New Shenandoah Valley “Buy Fresh Buy Local” guide released 2013-2014

MT. CRAWFORD CREAMERY OPENS ITS DOORS With all of the places to find local food in the Shenandoah Valley - farmers markets, grocers, restaurants- enjoying the best fruits and vegetables the Shenandoah Valley has to offer has never been easier. Finding local milk on your grocery store shelves, however, was quite a challenge...until now. Mt. Crawford Creamery in Rockingham County has opened its doors.

Mt. Crawford Creamery is located

Karen Kapper t contributed to this stor y.

off Route 11, near i-81’s exit 240. There are two other creameries in Virginia producing local, pasteurized milk, but Mt. Crawford Creamery is the first in the entire state that houses every part of milk production right on the farm, so customers can know exactly where their milk comes from.

The creamery is owned and operated by brothers Frank and Kenny Will and their families. After managing their dairy farm for decades, changes in the dairy industry over the last decade prompted dairy farmers Frank and Kenny Will to consider marketing their dairy differently--right to the consumer. After several years of research, study, and hard work, they are now open for business. Customers can also rest assured knowing that their milk was produced by farmers dedicated to protecting the Valley’s threatened streams and rivers-- the Will family’s conservation efforts have received accolades from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Mt. Crawford Creamery offers whole, 2%, skim and chocolate milk, fresh butter and cream of the highest quality at their new storefront and at many local retailers. Check www. mtcrawfordcreamery.com to learn more about this exciting new addition to the Valley and to find a retailer near you.

The new 2013-2014 Shenandoah Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local food directory is now available. This annual local food and farm directory is a project of Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), Valley Conservation Council, and community partners throughout the valley. The free publication is a guide to local food and farming in Augusta, Bath, Botetourt, Clarke, Frederick, Highland, Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties. Copies are available at county extension offices, farmers markets, natural food stores, independent grocers, public libraries, and other convenient locations throughout the counties featured in the guide. This year, the project has received a boost and additional support from Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit and Piedmont Environmental Council, whose partnership will enable every household in Clarke and Page County to receive a copy of the guide right in their mailbox. Almost 200 family farms, farmers’ markets, produce auctions, farm stands, orchards, Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) operations, and specialty farm products are featured in the Shenandoah Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local guide, which also features grocers and restaurants that have demonstrated a commitment to selling or cooking with locally grown farm products. This year’s edition of the guide includes two maps of the Valley’s farmers markets and community supported agriculture (CSAs)

operations. Additionally, the guide includes feature stories about farm-to-school programming, farmland protection, and a new on-farm creamery in the Shenandoah Valley. Now in its sixth edition, the guide continues to facilitate Shenandoah Valley residents’ connection with fresh locally grown food, neighboring farmers who grow the food and those markets and restaurants that are committed to using locally grown food in their businesses. There are 77 Buy Fresh Buy Local chapters across the country working to connect consum-

ers to sources of fresh, local food from growers they can know and trust. Virginia Cooperative Extension serves as the regional coordinator for the Shenandoah Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter. Buy Fresh Buy Local chapters are coordinated nationally by the FoodRoutes Network. For more information on the Shenandoah Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local Food Directory or the Shenandoah Valley Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter, visit www.buylocalshenvalley.org or contact VCE at 540-432-6029 ext. 106 or ext. 107. – From a release

Front Royal Business

An East Main Street retail theme - antiques Looking for period furnishings - Historic Downtown Front Royal is a good start By Carol Ballard Warren County Report

Although Front Royal’s Main Street is fast becoming a “Destination for out-of-town antique lovers, and while they’re always very happy to welcome tourists, many of the shop owners lament that more local people are missing out on the downtown experience, as well as missing what the shops have to offer. Main Street is no longer the hub of the everyday grocery or clothes shopping that it used to be. It, like many other main streets all over the country, has found itself being bypassed. Front Royal’s downtown business people have been fighting to keep it alive for many years and one hope is that its wealth of antique stores will lure residents back there. And many of those from out of town do enjoy strolling down the street, not only to browse in the shops, but to stop and have a meal or coffee, a glass of wine or a snack. “My friend from Charlotte, South

