‫קהל יקר מירושלים ומעבר לה‪,‬‬ ‫העונה אנו חוגגים ‪ 80‬שנה לתזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות השידור‪ ,‬וגם ‪ 100‬שנים להולדתו‬ ‫של המלחין הגאון‪ ,‬שהיה אולי המוזיקאי הרבגוני ביותר בתולדות המוזיקה האמריקנית – ליאונרד‬ ‫ברנשטיין‪.‬‬ ‫התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות השידור‪ ,‬נוסדה לפני קום המדינה‪ ,‬בעיר שתהפוך בסופו של‬ ‫דבר לבירת האומה‪ .‬לפיכך החלטתי להכין תכנית שחובקת את המקומות שאליהם שולחת ירושלים‬ ‫את קרני האור שלה‪ ,‬כמגדלור לכל האניות הרוצות למצוא בית ונחמה‪ .‬אלו ערים בכל רחבי תבל‬ ‫המהדהדות עם ירושלים‪ ,‬וארצות שהזינו את הרפרטואר המוזיקלי שלה‪ ,‬אבל גם ערים שבהן מוזיקה‬ ‫ישראלית חדשה מושמעת כיום ברדיו או בהופעות חיות‪.‬‬ ‫הקהל הירושלמי‪ ,‬שאני מכיר כבר כמעט ‪ 20‬שנה‪ ,‬נוטה להעדיף מלחינים ומלחינות שאינם בני הארץ‪,‬‬ ‫אך אבקש להזכיר כי מלחינים ומלחינות אלה‪ ,‬יבולה של ארצנו‪ ,‬הם אוצרם של עירנו ושל התזמורת‪,‬‬ ‫והם זוכים להכרה ולהערכה מחוץ לישראל‪ .‬אני גאה ושמח לשלב יצירות חדשות מאת מלחינים‬ ‫ישראלים כמעט בכל התכניות‪ .‬מניסיוני‪ ,‬כמה מכם אולי לא מרגישים ׳בבית׳ עם יצירה זו או אחרת‪,‬‬ ‫אך בסופו של דבר‪ ,‬כולנו יודעים שהרגע שאנו מבלים עם יצירה חדשה‪ ,‬אפילו אם הוא מרגיש מוזר‬ ‫או מביך‪ ,‬הוא רגע המעשיר את נפשנו‪ ,‬משום שהוא מגרה את החוש הביקורתי שלנו‪ ,‬את דמיוננו‪,‬‬ ‫ומוציא אותנו מן הנתיב המוכר‪.‬‬ ‫עונה אחר עונה אני מביא מנצחים וסולנים מצוינים לעירנו‪ ,‬ועונה זו לא יוצאת דופן בכך‪ .‬התזמורת‬ ‫הסימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות השידור‪ ,‬קונה לה מוניטין של מצוינות ועוד ועוד אמנים יוצאים מן הכלל‬ ‫שמחים לבוא ולהופיע עמנו‪.‬‬ ‫אני מאחל לכם עונת ‪ 80‬נפלאה של תענוגות מוזיקליים‪ .‬אני מודה מקרב לב לחברי גדעון פז על‬ ‫עזרתו שלא תסולא בפז בהבאת אמנים חשובים ועל תרומתו לסיעור‪-‬המוחות שדורש פיתוחה של‬ ‫עונה חדשה‪.‬‬ ‫פרדריק שאזלן‬ ‫מנהל מוזיקלי‬

‫קהל יקר‪,‬‬ ‫אנו מתכבדים לפתוח את חגיגות שנת ה‪ 80-‬להקמתה של התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות‬ ‫השידור‪ ,‬תחת שרביטו של המנהל המוזיקלי הנודע פרדריק שאזלן‪.‬‬ ‫התזמורת היא אבן יסוד יציבה ואיתנה בחיי התרבות של ירושלים וישראל כולה‪ ,‬והיתה כזו למן ראשית‬ ‫ימיה כאנסמבל של שירות השידור המנדטורי בשנת ‪.1938‬‬ ‫ב‪ 80-‬שנותיה הופיעו עם התזמורת כמה מגדולי המוזיקאים בעולם‪ ,‬ביניהם פבלו קזאלס‪ ,‬אייזיק‬ ‫שטרן‪ ,‬ארתור רובינשטיין‪ ,‬אוטו קלמפרר‪ ,‬יו‪-‬יו מה ורבים אחרים‪ .‬בחוברת שלפניכם תוכלו למצוא‬ ‫זכרונות מכמה מהביקורים ההיסטוריים שחרוטים בדברי הימים של התזמורת‪.‬‬ ‫התזמורת מונה כ‪ 75-‬נגנים מובחרים‪ .‬כמחציתם גדלו‪ ,‬חונכו והוכשרו בישראל‪ ,‬וכמחציתם עולים‬ ‫מרחבי העולם‪.‬‬ ‫עונת ה‪ 80-‬של התזמורת תיפתח בקונצרט חגיגי‪ ,‬שבו תבוצע בין השאר הסימפוניה התשיעית של‬ ‫בטהובן‪ .‬בהמשך העונה יופיעו עם התזמורת מוזיקאים שהתחבבו במיוחד על הקהל בעונות קודמות‪,‬‬ ‫כגון טביאה צימרמן‪ ,‬אולי מוסטונן וקוליה בלאכר‪ .‬נארח גם את הפסנתרן הדגול מנחם פרסלר בן‬ ‫ה‪ ,93-‬ואת גיא בראונשטיין ואלכסנדר קורסנטיה‪ ,‬לצד אורחים רבים נוספים‪.‬‬ ‫האולם הסימפוני ע״ש הנרי קראון‪ ,‬ביתה של התזמורת‪ ,‬מתמלא עד אפס מקום בסדרת הקונצרטים‬ ‫לכל המשפחה‪ ,‬בניצוחו של חן צימבליסטה האהוב‪ .‬בקונצרטים אלו רואה התזמורת אתגר מיוחד –‬ ‫הנחלת אהבת המוזיקה בקרב הדור הבא‪.‬‬ ‫למרות השינויים שחלו בשידור הציבורי תמשיך התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים להנעים את זמנם של‬ ‫מאזיניה בכל רחבי הארץ והעולם‪ ,‬בקונצרטים המשודרים בקול המוזיקה‪.‬‬ ‫אתם מוזמנים להצטרף אלינו לחגיגות העונה ה‪ 80-‬של התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪.‬‬ ‫בברכת האזנה ערבה ובציפייה לראותכם באולם הקונצרטים‪,‬‬

