FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR

W

ith the holidays behind us and the long, drab days of winter in view, you might be looking for a little something to brighten your days. We give you: the bridal edition of Franklin Living. To me, it’s so fitting that our special wedding-focused issue recurs in January/February each year. Though sometimes the world feels dark and gray this time of year – the “winter blues” are real, y’all – a focus on love can help make our hearts a little lighter. Starting on page 17, feast your eyes on the beautiful weddings of five Franklin couples. They share all the details of their beautiful wedding days, as well

as the love story that led up to the moment of the “I do.” We love having the opportunity to give you an inside look at different kinds of weddings, and it’s also a joy to get to highlight some of our local venues, photographers, florists and other vendors. If you or someone you know is in the midst of wedding planning, you might gain some inspiration from seeing how other Franklin County brides and grooms tied the knot. Of course, that’s not all we have to offer when it comes to love and romance. On page 11, you can read about a new local venue that opened in 2023, Scottarosa Farms. It might be the perfect

spot for your next soiree, whether that’s a wedding or some other occasion – a birthday, a shower, a reunion. On page 16, Lori Skinner shares some recommended titles if you’re in the mood for a good romantic read. On page 34, meeting wedding coordinator and stationer Elizabeth Joyner, and on page 37 you can get some flower tips from the Franklin County Extension. Of course, Emily Mays has your bi-monthly financial advice on tap, and Philip Goad has some encouragement for your faith. On top of that, Amy McCollum has some recipes to help you get the year started on the right foot. It’s all inside this edition. You’re going to love it.

MONEY MATTERS

Walking down the aisle with a financial plan

P

lanning a wedding is a joyous journey, but without proper financial planning, it can also become a stressful one. Let’s explore key aspects of budget friendly weddings, helping you create lasting memories without breaking the bank. Setting a Realistic Budget Begin by establishing a budget that aligns with your financial situation. Consider all expenses, including venue, catering, attire and unexpected costs. Having a clear budget will prevent overspending and financial stress down the road. Financial communication is crucial at this stage. Openly discuss finances with your partner and any contributing family members. Transparency is key to avoiding misunderstandings and ensuring everyone is on the same page. Prioritizing Expenses Identify your priorities and allocate a larger portion of your budget to these aspects of the big day. Whether it’s a dream venue or a top-tier photographer, understanding your must-haves will help you allocate funds wisely. Don’t forget, you can negotiate with vendors to secure the best deals. Don’t hesitate to compare quotes and explore different options, ensuring you get the most value for your money.

Saving Strategies Start saving early to ease the financial burden. Consider opening a dedicated wedding savings account and explore cost-cutting measures without sacrificing quality. One way you might be able to help the budget is by taking a critical look at your guest list. Trim your guest list to a manageable size. Remember, each additional guest means added expenses. Prioritize inviting those who truly matter to you and your partner. DIY vs. Professional Services Assess which elements of the wedding you can handle yourself and where professional services are crucial. DIY projects can add a personal touch, but be mindful of your time and expertise. Make smart decisions when it comes to choosing what you will do versus what you will hire out. Post-Wedding Financial Planning Plan for life beyond the wedding day. Discuss financial goals, merge accounts if necessary, and create a roadmap for your financial future together. Emily Mays is vice president/chief administrative officer at Community Spirit Bank in Red Bay, working in finance for 15 years. She is an enthusiastic social media marketer, financial literacy advocate and go-local supporter.

appy New Year! It’s hard to believe 2024 is here; it seems like 2023 flew by. The past year has been a busy one for me. I came out of retirement in the spring to teach at Phil Campbell High School, and this fall I took a temporary job at East Franklin Junior High School. On top of that, I have a teenager who is involved in everything from volleyball to cheerleading. With all of that going on, I found it hard to find time for healthy homecooked meals. The busy life led me to eating out and picking quick, unhealthy options. The hustle and bustle lifestyle, along with middle age and genetic issues such as diabetes and high cholesterol, led me to being overweight. This sent me on a search for quick, easy and healthy recipes. I had to get healthy! I know that my family counts on me! So, during 2023, I lost about 35 pounds. I cut most sugar and high-fat foods from my diet. I still treat myself with that Southern glass of tea, but now it is half sweet and half unsweet. The healthy lifestyle is not always easy, but it is best when trying to lose weight and get that dreaded blood work where it needs to be. I want to share some of my favorite healthier recipes with you. There is no time like the present to get healthy and make 2024 the best year ever!

