Discovering Warren County: The 9th Annual Brew & Blues Festival

By Ken Thurman Warren/Frederick County Report Front Royal continues to be the place to go for festivals of all kinds. September 23rd marked the 9th annual Brew & Blues Festival put on by the Front Royal – Warren County Chamber of Commerce. A fantastic weather day only added to the fun from 12 noon until 7 p.m. on Saturday and VIP ticket holders even started sampling at 11a.m. Music filled the air all day with live bands like Hypnotic Willie and Bugsy Kline & the Blue Devils. Of course, there was food of all varieties, face painting, vendors’ booths for shopping, and a general summer picnic type atmosphere. A great time for the whole family, whether partaking of the many beverages or foods or just relaxing under a tree and listening to music. Among the many booths I discovered was one of the Front Royal Fire fast pitch softball teams. of Warren with an experience that fosters positive self-esteem, team spirit (and they showed me plenty) and individual growth through personal achievement and as a team member. Front Royal Fire is committed to the development of athletic capability and sportsmanship by focusing on teaching the fundamentals of softball in an environment that supports all skill levels. The program offers our girls the ability to travel and experience competitiveness while having fun doing it. I spoke with Rob Morris, manager of the team, which has girls 16 and under. He told me that the group has seven teams ranging from 10 to 18 years old. Rob is also the manager of the local Walmart. You can find out more about them by emailing frontroyalfire@yahoo. com. What’s a Brew & Blues Festival without the brews? And were there a mountain of different brews to check out and enjoy from 29 different breweries featuring over 50 varieties of beers and my favorite hard cider. I just love the colorful names of the breweries like our local Backroom Brewery, and others like Chaos Mountain, the Devils Backbone, Beer Hound, Apocalypse, Ely-

sian, Bold Rock, Smartmouth, Sweetwater, Troegs, Mad Fox, Pale Fire, and more. The Brew and Blues Festival is the second largest fund-raising event for the Chamber which also hosts the annual Wine & Craft Festival each May. The chamber is a community based organization whose purpose is to support local businesses and citizens by working to make Front Royal/Warren County a better place to work, visit, shop, live, and raise a family. Most chambers are funded by their local government; however, the Front Royal/Warren County Chamber is self-funded to make decisions for the

betterment of the community without being influenced by a government agency or political group. The success of these fund-raising events directly relates to the support the Chamber can give to the community. Events like this can only succeed with a dedicated group of volunteers and sponsors that give of themselves to create and execute a successful event. Event sponsors this year included Virginia Eagle and Aire Serv Heating & Cooling plus numerous gate, glasses, T-Shirt, and individual beer sponsors (a huge list). Next up for the Chamber is the “Golftoberfest” on October 13 at the

County passes dog tethering ordinance County Administrator says common sense and wording would allow flexibility when enforcing the ordinance

Front Royal Mayor Hollis Tharpe and Carol Vorous celebrate the passage of the dog tethering ordinance vote taken at the September 19 Warren County Board of Supervisors meeting.

By Timothy Ratigan Warren/Frederick County Report During the first reading at their September 19 meeting, Warren County Board of Supervisors heard from 14 county residents regarding a proposed county-wide dog tethering ordinance. The Front Royal Town Council was

approached first on the idea of establishing a dog tethering ordinance, but the town postponed action on it, allowing the county to adopt the ordinance first. This way the town ordinance could mirror the county’s, making enforcement in both town and county fair. Carol Vorous, a longtime advocate

for the safety and health of dogs in Warren County, was one of the first to rise to speak in defense of the dog tethering ordinance. She began by stating that she has been operating a community outreach program for dogs in Warren County for the last four years. “During that time, it has put me in a unique position. I have been out in the town and county. I get referrals from citizens that say, ‘this person and/or that person needs a dog house for their dog, or they need a kennel for their dog because the dog is on a chain.’ At that time, I would visit the house and ask if there is anything that I can to do help them with their dogs. These dogs are supposed to be family pets and not working dogs. I understand that there should be something in place for working dogs. I try to keep the pictures of these dogs in front of me because I don’t ever want to forget what I am working for because this is my passion and no dog should have to live like this,” she said. Vorous referred to a poster of pictures she had brought before the board that had 17 examples of different dogs in different stages of confinement. All of them were tethered to a tree or were in a small confined kennel. The dogs

