Golden Tigers
After spring training, summer workouts and the first week of fall practice, your team has probably developed an identity. How would you sum up that team identity and their progress to this point? I think our senior leadership is kind of our identity right now. I think those guys have really decided to come on and lead this football team – and more so in the last week or two, it’s really started to surface, which is good. What are your team’s strengths offensively? Offensively, right now, offensive line we’re so much better, so further along that that’s one of our strengths. Then, of course, the passing game – our passing game is a lot sharper. Peyton Nichols has had a great summer, great fall camp thus far. Our receiver corps has built some depth, and we’ve found some guys that we think will be explosive in the spots that we have them. What are your team’s strengths defensively? Defensively our strength is definitely our defensive line and probably our safety positions. I think we’ve got a lot of experience there – one of the best safeties we’ve ever coached. Who are some of your veteran players that you expect to take on leadership roles on the team? Our defensive line, those senior guys up front, with Austin Bohannon, Jared Thornton, and
Tyron Wilson. Then Cam DeArman being a senior linebacker, J.J. Johnson, and even Colin Garrison, who’s going to be a junior defensive back, is really taking on a leadership role. Then offensively I think that offensive line – Austin Stidham, Hunter James, Gabby-Pedro Juan, then Slate Wallace. You know there are a lot of guys that I think that are right there and are starting to come on that we really need. What are some of the intangibles you can see developing in your team? Just an excitement level and a competitive attitude. Aug. 12 we had a great scrimmage at the end of practice, and I think just the intensity and the competitiveness in our kids is just something that we haven’t seen since we’ve been here, When you get to where you’re competing, and emotions are running high, and kids are getting after it and it means something to them when they succeed or when they fail, then I think you’re getting the right mindset. What is your coaching philosophy? Is that philosophy steady or does it change from year to year? My philosophy is always the same. We’re going to take care of the little things and try and be really good at the details of what we do – not just in football but in the weight room and in the way that we act. I believe that we’re here to build men. That’s what we’re in this position to do.

How would you sum up that team identity and their progress to this point? This team has a great attitude and work ethic. They came to summer workouts ready to get to work and pushed each other to improve every day. That has carried over into fall practice. I’m very excited to see the results on the field. What are your team’s strengths offensively? We have a lot of very good skill guys. I think with guys that can catch, run and throw, we will be able to be a very balanced offense. What are your team’s strengths defensively? All of our secondary returns from last year and really play well together. They communicate well with each other, and because of this we are able to mix our coverages up. Who are some of your veteran players that you expect to take on leadership roles on the teams? Tristan Godsey is definitely our leader. He works really hard every day, and the team responds well to him. Who are some newcomers fans need to keep an eye on? Trey Nalls, Malique Nalls, Grant

Masterson and Seth Brindley What are some of the intangibles you can see developing in your team? Confidence. They believe they can win, and that shows in how they approach each day. I know coaches want to take things game-by-game, but you have to have a game or set of games that will key for your team to be successful. What are would those be? I think the first game is very important in setting the tone for the year. Weeks three, four and five begin region play, and we will play probably two of the favorites to win the region – Hatton and Red Bay – in weeks four and five. What is your coaching philosophy? Is that philosophy steady, or does it change from year to year? Do the work. If its worth doing, it’s worth doing right. I don’t think that can ever change; to be successful at anything, you have to be willing to put the work in. Other than convenience, what makes your stadium a special place to play in? The support from the student body and the community. We always have good crowds that really get behind the team, and that helps to motivate the players to represent the school and community the best they can.

How would you sum up that team identity and their progress to this point? Chemistry and the work ethic to become a better player is a positive with this year’s team. Team strength is the identity of this year’s team. What are your team’s strengths offensively? Experience with the offensive line and quickness with the skill players. What are your team’s strengths defensively? Playing as a unit and speed to the ball. Who are some of your veteran players that you expect to take on leadership roles on the teams? I think the senior class as a whole has taken steps to be the leaders on the team. Who are some newcomers fans need to keep an eye on? Players that have changed positions to watch, Tate Ozbirn at RB and the addition of Bailey Turbyfill back from injuries the past two seasons. What are some of the intan-
gibles you can see developing in your team? The understanding that this a sport where practice and the effort in the process of getting better will lead to success during games. I know coaches want to take things game-by-game, but you have to have a game or set of games that will key for your team to be successful. What are would those be? Playing the bigger schools early to be better prepared for our region games. What is your coaching philosophy? Is that philosophy steady, or does it change from year to year? We want to be physical and win that battle every week. This does not change. Other than convenience, what makes your stadium a special place to play in? Support from the community and the active role our city plays in the development of our students. What stadium/school/team do like to play at and why? We are given 10 nights a year to show what we work every day. Every game night is special.