BUILT to SERVE. HERE to STAY. Some local banks are closing offices, leaving town, or being acquired by big banks. It’s frustrating when the bank you trusted with your financial relationship no longer exists. That’s what happened in Leighton in 1947, and Bank Independent was born to fill the void.

dressing, as it will also be used as a chicken marinade as well. Combine all the dressing ingredients in a large canning jar, place the lid on and shake really well to emulsify. Alternatively, you can put dressing ingredients into a bowl and whisk really well. 2. Pour exactly half of this dressing over the chicken in a medium glass bowl, Tupperware or Ziploc, then rub it in to get it coated on all sides. 3. Allow to marinate for at least 30 minutes in the fridge. 4. Discard this used part of the marinade before cooking your chicken. 5. To cook the chicken, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Drizzle your pan with oil, then add in the chicken and cook for about four minutes per side, or until nicely browned and just cooked through. 6. Set cooked chicken aside on a plate to rest for 10 minutes, then chop.

A place to say I do Scottarosa Farms opens as new venue for weddings, other special occasions Recipes by ALISON JAMES Photos by MARÍA CAMP AND CONTRIBUTED BY FILM + FABLE COLLECTIVE

S

cottarosa Farms has been in business just over a year, providing Franklin Countians and those from the surrounding area another option when it comes to making the all-important choice of a wedding venue. Property owners Brian and Amy Scott had the vision in 2021 to upgrade their hunting preserve to also accommodate weddings and other private events.

Franklin Living

“They live on a really large, beautiful piece of property in Phil Campbell,” explained Scottarosa Farms manager Savannah Hamilton. “Wedding venues are popping up left and right, but there are so many people getting married that they are in such high demand.” Hamilton said that apparent need is what inspired the Scotts to open their own venue and share their beautiful space with brides-to-be. They particularly hoped to offer another option to couples in Franklin County, to keep them from being forced into the Shoals or elsewhere to find an available venue for their preferred date. “Building began in October 2021. It took about a year,” Hamilton said. “We started advertising and were officially open for business in January 2023.” The property boasts a pond with a pier – the spot where many brides choose to hold their ceremonies, since “that outside space is so breathtaking, it’s hard to

pass up,” – as well as an open barn, about 6,000 square feet, which is an ideal spot for receptions. “In my opinion, it’s the selling point,” Hamilton said. Brian Scott explained he built the barn himself, all from reclaimed wood – from the old Crandall House in Spruce Pine, which he had to tear down when the feed mill started construction, and from a couple old chicken houses at his father’s farm. His father has another connection to the property, as well – the «Scottarosa» name is a combination of the family surname plus «arosa» in homage to a favorite TV show – a nod to the Ponderosa Ranch on the television show Bonanza. Brian also crafted and installed the stonework on the barn, an outgrowth of another business he operates, B. Scott Stone. Of course, the barn is just part of what creates the overall aesthetic of the venue. “Right when people pull up, it’s