Carolina loves to come to Front Royal just to walk down Main Street. She and my family find it quaint and charming, said Terri Eshelman, who is partner with her husband Tom, in their Middle of Main Auction business. And I discovered, while visiting Main Street’s shops and their owners, that I had also been missing out on another whole dimension of my home town. Even though some of the objects for sale were at first glance, similar to the ones in every store, each shop’s unique layout and presentation, and friendly owners and staff, were enough to keep me interested in what I would find next. I especially enjoyed seeing the variety of vintage hand-made quilts. And, after the first glance, the more out of the ordinary and one-of-a-kind pieces began to stand out. The first shop I visited was Arleen Brown’s Antiques at 301 East Main St. across from the Gazebo. Owner Arleen Narron has been in business

there for about three years, but she and her husband Jay, who repairs and restores furniture, were in the antique and related businesses for many years in the northern Virginia area. Her shop is filled with an assortment of beautiful, well-cared for antiques and she has cabinets full of vintage jewelry, which she says is one of her loves and specialties. She also has Early American country antiques, textiles, furniture and Fine Art objects, and sells and buys used books. She’s selective about what is brought into the shop. “If I like something, and feel strongly about it, I buy it, she noted. Her sister, Joan Emery has also See ANTIQUES,

relocated to Front Royal from midtown Manhattan in New York City and deals in fine antiques, prints and paintings. Arleen said that they all love the town and the community. “The people are solid and generous, we’ve found,” she said. The next shop on my exploratory tour was Valley Finds, at 217 E. Main St., a few doors away from the Daily Grind cafe. Owner Kathy Soranzo has been at this location for almost six years and has collected what she calls an “eclectic mix”. The shop holds an attractive and interesting variety of vintage, repurposed, industrial and second-hand clothing, textiles, and furniture. A sweet collection of vintage hats fills one whole table near the women’s clothing at the back of the shop. “It’s not all antiques,” Kathy said. About two years ago she added a line of quality-label women’s second hand clothing and all have high-end labels such as Coldwater Creek and Chico’s, she noted. “You can’t find these labels pretty much anywhere else in the area or at these good prices.” she said. Along with selling merchandise in the store, they do custom-painting for people who want to spruce up their existing pieces of furniture. Her business card’s description reads “Refind Interiors and décor”. The business now has a web presence at www.valleyfinds.com.

I had an original Picasso ceramic, which has been sold. I get a lot of good stuff, and lots of original art work,â€? she said. Eckert’s store has a museum-like atmosphere. Many ancient and fascinating items are in the glass cases. Asian pieces share space with rare books, porcelain, finely crafted exquisite jewelry, and sculptures. “I gravitate toward the ornate and the unusual. I also look out for people looking for original art,â€? she declared. She also mentioned that while business has been good, 80 to 90 per cent of it is conducted online, “I would certainly like to have more people coming through the door,â€? she said. “Likeâ€? After another short walk on the same side of the street, I reached the very attractive entrance to Brooklyn’s Marketplace, a mini-mall with an owner who has a socially-conscious agenda. Proprietor Arlene Ballou, “Brooklyn, opened her store in March of this year and enthusiastically described how, as part of a non-profit, she helps people create start-up businesses. Her marketplace is filled with nine individual vendors, as varied as Vietnam veterans, people who have retired, but still want to work, and young or single mothers-all under one roof. It’s immediately obvious that she wants to be a positive part of the community. “We help people get started, do the marketing, and get them on their feet

so that when they go to out on their own, they know how to go about it. We act as an incubator for the first year or two. One person was only here for two months, and then went out on their own, she said. Others who can be helped by setting up in the space are the unemployed or chronically unemployed, formerly homeless or formerly incarcerated. Ballou said she has been doing this See ANTIQUES, 10

She wants to partner with local businesses to set up case-management programs and work with individuals to help them find jobs, stay in a job, become self-sustaining, get benefits like insurance and raises, and then do a two-year follow up. Last year, she and 15 partners got donations from some fine retail businesses through overstocks and liquidations and were able to help people with good-quality necessities like bedding and appliances. She says that she has wonderful group of vendors who are interested in being part of a community where they can help each other and work together. into his own antique and auction business at 122 E. Main St. and I found his Hayes Brothers Auctions about a block back down Main St. Owner Tony Hayes has been operating his auction and antique business for a year and a half. He said he learned the business from his parents. “I’ve been around it all my life and I enjoy the work. It’s a lot of fun to find out what’s brought in and also to go out and look for stuff, he said. He specializes in antiques, and collectibles, and carries a huge stock of costume jewelry and country crocks. “Business is good. It’s steadily been picking up as far as my auctions go. When people find out where or who you are, it gets better every time. I agree that Front Royal is becoming a Destination for antiques, but sometimes I think it would be good if we could move Main Street over on to Rt. 55. People come here and turn left to go to Skyline Drive and bypass Main Street, he observed. Tony is also a middle school teacher during the school year, but spends a lot of his time and summers doing the auction work. He conducts estate sales, and auctions real estate, as well. He takes items on consignment and wants people to know that he offers competitive consignment rates. See ANTIQUES, 11