who had dog houses, had houses that were in different stages of disrepair. One dog was standing out in the open with its tether all tangled up with a ladder. Another dog had dug a hole in the ground in what appeared to be an attempt to get out of the elements. “It is not acceptable, it’s not reasonable and it is not adequate. During the last four years I have met with the Sheriff ’s Department, animal control and the humane society. I’ve met with the town council and this board and

countless other people. I have also been met with a lot of comments and a lot of negativity and that is fine, everyone has an opinion. I’ve been told to stick with the feel-good stuff. People don’t want to see all of this,” she continued, and referred again to the poster of pictures. “They want to see me giving dog houses and kennels to people and they don’t want to see the ugly side of this. EDITOR: This is a letter that came from a patient at St. Luke Community Clinic letting us know we made a difference in her life. St. Luke is so blessed to have been able to help this person, we wanted to share her story with you! Dear St. Luke, I turn 57 this month. My husband and I worked from our teen years in various jobs and careers. Approximately 4 1/2 years ago, my husband was laid off from his job. I was not working due to back problems and other medical issues. After diligently paying our taxes all of life we found out that the only help we could receive was some money for food and birth control. I laugh about the birth control since I an many years past my child bearing age. We are a family of three, and have a daughter. Needless to say, we were in quite a bind. We lost our home and more. My husband and I had never asked for help before and we had never enrolled in any programs before. So, there were the feelings of failure, fear, helplessness, and shame, for even asking for help. We had always been able to take care of our needs. My medical needs are many because I have Diabetes, a hypothyroid, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. I was at the point where I could not afford my insulin let along any other medicines or care. I ended up at the doorstep of St. Luke Community Clinic. After being treated at St. Luke, my faith in humanity and the medical community was restored. Let me explain: NOT ONCE did anyone at the clinic make me feel ashamed, embarrassed, or worthless while caring for me. They took care of all my medical care. They got me on an insulin program, they were able to get my medications, answered all my questions, they took care of my every need. During the time I was seeing them, I had a tooth abscess and they placed me in the dental program and that infected tooth was pulled. What I am trying to tell you is, they literally saved my life. Many times I walked out of the clinic with insulin and medication in my hands, sat in the care, and cried because of the caring and gen-

erosity. I was at a breaking point and the kindness they showed me and help they gave me would help me breathe and tell myself that everything would be fine again one day. They were a shining light for me during one of the hardest times in my life. Without a doubt, I am alive today because of their service. All the staff go beyond just standard medical care. They actually CARE about the patients as a whole. I was not a number to them I was a human being that mattered. That is something that not only I appreciate, but my husband and daughter appreciate too. Without the staff at St. Luke, I am 100% certain I would not be here today to write this letter to you. My current situation is that my husband was hired to a well paying job. I am one of the few who no longer qualify for medical care at the clinic. This was bittersweet. While it was a blessing that my husband finally found a job, and have health insurance, I was saddened by the fact I would no longer have the wonderful staff to monitor and help me with my medical needs.

Through peaceful resistance and the example of our solidarity across differences of race, class, sexual orientation, culture, and other categories, we show what kind of town we are--one whose

diversity makes it strong. Thanks, Heather Davis Front Royal, VA

KKK Flyers at Park & Ride EDITOR: Yesterday, I returned to my car in the park and ride lot in Front Royal to find a flier inviting me to join the Klu Klux Klan. It was quite a shock and an ugly reminder of the thousands of black Americans they lynched over the past almost 100 years. I hope everyone understands why the KKK has no place in our town, knows about their long history of violence targeting primarily black Americans, but also Jews, immigrants, gays and lesbians and, until recently, Catholics. They are the definition of a radical hate group. What I found particularly disturbing was the language they used on their flier. It sounded a lot like the language a religious cult or a street gang would use, offering solidarity and saying "You will not be alone anymore." It also vilifies the Black Lives Matter movement, which is a non-violent social justice movement. It is telling that the flier also claims the KKK can keep members' identities secret. If they are not a hate group, as they claim, why do they need to hide? They most certainly are not a Christian organization. That they are trying to appeal to members of our community who may be isolated, resentful, and weak is appalling and cowardly. Front Royal, as a community, must come together to fight back against any infiltration by the KKK.