‫הסימפונית והענקים‪ :‬אוטו קלמפרר‬ ‫במהלך שנות קיומה עבדו עם התזמורת שורה של מוסיקאים ענקים‪ ,‬שעיצבו את רוחה ומורשתה ב‪ 80-‬עונותיה‪ .‬ראש וראשון לאורחים היה המנצח האגדי אוטו‬ ‫קלמפרר‪ .‬קלמפרר הגיע לארץ פעמים אחדות‪ ,‬ובארבע מהן ניצח על התזמורת‪ .‬ביקורו הראשון הרים לא מעט גבות‪ .‬קלמפרר שהה בירושלים ב‪ 1951-‬בביקור‬ ‫משפחתי‪ .‬לאחר שנבצר ממנו לנצח על התזמורת הפילהרמונית הארץ‪-‬ישראלית‪ ,‬הגיע בהזמנתו של שבתי פטרושקה לנצח על תזמורת קול ישראל‪ .‬באותם ימים‬ ‫נחשבה התזמורת לחובבנית משהו‪ ,‬בוודאי בהשוואה לתזמורת הפילהרמונית‪ ,‬ופטרושקה הקדים דברי אזהרה והתנצלות‪ .‬קלמפרר ישב בחזרה של התזמורת‬ ‫ואז פנה אל המנצח חנן שלזינגר וביקש‪ ,‬בנימוס ובגרמנית‪ ,‬את הרשות לאחוז בשרביט‪ .‬עוד לפני תום חמש הדקות הפסיק קלמפרר לרגע את הניצוח ופנה אל‬ ‫פטרושקה‪" :‬אתה איום בעצמך! זו תזמורת ‪ -‬מצוינת!" בקונצרט‪ ,‬שנערך בקולנוע אדיסון‪ ,‬הוביל קלמפרר את התזמורת בתכנית על טהרת יצירותיו של מוצרט‪.‬‬ ‫תחת שרביטו של קלמפרר ניטע בתזמורת זרע של מצוינות ושל גאווה‪.‬‬ ‫שלושת ביקוריו הנוספים היו מרגשים ומיוחדים אף הם‪ :‬הביקור השני נערך בסוף חודש מאי ‪ ,1967‬ממש בערב מלחמת ששת הימים‪ ,‬והוקדש לאוניברסיטה‬ ‫העברית בירושלים; הביקור השלישי נערך ב‪ ,1970-‬ובמהלכו הוענק לקלמפרר בן ה‪ 85-‬דרכון ישראלי מיוחד שארגנה התזמורת לבקשת המנצח‪ .‬במעמד‪ ,‬שהיה‬ ‫מרגש עד מאוד‪ ,‬אמר קלמפרר בקול חלוש‪" :‬בחיי הארוכים ראיתי את מרבית הערים והמדינות בעולם‪ ,‬אך תמיד רציתי למצוא לעצמי מטרה‪ .‬עתה מצאתיה‪.‬‬ ‫ואני שמח להגיע הביתה"‪.‬‬ ‫לבקשתו‪ ,‬חזר קלמפרר לביקור אחד אחרון בתזמורת‪ .‬ב‪ ,1971-‬בגיל ‪ ,86‬הייתה לו בקשה אחת – לחזור ולנצח על התזמורת שהיתה יקרה ללבו‪ ,‬באולם שבו‬ ‫ניצח עליה לראשונה‪ .‬וכך‪ ,‬בערוב ימיו‪ ,‬הוביל קלמפרר את התזמורת של רשות השידור במסגרת פסטיבל ישראל של ‪ 1971‬בקונצרט אחד אחרון‪ ,‬שנערך באולם‬ ‫קולנוע אדיסון‪ ,‬שבו הופיע לראשונה עם התזמורת ב‪.1951-‬‬

‫הסימפונית והענקים‪ :‬איגור סטרווינסקי‬ ‫ב‪ 1964-‬הייתה התזמורת חלק מאירוע מוסיקלי היסטורי של ממש‪ :‬ביצוע‬ ‫בכורה עולמי לקנטטה אברהם ויצחק מאת סטרווינסקי‪ ,‬שנערך בבנייני האומה‬ ‫בירושלים ב‪ 23-‬באוגוסט‪ ,‬במסגרת ״הפסטיבל הישראלי״‪ ,‬ושנית למחרת היום‪,‬‬ ‫באמפיתאטרון בקיסריה‪ .‬על הביצוע ניצח המנצח האגדי רוברט קראפט‪.‬‬ ‫בקונצרט בוצעה גם יצירתו של סטרווינסקי סימפוניית תהילים‪ ,‬ועליה ניצח‬ ‫סטרווינסקי בעצמו‪.‬‬ ‫למעשה‪ ,‬הייתה תכנית הקונצרט מורכבת מיצירותיו של סטרווינסקי בלבד‪,‬‬ ‫וכללה גם את הקפריצ'יו לפסנתר ולתזמורת ווריאציות על הכוראל משמי‬ ‫מרום מאת באך‪.‬‬ ‫יהודה פיקלר‪ ,‬מנהלה המיתולוגי של התזמורת בשנות ה‪ ,70-‬מספר‪:‬‬

‫"סטרווינסקי הגיע עם רוברט קראפט‪ ,‬שניהל את החזרות‪ .‬סטרווינסקי‬ ‫עצמו ישב באולם בימק"א עם הפרטיטורה‪ .‬התכנית כללה את הכוראל של‬ ‫באך‪ ,‬בעיבוד סטרווינסקי‪ ,‬אחר כך הייתה סימפוניית תהילים‪ ,‬ובחלק השני –‬ ‫ביצוע הבכורה של אברהם ויצחק‪ .‬סטרווינסקי כתב את הקנטטה בהזמנת‬ ‫פסטיבל ישראל בניהולו של אהרון צבי פרופס‪ .‬השתתפו התזמורת שלנו‬ ‫והמקהלה הפילהרמונית‪ .‬עשינו שבוע של חזרות עם רוברט קראפט‪ .‬אבל‪,‬‬ ‫בתזמור של הכוראל מאת באך אין כינורות‪ .‬יש מצד שמאל כלי נשיפה ממתכת‪,‬‬ ‫קרנות‪ ,‬חצוצרות‪ ,‬טובה‪ ,‬ומצד ימין צ'לו‪ ,‬קונטרבס ומקהלה‪ .‬היות ולנו לא היו‬ ‫יותר משתי חצוצרות‪ ,‬נקראתי אני וישבתי בשורה השנייה‪ .‬במשך השבוע‬ ‫סטרווינסקי ראה אותי מתרוצץ‪ ,‬והבחין בי‪ .‬בתכנית המקורית היה אמור‬ ‫סטרווינסקי לנצח רק על הכוראל‪ ,‬וקראפט הופקד על שאר היצירות‪.‬‬

