61st Annual

2018 SCHEDULE

The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) welcomed a litter of seven chirping cheetah cubs July 9. The cubs were born to first-time mother, Erin. She has been attentive and immediately started caring for the cubs after they were born. The cubs appear to be healthy and doing well. Keepers will perform a health check on the cubs when Erin is comfortable leaving them for an extended period of time. In the meantime, the keepers will continue to monitor the mother and cubs closely through den cameras and visual checks to ensure they are growing and developing normally. “It is really exciting to have such a large and healthy litter of cubs, especially from first-time parents,” said Adrienne Crosier, cheetah biologist. “Two of these cubs’ grandparents also live at SCBI, so they are the third generation from some of the first cheetahs to ever live and breed here. That’s really good news for the cheetah population worldwide. A global self-sustaining cheetah population in human care is becoming even more important with the continued decrease of animal numbers in the wild.” The cubs are important to the population of cheetahs living in zoos because Erin’s genes are not well represented in the population of cheetahs living in human care in North America. This is also the first litter of cubs sired by the cubs’ father, Rico. It is the 12th cheetah litter bringing the number of cubs born at SCBI since 2010 to 53. Erin’s cubs will likely move to other zoos or facilities accredited by the Association of Zoo and Aquariums (AZA) and join the AZA Cheetah Species Survival Plan. SCBI scientists are using a new fecal hormone test to determine pregnancy

mune system, in cheetah feces to determine if a female is pregnant in the first 30 days of her pregnancy. Cheetahs are listed as “vulnerable” in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There are only about 7,000 cheetahs in the wild living in very fragmented habitats. SCBI is building a healthy and genetically diverse population of cheetahs in human care using natural breeding and assisted reproduction techniques. SCBI plays a leading role in the Smithsonian’s global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists. SCBI spearheads research programs at its headquarters in Front Royal, Virginia, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and at field research stations and training sites worldwide. SCBI scientists tackle some of today’s most complex conservation challenges by applying and

Spirit of 60s Woodstock lives on in Brewstock music festival August 11 event hosted by Sunflower Cottage and Backroom Brewery

Backroom Brewery will sell a full selection of their award-winning craft beers during the concert.

The beers that will be served on the concert grounds are flavored using hops grown just a few hundred feet away.

By Ian Dyke Warren/Frederick County Report The spirit of the original Woodstock festival lives on through Front Royal’s own Brewstock music festival on August 11, hosted by Sunflower Cottage and Backroom Brewery. Located just two miles from the Wal-Mart shopping center, the herb farm and brew-

ery have brought together a host of cover and tribute bands to recreate the music performed at Woodstock, commemorating the iconic festival’s 49th anniversary. A giant beer tent will serve a full selection of Backroom Brewery’s awardwinning beers, as well as wines and hard ciders. Three food trucks will offer a variety of foods, including bar-

beque, wings and street tacos. In addition to the concert, festival goers will have the chance to see an impressive collection of antique “bugs” and “hippy vans” at the featured Volkswagen car show. Tickets for Brewstock are available at EventBrite.com for $35 and are accessible through Backroom Brewery’s Facebook page. Tickets are also available at the gates for $40. The familyfriendly, pet-friendly event welcomes children 12 and younger (and all pets) free of charge. The concert will last from 1 to 10 p.m. with gates opening as early as 10 a.m. While the concert will be held

August 11, Brewstock is also offering two-night camping passes for the nights of August 10 and 11 for those wanting a closer glimpse of what the original concert was like. Camping passes for four campers (including children) are available for $50 and permit one vehicle and one tent. Passes for each additional person are avail-

able for $10. The concert grounds have been approved for as many as 500 campsites by county authorities. Brewstock will more than earn its name by serving over 20 craft beers. Each beer is brewed on-site using hops and herbs grown at Sunflower Cottage herb farm. Each brew presents a distinct flavor – ranging from full and powerful dark beers to citrus and surprisingly sweet light beers. Many of the brewery’s beers have claimed awards at the Virginia Craft Beer Competition. The event’s management is also considering partnering with other Virginia breweries to provide an even more comprehensive list of drink options. To accompany the beers and other drinks, three local food trucks will cater concert-friendly foods to festival goers. The Apple House’s Fork’d food truck will serve pork barbeque, beef brisket, and multiple fried foods. Another food truck will offer a series of different wings. Finally, Sexi Mexi, an extension of Winchester’s Burrito Bar, will be selling street tacos made with a choice of meats as well as vegetarian and vegan options. Under the leadership of Ryan Benton, front man for The Voodoo Blues, the event’s team has curated an impressive line-up of cover and tribute bands. While a cover band will per-