13

just open, peaceful,” Hamilton described. “When people come in, they say, ‘This is exactly what I was wanting.’” Another “selling point” is the property being an active deer hunting reserve – “for the guys, it’s the deer and the possibility that they are going to come out in the middle of the ceremony.” A bridal suite provides a place for the bride and her maids to dress and get ready, taking advantage of the long wall of mirrors with vanity lights – along with big windows letting in plenty of natural light – and a set of couches. The groomsman’s loft boasts a pool table and a flat screen, a place where the fellas can hang out. Hamilton said these two spots are separated in such a way that there is no chance of the groom and bride crossing paths before they’re ready. While suitable for weddings, Hamilton said they also market the venue for other special events, like graduation parties, reunions, showers, athletic banquets, retirement parties and more. Brian Scott also pastors Witness Outreach Ministries in Spruce Pine, and he said his work as a minister was a big part

of what opened his eyes to the idea of operating a wedding venue. “I’m a pastor, so I started doing weddings a lot at these wedding barns,” he said. “I knew it would be a good business plan – that’s the going thing now, these weddings in barns. He said his wife Amy, a teacher at Phil Campbell Elementary School, and Hamilton are the ones who do most of the work now the business is up and running. Hamilton, 27, came on board toward the end of 2022, as the Scotts were preparing to open. The Scotts are among Hamilton’s in-laws – she married their nephew Jacob Hamilton, who is head football coach at Phil Campbell High School, in June 2022. “I’ve always wanted to get into the event planning/wedding industry, but it was never really the right time,” explained Hamilton, an Atlanta native who graduated from the University of Alabama. She’s no newcomer to business management, having worked in communications for her family’s business, MS Industries, and owning her own online boutique, Smith and Mode. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity and happy to be where I’m at.” She added she

has been especially pleased with how different the local community is compared to Atlanta. She moved here a little over four years ago. “People are so much nicer. People are so kind, real and authentic,” she said. “I absolutely love living here.” After talking through the roles and responsibilities the Scotts wanted her to handle for Scottarosa Farms, Hamilton was ready to take the reins. “We have a good system going now. It’s been really great to work with family,” she said. The Scotts han-

dle property maintenance and upkeep, and Hamilton handles bookings, social media, contracts, scheduling, tours, payments and other details of coordinating with clients. Brian Scott said he would love to see his newest business venture host 30-50 weddings a year, noting there are already a couple of dozen booked for 2024. Scottarosa Farms is located at 2800 Highway 63, Phil Campbell. For information visit their website, www.scottarosafarms.com.

n the mood for a little romance? Northwest Shoals Community College library director Lori Skinner has these love-and-marriage-focused titles to recommend: “Eligible” By Curtis Sittenfeld This delightful modern retelling of “Pride and Prejudice” finds the oldest daughters of the family, Liz and Jane, living in New York. Upon returning home to Cincinnati because of a health scare, they discover their home has become ramshackle, and their family is in chaos. Their younger sisters are too busy – Kitty and Lydia with dieting and Mary with her third online master’s degree – to do anything to support the family, and their mother has become obsessed with marrying off her daughters before Jane’s quickly approaching 40th birthday. When Dr. Bingley, a doctor who recently appeared on a huge reality TV dating show, arrives in town, he brings along his best friend, Dr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. This best-selling novel is a hilarious send-up that will have you laughing out loud as you ponder courtship and family.

“Veil of Night” By Linda Howard Alabama native and New York Times best-selling author Linda Howard’s humorous romantic suspense novel features the death of a bridezilla of mythic nastiness. Jaclyn Wilde is a top wedding planner in Atlanta and loves everything wedding related – until taking on Carrie Edwards as a client. When Carrie is brutally murdered after a physical altercation with Jacklyn, Jacklyn becomes a prime suspect amongst many people who wanted Carrie dead. Things get more complicated when the lead detective just happens to be the one-night stand Jacklyn had right before Carrie’s death. When the murderer sets his sights on Jacklyn, things heat up with the investigation – and with her hunky detective.

“The Secret Bridesmaid” By Katy Birchall When professional bridesmaid Sophie Breeze is hired by Lady Victoria Swann to act as bridesmaid to her daughter in the society wedding of the year, it is a chance to prove exactly how talented she is. However, things get complicated when the bride is a diva, she has an inconvenient attraction to the bride’s older brother, and a rival society wedding is announced for the same day. Hijinks ensue as Sophie endeavors to keep her true identity a secret and catch the eye of Lord Swann while getting a reluctant bride to the wedding on time.