‫נסענו לקיסריה‪ ,‬לעשות חזרה‪ ,‬ורק שם‪ ,‬לקראת הביצוע‪ ,‬ביקש סטרווינסקי‬ ‫לעבור על הסימפוניה‪ .‬אנחנו מגיעים‪ ,‬עושים חזרה לפני הקונצרט‪ ,‬עוברים‬ ‫על הכל פעם אחת‪ ,‬ובתום החזרה מגיע פרופס עם הלימוזינה לקחת את‬ ‫סטרווינסקי למלון בקיסריה‪ ,‬ככה בין החזרה לקונצרט‪ ,‬הרי לא תחזיק את‬ ‫סטרווינסקי בחוץ‪.‬‬ ‫הם נוסעים ופתאום נעצרים למעלה‪' .‬פיייקלר! פיייקלר בוא!' צועק פרופס‪.‬‬ ‫אני רץ לשם‪ ,‬והוא אומר‪ :‬המאסטרו רוצה לדבר אתך‪ .‬סטרווינסקי‪ ,‬שישב‬ ‫בפנים‪ ,‬אמר לי‪' :‬שכחתי את הפרטיטורה שלי; אני רוצה את הפרטיטורה שלי'‪.‬‬ ‫'מאסטרו'‪ ,‬אמרתי לו‪' ,‬אני אהיה אחראי שהפרטיטורה תחכה לך כאן‪ ,‬אל תדאג'‪.‬‬ ‫אך הוא בשלו‪ ,‬מתעקש‪ .‬עכשיו‪ ,‬מה‪ ,‬שאני אתווכח עם סטרווינסקי? ירדתי‬ ‫למטה‪ ,‬נתתי לו‪ ,‬נסע‪.‬‬ ‫לקראת הקונצרט‪ ,‬הכל מתמלא‪ ,‬זלמן שזר‪ ,‬הנשיא שלנו‪ ,‬כבר שם‪ ,‬ואז מביאים‬ ‫את סטרווינסקי עם הלימוזינה השחורה‪ ,‬לאט לאט‪ ,‬רוברט קראפט עוזר לו‪,‬‬ ‫ואנחנו מחכים‪ ,‬והוא עולה על הבמה‪...‬‬

‫׳שכחתי את הפרטיטורה‪ .'...‬השניות הללו – הוא לא רוצה להתחיל‪ ,‬כולם‬ ‫כבר שם‪ ,‬שידור חי‪ ...‬מה עושים? לא יודע מאיפה הייתה לי התושייה‪ ,‬באותו‬ ‫ערב אלוהים היה אתי‪ .‬עם המקהלה עמד המנצח הדרום אפריקאי ג'ואל‬ ‫פרידלנדר‪ ,‬והיה לו עותק של הפרטיטורה כדי לתת למקהלה סימנים (קיואים)‪.‬‬ ‫קמתי מהחצוצרה‪ ,‬רצתי מסביב‪' ,‬ג'ואל‪ ,‬תן לי את הפרטיטורה'‪ ,‬לקחתי את‬ ‫הפרטיטורה והנחתי על הכן של סטרווינסקי‪ .‬ואז הוא התחיל‪ ,‬וזה עבר בשלום‪.‬‬ ‫אחרי הקונצרט הייתה מסיבה במלון והוזמנתי אליה‪ .‬לקחתי תכנייה והלכתי‬ ‫אל סטרווינסקי כדי לקבל חתימה‪ .‬הוא כמובן לא ידע את שמי‪ ,‬אז כתב לי‬ ‫בהקדשה – 'לספרן הטוב בעולם'"‪.‬‬

‫הסימפונית והענקים‪ :‬פבלו קזאלס‬ ‫פעמיים שיתפה התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים רשות השידור פעולה עם הצ'לן והמנצח האגדי פבלו קזאלס‪ .‬הפעם‬ ‫הראשונה נערכה באוגוסט ‪ .1969‬קזאלס‪ ,‬שהיה אז בן ‪ ,93‬הגיע לישראל במסגרת פסטיבל ישראל כדי לנצח בקיסריה על‬ ‫ביצוע לאורטוריה אל פסאברה ("האבוס")‪ ,‬שחיבר כחלק מסדרת הופעות אותה כינה בתואר "מסע צלב למען השלום"‪ .‬לצדו‬ ‫של קזאלס סייע המנצח אלכסנדר שניידר‪.‬‬ ‫לבקשת קזאלס‪ ,‬תכניית הקונצרט כללה מסר של שלום‪ ,‬שבו הביע הצ'לן עמדה מפורשת נגד פשיזם ונגד נשק גרעיני‪.‬‬ ‫באותה עת היתה ספרד נתונה תחת שלטונו הדיקטטורי של פרנקו‪ ,‬ובריאיון שנערך למחרת הקונצרט הביע קזאלס את‬ ‫חששו שלעולם לא ישוב עוד לספרד‪ .‬עוד סיפר קזאלס בראיון שהוא חש כישראלי‪" :‬אני אכן ישראלי מאומץ‪ .‬אימצתי את‬ ‫עצמי לישראל! לעתים אני תוהה‪ :‬אולי זורם בעורקיי דם יהודי?"‬ ‫ב‪ ,1973-‬בהזמנת ידידו אייזק שטרן‪ ,‬הגיע קזאלס לירושלים כדי לנצח על תזמורת שהורכבה מבני נוער מצטיינים ומנגני‬ ‫התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות השידור‪ .‬הפרויקט היה אחד מן הראשונים שהתקיימו במרכז למוסיקה במשכנות‬ ‫שאננים‪ ,‬ובהנחייתו של קזאלס הקליטו שתי התזמורות יחד‪ .‬בקונצרט‪ ,‬שנערך בתאטרון החאן‪ ,‬השתתפו הנגנים הצעירים‬ ‫בלבד‪ .‬היה זה הקונצרט האחרון שקיים קזאלס בחייו‪.‬‬