The 3,200-acre Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Front Royal, Va.—which is the headquarters for the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s conservation science initiatives and is normally closed to the public—will open its gates Saturday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Conservation Discovery Day. Budding biologists, curious conservationists and animal lovers can visit the one-of-a-kind research facility for a day packed with activities, demonstrations and talks from SCBI scientists working around the world. Visitors will need to purchase a car pass to attend the event. Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center scientists will do live birdbanding demonstrations, allowing guests to see wild birds up close while learning how scientists attach bands and the types of information they can collect from banded-birds. Guests can tour SCBI’s veterinary hospital to learn how veterinarians care for more than 20 species. Ecologists will give guests a taste of what field work is like on an excursion to set up camera traps. During mock DNA extractions and tests, guests will learn how much information a DNA sample can reveal about rare and endangered animals. In addition to activities, guests can also play

trivia games and hear from scientists and animal experts about their research. A full list of activities is available on the Zoo’s website. Conservation Discovery Day will be held rain or shine. SCBI is a large and hilly campus. Appropriate attire for outdoor activities and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Passes for Conservation Discovery Day are available to purchase via the Zoo’s website based on vehicle size. A standard car pass is $30, a small school bus/van pass is $50 and a school bus or chartered bus pass is $100. Car passes can be bought in advance or at the gate until passes are sold out. SCBI plays a leading role in the Smithsonian’s global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists. SCBI spearheads research programs at its headquarters in Front Royal, Va., the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and at field research stations and training sites worldwide. SCBI scientists tackle some of today’s most complex conservation challenges by applying and sharing what they learn about animal behavior and reproduction, ecology, genetics, migration and conservation sustainability.

DOGS, from 6 bring it to their attention they don’t have to look at it and they don’t have to know it is there. These dogs are all over the town and county. These are local dogs. These pictures represent just a small handful and when I look at them it makes me ashamed that we live in this county and that we allow this to happen,” she said. Vorous then talked about specific dogs. “See the dog at the top of the display. When I went to go see him he was tied to a tree with no dog house and he had dug holes about two feet deep because when you have dogs that are tethered for 24 hours a day 7 days a week, they are isolated. Dogs by their nature are pack animals and we are part of their pack. When you isolate them, and separate them from the pack they become anxious and bored and they become very aggressive and territorial. With them being out in the weather it is important to remember that they suffer from the ailments that

people do. They get frostbite and they develop heat exhaustion and they develop arthritis,” she said. She pointed to one picture of a dog house that was literally falling down. “This dog house, the one that is falling down, that is a dog’s shelter. That is considered by the state to be adequate shelter. A camper shell is also considered adequate shelter. Animal control visited both of these places and in their opinion, that is adequate shelter,” she added. She also told the sad story of a female dog who was not spayed and chained to a stake that became pregnant time and time again with no protection from the male dogs. Other speakers also spoke during the public hearing. This included Alberto Medina who was concerned about the time and temperature restrictions that outdoor tethering would put on him and his dog. He has a Husky that thrives in very cold weather and would rather be out

in the cold than confined inside in the warmer conditions. He noted that his dog was specifically bred to work and live and play in the arctic climates and even preferred to stay outside for extended periods of time and temperatures well beyond the guidelines that the proposed ordinance called for. Another speaker, Melody Thornburg, rose to speak about guardian dogs, or work dogs as they are sometimes called, who are bred and trained from very young to attend flocks of sheep and goats and are herd dogs. She said the dog has to remain tethered with the flock at all times of the day and night in order to form a bond with the flock he or she is responsible for. Her primary concern was how this new ordinance, if passed, would affect the guardian dogs. At a later point in the public hearing Chairwoman Linda Glavis asked for a show of hands to see how many people in the audience were there to support the dog tethering ordinance. The clear majority, including Front Royal’s Mayor Hollis Tharpe, raised their hands in support of the ordinance During the discussion part of the meeting, Warren County Administrator Douglas Stanley pointed out that common sense, used in conjunction with the new guidelines, should and could be applied to the enforcement and should help address Medina’s concerns. He also stressed that the proposal’s wording could allow the necessary flexibility to accommodate working/guardian dogs as described by Thornburg.