How would you sum up that team identity and their progress to this point? Our team has steadily progressed. However, we are still very young in some spots. With the amount of youth and inexperience we have, only time will tell what our “identity” may be. What are your team’s strengths offensively? Offensively we will be a run/ play action team. Our quarterback, Heath Hatton, is definitely the strength of our offense. For us to succeed, we have to have good, solid play at the quarterback position. What are your team’s strengths defensively? Defensively we will try to stop the run as best we can and try to limit explosive plays. Who are some of your veteran players that you expect to take on leadership roles on the teams? Heath Hatton, Carlos Perez, Mikey Rosson, Matthew Brasuell, Eduardo Lopez, Jacob Risley and Gant Dill. We have a lot of game experience with

these guys and expect them to shoulder the load for us and help bring some of these younger guys along. Who are some newcomers fans need to keep an eye on? Chris Amos, Triston Hampton, Luis Macias and Dashawn Figueroa. We have a lot size and potential with these players. It may take them some time to develop, but it will be fun watching them progress. What are some of the intangibles you can see developing in your team? I think as far as intangibles go, we have a bunch of guys who are not afraid to work hard and are trying their best to be coachable. They want to win. They want to get over that hump to make this program successful. We need for them to have some success to see that the hard work pays off. I know coaches want to take things game-by-game, but you have to have a game or set of games that will be key for your team to be successful. What are those? Of course all of our games are important, but it will be critical for us to play well against Phillips, Cherokee, Mars Hill and Phil Campbell.

Vina After spring training, summer workouts and the first week of fall practice, your team has probably developed an identity. How would you sum up that team identity and their progress to this point? I think we are still developing our identity as a team. You hope the boys make progress starting in the spring and continuing all throughout the season. What are your team’s strengths offensively? I hope our ability to run and mix in the pass as well. I believe we have more skill than we’ve had in the past, and as long as our lineman can hold their blocks, we will move the ball. What are your team’s strengths defensively? Our front four will be our strength defensively. If they can dictate the game and cause some disruption in the back field, we will be fine. What are some of the intan-

I know coaches want to take things game-by-game, but you have to have a game or set of games that will be key for your team to be successful. What are those? We just need to get off to a good start in our first game of the season. Then we can gain some momentum and some confidence leading into the next week and into region play. What is your coaching philosophy? Is that philosophy steady or does it change from year to year? It changes in the fact that we will adjust our system based on the type of players we have on the team. You still want your boys to execute and play 100 percent, regardless of what type of game plan you have drawn up.

Bobby Wallace LIONS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN 2015 GSC RACE Despite having a record 56 returning lettermen and 15 returning starters from a team that finished 9-2 last season and earned a share of a second straight Gulf South Conference Championship, the University of North Alabama has been picked to finish third in the 2015 GSC race in a pre-season poll of the league’s head football coaches. UNA, trying to become just the third squad to win three straight GSC football crowns, is a pre-season Top 25 pick nationally by Lindy’s Sports (fifth) and the Sporting News (16th). “I think numerous teams could have been picked anywhere from one to six,” said UNA head coach Bobby Wallace. “To be honest, I’m just as worried about playing every single team in this league as any other. There isn’t one team that you won’t have to be ready to play against.” UNA had seven Lions named to the pre-season All-GSC squad, led by three-time All-GSC running back Lamonte Thompson of Florence. Joining Thompson on the pre-season All-GSC squad are senior receiver Lee Mayhall of Jackson, Tenn., junior offensive guard Stephen Evans of Boston, Mass., senior offensive tackle Jalen Beavers of Stringer, Miss., junior defensive lineman Tyler Smith of Rogersville, Ala., junior defensive back Phiilbert Martial of Mobile and sophomore long snap-