form songs from another artist, a tribute band has dedicated themselves to honoring the work of a particular artist. Brewstock will feature songs honoring artists such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Sha Na Na, The Band, CCR, Joe Cocker and Santana as well as a recently announced addition of a Bob Dylan tribute band. Each of the bands is a semi-local Virginia band, coming from within a 100-mile radius. Benton said that Voodoo Blues is more than ready for a full set of Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band and Joe Cocker covers after their many years of playing New Orleans blues, funk and jazz music. “I have been able to schedule my friends, The King Street Kats, a great local rockabilly band, to cover Sha Na

Na, Jon Ingels to cover Bob Dylan, and Big Whiskey to cover Santana with whom I’ll also be playing keys,” Benton said. “By involving my friend Chris Murray who owns Sixela Entertainment booking agency, Billie, Chris and I were fortunate enough to find a full day’s line-up of great Woodstockera tributes.” Adding to the festival’s recreation is the 25-acres of recently cleared primitive farmland that will house the concert. The open meadow recalls Max Yasgur’s rustic dairy farm in Sullivan County, New York that was home to the original Woodstock concert. Billie Clifton, the farm and brewery’s owner and event organizer, said her team has been looking to repurpose their back fields for years. “We

are fortunate to have a lot of beautiful property here at Sunflower Cottage Herb Farm and Backroom Brewery,” Clifton said. “We have just not utilized our full acreage in the past and have been searching to do something that worked for us.” Customers and friends have often suggested Clifton extend the Brewery’s Friday night live music into a full music festival. When Clifton finally decided on a music festival, the idea to host a Woodstock-themed concert just seemed to fit, according to Clifton. “When we decided to do a huge music festival with camping, the light bulb just came on to do a Woodstockthemed concert,” she said. Clearing the land has been quite the job for the farm’s grounds crew. Removing the vineyard that previously occupied the 25-acre concert grounds has been a four-year job that is older than the concert itself. The farm’s former owner built his vine posts from solid concrete to ensure they would last. As workers finish their finishing touches, the space has become an almost idyllic concert site, surrounded by forest and textured with wildflowers and a small knoll. The venue manages to feel in-touch with natural surroundings while offering all the commodities of being two miles from Riverton Commons shopping center off 522. The farm is having a huge stage built with all the features of a professional concert, run by a professional stage crew. Stage lights will set a warm yet energetic atmosphere while a series of huge amplifiers ensures “everyone will hear every note,” according to Clifton. Clifton said she believes the music festival will become an annual event for the herb farm and brewery. With next year being Woodstock’s 50th anniversary, Clifton said another Woodstock-themed event is all but confirmed. She said after next year’s concert she would be open to going

are currently recruiting for other local vendors and organizations who would like to participate in the Harvest Festival that live within Clarke, Frederick, Page, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren counties. The 1st annual Harvest Festival is brought to you by the Strasburg Community Garden, Lord Fairfax Soil & Water Conservation District, Town of Strasburg, Sustainability Matters, and Restore Hope House.” One reason for having the festival in August, at the mid-harvest season, is that “October is always so full of harvest-related activities,” said Alison, explaining that since most harvest

Anyone looking for a great community event which promises to be a funfilled, free, family day in Strasburg for Saturday, August 18? If so, you are invited to the Harvest Festival to be held from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Strasburg’s town park located next to the dog park and playground at 295 Park Rd. This event is a result of the Strasburg area community working together to create the bountiful garden as a result of a grant application from the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conserva-

tion District (LFSWCD). “We think it will be a fun celebration,” said Alison Sloop of the LFSWCD. She and Nick Livesey, both employees at the organization, were instrumental in making the festival part of the project, and they hope to begin a tradition that will give back to the community every year. They are still searching for great local artisans, crafters, bakers, producers and small businesses to join in to celebrate Shenandoah Valley bounty. Their Facebook page invites festival-goers to “Peruse local artisan fares, edible goodies and produce at the Strasburg Farmer’s Market. We