Alberto Medina raises concerns about how the restrictions on dog tethering would affect his Husky who prefers the colder weather.

At the end of the discussion period a vote was called and passed on a 5-0 vote. The ordinance will now be vetted

by the Front Royal Town Council and they will hold their own public hearing on the matter. – tim@areaguides.com

Council members hear about deplorable renters’ conditions

From left, council members Jacob Meza and Christopher Morrison react to descriptions of Front Royal renters’ living conditions.

Front Royal resident Linda Allen spoke during the public hearing on the rental inspection office.

By Timothy Ratigan Warren/Frederick County Report At their September 25 meeting, the Front Royal Town Council held two public hearings. One was a first reading to amend an ordinance pertaining to flea markets. The second hearing concerned the town’s rental inspection and property maintenance code, but was tabled after the public hearing. The council heard from one citizen after another about the rental inspection and property maintenance issue, especially about the owner of the Mount Vernon apartment building on South Royal Avenue. There were stories of bed bug and roach infestations, leaking roofs and faulty electrical outlets. But probably most troubling were tales of exploita-

tion from the owner’s refusal to do any repairs to the building unless the tenant paid the first $100 towards the repairs. One resident stated that when she found another apartment to move to she had to leave or discard most of her belongings because of the bedbug and roach infestation. She also expressed fear of the consequences of basically breaking her lease, but felt she had no choice. She stated that it was either that or risk more damage to her health and wellbeing. At the end of the public hearing, the council decided to table the measure in order to plan for a future public hearing after they could do more work on the ordinance to ensure that it could and would be enforced. The other public hearing was a first

reading held to discuss amending the ordinance pertaining to flea markets. The council was requested to affirm on its first reading to amend the town code to allow flea markets to operate on Fridays with a special use permit and to potentially include a farmers’ market. The town council voted to change the license tax for flea markets from a per-vendor tax of $10 per year, or $1 per day, to a flat license tax of $500 per calendar year to be paid by the proprietor of the flea market. Council had referred the request of the flea market to operate on Fridays to the planning commission for further consideration and a recommendation on March 27 this year. A public hearing was scheduled for the July 24 meeting, but was postponed for staff to re-advertise the Friday openings and the change in license fees amendments together. Another public hearing was sched-

uled for August 14, but died due to a lack of second because of licensing fees being advertised at $250 instead

of $500. Staff re-advertised for the higher fee. Once the public hearing was opened at the September 25 meeting, town resident Gerald Stone rose to speak. Stone introduced himself, not only as a resident of Front Royal, but also as a veteran. “When you go to the flea market on Saturday and Sunday you see what is right about Front Royal. It just isn’t about a flea market. It’s also about fellowship, it’s also about team work and respect and dignity and it is also about people helping people. Those are all the things that the flea market stands for. When I first started going to the flea market I met Linda Andricks. By the way, she has owned the flea market for 30 years. She came to me as a person of integrity. There are so many times you go the flea market and you don’t see all the good that she does and it doesn’t get noticed. If people need help, a lot of times she will waive the

table fee so they can make money so they can get by. The flea market helps so many people and it brings so much to the community that adding a day is not going to affect any other business. In fact, the people who come to the flea market sometimes will spend their money at the local restaurants and gas stations. I even do my shopping at the

area stores after I am done at the flea market,” Stone said. Stone also pointed out that many people depend on the flea market for a major part of their livelihood such as the elderly, disabled and retired. He stressed that adding a day can do nothing but help their situation. “It is just a no-brainer that passing

this is the right thing for Front Royal. This flea market stands for everything that I believed in when I fought for this country. There is a reason I travel back and forth a hundred miles a day. That flea market stands for Front Royal, I stand for Front Royal and I think we should all stand together for Front Royal and pass this measure and do the right thing for Front Royal,” he added. The next speaker was Anne Orndorff, owner of Springtime Gardens nursery in Front Royal. “I promise that this will be the last time I will speak about this. We continue to have concerns that the flea market chooses to ignore the town code. Our concern about the overall appearance of the flea market has not changed. Currently there is a vendor set up on Fridays selling barbeque. The permit for Fridays hasn’t been approved. “However, for the entire summer a vendor has been there on Fridays without a permit. And we have just come to accept the fact that the rules