‫סיפורה של התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות השידור‬ ‫‪ ‬לידה מפתיעה‬ ‫ב‪ 30-‬במרץ ‪ 1936‬פילח את האתר קולו של המנהל‬ ‫הבריטי של הדואר בפלשתינה‪ ,‬הקולונל האדסון‪,‬‬ ‫בהכריזו לראשונה "כאן ירושלים קוראת (“ ‪This‬‬ ‫‪ .)”is Jerusalem Calling‬מיד אחריו נשמע קולו‬ ‫של המתרגם לעברית יצחק עבאדי – "הלו הלו‪,‬‬ ‫ירושלים מדברת" ולאחריו נשא את נאומו הנציב‬ ‫העליון‪ ,‬סר ארתור ווקופ‪ ,‬ובכך חנך באופן רשמי‬ ‫את שירות השידור של פלשתינה‪ .‬את ההשקה‬ ‫החגיגית ערכו על גבעה ברמאללה‪ ,‬במקום שבו‬ ‫הוצב המשדר‪ .‬כבר מראשית ימי השידור הציבורי‬ ‫הייתה למוסיקה חלק נכבד בתוכן המשודר‪ ,‬ואף‬ ‫נודעה לה משנה חשיבות בימי המנדט הבריטי‪,‬‬ ‫מאחר שהמדיניות שהצהיר עליה הנציב העליון‬ ‫גרסה שיש להימנע מתוכן פוליטי לכל דבר ועניין‪.‬‬ ‫הצלילים המוזיקליים הראשונים שהושמעו‬ ‫באירוע ההשקה בקעו מן הפסנתר של אריך‬ ‫(אריה) זקס‪ ,‬שניגן את המבוא לשיר שהושר מפי‬ ‫חיים ויטוריו ויינברג‪.‬‬ ‫בימים הראשונים נוגנו הקטעים המוזיקליים‬ ‫של הרדיו הצעיר בידי חבורה של מוזיקאים‪,‬‬ ‫רובם עולים מארצות מרכז אירופה‪ ,‬שהרכיבו‬ ‫את התזמורת הקאמרית של שירות השידור‬ ‫של פלשתינה‪ .‬את האנסמבל ניהל כראל שלמון‬ ‫(שבמקור שמו היה קארל סלומון)‪.‬‬ ‫שלמון מספר בזיכרונותיו‪" :‬מעטים יודעים שגם‬ ‫תזמורת רשות השידור באה לעולם בזכותו‬ ‫של ברוניסלב הוברמן (מייסדה של התזמורת‬ ‫הפילהרמונית הישראלית)‪ ,‬אם כי על דרך השלילה‪.‬‬ ‫נהגנו אז לשדר מדי חודש קונצרט של התזמורת‬ ‫הארץ‪-‬ישראלית תמורת תשלום של ‪ 50‬לא"י‪,‬‬ ‫סכום דמיוני באותם ימים‪ .‬כאשר הגיע הוברמן‬

‫לביקורו השני בארץ‪ ,‬התנגד להסדר זה‪ ,‬שכן‬ ‫חשש כי המאזינים הפוטנציאליים‪ ,‬במקום לקנות‬ ‫כרטיסים‪ ,‬ישבו בבית ויפתחו את המקלטים‪ .‬עם‬ ‫ביטול השידורים נשארו בידינו ‪ 50‬הלא"י‪ .‬הצעתי‬ ‫להשקיען בשכירת נגנים שירכיבו תזמורת‬ ‫קאמרית קבועה של "קול ישראל"‪ .‬אחד‪-‬עשר‬ ‫נגנים במשכורת חודשית של לירה וחצי לנגן – זו‬ ‫הייתה אפוא ההתחלה"‪.‬‬

‫יעקובי‪ ,‬שהיה תלמידו של הינדמית‪ ,‬ג'ני שמרצלר‬ ‫ואריה מירקין בויולה‪ ,‬דניאל הופמקלר בצ'לו‪,‬‬ ‫וילהלם פון בלייזה (לימים דה בלייז) היה נגן‬ ‫החליל‪ ,‬ושבתאי פטרושקה בכלי נשיפה ממתכת‪.‬‬ ‫ב‪ 1939-‬החלה התזמורת בסדרת הקונצרטים‬ ‫השבועיים באולם ימק"א בירושלים‪ ,‬ושם התקיימו‬ ‫הקונצרטים עד ‪ .1975‬בסוף שנת ‪ 1986‬עברה‬ ‫התזמורת לביתה הקבוע באולם ע"ש הנרי קראון‪.‬‬

‫מלבד מתן מענה לצרכים של שירות השידור‪,‬‬ ‫חדורים ברוח חלוצית‪ ,‬שמו לעצמם חברי‬ ‫האנסמבל למטרה לסלול את הדרך ולהכין את‬ ‫הקרקע לחיים מוזיקליים ברי קיימא בירושלים‪.‬‬ ‫לפיכך כללה תכנית הקונצרטים ב‪ 1938-‬הן‬ ‫קונצרט שנערך בימק"א לרגל חג המולד‪ ,‬בניצוחו‬ ‫של המנצח בוגר אוקספורד קרופורד מק'נייר‪,‬‬ ‫הן בכורה ארצישראלית לקונצ'רטו לכינור מאת‬ ‫שומאן‪ ,‬בנגינת הכנר סשה פרנס כסולן‪ ,‬הן‬ ‫תכניות קונצרטים מיוחדות שבהן בוצעו יצירות‬ ‫מאת מלחינים פעילים שחיו באותם ימים בארץ‬ ‫ישראל‪ .‬בקונצרטים שבוצעו ב‪ 1938-‬נכללו‬ ‫ביצירות האלה סוויטות לכלי מיתר‪ ,‬שחוברו על‬ ‫ידי ורדינה שלונסקי‪ ,‬יוסף טל (גרואנטל) ומרדכי‬ ‫סתר (סטרומירסקי); וריאציות על שיר פלשתיני‬ ‫מאת כראל שלמון; ושיר ערש למיתרים מאת פטר‬ ‫גרדנביץ‪.‬‬

‫עם קום המדינה קיבלה התזמורת ב‪ 1948-‬את‬ ‫המעמד הרשמי של תזמורת הרדיו‪ ,‬תזמורת "קול‬ ‫ישראל"‪ .‬מראשיתה‪ ,‬כתזמורת של ממשלת ישראל‪,‬‬ ‫בתוקף היותה חלק מרשות השידור ומאוחר יותר‬ ‫כ"תזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים"‪ ,‬משתתפת‬ ‫התזמורת בכל האירועים ההיסטוריים של בירת‬ ‫ישראל‪ .‬בתור תזמורת הרדיו הלאומי ממלאת‬ ‫התזמורת את ייעודה הטבעי בטיפוח המוזיקה‬ ‫הישראלית‪ ,‬בארץ ובחו"ל‪.‬‬ ‫עם השנים גדלה התזמורת במספר נגניה והרחיבה‬ ‫את תכניותיה‪ .‬בשנות ה‪ ,70-‬תחת ניהולו האמנותי‬ ‫של מאסטרו גארי ברתיני‪ ,‬גדלה התזמורת מהרכב‬ ‫של ‪ 50‬נגנים לתזמורת סימפונית מלאה בת ‪90‬‬ ‫נגנים‪.‬‬