celebrations come at the end of the summer, theirs will be a forerunner of that, giving people an event to enjoy this summer, as well as perfectly ripe produce. An element of their garden project is to give people more opportunity to “Eat local,” especially folks who are dependent on the food pantries that receive much of the vegetables from the garden. Generally, the food available at food pantries doesn’t include a lot of fresh fruit or vegetables. Visitors can also give back to the community by bringing a non-perishable food item to contribute to a food

drive by our friends at Restore Hope House. “According to workers at the Restore Hope Food Pantry, they say fresh produce is the first to go,” said Nick. Their goal is to donate 250 lbs. of produce this season, and they’ve already donated 100 lbs. so far, just from the mid-harvest season. Expect to find: food trucks; a Kids Zone; an educational coordinator who will be conducting workshops with master gardeners and the cooperative extension; folks from Strasburg Farmers’ Market on-site; and many other kinds of vendors at the festival. “The kids can have a blast in the Kids Zone with games like garden bingo, corn hole and much more,” said Alison. And to combat the summer heat, organizers plan to provide water activities like a slip n disk (like a water slide), and kids’ sprinkler in the garden. There will also be a Discovery Pavilion with educational and non-profit organizations to connect people with services – and to show folks how to volunteer and/or get involved. They can also meet local organizations and non-profits that serve the local community in the Discovery Zone. Background information on the community garden says that there are 18 public plots for local people, with no fee if they donate to the food pantries and added plots for education and local access. Organizations involved include: • VA Cooperative Extension,

The examples of different types of garden plots included: square foot; raised beds; companion planting; farm scaping; in ground; a pole bean trellis; and a cucumber trellis. “We had some work days with public volunteers filling raised beds with growing materials (mulch, etc.) and used wetland and a Bioswale. Bioswales are designed to remove silt and pollution from surface runoff water. They consist of a swaled drainage course with gently sloped sides and filled with vegetation, compost and/or riprap. “We also had a culvert draining water and used that after digging a trench to water the garden,” Nick explained. “This was to fill the water tanks. There’s no pressurized water source, so water is gravity-fed to the garden. Tomatoes are coming around now, and we go every other day to weed or check for what to harvest,” said Nick. Local artist will be represented on the Rappahannock Artisan Trail Jane Forth’s paintings will be featured in galleries at the Second Saturday event

for their Fall Art Tour ~ a two-day open studio/gallery event that is in its 14th year. Creative works include painting, sculpture, pottery, glass, ironwork, jewelry, textiles and photograph, and many of the artists are nationally and internationally recognized, with 100 artists participating within 42 studios and 8 galleries. Here is a list of special events that will be taking place at these spots on the August 11 tour.

This encaustic work is called Turning Leaves. This, along with other artists’ offerings is part of the Sperryville Artists Cooperative - Living Sky Foundation’s show in the Artisan Trail of Rappahannock.

Warren County artist Jane Forth’s Calypso I - Encaustic, is being exhibited at the Sperryville Artists Cooperative - Living Sky Foundation which is one stop on the Artisan Trail of Rappahannock on August 11. This piece was awarded first place in a recent national show at Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts.

By Carol Ballard Warren/Frederick County Report On the second Saturday of every month, the Artisan Trail of Rappahannock County features an overwhelming variety of places to visit. One Saturday won’t be enough to see or visit every place, so be prepared to make this a monthly habit. On August 11, there are again lots of choices. Warren County artist Jane Forth, who has paintings in two galleries on the tour has been with the Artisan Trail for five years and is a strong supporter of the event and its importance to the community. Recently, a visitor from Washington, D.C. told Jane that she makes it a habit to get out of the city once a month, to make the trek to Rappahannock County where there’s no cell phone service and life is so much slower. “We come to the area to relax,” she said. As a bonus, on these getaway trips, she and others can see and experience the many places to visit along the Trail. “It’s great for tourists to have interesting places to go and find new things to do, they can go from place to place,” said Jane. To look up places of interest, there is a map and more information online. The web address is included at the end of this article. When actively walking the Trail, there are little yellow flags that mark the open places, as well as maps to find them.