HOW THEY MET: Jake and Sophie met in the late summer of 2022 through mutual friends, who decided they should meet. When they first met on Jake’s land in East Franklin, it was love at first sight. From that day forward, they never left each other’s sides. FIRST DATE: Jake and Sophie’s first date was one they will never forget. Jake took Sophie to ride four-wheelers and to meet his horse, Bella, – who he said had the best judgment of character and would determine if she could hang around or not Turns out Bella loved Sophie. THE PROPOSAL: Feb. 10, 2023, Jake proposed to Sophie that evening at the same spot where he took her to kill her first deer. It was a complete surprise, as the were sup-

Jake got a call as they were on their way to “dinner” with the news that “some of their cows had gotten out,” so he went to go and look for the cows – and that’s when he brought Sophie to the proposal spot. It was absolutely perfect. Jake and Sophie’s families were waiting on them afterward to surprise them. The next week they were surprised with a beautiful engagement party to celebrate. THE WEDDING: Jake and Sophie got married Oct. 14, 2023, in Bon Secour at the historic, French-style Swift-Coles Historic Home, nestled away between Gulf Shores and Fairhope, located just off the bay. The property was covered with beautiful oak trees with Spanish moss. Sophie and Jake felt as if their wedding had an old Southern feel with the beautiful plantation-style home. The ceremony, cocktail hour and reception were all held outside, where the soiree was beautifully illuminated with lights draped from the live oaks and moss, along with chandeliers hung on the porches. FAVORITE MOMENT: Jake and Sophie’s favorite moment from the wedding was getting to celebrate and dance the night away with their guests. They truly felt all the guests at the wedding each other’s company, dancing together all night long. WHAT THEY LOVE: What Sophie loves most about Jake is his drive and determination to always provide for them and how hard he works to make sure she is always taken care of. What Jake loves most about Sophie is her spirit – how she is so determined and strong and loves her people deeply. FINAL THOUGHTS: Jake and Sophie thought their special day couldn’t have been more perfect. From the ceremony to the reception, the whole day was so much fun. They truly felt like it was a fairytale they didn’t want to end. They honeymooned in the Dominican Republic following the wedding, where they stayed at the beautiful Excellence Punta Cana Resort. They had a blast and are so excited for this new journey in their lives together.

HOW THEY MET: Frank and Layne first met on a dating app. After talking for a while, they decided to meet in person. Layne attended a Bible study hosted by Frank’s church, and after that, they were pretty much inseparable. It was definitely love at first sight. FIRST DATE: Layne and Frank’s first official date included the unusual activity of ax throwing, eating lunch at Bravo! Italian Kitchen at Bridge Street in Huntsville and consuming the best milkshakes at an ice cream shop called The Yard Milkshake Bar. THE PROPOSAL: Frank and Layne’s engagement took place Aug. 20, 2022, at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville. A framed copy of their first official couple photo, from Easter of that year, was placed beside a brick wall, with a scenic view in the background, accompanied by a single red rose. Frank presented a diamond ring with red roses. The moment was captured by Frank’s brother Lee Edwards. It was a

wonderful surprise for Layne, as she and Frank had conversed for some time about spending the rest of their lives with one another. THE WEDDING: Frank and Layne’s wedding took place May 13, 2023, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The elegant and rustic feel provided by The Givens House at Glenn Hill in Town Creek, along with cooperative weather, allowed for the wedding to take place outside. There were approximately 150 people in attendance. FAVORITE MOMENT: Layne’s favorite moment of the day was when she was escorted down the aisle by her father, Heath Boyd, who is always a daughter’s first love. The moment felt like a complete fairytale, marking a wonderful transition into a new journey with the partner God had given her. Frank’s favorite moment of the wedding was when he and Layne first walked down the aisle as a married couple to the song “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles.