‫מאנסמבל לתזמורת‬ ‫במהלך ‪ 1938‬ארגנו שלמון ומקנייר מחדש את‬ ‫האנסמבל והקימו את התזמורת של שירות‬ ‫השידור של פלשתינה‪ .‬עם החברים המייסדים‬ ‫של התזמורת נמנו סשה פרנס כנגן כינור ראשון‪,‬‬ ‫וולפגנג שוקן ופרנקל ככינור שני‪ ,‬חנוך היינריך‬

‫תאריכים בולטים בתולדות התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪:‬‬ ‫‪ 1936‬קראל שלמון מייסד את להקת אולפן‪,‬‬ ‫במסגרת המחלקה העברית של ״קול ישראל״‪.‬‬ ‫במקביל פועלת גם תזמורת קאמרית (מנצח‬ ‫ראשי – קרופורד מקנייר) המורכבת מנגני להקת‬ ‫האולפן עם נגנים נוספים‪ ,‬מורים בקונסרבטוריון‬ ‫הירושלמי‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 30.3.1936‬הקונצרט הראשון מתקיים בבנין מלון‬ ‫״פאלאס״‪ 25 ,‬נגנים בניצוחו של מיכאל טאובה‬ ‫מנגנים ״מוזיקת לילה זעירה״ של מוצרט‪ ,‬סונטה‬ ‫לצ׳לו מאת אקלס בתזמורו של קראל שלמון‬ ‫(סולנית – תלמה ילין) ומשתתף גם הבריטון יליד‬ ‫ירושלים – ויטוריו ויינברג‪ ,‬בלוית הפסנתרן אריה‬ ‫זקס‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1938‬הוחלט על הקמת ״תזמורת הרדיו״‬ ‫שתפקידה לערוך קונצרט פומבי שבועי בכל יום‬ ‫ג׳ באולם ימק״א וקונצרטים מן האולפן בימים ב׳‬ ‫ו‪-‬ה׳ בשבוע‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 13.7.1938‬הקונצרט הראשון של ״תזמורת‬ ‫הרדיו״ בבנין מלון ״פאלאס״ בניצוחו של‬ ‫קראל שלמון‪ .‬ראובן אפרתי (כנר‪ ,‬ויולן‪ ,‬נגן‬ ‫סקסופון ומנדולינה) מתמנה עוזר למנהל‬ ‫המחלקה בענייני תכנון‪ ,‬וכעבור זמן – אחראי על‬ ‫התזמורת‪ .‬החזרות של התזמורת נערכות באולם‬ ‫ההסתדרות‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1939‬ראשית הקונצרטים באולם ימק״א‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1948‬בתקופת מלחמת השחרור שודרו קונצרטי‬ ‫התזמורת מבית החלוצות ברחביה‪ ,‬לאחר‬ ‫שהלגיון הערבי ״תפס״ את בית השידור ברח׳‬ ‫הלני המלכה‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1955-1957‬התזמורת הורחבה ומנתה ‪ 58‬נגנים‪.‬‬ ‫שני מנצחיה הראשיים‪ :‬היינץ פרוידנטאל וגיאורג‬ ‫זינגר‪.‬‬

‫מ‪ 1957-‬התזמורת פועלת עם מנצחים וסולנים‬ ‫אורחים‪ ,‬מן הארץ ומחו״ל‪ .‬שבתי פטרושקה‪,‬‬ ‫מנהל מחלקת המוזיקה ב״קול ישראל״ ממונה‪,‬‬ ‫בתוקף תפקידו‪ ,‬גם על התזמורת‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1962-1972‬מנדי רודן‪ ,‬עולה מרומניה‪ ,‬מתמנה‬ ‫מנהל מוזיקלי ומנצח ראשי‪.‬‬ ‫יהודה פיקלר– מנהל אדמיניסטרטיבי (עד סוף‬ ‫‪.)1986‬‬ ‫‪ 1972-1976‬לוקאס פוס מתמנה למנהל מוזיקלי‬ ‫ומנצח ראשי‪ .‬שמה של התזמורת מוסב ל״תזמורת‬ ‫סימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות השידור״‪ .‬מיכל‬ ‫זמורה‪-‬כהן ממונה על התזמורת‪ ,‬בתוקף תפקידה‬ ‫כמנהלת חטיבת המוזיקה ב‪-‬״קול ישראל״‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1974‬מניין הנגנים בתזמורת – ‪ .71‬צורפו נגנים‬ ‫עולים מברית המועצות‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1978-1986‬גארי ברתיני מתמנה למנהלה‬ ‫המוזיקלי ומנצחה הראשי של התזמורת‪.‬‬ ‫מניין הנגנים – ‪ .97‬רפורמה במבנה התכניות‬ ‫והקונצרטים‪ ,‬עלייה ניכרת במספר המנויים‬ ‫ושיפור משמעותי ברמה האמנותית‪.‬‬ ‫בתקופה זו נערכו גם סיורים בחו״ל‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 9.2.1986‬חנוכת ביתה החדש של התזמורת –‬ ‫אולם הקונצרטים ע״ש הנרי קראון‪ .‬בקונצרט‬ ‫הפתיחה‪ :‬יצירות מאת מרדכי סתר‪ ,‬מנדלסון‬ ‫ורוול‪ .‬משתתפים‪ :‬אייזק שטרן‪ ,‬מקהלות ״רינת״‬ ‫ו‪-‬״האקדמיה למוזיקה בירושלים״‪ ,‬מנצח – גארי‬ ‫ברתיני‪.‬‬ ‫בינואר ‪ 1987‬הוחלט על הקמת עמותת התזמורת‪,‬‬ ‫בראשותו של עו״ד יחזקאל בייניש‪.‬‬ ‫אייב (אברהם) כהן מתמנה מנהל כללי‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1988-1989‬לורנס פוסטר יועץ מוזיקלי‪.‬‬