for the flea market are not going to be enforced and we just need to move on and we understand, and we get that. Again, this is not a vendetta against the flea market. It’s been a tradition here. We have nothing against the comradery or the fellowship at the flea market; it’s just that businesses need to follow the rules. “And something we can’t let go of

is the fact that they have not paid the revenue to the town for six years. And the revenue could’ve represented a pay increase for a police officer or first responder. For the flea market to claim ignorance and ask for forgiveness should not apply in this case. All business owners are sent an application for renewal of your business license in January and on the back of the form it tells you what you are required to pay and what your fees are going to be in order for you to operate a business. We just don’t feel like the flea market should get a free pass on this,” she said. During the special use permit discussion period, Vice Mayor Eugene Tewalt spoke in favor of the flea market. “Number one, it’s been there for so many years. Then again, I expect the town or the zoning department to enforce the rules. I’ve seen people there on Fridays as well, that were selling their products. I don’t know whether or not this was taken care of. I want to make sure that if I vote for this, whatever the conditions are, that the conditions are enforced and under those conditions I will vote in favor of this,” said Tewalt. Councilman John Connolly addressed the council and said he had gone down to the flea market a couple of weeks ago and had walked the tables and spoke to the vendors. “There are a lot of senior citizens who are retired. There are lot of people down there selling just for the enjoyment of it. And there are a lot of people who are down there selling to allow them to help make ends meet,” he said, adding, “I am still of the belief that the flat license fee should be $250 instead of $500.” At the end of the discussion period the measure passed on a 6-0 vote. – tim@areaguides.com

Lil Cool Fly’n Fun (#4) beat Welcometotheparty (#2) to win the $43,600 Virginia Breeder’s 3 Year Old Colt & Gelding Pace Sunday, Sept. 24 at Shenandoah Downs. Photo by Dee Leftwich. Great finishes highlight Virginia Breeder’s three-year-old championship races at Shenandoah Downs Fans that stayed for a trio of Virginia Breeder’s Three Year Old Championship races were rewarded with thrilling finishes Sunday at Shenandoah Downs. The second weekend of racing in Woodstock wrapped up with ten pari-mutuel races followed by three non-betting Breeder’s events on another clear and picturesque day

in the Shenandoah Valley. Sunday’s $44,000 Filly Pace saw The Third Day and Camystery battle side by side through the stretch and at the wire, The Third Day was best by a head. The Third Straight filly set early fractions of :29 2/5, 1:01.0 and 1:30 4/5 before tackling her main challenger, who sat a patient second throughout the four horse race. Driver/trainer James Stiltner II directed his charge to a 2:00 3/5 finish for owner Herman Hagerman of North Tazewell, Virginia. The victor, out of Klondike Lady by Cambest, was the most experienced of any with 15 starts heading into the Breeder’s finale. Camystery, who won a conditioned race in 1:59.0 opening weekend, was the runnerup. Gone South finished third and Ellie’sbelleringer was fourth. Yagot A Winner gained revenge on his stablemate Dusty Fool in the $41,200 Colt & Gelding Trot. In this rematch of trainer Carlo Pliseno’s pair, Yagot A Winner trotted patiently behind front stepping Dusty Fool through three fractions, came out in mid stretch and edged the early leader by a head in 2:07 3/5. The