Charity is from Russellville, and Lee is from Kinston. The happy couple married Sept. 30, 2023. Franklin Living

HOW THEY MET: Lee and Charity met Dec. 4, 2021, in Birmingham. Leading up to their first date, they talked on the phone every night for hours, so they felt like they already knew one another. On their second occasion ever spending time with each other, Lee told Charity he knew they were going to be together forever! She laughed and told him he didn’t know – but now she can say he was definitely right. FIRST DATE: Charity and Lee’s first date was so memorable. Lee and his friends had their medical school holiday party December 4, 2021, and he took a chance and asked Charity to be his date, having never met her in person. Not only did they meet each other for the first time, but Charity met all of his friends on the same night. Lee picked Charity up and they went to

dinner together before going to the event at Ghost Train Brewing. They spent the night dancing and laughing! Lee insisted they take pictures together – and they are so glad they did because now they have them to look back at and see each other together from the beginning. It was the best first date they could have ever asked for! THE PROPOSAL: This day was nothing short of a fairytale! Every detail was absolutely perfect. Lee started by planning a trip to Sanibel Island. He surprised Charity by having her family waiting at the airport when they landed. His parents also came down to be a part of their special day! The day Lee popped the question, they went on a dinner date at their favorite place to eat on the island. Lee gifted Charity a book of letters and photos he had secretly taken

since their first date, recording all of their memories together. After dinner they were going to watch the sunset. Once they walked down to the beach, the most beautiful proposal possible was waiting. Lee got down on one knee and asked Charity to spend forever with him, and it was the easiest “Yes” ever – truly the most romantic engagement anyone could ask for. THE WEDDING: Lee and Charity got married Sept. 30, 2023, at Willow Oak Lodge. It was a beautiful day full of love and happiness. They got married at sunset and had their reception under the stars and lights. Friends and family flew and drove from near and far to be a part of their big day. Their wedding was decorated with white florals, chinoiserie pottery and personalized details – from monogramed napkins with each guest’s name, to letters from their guests to read on their one-year anniversary. The reception turned into an amazing dance party with wigs, cowboy hats and glow sticks. The exit for the couple was extra sweet, as the guests threw rose petals Charity had saved from every flower Lee had given her since they started dating. FAVORITE MOMENT: Lee’s favorite moment of the wedding was getting to see Charity walk down the aisle. Charity’s favorite moment was their first dance. They choreographed the dance themselves, and having it come to life and sharing it with their friends and family was perfect.

WHAT THEY LOVE: Lee loves that Charity is beautiful inside and out – that she is sweet, kind, loving, caring and funny. He also loves that they both share the same values and beliefs and the way Charity makes him feel happy and supported. Charity loves how kind and caring Lee is, as well as how he’s a hard worker and strives to be the best at everything, including being the best husband and friend. She said she hopes they live a long loving life together and that at the end, when they only have their memories, they can look at each other and say how amazing it was. FINAL THOUGHTS: The couple would like to thank all of their family and friends who traveled from all over the country to be part of their special day. They will remember it as the best day of their lives. They would especially like to thank family and neighbors who worked so hard and spent months planning, decorating, building and setting up. Because of them, the couple’s fairytale wedding became a reality, and they cannot express how truly grateful they are.

They were surrounded by a host of family and friends. They chose an elegant color scheme of blush pink, black, white and gold. The invitations were created by Laura Oliver Agee, cousin of the bride and owner of Swag, based in Tuscaloosa. The invitations were adorned with the couple’s gold wedding crest on a blush pink paper tied with a silk ribbon. Guests were greeted with music provided by harpist, Victoria Anderson Greer from Huntsville. The

bride chose a full floral wedding arch created by Chase Sparks as the backdrop to her nuptials. The couple left the ceremony in a red Mustang borrowed from the late Stacy Cantrell. The wedding reception was held at George’s 217 in Sheffield. The bride and her brother Jake did a choreographed dance, and the brother of the groom, Jacob Wallace, serenaded the couple with a country melody. Following the ceremony, the couple spent their honeymoon at Sandals, Royal Barbados. FAVORITE MOMENT: One of Gabe and Lauren Mae’s favorite wedding moments was when they did their grand entrance at the reception. It was so fun and set the tone for the reception to come. WHAT THEY LOVE: Lauren Mae loves how caring Gabe is for everyone around him. Gabe inspires her every day to be a true servant and to love others. Gabe loves how thoughtful Lauren Mae is – how she always goes above and beyond for the people she loves and is constantly thinking of others. FINAL THOUGHTS: Gabe and Lauren Mae are so thankful for everyone who attended their dream wedding and made the night so special.