‫‪ - 1991‬מונו גדעון פז כמנהל כללי ודוד שלון‬ ‫כמנהל מוזיקלי‪ ‬ומנצח ראשי‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1992‬דוד שלון מתחיל את כהונתו כמנהלה‬ ‫המוזיקלי ומנצחה הראשי של התזמורת‪ .‬שלון‬ ‫שימש בתפקיד כ‪ 8-‬שנים עד מותו הפתאומי‬ ‫בשנת ‪.2000‬‬ ‫‪ 1994‬גדעון פז מכהן כיועץ מוזיקלי של‬ ‫התזמורת ולמנהלה הכללי מתמנה חבר‬ ‫התזמורת סוזיה רודן‪ .‬‬ ‫‪ 2003‬לאחר שמתגלים אי סדרים כלכליים‪,‬‬ ‫התזמורת נכנסת לתקופת פעילות תחת מפרק‬ ‫זמני‪ .‬ליאון בוטשטיין מתמנה למנהל מוזיקלי‬ ‫ומנצח ראשי ומנכ"ל פסטיבל ישראל‪ ,‬יוסי טל‪-‬גן‪,‬‬ ‫למנהל כללי‪ .‬כחלק ממאמצי ההבראה‪ ,‬נגני‬ ‫התזמורת מסכימים לוויתורים על חלק משכרם‪.‬‬ ‫בתקופה זו מיוצבת ההתנהלות הכלכלית‬ ‫והתזמורת נעמדת בהדרגה על רגליים איתנות‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 1.1.2008‬התזמורת מסיימת את החזר חובותיה‬ ‫ואיום הפירוק מוסר‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 2009‬יאיר שטרן מתמנה למנכ"ל‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 2011‬פרדריק שאזלן מתמנה למנהלה המוזיקלי‬ ‫ומנצחה הראשי של התזמורת‪ .‬בהנהגתו מגיעה‬ ‫התזמורת לסטנדרטים חדשים של מקצועיות‬ ‫ויכולות מוזיקליות‪ ,‬שבאות לידי ביטוי באולמות‬ ‫מלאים והזמנות הולכות ותכופות לסיורים בחו"ל‪.‬‬ ‫‪ 2015‬בחודש פברואר‪ ,‬בהזמנת ארגון יונסקו‪,‬‬ ‫מבצעת התזמורת את הסימפוניה מס' ‪ 13‬מאת‬ ‫שוסטקוביץ' (באבי יאר) באירוע שנערך בפריז‬ ‫לציון ‪ 70‬שנה לשחרור אושוויץ‪.‬‬

‫הסימפונית והענקים‪ :‬אייזק שטרן‬ ‫ב‪ 8.2.1986-‬נפל דבר בירושלים‪ .‬לראשונה‪ ,‬לאחר ‪ 2,000‬שנות גלות‪ ,‬היה לה לעיר אולם סימפוני משלה‪ 50 .‬שנה לאחר הקמתו של הרדיו‬ ‫המנדטורי והתחלת השידור המוסיקלי‪ ,‬נבנה בירושלים אולם ראוי לקונצרטים‪ ,‬שכלל גם תשתית טכנולוגית חדישה לשידורם‪.‬‬ ‫אייזק שטרן היה הסולן וגארי ברתיני המנצח בקונצרט הפתיחה החגיגי‪ ,‬שחנך את אולם הבית של התזמורת הסימפונית ירושלים‪ ,‬רשות‬ ‫השידור‪ ,‬הלוא הוא האולם הסימפוני על שם הנרי קראון‪ .‬בקונצרט המרגש‪ ,‬שנערך במעמד נשיא המדינה חיים הרצוג וראש עיריית‬ ‫ירושלים טדי קולק‪ ,‬ביצע שטרן את הקונצ'רטו לכינור של מנדלסון‪ .‬ימים אחדים לפני הקונצרט הוענק לשטרן התואר "נאמן ירושלים"‪,‬‬ ‫ולאחר הקונצרט התרועע הכנר עם כבוד הנשיא הרצוג‪ ,‬והשניים החליפו חוויות מפגישתם בזמן מלחמת השחרור‪.‬‬ ‫שטרן הופיע עם התזמורת עוד קודם‪ ,‬בקונצרט מיוחד לרגל יום העצמאות ה‪ 30-‬של מדינת ישראל‪ ,‬ובו ניגן את הרומנסות של‬ ‫שוסטקוביץ' בצוותא עם הצ'לן מסטיסלב רוסטרופוביץ' ואשתו‪.‬‬

The JSO and the Giants: Isaac Stern On February 8th, 1986, a new era began in the Jerusalem cultural sphere: the capital city of Israel finally received its own symphony hall. 50 years after the foundation of the British Mandate’s Palestine Broadcast Service, and the beginning of musical broadcast, the city of Jerusalem could finally boast a proper symphonic hall of its own, which included a state of the art technological infrastructure for television and radio broadcast. The new hall, conceived and built as the home for Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, IBA, was named the Henry Crown Symphony Hall.

At the grand consecration, Isaac Stern performed Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Gary Bertini at the podium.

The concert was attended by President Chaim Herzog and Mayor Teddy Kollek, who awarded Stern the prestigious Jerusalem Trustee Decoration a few days earlier. After the concert Stern associated with President Herzog and the two men exchanged memories from their meeting during the War of Independence.

Stern has actually performed with the orchestra once before, on a memorable special concert for Israel’s 30th anniversary, in which he performed Shostakovich’s Seven Romances together with the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, soprano Galina Vishnevskaya.

Landmarks In The History Of The Orchestra 1936 Karel Salomon founds the "Studio Ensemble" within the framework of the Hebrew Department of Kol Israel, in parallel with the Chamber Music Orchestra (Principal conductor – Crawford McNair) which was composed of musicians from the Jerusalem Conservatoire.

30.3.1936 First concert performed at the Palace Hotel: Fifteen musicians under the baton of Michael Taube play Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart, a Sonata for Cello by Eccles, orchestrated by Karel Salomon (soloist – Thelma Yellin) and the Jerusalem-born baritone Vittorio Weinberg, accompanied by pianist Arieh Sachs.

1938 Decision made to found the "Radio Orchestra" whose role was to perform weekly public concerts every Tuesday at the YMCA, with studio broadcasts every Monday and Thursday.

13.7.1938 The first concert of the Radio Orchestra takes place at Palace Hotel under the baton of Karel Salomon. Reuven Efrati (violinist, violist, saxophonist and mandolin player) is Assistant Head of the department and is later promoted to Orchestra Inspector. Rehearsals of the Orchestra held at the Histadrut Building.

1939 First concerts performed at the YMCA. During the War of Independence the Orchestra is forced to perform at Beit Ha’Chalutzot, as the Arab Legion had captured the Broadcasting Station on Heleni Hamalka Street.

1955-1957 Orchestra now enlarged and consists of 58 musicians.