“Crimson Cab, a new wine, benefits Front Royal animal shelter by Malcolm Barr, Sr. Warren County Report

The $600 bottle of “Covert Cab

A unique bottle of Virginia wine sold for $600 at auction at the Desert Rose Ranch and Winery in Hume, Va. The proceeds were presented (see photo) to the Humane Society of Warren County (HSWC) by winery proprietor Bob Claymier, a longtime supporter of HSWC. Called “Covert Cab, a play on Claymier’s career with the Central Intelligence Agency, the wine was produced and patented by Davis

Viniculture Research. It is a cross between the well known Virginia grape, Norton, and the popular Cabernet Sauvignon. Even Claymier was astonished by the auction result. He said, however, he could sense a higher than anticipated final bid as a lively auction quickly passed the $200 level. Desert Rose Winery is the first vineyard east of Kansas to bottle this particular grape. For the information of local wine lovers, Covert Cab, a Crimson Cabernet grape variety, is described by Claymier as “a big, bold red resem-

bling neither Norton nor Cabernet Sauvignon - unique indeed! Wine tastings at Desert Rose are held Thursdays through Mondays, 1-6 p.m. Dogs were welcome guests the day we arrived, and there were rescue horses in the paddock to pet and treat. The dog in the photo was

“borrowed from a customer for the check presentation. Claymier said the Covert Cab wine is scheduled for release Oct. 13. On that date, he promised to sell me the SECOND bottle ever produced for just $32. I’ll be there!

New Winchester restaurant “eM” dazzles with high end cuisine By Carol Ballard A brand new restaurant featuring “American Casual” cuisine and named “eM” has just opened in Old Town Winchester, just half a block off the Walking Mall. Word has spread and the 42-person dining room is already filled so often that reservations are highly recommended. Owner/Chef Will Mason and business partner and manager Liz Conn, are only a month into their venture at 19 E. Boscawen St. They call their menu “flexible” because it varies from one night to the next. “Some dishes change every night,” said Will. “When we run out of an ingredient, we replace it with something else.” The exceptions to that are the succulent seared scallops and pan roasted duck breast dishes which have survived as favorites. “Such hits don’t change,” he said. The dining room has a calm, clean, inviting feeling, with pale yellow walls, shining hardwood floors, black chairs, tables set with geometric dishes, and accented with purple

napkins. “We wanted a casual, unpretentious atmosphere where people can wear jeans. People say it feels like they’re in a big city when they walk in, somewhere like Richmond, Washington D.C. or New York City,” Will explained. Both Will and Liz are longtime area residents. Will has traveled extensively since graduating from Handley High School, but he grew up in Winchester and several family members still live here. After attending the University of Richmond, he polished his cooking skills at Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Norfolk, Va., and was chef at the Mimslyn Inn in Luray for 13 years. His cooking travels took him to Charleston, South Carolina; Denver, Colorado; Jackson, Montana; Last Chance, Idaho; and Key West, Florida. But he’s glad to be back home and observed that Winchester’s downtown area has become a “Destination” since its renovation. Their choice of dishes is based on the kinds of food they’d like to eat, and characterized themselves as

“Foodies”. He added that they’re proud to be able to offer 14 different kinds of wine that can be ordered by the glass. Samples of the high end fare they like to make for their apprecia-

tive food fans include such treats as Grilled flank steak with mint chimmichurri, with gratin potatoes and asparagus. Will especially recommended the popular favorite-Scallops wrapped in prosciutto, with as-

paragus risotto. Whenever possible, dishes are made with vegetables, fruit and artisan cheeses, obtained from local See eM, 17

Save the old Sandy’s Diner move launched

An effort to save the old Sandy ’s Diner building on North Shenandoah Avenue in Front Royal has been launched by photographer-screenwriter Julius Neelley. Neelley contacted this reporter, then the EDA and Warren Heritage Society in an attempt to have the building preserved for use elsewhere. The current location is earmarked for development a new fast-food business, Popeye’s Chicken. And while the diner’s interior is in bad shape, Neelley believes interest in the distinctive Diner shell would be of interest to someone. Pictured is the Diner’s exterior today and a collage of a diner interior and the movie “Twister as it screened at the Stephen’s City Family Drive -in. Hmm, a drive-in concession stand exterior perhaps?