ter, best friends, but as they grew older, they experienced heartbreak, lived and learned, and they realized they needed one another forever. FIRST DATE: Addie and Kendric went on a trip during Thanksgiving break to Del Rio Texas, and that is where their feelings began to unfold. They began to see they wanted to be more than just friends. THE PROPOSAL: Feb. 12, 2023, Kendric and Addie were supposed to meet his parents to go eat after church. When they got in the car, Kendric’s brother made up a story about needing to visit his uncle’s cabin – which was not out of the ordinary, so Addie did not suspect a thing. When they arrived, Kendric asked Addie to get out of the car, and when she did, he gave her a book with pictures starting from their childhood and continuing throughout the years. After Addie finished paging through the book, she looked up, and Kendric got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Their immediate families were hiding and were able to see him pop the

question. Addie was totally surprised and answered with a resounding yes. THE WEDDING: The wedding was elegant. The color was black with floral accents. Addie and Kendric were outside in the woods, under a wooden arch draped in white and floral arrangements. There were string lights draped throughout the trees, and rose petals and candles lined the aisles. All the music was done by Addie and Kendric’s family, which made the occasion even more special and emotional. Addie and Kendric come from large families and had around 350 guests. FAVORITE MOMENT: Their favorite memory was their last dance. The DJ had all the guests exit the room and gave them one last dance to soak in the day, just the two of them. They felt so very blessed in that moment. WHAT THEY LOVE: Addie loves that Kendric never gave up on being more than friends. Kendric loves how close he and Addie have always been since their childhood.

lizabeth Joyner explained she has always loved wedding planning – something she has “always done for family and friends” – but it was after planning her own wedding, with help from a couple of like-minded friends, that she discovered just how much she loves figuring out the details and making sure everything goes according to plan.

34

“I realized how much I enjoyed that aspect,” said Joyner, of Russellville. “I fell in love with the details, the hands-on of actually planning and coordinating weddings.” That’s what led to her starting her business, Elizabeth Joyner Event Planning & Stationery, in August 2023. The 2016 Phil Campbell High School grad earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of North Alaba-

ma, majoring in marketing and professional sales. She explained she enjoys getting to be part of someone’s special day, finding it rewarding to help them realize their vision while getting to appreciate their unique imagination and goals in bringing it all to fruition. Her role is to simplify what’s required to make that happen and deal with the details so

brides don’t have to face those additional stresses. Another element in particular Joyner finds enjoyable is designing stationery, as it has plenty of details to research and plan to come up with the perfect designs and products. “I can also do the décor setup,” Joyner added. “Each venue is a blank canvas we can use to create whatever we want it to be, and that’s always an exciting prospect.” She said she enjoys the collaboration with the brides. One way she does that is through creating a vision board on Pinterest to coordinate the plans they are making together. “I like being able to hold their hand through the experience and let them focus more on the joy of the day instead of worrying about every little thing,” Joyner said. “Instead of communicating with all the individual vendors, all they have to do is communicate with me.” “Being able to help brides pull off their big day is especially rewarding,” she added. “To get to be part of their joy is very meaningful and incredibly rewarding. I offer services including simply

planning, all the way to full on wedding coordination, as well as on the day of the event. I love seeing the uniqueness of each bride and helping them realize their dreams for their big day.”

any individual elements come together to create a beautiful wedding, from the venue, to the dress, to the cake, to the music. One detail some brides agonize over is the flowers. Here are some things to keep in mind:

RESEARCH

You’ll need to see a florist to get started with choosing your wedding flowers – but before the meeting, you’ll need to do some research. Find out the names of the flowers you specifically want in your arrangements and bouquets. Find out what flowers symbolize: your choice of flower, the arrangement, colors and other details all carry special meanings and evoke certain styles.