per Wil Lovelace of Florence. Martial was also selected pre-season return specialist. UNA has advanced to the playoffs in 10 of the last 12 seasons and has won more GSC football titles (11) than any other league school. Wallace, who already ranks as the winningest coach in GSC football history, has a chance to make some history of his own in 2015. He enters the season just three wins behind Hal Self as the winningest coach in UNA’s storied football history. Self compiled a 10981-8 record over his 21 seasons at UNA after re-starting the program in 1949. Wallace is 106-46-1 in his 13 seasons with the Lions. UNA averaged 35.9 points and 440 yards per game last season offensively, and the majority of the players generating those numbers are returning. Not only do the Lions return three-year starting quarterback Luke Wingo but also have experienced back-ups returning in Jacob Tucker and Jacob Thomas. Wingo, a senior from Tuscaloosa, threw for 2,291 yards and 14 touchdowns last season and rushed for another six TDs. He ranks among UNA’s career leaders with 5,171 passing yards and 35 TD passes to go with 6,143 yards of total offense and 26 rushing touchdowns. Tucker, a junior from Linden, Tenn., has rushed for 676 yards and 12 TDs over the last two seasons and has thrown for another 653 yards and five scores. Thomas, a sophomore from Clay, rushed for 82 yards and one touchdown last season and threw for 249 yards and two TDs. The backfield returns Thompson, who has 2,312 career rushing yards and 23 TDs, as well as senior Diamond Simmons of Hanceville, who has 878 career yards and 10 touchdowns. The receiving corp is led by Mayhall and includes veterans Dre Hall and Eric Belew of Columbia, Tenn., Tevin Cook of Roanoke, Dajzon Dukes of Louisville, Ky., Hagan Scott of Birmingham, Jarret Smith of New Orleans, La., and Markeldon
Washington of Tuscaloosa. At tight end the Lions return starter Grant Lake of Arab, as well as back-ups Willie Bland of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Nolan Coffey of Moulton. In all, UNA returns 13 players who caught at least one pass last season. Evans and Beavers, along with returning starter Rod Winston of Tuscumbia, lead the way for an offensive line that returns 11 lettermen, including six with starting experience. Defensively, UNA was among the GSC’s best last season, allowing just 18.2 points per game. The Lions have six defensive starters back, including the entire starting secondary of Martial, Levi Fell of Muscle Shoals, Floyd Jones of Town Creek and Jalen Reedus of Birmingham. Smith leads the way on the defensive front, and Nick Johnson of Olive Branch, Miss., is the lone returning starter at linebacker. Junior Kevin Henke of St. Charles, Mo., is expected to handle the placekicking duties, while transfer Jeb Millender of Ponotooc, Miss., a junior college All-American last season, is expected to be the starting punter. UNA opens its 2015 season on the road at Birmingham’s Legion Field against Miles College Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. The Lions then open their home season on Sept. 12 at Braly Stadium against Mississippi College at 6 p.m. After a week off the Lions will host Florida Tech at Braly Stadium for the first time on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. That will also be a GSC-TV Live broadcast. Back-to-back road trips follow as UNA travels to Valdosta State Oct. 3 and Western Oregon Oct. 10. The Lions then return to Braly Stadium for a true Homecoming Oct. 17 in a non-conference game against North Carolina-Pembroke at 6 p.m. On Oct. 24 the Lions return to conference play at pre-season favorite West Georgia. UNA defeated the Wolves 31-28 last season on a dramatic game-winning touchdown drive in the final minute. Nick Saban The Alabama Crimson Tide comes into the season returning 12 starters and 54 lettermen – with 23 lettermen and two starters on offense and 27 letterman and seven starters on defense. Four lettermen and three starters – including Ray Guy Award finalist J.K. Scott – return on special teams. On offense Alabama will have to replace Blake Sims, one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country last season, as well as running back T.J. Yeldon and two big boys up front, Austin Shepherd and Arie Kouandjio. The most important losses come at the wide receiver position, where the Tide has lost all three starting receivers from last season: Christian Jones, DeAndrew White and first round draft pick Amari Cooper. Despite losing Shepherd, Kouandjio, and Yeldon, the ground game should be fine in the hands of the two returning starting offensive linemen Ryan Kelly and Cam Robinson and bruising running