And organizers of the event say, “Experience summertime on the Rappahannock County Artist Trail. Come for art, workshops, galleries, wine education, meet a local writer, enjoy our restaurants and stay for the weekend at one of our fine B&B’s! There’s always something to discover, be inspired by and enjoy in the scenic countryside of Rappahannock County! Every Second Saturday our trail sites are featuring a diverse collection of special events.” And then there is a very long list of what is available on each particular Saturday, these are included for August 11 below. “They have dynamic people behind it. This is a group that really wanted to put this together and people pulled it together to create the Tour Day. I think it gives the idea that artists and businesses in Rappahannock really support this effort, both for community and tourism,” said Jane. She noted that the Second Saturday-every month tour was developed during the last year. “Getting it together was quite a launch,” she said. She values the fact that, as an artist, she can list her works on the website and has two places to put her work which gives it more exposure. She has one of her paintings in the Middle Street Gallery in Little Washington right now and one in the Sperryville Artists Cooperative, which is part of the Living Sky Foundation studio/classroom/gallery. She describes the Living Sky Foundation as a place for the community to host events

which are open to the public and added that the artists of the Sperryville Artists Cooperative created the space. Jane uses beeswax, one of the oldest painting mediums, to create the works called encaustics. Pigmented beeswax and resin(damar)is the medium that must be heated for application. She says she uses brushing, pouring and carving while fusing successive glazes of wax. “There are cold wax techniques, but I use heated wax,” she said. For the October’s Artisan Trail Second Saturday, Jane will to be actively demonstrating how encaustic monotypes are created at the Sperryville Artists Cooperative - Living Sky Foundation at 3 River Ln, Studio 1A,

in Sperryville, Va. And the invitation for the August 11 tour from the event planners tempts with these words, “The days are long, the evenings are light, and the temperatures are warm… and August is for Art! Leave the dogs and cats at home and indulge in a day of art and entertainment before school starts up again. Rappahannock County Artisan Trail members are featuring art classes, gallery exhibitions and entertainment for your enjoyment, and there are always wonderful lodging opportunities and culinary delights for you as well. Welcome to a day – or a weekend – of artful pleasure on the Trail!” Also, mark your calendar for November 3rd and 4th to be sure to come

Supervisors faced extensive consent agenda in July’s final meeting Delinquent tax collection and sanitary district issues passed on a 5-0 vote

The Warren County Board of Supervisors passed an extensive Consent Agenda at their last meeting in July.

By Timothy Ratigan Warren/Frederick County Report During the June 17th Warren County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board passed an extensive consent agenda. The first item was a request from the Warren County Sheriff ’s Office to transfer a 2007 Ford 150 vehicle from their office to the Warren County Parks and Recreational Department. Second on the list was an explanation to the board from the County Attorney Dan Whitten. He reported that for the past two years, delinquent real estate tax accounts have been split with TACS Law Firm and the Pond Law Group for collection. The contract for services has been in effect since August 1, 2016 with the option of renewal for additional years. Section 58.1-3919.1 and 58.1-13934 of the Virginia Code gives authority to the treasurer, with the approval of the Board of Supervisors, to hire attorneys to collect any local taxes which have been delinquent for six months or more. At the end of the current one-year term, the treasurer and the supervisors planned on analyzing the monthly collection reports to determine the effectiveness of each law firm. The results show that Pond Law Group collected $205,953 in 2016 and $391,656

in 2017; and $133,921 so far in 2018. The recommendation is to extend the contract an additional year, from August 1, 2018 until July 31, 2019. The consent agenda’s third item concerned the county’s contract with Racey Engineering which is set to expire on July 17, 2018. Pursuant to the contract, Racey Engineering provides services and road and drainage studies for the roads in the Shenandoah Farms Sanitary District, Lake Front Royal Sanitary District, and other roadway, drainage, public works, maintenance and/or construction projects for county departments and other sanitary districts in Warren County. Such work has also included survey services for the Appalachian Trail connector. According to the report, Racey Engineering provided satisfactory services and performed well under the contract. The contract contains a renewal option that provides for three additional one-year terms. A proposed amendment to the contract would extend the term for an additional one-year term from July 18, 2018 until July 17, 2019. This renewal will leave two renewal terms remaining. The funding for any work in sanitary districts would come from the individual sanitary district’s budgets. The fourth item on the consent agenda involved an explanation of a Rural Addition Revenue Sharing Project for Lake Front Road and Lake Front Royal Sanitary Districts. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is currently administering a rural addition project to upgrade the 0.14-mile-long Lake Front Road, to include a new box culvert over the Sloat Creek, and a 0.08 mile section of Creek Road to improve access into the Lake Front Royal Community. The roadways will be upgraded to meet VDOT standards and upon completion will be added to their secondary road system for maintenance. This project, originally requested by