MEETING WITH YOUR FLORIST

When meeting with your florist, bring along your inspiration photographs or Pinterest boards, a photograph of your wedding gown, your bridesmaid fabric swatch and anything else that will help your florist visualize your style and choice better. Your meetings with the florist should also include getting a cost estimate. Flowers and décor will take up about 10 percent of most wedding budgets. Have this at the back of

Franklin Living

your mind and let your florist know your budget right from the start of the discussion. Details like the exact list of your wedding flowers, the cost of materials as well as the general breakdown of total costs should be included. Get the highest best-case scenario as well as the lowest possible minimum. Be open about your budget and discuss with your florist how to make the most suitable decisions.

FACTORS TO KEEP IN MIND

VENUE: Your wedding venue, as well as your table configuration, can influence your choice of wedding flowers. Talk these through with your florist so you can have a design that blends well and won’t look out of place. GUESTS: Consider your guests while making your decisions with flowers. Your tablescape should not get in the way of a good time. Flower arrangements should not get in the way of conversations. Also, you might want to keep floral arrangements away from the buffet line; while some flowers are edible, nobody wants the taste of flowers with their meal. SEASON: Many flowers are seasonal and might be out of season during your wedding timeframe. Insisting on certain blooms could have major impact on the bottom line. Fortunately, some flowers have look-alikes that

will fit in as worthy replacements. Talk to your florist about what is available during the time of your wedding and be open to using a substitute flower. DAY-OF LOGISTICS: Be sure to work with your florist on the timing of the flower delivery. Remove damaged blooms and keep your flowers cool and away from sunlight so they don’t wilt too quickly.

FAITH FOCUS

U

Will your marriage be a submission competition?

ntold amounts of time, energy and money are often invested to ensure that a bride and groom experience the perfect wedding, an unforgettable day that is supposed to be the first day of happily ever after. Yet recent statistics tell a sobering story about our marriages here in the Unites States. Just under half will end in divorce, and on average, the typical U.S. marriage that ends in divorce lasts just eight years. However, based on what we find in Scripture, neither of these statistics reflect God’s vision for what he designed marriage to be: one man married to one

woman for as long as they both shall live. What is it that goes wrong in so many marriages? These unfortunate statistics exist because many people who get married either do not know or do not choose to follow God’s instructions related to marriage. Scripture reveals that Christ is the key to marriages that make it! In Paul’s inspired letter to the Christians at Ephesus he wrote, “And further, submit to one another out of reverence to Christ” (Eph. 5:21). While this command does apply to Christian relationships in general, Paul follows this statement by

explaining what this is supposed to look like in marriage. “For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord … For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church.” Consider two important takeaways from this passage. First, a successful marriage should include both a husband and wife who are fully committed to following Christ. Second, because these two Christians who are married to each other have reverence for Christ, they will create a marriage wherein they submit to each other. Sometimes marriages get off track when wives choose not to submit to their husbands; on the other hand, some marriages fail because of husbands who fail to understand how submission connects to being the God-appointed leader of the home. Think about it: A husband who loves his wife like Christ loved the church is going to understand that even though he is the leader of the home, he’s not to be domineering. He will care what his wife thinks and what she says. He’ll value her in making decisions. He will understand that submitting to her wants and needs is an aspect of successful leadership. The reason husbands and wives submit to each other is constant and unchanging. Husbands and wives are to submit to each other out of reverence for Christ, and Christ always deserves reverence. Consequently, husbands and wives who want a marriage that makes it should be engaged in what has been referred to as an ongoing “submission competition.” No other relationship will have more impact on your spiritual health than the person you choose to marry. Marry someone who will follow Christ with you so that the two of you can help each other go to heaven.