duo, both owned by Jane Dunavant of Kenbridge, Virginia, were the sole competitors last year when Dusty Fool took freshman championship honors. They were the only two to compete as sophomores Sunday as well. Heading into the showdown, Yagot A Winner had earned $60,867 while Dusty Fool collected $49,425. looked tough early on. The Dream Away gelding had won five straight Fair races in addition to a conditioned race in 1:56 2/5 opening weekend. Trainer Jimmy Viars’ pacer led through three fractions, tripping the timer respectively in :27 4/5, :57 3/5 and 1:28 2/5. help you learn about our local birds, how to begin to identify them, and how to enjoy all that they add to our lives. Saturday, October 7, local birding enthusiast and long-time contributor to Park programs, Charles Price, will share information about how to enjoy birding in your yard or anywhere in our great outdoors. The program will begin at the Park Visitors Center with a short presentation about birds and what you might find helpful to get to know them. Charles will use the Parks extensive bird exhibits to point out attributes and clues. We then plan a wagon ride to one of the Park trails, talking about what we see, or hope to see, especially the birds (and other wild residents) that use our river. We will then enjoy a short walk to try to see some our more elusive fliers. We will meet at 10AM and plan to conclude by noon. Bring a lunch to enjoy afterward and spend the afternoon exploring our great Park. This program is for all ages. BRIEFS, from 17 through vaccinations, but is fatal to both animals and humans if left untreated. Exposure to rabies is considered any time there is a bite or scratch, or other circumstance where saliva or central nervous system tissue from a rabid or potentially rabid animal enters an open, fresh wound or comes in contact with a mucous membrane by entering the eye, mouth, or nose. Any exposed/potentially exposed individuals should seek medical advice immediately to evaluate whether rabies prevention medication is needed. The Lord Fairfax Health District would like to speak with any residents who believe that they, their family, or their pets may have come into contact with this cat from the dates of Sept. 5, 2017 through Sept. 14, 2017. Please call 540-722-3480. In addition, if any residents within the area noticed any of their animals return home with wounds from unknown injury, they are urged to consult with their veterinarian. “Incidents like this reinforce the need for all dogs, cats, and ferrets to be current in their vaccinations against the rabies virus,” advises Lord Fairfax Health District Manager, Mason Allen. “State law requires all dogs and cats over the age of four months to be vaccinated against rabies.” The Health Department strongly advises that people take the following steps to prevent families and pets from being exposed to rabies: Vaccinate all cats, dogs and ferrets against rabies and keep them up to date! Avoid contact with wild animals or stray cats and dogs. Do not feed wild animals or stray cats and dogs. Report stray animals to your local animal control agency. Eliminate outdoor food sources around the home.

Keep pets confined to your property or walk them on a leash. For more information, contact the Lord Fairfax Health District’s Frederick/Winchester Health Department at 540-722-3480. Warren County 2019 General Reassessment: Property Reassessment In Perspective A General Reassessment of prop-

tion and/or collect additional information, as needed. These individuals carry Warren County identification badges and have magnetic signs on their automobiles that bear the words “Real Estate Assessment.” The Warren

County Sheriff ’s Office will have a list of Reassessment vehicles that will be making property visits. In collecting sales information, Wingate’s staff considers location, construction cost, quality of con-

struction, condition of the buildings, etc., in order for the sales data to be compared, for assessment purposes, with the various properties in different neighborhoods throughout the County.

Sales which are higher or lower than typical sales are not considered in the assessments. These would include short sales, family transactions, and sales resulting from foreclosure. Transactions which involve duress on the part of the seller or buyer can represent atypical value and are not given consideration. Also excluded are sales which do not allow for the property to be adequately exposed to the open market, resulting in a sale which can be less than market value. It is also possible that an adjoining owner may pay more than market value in order to protect his existing property and/or control how the property will be used or assembled. As properties are assessed, factors such as location, including access to highways, shopping, schools, availability of utilities, etc., as well as condition and type of buildings are being considered.

Prior to becoming effective, all property owners will be mailed a notice of the new proposed assessed values and will have an opportunity to discuss or appeal their assessment. As the work progresses, additional news releases will be made. The Park rangers were dispatched under the Emergency Mutual Assistance Compact, the nation’s interstate agreement allowing states to provide aid in times of crisis. “We are honored to offer assistance to another state park system in this time of challenge and crisis,” said Virginia State Parks Director Craig Seaver. “These dedicated women and men represent the ‘Ranger First’ philosophy that makes our state park and natural heritage system outstanding. They have volunteered to give their skills and efforts to help others. They represent the best of the Commonwealth’s state parks and the communities that we serve.”