Town Council takes up Avtex odors and Park & Ride speeders By Dan McDermott Warren County Report

Town Council agendas are usually short on Washington Redskin game nights and September 9ths meeting was no exception. That said, it was pretty interesting. Updating the town seal Timothy P. Ratigan of Canterbury Rd. noted that this year is the 225th

anniversary of the town and suggested that the town’s decorative seal be updated to add the year of Front Royal’s founding, 1788. Ratigan said he had discussed the matter with Vice Mayor N. Shae Parker, owner of Hanna Sign Co., LLC and the two suggested that a campaign be setup for citizens to donate funds for the phasing in of new physical and printed seals. Parker requested that the subject be added to a future workshop agenda. (As noted by Council Clerk Jennifer Berry in an

email, the official imprinted seal does contain the year 1788.) Avtex odors

Town Manager Steven M. Burke said he had received complaints about odors coming from the former Avtex Fibers plant and that they were caused by a mushroom compost that had been placed on sulphur basins. The compost consists of mushroom roots and manure. When the wind shifts, residents

of Cherrydale or Royal Village “experience the odors but Burke expects the problem to lessen over the next few weeks as the compost dissipates into the soil.

completed, the water will still meet all safety regulations.

Water Treatment Plant Improvements

The town will be doing some road work on John Marshall Highway over the next few weeks. Burke asked citizens to look out for construction signage and abide by direction from signs and flaggers.

The town has applied for a two-year extension on costly upgrades to the town’s water treatment facility. Burke says that as the required upgrades are

Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission The NSVRC’s Martha Shickle said the commission is looking at three properties, including one in town for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program which provides funding for acquisition, rehabilitation and disposition of foreclosed or abandoned residential properties in high foreclosure areas. She expects to have cost estimates soon. The Water Supply Plan for the Northern Shenandoah Valley was re-

viewed by the Department of Environmental Quality and has been deemed provisionally compliant. VDOT is seeking input about improvements to existing Park & Ride locations and any requests for new ones. Mayor Tim Darr asked if VDOT could restripe the lot soon since it was recently tarred and chipped and a lot of parking space is being wasted because commuters don’t know where to park. Darr also said that speed was a concern as people pull into the lot too fast and cars have hit other cars and people walking in the lot to board vans and busses. Shickle said she would discuss the matter with VDOT and local law enforcement and suggested that signage could help.

Royal, Christian Failmezger (left) bequeathed management of the business, now Vino124, to his wife, Rachel, Sept.6, quitting for what he called “a day job. He cited health reasons. An expert in wines, Failmezger hopes to make a new career in wine promotion and sales. He paid tribute to his wife, to the staff, and to the Humane Society’s “Yappy Hour crowd, for taking Vino124 from a small wine and cheese retail outlet to a popular, full service, specialty restaurant. Imagination Illustrated: The Jim Henson Journal By Karen Falk and Lisa Henson The Front Royal Women’s Resource Center and Royal Oak Bookshop donate books to Samuels Public Library that are by or about women. This book is a recent donation and is available for checkout. It would not be the least bit surprising to realize that Jim Henson’s

name is probably known all over the world. The beauty, joy, and love he and his creations have brought to young and old alike leave one breathless. The artistry Henson demonstrated was consumed with compassion and enabled viewers to enter a sphere that was replete with imagery which is still being realized long after his untimely

When Sesame Street premiered in 1969, Henson was heralded as an ‘artist extraordinaire’. This creation was applauded by parents, teachers and, most of all, children and was considered a spectacular achievement, to say the least. It has not only entertained children worldwide, but has provided educational perks that have been beyond description, particularly for the disadvantaged. Big Bird, who made the cover of Time magazine at the start of season two, is still thrilling audiences whenever he makes an appearance. The Muppet Show also became a rousing success. When one considers the films, books and television appearances these characters have brought forth, in addition to hob-knobbing with celebrities from all facets of the en-