the Lake Front Royal Property Owners Association, was ranked as the county’s number one priority when the Board of Supervisors approved the current Rural Addition Priority List on October 18, 2017. The project is currently ranked as the number one priority on the Lake Front Royal Capital Improvement Plan. The estimated $700,000 project is being funded through VDOT’s Revenue Sharing Program with the county and Lake Front Royal Sanitary District each putting up 25 percent of the cost and VDOT putting up the remaining 50 percent. The next item was a request for authorization to advertise for a public hearing for the 2018 Wildcat Drive Sanitary District tax rate for the fiscal year 2018-19 budget. At its meeting on April 17, 2018 the county adopted an ordinance that formally established the Wildcat Drive Sanitary District. The district currently has 45 lots and 38 homes. The Wildcat Drive Sanitary District Advisory Board held its initial meeting on July 2nd to review the proposed budget and tax rates for the fiscal year 2018-19. The supervisors need to adopt a budget and tax rate so that the treasurer can send a supplemental bill to residents for the first half of the taxes which were due on June 5, 2018. The advisory board has recommended a base rate of $400 per developed lot and $60 per undeveloped lot. In suggesting the increase, the advisory board was concerned about the ability to generate enough revenue to maintain the district roads, which includes making necessary asphalt repairs and as well as factoring in significant future improvements. The sixth item on the consent agenda was another request to advertise for a public hearing. The county has filed a petition for Declaratory Judgment against the former country club and the unknown heirs of Agnes H. Carson and William E. Carson to re-

move the requirement of a golf course on property owned by the County of Warren, Virginia. The county has been in contact with a number of Carson heirs who are supportive of the change. The Front Royal Golf Club property was given to the people of Front Royal and Warren County by William E. and Agnes H. Carson with the intention of developing the land, which was the site of the Battle of Guard Hill on August 16, 1864, into a park. The park

was the inspiration of Mr. Carson, who was the first director of the Virginia Conservation and Development Commission, one of the key figures behind the Shenandoah National Park and was instrumental in founding a system of state parks throughout Virginia. This concludes the six items from the Consent Agenda passed by the Warren County Board of supervisors on June 17th on a 5-0 vote. – tim@areaguides.com

County receives 2018 Annual Achievement Award Early August, 2018 • Warren/Frederick County Report • Page 11

DeAnna Cheatham and Michelle Smeltzer are praised for their efforts

Warren County Board of Supervisors Chairman Tony Carter and County Administrator Doug Stanley present an award from the National Association of Counties, recognizing Social Services Director DeAnna Cheatham and Liaison Michelle Smeltzer for their work in Human Services.

By Timothy Ratigan Warren/Frederick County Report Warren County Administrator Doug Stanley gave his report to the Board at their meeting in July on the 17th at the Warren County Government Center. Before his usual report to the board, he presented an award from the National Association of Counties in recognition of Warren County’s Community Liaison Program. In his comments, he outlined the achievements of Community Liaison Michelle Smeltzer and her part in attaining the award. “The National Association of Counties has recognized the Warren County Community Liaison Program for

the 2018 Annual Achievement Award for the category of Human Services. “This award honors innovative and effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents. The community liaison division was developed through the efforts of the Warren County Youth Advisory Board. The purpose of the liaison division is to assist Warren County residents in locating resources for issues that they may be facing and may be uncertain or unaware of where to turn for help and or direction. The Community Liaison assists individuals and families regardless of age or income. “The Community Liaison has helped residents locate resources to help address housing, homelessness,

and mental health, social services benefits and many other day-to-day problems. The position is housed with the Department of Social Services but is able to meet clients anywhere outside normal business hours. “Our Community Liaison, Michelle Smeltzer, has recently assisted an 85-year-old Warren County resident who had been without water for five months. The project was able to be completed by Smeltzer linking community resources together to help replace the well pump. I am extremely proud of Deanna, her predecessor, and the Youth Advisory Board for their leadership in establishing the Community Liaison Leadership and this award recognizes the unique approach that Warren County has taken to address and identify needs in the community. Michelle is making a difference every day in the Front Royal and Warren County Community,” Stanley said. Stanley then moved on to his regular report. The county has recently contracted with a consultant to conduct a visioning process to kick off the update of the county’s Comprehensive Plan. The plan was last approved by the Board of Supervisors on July 16, 2013. The county is required to begin the update of the plan every five years. The update began on July 13, 2018 with a citizen survey. The survey will be available on the county’s website and hard copies will be provided at the government center or may be mailed if requested. The survey addresses various topics such as land use, education,