back Derrick Henry and speedster Kenyan Drake. Whoever takes the helm at quarterback – a battle that could include up to five players – will sorely miss the reliable hands and veteran experience of Jones, White and especially Cooper. Chris Black, Robert Foster, ArDarius Stewart and Calvin Ridley look to be battling for those jobs, but offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and his starting play caller will seemingly have no “go-to” guy in the passing game. Tight end O.J. Howard may assume that role assuming he sees more passes this season now that Brian Vogler is gone. On defense the Crimson Tide’s biggest losses include AllAmerican safety and first round draft pick Landon Collins, defensive back Nick Perry, linebacker Trey DePriest and defensive lineman Brandon Ivory. Losing Collins probably hurts the Crimson Tide the most. Last season the play of defensive backs Bradley Sylve, Eddie Jackson, and Cyrus Jones was suspect, inconsistent, and extremely frustrating to head coach Nick Saban. Collins
was the only true constant in that secondary. The lessons and experience gained last season should lead to improvement in the secondary in 2015 but look for sophomore Tony Brown and redshirt freshman Marlon Humphrey to enter the fold at defensive back as well. Alabama’s defensive front seven is one of the best, most talented, and most experienced group that Saban and defensive coordinator Kirby Smart have had over the past eight years. This front seven could be the best in conference if not the best in the country. The Tide lost leader DePriest but are returning arguably the best linebacker in the conference in Reggie Ragland – also a preseason front runner for the Butkus Award – as well as senior linebacker Denzel Duvall and defensive linemen A’Shawn Robinson, Jonathan Allen, and Jarran Reed. Together, Ragland, Reed, and Robinson combined for 199 tackles last season. Alabama, who was No. 4 in rushing defense last season, should produce even better defensively this season. With so many questions remaining on offense, the Tide’s hopes of returning to the College Football Playoff will fall heavily on the shoulders of the defense. Story by KADIN POUNDERS

Gus Malzahn This season the Auburn Tigers are returning 43 lettermen and 15 starters. Out of the 43 returning lettermen 20 are on offense, 21 are on defense, and two are on special teams. Both the offense and defense have seven starters returning and one starter on special teams. Already successful in his first two seasons as Tigers head coach, Gus Malzahn’s team is expected to live up to the high expectations this season, especially with so many starters returning on each side of the football. The SEC Media Day reporters picked Auburn to win the SEC and many have the Tigers in their preseason College Football Playoff top four. The Tigers are returning seven starters on offense but lost some very important players and senior leadership. Quarterback Nick Marshall, center Reese Dismukes, guard Chad Slade, and running back Cameron Artis-Payne – all

seniors last season – are tough to replace. Nick Marshall’s heir at quarterback was always going to be Jeremy Johnson, but what Johnson makes up for in ability he lacks in big game experience. In the SEC, poise under pressure is just as important as playmaking ability. Another big loss was receiver Sammie Coates who decided to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Coates was Marshall’s go-to guy last season, but now those responsibilities will pass on to D’haquille “Duke” Williams. Williams’ health and off-the-field issues are a concern, but if he avoids problems he could easily find himself as a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award. Receivers Ricardo Lewis and Marcus Davis will also be veteran targets for Johnson. Look for running backs Javon Robinson and Roc Thomas to take over for Artis-Payne and Corey Grant in the backfield. The biggest positive for Auburn this offseason came with the hiring of former Florida head coach
Will Muschamp. Muschamp, although he did not live up to the hype at Florida, still produced top ten defenses each season with the Gators. Muschamp is regarded as one of the few coaches in college football capable of turning around a defense that was dysfunction especially by SEC standards. The losses of Robenson Therezie and Jonathan Mincy hurt the secondary, but Jonathan Ford, who had over 90 tackles last season, will be back. Muschamp should be salivating at the sight of Auburn’s front seven. The Tigers are bringing back defensive linemen Montravius Adams and DaVonte Lambert, linebackers Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy and defensive end Carl Lawson. Lawson was hurt all of last season but is considered to be one of the elite at his position. With a little bit of Muschamp magic, Auburn could have a front seven to rival Alabama and one of the best defenses in the land. Story by KADIN POUNDERS

The Razorbacks finished off 2014 on a high note by dismantling tradition powerhouse Texas in the Texas Bowl, a win head coach Bret Bielema called “erotic.” The Razorbacks are not quite ready to topple the kings of the SEC West and reign themselves, but this team definitely has the talent and the potential to knock one or two out of playoff contention.
