knows that with a limited roster, the coronavirus can have an immediate impact on his team, but he remains optimistic. “I think we can finish the season,” he said. “I really hope we can play all 10 games and everything goes well.”

FORMER COACH RETURNS TO LEAD RED DEVILS AGAIN Story and photos by BART MOSS

T

he Vina Red Devils will have a familiar face on the sidelines this season as Luke Childers steps back into the role he vacated in 2017. Childers is replacing Ben Guin, who stepped down for personal reasons. “I’m looking forward to helping these young men,” said Childers, who served as Vina’s head coach from 2015-2017. “I helped Coach Guin last year, and I’ve played for him, and he was a big help to me.” Childers said he has a young team but a lot of positive energy. “They have had a really good and positive attitude,” said Childers. “They have fun, and they work hard. We are looking forward to the season. We are trying to get a lot of younger kids ready to step up into roles they might not be used to; we are trying to build for the future.” There will be a learning curve this year for the Red Devils, as they field eight new starters on offense and on defense. “We only have three guys who really contributed last year at the varsity level,” said Childers. “Glen Ashely is our lone senior. He will have to take on more of a leadership role. He will be moving to the offensive and defensive line.”

Also returning are underclassmen Maliki Fletcher and Cayden Lawler. “Maliki is a defensive back and wide receiver,” said Childers. “He will also have to run the ball a lot. Cayden plays on the line, and he hasn’t missed a workout – great leader.” While not easy, Vina’s schedule has eased up a bit from last year, with Class 1A semifinalist Mars Hill moving up to Class 2A. “We are glad to see Mars Hill go,” said Childers. “We have some teams on our schedule we think we can compete with, like Shoals Christian, Cherokee and Phillips. We also have some good games on our schedule with Marion County, Lynn and Tharptown.” Childers said he thinks the challenge, especially at the Class 1A level, is going to be making it through a full season. “I expect there will be some cancellations because of the virus,” he said. “It will be really hard for small schools to overcome virus exposure. If one or two of our guys gets it, then we have all been exposed, and we are shut down for two weeks.”