housing, county services, parks and recreation, transportation, taxes, etc. The plan provides the framework for how the community wishes to develop over the next 15-20 years. The survey is an excellent opportunity for citizens to become involved in the update of the plan, which is the county’s official guide for future development-related decisions. Stanley moved on to his next subject, regarding building inspections. So far this year, the county has had a total of 86 new home starts. Of that number 10 were in town and the remaining 76 were outside the town limits. By June 30, 2017, 87 new homes had been started. In total, 181 new homes were started in 2017. Based on last year’s projected total of 172 new starts, this represented an annual growth rate in housing stock of 1.03 percent. As projected, 2018 would be the first year of a decrease in new homes starts since 2010. The Development Review Committee met on June 27th, 2018. The committee discussed projects in the county. There are proposed plans pending for a Valvoline Quicklube and plans have been received for a Taco Bell location, both in Riverton Commons Shopping Center. Town and other projects were also discussed at the meeting. Stanley’s report continued with information on these projects: • Good progress is being made on the new police headquarters. • Architectural plans have been received for the Afton Inn; they will be keeping structure and adding enhancements. • IT Federal is starting a lift station. They need to address violations with storm water. Work is ongoing, and no stop work order has been issued • The owner of Front Royal Limited Partnership is working on plans for 320 units and the rezoning of 604 acres. • Delinquent Tax Sale: TACS Law Firm was scheduled to hold a sale of 43 delinquent real estate properties at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday July 24th at the Warren County Government Center for lots located in the Shenandoah

ODB O W

Shores, Shenandoah Farms, Linden Heights, and Skyland Estates Subdivisions. The Pond Law Group is also proposing a sale this fall and anticipates that they will be authorized in September to sell a total of 33 Properties. • Wingate Appraisal has completed approximately 19,087 parcels or 75 percent of all county parcels. They are currently working in the town and in the Poor House Limeton and Browntown areas. The Planning Department has developed a map that shows what areas have been completed and which areas Wingate is currently working on. The link is posted on both the county’s website and Facebook page. • The Wildcat Drive Sanitary District – The board appointed a three-member advisory board which met on July 12th and has recommended a 2018 tax rate and Fiscal Year 2018-19 budget. The recommendation is on the agenda for advertising for a public hearing. • The Shangri-La revenue sharing project started the week of June 2nd. The box culvert was installed last week. The project should be completed in two to three weeks. • VDOT is planning to start construction this spring on the Lake Front Royal revenue sharing project. County staff is working to obtain the necessary-right-of-way dedication for the project, so the board can certify the right-of-way to VDOT. Once this is complete VDOT can schedule the start of this project. • VDOT/Marlow-Silek revenue sharing project. This project is substantially complete. County staff hopes to be able to complete final acceptance of the project this summer and approved final payment to the contractor. • VDOT/Morgan Ford Bridge. The bridge and roadway were substantially completed June 1st, 2018 per the contract. The bridge approaches were damaged during the recent flooding and temporary repairs have been completed. Additional repairs will be made prior to the scheduling of a ribbon cutting ceremony now planned in early August. – tim@areaguides.com

This was partly because before the war, Virginia’s transportation wasn’t very good, and it was cheaper to bring in goods from somewhere else so many furnaces had closed. Wartime caused transportation over rivers, roads and railroads to improve. When the Civil War began in 1861, Virginia had 14 charcoal iron furnaces in operation. Twenty-two others had been temporarily shut down. More furnaces started up again, and during the war, the Tredegar Furnace in Richmond was producing cannons, shot, steel plates and federal ironclads. When the war was over, iron had been purchased with Confederate notes, so a lot of money was lost, and free (slave) labor was gone, so most businesses were destroyed, but some furnaces still struggled on until 1870. Scott’s book recounts how they alone survived the devastation of the war and also describes the critical importance of the Shenandoah River and later the railroads in transporting iron ingredients and products. The book also explores the major impact of German-Americans in the valley iron trade and why industrial slaves were held in high esteem. The role of “industrial slaves” is covered in one of the book’s chapters. According to Scott, eastern Virginia was agriculture-based, and most slaves worked on plantations raising