First conductors were Heinz Freudenthal and George Singer.

1957 Shabtai Petrushka, Director of Music Programmes at Kol Israel is also Director of the Orchestra.

1962-1972 Mendi Rodan, an immigrant from Romania, is appointed Music Director and Chief Conductor. Yehuda Fickler – Administrative Director (until 1986).

1972-1976 Lukas Foss appointed Music Director and Chief Conductor.

Orchestra’s matitle changed to JERUSALEM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, IBA. Michal Zmora-Cohen acts as Director of the Orchestra within her role as Director of Music at Kol Israel.

1974 Musicians now number 71 with the addition of immigrants from the USSR. 1978-1986 Gary Bertini appointed Music Director and Chief Conductor. Musicians now number 97. Structure and planning of concerts changed, substantial increase in number of subscribers and great improvement in artistic performance.

During this period the orchestra also undertakes overseas tours.

9.2.1986 Consecration of the orchestra's new home, the Henry Crown Symphony Hall.

Opening concert: works by Modechai Seter, Mendelssohn and Ravel, conducted by Gary Bertini. Taking part: Isaac Stern, the Rinat Choir and the Jerusalem Music Academy Choir.

1991 Gideon Paz appointed General Director.

1994 Gideon Paz is appointed Music Advisor. Suzia Rodan appointed General Manager.

1992-2000 David Shalon is appointed Music Director and Chief Conductor. Shalon served in this role until close to his untimely death in 2000.

2003 Following financial irregularities, the administration is disbanded and the orchestra begins a period of Temporary Liquidation. Leon Botstein appointed Music Director and Chief Conductor and the General Director of the Israel Festival, Yossi Tal-Gan, is appointed as General Director.

1.1.2008 The JSO-IBA concludes its payback plan and the threat of Temporary Liquidation is lifted.

2009-present Yair Stern is appointed General Director.

2011-present Frédéric Chaslin is appointed Music Director and Chief Conductor of the JSO. Under Chaslin's leadership the orchestra attains a new level of excellence and musical abilities, acknowledged by full halls and frequent invitations to perform overseas.

2015 In February the JSO is invited by UNESCO to Paris to perform Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13, Babi Yar, in a special concert commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The story of the Orchestra An Unexpected Genesis On March 30, 1936, the voice of the postmaster general Colonel Hudson burst into the ether, announcing for the first time “This is Jerusalem Calling”, followed by a Hebrew translation and a speech by the High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, who officially inaugurated the Palestine Broadcasting Service. Music was part of public broadcasted content from its very inception, even more so in the years of the British Mandate, since the admitted policy was not to involve any political content whatsoever. The first musical sounds that were heard on that occasion were those of the piano of Erich (Aryeh) Sachs, who played an introduction to a song sung by Chaim Vittorio Weinberg.

Initially, the musical needs of the young radio station were supplied by the small Chamber Orchestra of the Palestine Broadcasting Service, which was directed by the singer-conductor Karel Salmon (originally Karl Salomon).

Salmon recounts in his memoirs: "Very few people are aware of the fact that the Radio Orchestra was also founded, in parallel, by Bronislav Huberman. Once a month we used to broadcast a concert performed by the Eretz-Israel Orchestra for a fee of 50 Eretz-Israel Pounds, a fantastic sum in those days. When Huberman arrived in Palestine for the second time, he was against this as he felt that the captive audience was merely sitting at home listening to the radio and would not bother

to buy tickets for the concert. He therefore cancelled the broadcasts and we were left with 50 Pounds. Advised the Management of the Radio Station to use this money to hire more players and establish a chamber music ensemble. Eleven players were employed on a monthly basis at a fee of one-and-a-half pounds per player. This was the beginning."

Apart from fulfilling these necessary musical obligations, in a true visionary and pioneering fashion, the ensemble set itself to pave the way and establish the ground for future musical activity in Jerusalem. Appropriately, their 1938 program included a Christmas concert given at the Y.M.C.A and conducted

by Oxford conductor Crawford McNair, as well as the Palestinian première of Schumann’s Concerto for Violin, with the solo part played by Sasha Parnes, and special programs featuring works by local composers living in Palestine. In 1938, these works included Suites for Strings by Verdina Shlonsky, Joseph Tal (Gruenthal) and Mordecai Seter (Staromirsky), Variations on a Palestinian Song by Salmon, and a “Berceuse” for strings by Peter Gradenwitz.

From Ensemble to Orchestra In 1938, Salmon and McNair reorganized the ensemble and formed the Palestine Broadcasting Service Orchestra, among whose founding members one can mention: Sasha Parnes as the concertmeister; Wolfgang Schoeken and Frankel as second violins; Chanoch (Heinrich) Jacoby, who was a pupil of Hindemith, as well as Jenny Schmerzler and Arieh Mirkin on violas; Daniel Hofmekler on cello; flutist Wlihelm von Blaise; and Shabtai Petrushka on brass instruments. In 1939 the orchestra began its weekly concerts at the YMCA, where they were held until 1975, long after it was renamed the Kol Israel (Israeli Broadcasting Association) Orchestra in 1948.

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra played a crucial role in shaping and developing the cultural sphere of the newly formed state. Much in the spirit of the original small ensemble, the orchestra emphasized the commissioning and performance of modern works, both Israeli and foreign, and combined both local soloists and conductors with guest artists.

Over the years the orchestra expanded both in size and in aspiration. During the 1970s, under Artistic Directorship of Gary Bertini the orchestra grew significantly to encompass over 90 musicians.

The JSO and the Giants: Pablo Casals The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra had collaborated with the legendary Pablo Casals on two separate occasions, the first of which was in August 1969. Casals, who was 93 at the time, was invited by the Israel Festival to lead a Caesarea performance of his oratorio El Pessebre (The Manger), which he toured as part of his self proclaimed “crusade for peace”. He was assisted by conductor Alexander Schneider.

At Casals’ request, the concert brochure included a message of peace, in which he expressed his explicit views against fascism and nuclear arms. At the time Spain was still under the Franco dictatorship, and in an interview conducted the morning after the Caesarea concert Casals expressed his concern that he will never be able to return to Spain during his lifetime. In that fascinating interview Casals had also said that he feels like an Israeli: “I am indeed an adopted Israeli. I adopted myself to Israel! Sometimes I wonder: maybe there is Jewish blood flowing in my veins?”

In 1973, at the invitation of his friend Isaac Stern, Casals arrived in Jerusalem to inaugurate the recently opened Jerusalem Music Center at Mishkenot Sha’ananim. Casals led a recording by an orchestra consisting of excelling young musicians who played alongside JSO musicians. The concert, which was held at the Khan Theater and included only the youth orchestra, was the last concert which Casals gave during his lifetime. He passed away shortly after at his home in Puerto Rico.