Engle’s Angle: Cutting Grass? Not Bad.

by Kevin S. Engle I like cutting grass. What I don’t like is getting ready to cut grass. Anymore, it takes me just as long. When I was a kid and it was time to mow the lawn, I’d go outside and mow the lawn. That was it. Not now. It’s not that simple anymore. Now, I have to prepare to cut the

grass before I actually cut the grass. Here’s my 10 step pre-grass cutting routine. Step 1. Put on watch. Not knowing the time is bad. Taking too long to cut the grass, and hence, getting off schedule, is very bad. Step 2. Put on sunscreen. The sun is bad. You must protect your skin from the sun. Confession ‌ I don’t

always do that. My wife and my dermatologist tell me that’s bad. Step 3. Put on mask. One of those stupid looking white masks that fits over your nose and mouth and makes it hard to breathe. The ones I used to make fun of when I saw people wearing them. Grass and pollen are bad. Inhaling them is very bad. Step 4. Put on goggles. Flying objects moving at a high rate of speed are bad. You must protect your eyes from such things. Things like rocks, sticks and acorns. Step 5. Put on hat. The sun is bad. You must protect your bald head from the sun. Step 6. Put bug spray all over your body, making certain not to get it in your eyes. Getting bug spray in your eyes is bad. Step 7. Put on bug net. Annoying gnats that swarm around your face, get in your ears and fly up your nose are extremely bad. You must do anything humanly possible to keep that from happening. Step 8. Grab some water. Summer heat and humidity are bad. You must not dehydrate. You must drink liquids. You must not pass out while operating machinery. Doing so is bad. Step 9 – Move 25 things to get the lawn tractor out of the garage. That’s annoying, and annoying is bad. Step 10. Put gas in tank. Running out of gas is bad. Not having enough gas to mow the entire lawn is very bad. Needing to go to the gas station immediately before mowing is bad. Needing to go to the gas station while mowing is criminal. Talk about getting behind schedule.

Ok, I started two hours ago and now it’s lunch time. I’m hungry.

Cutting the grass while hungry is bad.

Grandpa told me that I should be careful not to break it because someday I won’t be able to buy a bat like his. What does he mean? Hector Dear Hector,

Ask Stewart

I’ll bet your grandfather’s bat was made from an ash tree. When he was young, most bats were ash wood. Major league and other baseball players have long used ash bats. Your grandfather’s advice is likely due to ash trees dying because they are attacked by a small, bright metallic green, flying insect, native to eastern Russia and Asia, called the Emerald

Pets Page

Ash Borer -- EAB. The adult borer attacks by laying eggs on bark of trees. When the eggs hatch, borers -- then called larvae -- bore through and under the bark and feed on the tree’s water and nutrients. If enough EABs attack a tree, it slowly dies because the borers tunnel and eat so much that the tree can’t get enough food for itself. When that happens, you eventually see which trees are infected as their top most branches become bare of leaves. Scientists say EABs are the most destructive pest this country has ever seen. Though scientists have ways of spraying or injecting infected trees with chemicals to lengthen life, but once trees are infected, saving them from slowly dying is at best very difficult. This EAB problem has been spreading across the United States and Can-

ada since 2002, and the EABs are here in Virginia. You may have seen them or their effects. Does your family have ash trees in your yard? If so, your parents may want to hire a certified arborist to examine your trees and determine if they are infected. An arborist can advise if the trees can be saved, their destruction can be slowed, or if it best to removed them. Someday, we may not have enough ash trees for making baseball bats if we can’t find a way to stop the ash borers. I hope that you will study to become a scientist to help us find ways to stop destructive insects like the EAB. So, Hector, care for your grandfather’s bat. As he says, someday you may not be able to buy a bat like his. Your buddy always,

- Stewart

The Front Royal/Warren County Tree Steward program began in 1997 with volunteers dedicated to improving the health of trees by providing educational programs, tree planting and care demonstrations, and tree maintenance throughout the community. The group now consists of over 30 active members with several interns working toward becoming certified tree stewards from our annual “All About Trees Class”. Each month Stewart will answer a question from our readers. Please forward it to “Stewart” in care of: frwctreestewards@comcast.net and we may publish it in a future issue.