corn, tobacco and other crops, but when the iron industry needed skilled workers, the managers “rented” some of them out to the mining companies to learn skills as apprentices. At the time, not as much was understood about metallurgy or chemistry, so these workers were valued, along with other skills, for testing whether the iron was a good batch when it came out. They had more responsibility and were paid, giving them a little more help in taking care of their families, even though they were never al-

lowed to purchase their freedom. Also, the small settlements that grew up around the furnaces were called “iron plantations” but were more like small factory towns with housing, stores, cobblers, and other types of necessary businesses. There were also some farms nearby to supply food for the workers and their families. Some of the buildings are still there, although most have fallen or been burned down, but remnants of the stone furnace stacks can be seen.

The Gem Furnace, seen in this photo, built in Page County, was one of Virginia’s hot-blast iron furnaces built in the lower Shenandoah Valley. Photo courtesy of the National Park Service.

The furnaces used charcoal to fire them and the process for making iron is involved and interesting, but it ate up entire forests. “It’s hard to believe how much acreage was cleared out here in Virginia,” said Scott. So, with a wealth of information to be found in Shenandoah Iron, Scott’s latest book published last year, readers will learn about the iron story of the 29 furnaces in the counties watered by the Shenandoah River from Rockingham to Frederick. Folks who love the details of little known historical facts of the Valley

will find this and his other books well worth the time to read. His previous two books cover other regions of the valley of Virginia’s iron belt. Scott said that after retirement he realized that he needed to complete his work on the southwest Virginia iron industry and so in 2012, he published Iron and the Gap, which detailed the iron works in Lee and Wise counties and finished A River of Iron in 2015. This work reported on the iron history of Alleghany, Augusta, Botetourt and Rockbridge counties. Shenandoah Iron is his third book, he said and has one more to go. According to his press release, “His next book, Big Lick, Cripple Creek and Rye Valley Iron, will complete the series, covering the entire valley between the Blue Ridge and the Alleghany Mountains from Frederick County in the north to Lee County in the south.” He describes his writing as easy for the average person to understand, and the book is illustrated with pictures, diagrams and maps. “It’s a great hobby to do in retirement. It’s an enjoyable activity and I’m pleased to pass on this part of Virginia history and hope others are as interested as I am,” he said. Scott also plans to write and publish a novel, Vindicated, revealing a wellkept government secret during the recent cold war with Russia. He currently lives in Verona, Virginia and has two sons and four grandchildren. Shenandoah Iron is available from Amazon.com and is currently on sale at the Luray Valley Museum shop at Luray Caverns. He has also donated Shenandoah Iron to local libraries so that this important local history is available to the public. This 336-page book has over 139 photographs and illustrations to show the process from which iron is separated from the ore and turned into useful products. For information, call Norman H. SS Front Royal survived World War II while providing aid to U.S. forces in Europe Tanker named after the Civil War Battle in our town made three North Atlantic crossings under fire

The US WW2 Tanker called “Hat Creek” is the same model as the SS Front Royal and shows how it would have looked at sea.

By Carol Ballard Warren/Frederick County Report Richard Kline, a local resident who is fascinated by history, noticed that the 75th anniversary of the launch of the SS Front Royal, a tanker built to transport fuel to bombers, tanks, jeeps and ships in war zones and to American Allies during World War II, is coming up in August and he thought it would be fitting to honor her service. He contacted us and here is what we learned. During World War II, the armed forces in Europe needed supplies and it was the job of merchant marine ships and their crews to provide them. U.S. tankers made 6,500 trips carrying 65 million tons of oil and gasoline from the U.S. and Caribbean to our Allies and supplied 80 percent of the fuel. The SS Front Royal was a T2-SE-A1 (Navy designation) tanker which was the workhorse of the tanker fleet – 481 being built during the war. It was