As they drive away I hear Props call me from the limo - `Fiiickler!

Fiiickler!! Come here!` and as I get there - `the maestro wants to talk to you`.`I forgot my score`, Stravinsky says to me. 'Maestro`, I said, `I'll be responsible that your score will wait here. Do not worry`. But he insists, persistently. So what, I'm going to argue with Stravinsky? I went back down, gave him the score, they drove off.

The concert is getting closer, everything fills up, Zalman Shazar, our president, is already there, and Stravinsky comes out of the black limo, very slowly, assisted by Robert Craft by his side, and we all wait as he boards the stage… "I forgot my score…", he says.

Those seconds of silence, O Lord... The suspense was horrible. He is reluctant to start and it's a live broadcast and everyone is already there. That night God was on my side, I don't know where I have had the resourcefulness from… The South African conductor Joel Friedlander was also there – his role was to provide cues for the Tel Aviv Philharmonic Choir. I got up from the trumpet which I was playing at that concert, ran around – `Joel, give me your score!` - I grabbed the score and placed it on Stravinsky's stand.

Then everything went fine. Later, at the party in the hotel I went over with the concert program to ask for an autograph. Not knowing my name, Stravinsky wrote in the dedication: `to the world's greatest librarian`.

Stravinsky and the Kol Israel Orchestra On August 1964 Stravinsky and the Orchestra collaborated on

The JSO and the Giants: Otto Klemperer Over its 80 years, the orchestra had worked with some of the most legendary and inspiring musicians, who have contributed to the shaping of the orchestra’s spirit and heritage. First and foremost of all visiting artists was the legendary conductor Otto Klemperer, who conducted the orchestra on four different occasions – each with a unique story.

His first visit was nothing short of unexpected. In 1951 Klemperer stayed in Jerusalem on a family visit. At the invitation of Shabtai Petrushka, Klemperer, who had previously been denied the possibility of conducting the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, arrived at a rehearsal of the Kol Israel Orchestra. At the time, the radio orchestra was not regarded as a fully professional one and Petrushka expressed his apologies and concerns for the quality of the orchestra.

Klemperer sat through the rehearsal and then turned to the conductor Hannan Schlezinger in German and courteously requested permission to work with the orchestra. Less than 5 minutes passed before Klemperer paused and exclaimed at Petrushka: “You are horrible yourself! This is an excellent orchestra!”.

He then proceeded to lead the orchestra in an all-Mozart concert, held at the Edison Cinema Hall.

Under the guidance of Klemperer the orchestra was imbued with the seeds of excellence and pride.

His Second visit, in 1967, came in late May, on the eve of the Six Day War, and was dedicated to the Hebrew University; during the third, in 1970, while the conductor was already 85 years old, he was awarded a special Israeli passport in a special moving gesture; and in the following year, shortly before his death, Klemperer asked to conduct the Kol Israel Symphony Orchestra one last time at the venue where he first led the orchestra twenty years earlier. His final concert in Israel was held again at the Edison Cinema.

"Over the course of my long life I have seen most cities and most countries of the world, but I always aspired to find myself a purpose. I have now found it. I am delighted to have returned home".

Dear audience, We are proud to open the celebrations for the 80th season of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, IBA, under the baton of our renowned Musical Director FrĂŠdĂŠric Chaslin.

The orchestra has been a solid cornerstone of the cultural life of Jerusalem, and of Israel as a whole, since its beginning broadcasts as the Israel Radio Orchestra in 1938.

In its 80 years, the JSO has performed with some of the greatest musicians in the world, among them Pablo Casals, Isaac Stern, Arthur Rubinstein, Otto Klemperer, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others.

The orchestra numbers 75 gifted musicians. About half of them were raised, educated, and trained in Israel, and about half have come here from around the globe.

Our 80th concert season will kick off with a festive concert in which, among other pieces, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony will be performed.

Throughout the season, the orchestra will feature musicians who have been favorites of audiences in previous seasons, such as Tabea Zimmermann, Olli Mustonen, and Kolja Blacher. We will also host the great pianist Menahem Pressler (now at the age of 93!), Guy Braunstein, and Alexander Korsantia, along with many other guests.

The Henry Crown Auditorium, home of the JSO, will be filled to capacity in a series of concerts for the whole family, conducted by popular Chen Zimbalista. With these concerts, the orchestra happily takes on a special challenge - instilling a love of music within the next generation.

Despite the changes that are taking place in public broadcasting, the JSO will continue to entertain its listeners throughout the country and indeed the world, via concert broadcasts on via The Voice of Music.

You are invited to join us in celebrating the 80th season of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.

Dear audience from Jerusalem and beyond, An anniversary is generally about a round number or a symbolic number. This season we are celebrating 80 years of the JSO-IBA, as well as the 100th birthday of the most versatile genius of the American music world - Leonard Bernstein.

It is interesting to remember that the orchestra came to life before the State of Israel was established. It means that even before the Jewish people had its own independent state, Jerusalem residents were eager to have an orchestra in the city that would eventually become the capital of the nation.

This is why I have decided to set a program that reflects the vibrant glow which radiates from the city, embracing far-reaching points touched by rays of light from Jerusalem, like a lighthouse calling to all ships wishing to find home and comfort. They are cities around the world that resonate with Jerusalem, and countries which have nourished its musical repertoire, but also cities where new Israeli music is currently being heard, thanks to radio broadcasts as well as live performances.

The Jerusalem audience, whom I have known almost 20 years, is sometimes reluctant to listen to their own countrymen and women, and this is not specific of Jerusalem; but let me gently remind you that these composers are the treasure of our city and our orchestra, because this is what our country produces, and yet these composers find more recognition abroad. So I take pride and pleasure in setting a new piece from Israeli composers in almost all of the programs. From my experience, some of you might not feel completely at home with one piece or another, but in the end, we all discover that a moment spent with a new work, even if it feels strange or awkward, is a moment that enriches our mind. Because it exercises our critical sense of imagination, it transports our mind off of its routine path.

Season after season, I bring more and more great conductors and soloists to our city, and this season will not be an exception. JSO-IBA is gaining more and more of a reputation of excellence and more and more outstanding artists are willing and eager to perform with us.

Therefore, I wish you an excellent 80th season of musical delights. I wish to warmly thank my friend Gideon Paz for his invaluable help in bringing important artists to us, and providing the necessary brainstorming that the creation of a season requires.