The team members came from parks across the Commonwealth, rallying at New River State Park near Max Meadows, VA, before heading south. The first team rolled out of Virginia on Sep. 15 and returned Sept. 22. The crew worked in Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in Fort Lauderdale and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne, home of the Cape Florida Light, Miami’s oldest standing structure. That team cleared and chipped downed trees and used their equipment to remove large loads of debris. In a single day, they filled the dump truck 10 times and removed more than 120 trees. Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. The first team included Sam Jenson – Chief Ranger, Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville. The second crew left Virginia Sept. 22 and will continue work at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park before returning home on Sept. 29.

Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. It shook out their hearts, the yellow leaves, scattered them over the ground.

PREMIER Anyone could trample them out of shape undisturbed by a single moan of protest. The birds that herald dreams were exiled from their song, each voice torn out of its throat. They dropped into the dust even before the hunter strung his bow. Oh, God of May have mercy. Bless these withered bodies with the passion of your resurrection; make their dead veins flow with blood again. Give some tree the gift of green again. Let one bird sing. Your friend in the trees,

Engle’s Angle: “Something I Can Depend On” By Kevin S. Engle In my world, I like things a certain way. My way. Croutons go on the salad AFTER the dressing. They don’t get soggy that way. And I prefer my salad BEFORE the entrée. Shopping without my wife. I grab and go. She looks and lingers. Underwear? White. It’s all I’ve ever known. That’s what my mother got me when I was a kid. When I got married, my wife would buy them for me at Christmas, mostly as a joke. Even when I didn’t need them. And I didn’t. There were unopened packs from last year still in the closet. I finally had to put my food down. “No more underwear!” Sure, my inventory level was high, although I’ll admit many of them weren’t in the best shape. Torn waistbands and extra holes here and there. They were far from perfect, but they did their job well enough. Unfortunately, it got to the point where the waistband would tear every time I put them on. It was annoying. They were in sad shape, something my wife had been telling me for quite a while. When I finally ‘culled the herd’, guess what? I needed more. And so, last year, I lifted the embargo. At Christmas, my wife did not disappoint. Well, actually, she did. She got me two packs. A pack of white underwear, briefs of course, and a pack of assorted colors. Light blue, dark blue and gray. Was I supposed to wear them? They looked like swim trunks. I resisted. She insisted. “You gotta try new things.” Really? Eventually I gave in. And just as I’d feared, my world was turned upside down. When I put them on for the first time, something just wasn’t right. They did what they were supposed to, but I felt different. I had crossed a line. And now, whenever I open my dresser drawer and see blue is next in the rotation, I’m not happy. It’s not going to be a good day. It’s true. When I wear blue underwear, I don’t have a good day. Coincidence? I don’t think so. If I shut my eyes when I got out of the shower and my wife dressed me, could I actually tell what color underwear I was wearing? I could. By the type of day I had. Good days, white underwear. Not so good days, blue. So now what? What if I bleached them? Hmm. It’s worth a shot. My wife will think I’ve lost it, but that’s a small price to pay to restore the balance of nature. To put things back the way they were meant to be. The way I like them. There’s not a lot you can count on these days, but I know I can depend on white underwear. And speaking of Depends®, … The author doesn’t even want to think about that.

host Ben Glen for a special lecture series on the art and life of the renowned Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer on Tuesday, October 24th at 6:30pm. The exquisite paintings of 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) are nothing short of an international sensation. Despite their realism, however, Vermeer’s images of people and daily life elude our understanding. Using extraordinary closeups impossible to experience in a museum setting, art historian Ben Glenn II examines Vermeer’s subjects and working methods within the historical context of the glorious Dutch “Golden Age.” Martin Luther & the Reformation: A 500th Anniversary: Samuels Public library invites you to come out and join us Thursday, October 26th at 6:30pm where Dr. Rev. James Utt will give a lecture on the history of the Reformation. In October 1517, Mar-

tin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenburg Castle Church and, in doing so, ignited the fires of a religious revolt, known as The Reformation, against Catholic Rome that swept through large swaths of Europe with fervor and, at times, violence and destruction. During the first hour of this program, historian and author Rev. Dr. James Utt, will present an overview of The Reformation on this, its 500th anniversary. Afterward, art historian Ben Glenn II will examine the art of The Reformation period and the effects of iconoclasm on the artistic legacy of late-medieval Europe.