one of five tankers ordered in 1940 from Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock of Chester, Pennsylvania, by Keystone Tankships company and based on a T2 type, but designated design T2-A because at 526 ft (160.3 m) in total length, was bigger but faster. The SS Front Royal began her service on August 27, 1943 shortly after being launched on August 21. Kline discovered that these ships were named after significant American battles, beginning with the Revolutionary War, continuing with the Battle of 1812, and by the time of World War II, they had run out of those names and began naming them after Civil War battles, so this ship was named after the 1862 Civil War battle fought at Front Royal, Virginia, he said. His research also led him to find the memoirs of a sailor who had served aboard the SS Front Royal. Edward Frederick Barta was a United States Navy Armed Guard and excerpts from his memoirs about crossing the North Atlantic Ocean and sailing in the Mediterranean from June 18, 1943 to December 3, 1945 are a personal account and short history of what it was like to be part of the war dodging submarines, surface ships, aircraft, mines and the elements. He

crossed three times during the war on the armed SS Front Royal merchant ship. A typical tanker crew had 42 to 45 mariners and 17 Armed Guards and it should be noted that the Guards served on these ships alongside U.S. Merchant Marines. The mariners, ranging in age from 16 to 78 years old, were all volunteers who hadn’t been drafted into the U.S. maritime service. Many of them were “unfit” for the military due to health or disabilities. Mariners were highly paid compared to the Navy Armed Guard but received pay only while serving aboard ship and if the ship was sunk, their pay stopped, and they had to pay for and find their own way home somehow. According to one memorial to them, “They could have stayed home but were eager to help win the war and chose to risk the perils of the sea.” The Armed Guard was responsible for defense. They didn’t do the actual running of the ship but had to stand watch in port and at sea. Three seamen stood at the bow, stern and gangway in port, and sea watch consisted of four men with binoculars stationed on the bow, bridge and stern looking for anything unusual. None of the ships Barta served on had radar, as this was usually reserved

for warships. The Armed Guard ate the same food that the merchant seamen did but in a separate mess and all slept on bunks either in a communal area or in semi-private or individual quarters depending upon the specific ship arrangement and rank. According to his memoir, he had a touch of seasickness on his first trip at sea but using self-discipline, made up his mind not to be sick and was never

sick at sea again. This served him well during the frequent North Atlantic storms. Also, during the three Atlantic crossings, U-boat attacks were fairly common. When general quarters would sound, they manned the guns. Destroyers escorting the convoy would drop depth charges on suspected U-boat positions. The Front Royal was relatively heavily armed with a 5”/38 caliber dual

purpose gun on the stern (typical caliber for a destroyer’s main armament), a 3”/50 on the bow and eight 20 mm cannons, four around the bridge and four on the stern, according to the official description. Barta said his assignment was as 1st powder man on the 5”/38. The 5”/38 used semi-fixed ammunition, e.g., the shell and powder canister were loaded separately. Ed’s battle station was on the gun platform where he would place the canister on the conveyor after the shell was in position. At some point, he left the SS Front Royal and was assigned to the tanker SS James Jackson where he experienced many enemy attacks. He was on the James Jackson when it went to Oran, Algeria to pick up

troops and returned to Naples via Augusta, Sicily. Ships traveling in convoys through the Strait of Messina from Augusta to Naples were timed to minimize attacks by the active Luftwaffe in the Strait. During one round trip from Naples, on the return trip the ship was attacked at night by the Luftwaffe off Algiers, and Allied ships were sunk. The James Jackson couldn’t stop to rescue the sailors and had to leave that to a Navy tug accompanying the convoy. Most Luftwaffe attacks were at night because it was much more difficult for the Armed Guard gunners to see their targets. During this fight Ed’s gun crew shot down German planes, and the air attack resulted in the crew being awarded Battle Stars.

According to the Navy, Battle Stars, also known as Bronze Stars, on Area Service Ribbons were awarded to U.S. Navy Armed Guard crews on U.S. Merchant Marine Ships for participation in Operations or Engagements. The Navy defines an Operation as “a series of connected military actions occupying a specific area and time and may involve many clashes with the enemy” while an “Engagement” is “an action with the enemy within a restricted time and area, and of sufficient intensity and significance to justify recognition.” The following is taken from the website of an American Merchant Marine Memorial: It reads, “In memory of merchant marines: Dedicated to the veterans of the U.S. Merchant Marines

Humane Society of Warren County update Page 16 • Warren/Frederick County Report • Early August, 2018

By Ken Thurman Warren/Frederick County Report I talked with HSWC board members President Ellen Aders, Amy Thurman, and Vice President Julie Covert about the status of the animal shelter and all their upcoming events. Top of my list was the Dragon Boat Race down the Shenandoah River, which last year raised over $40,000. I had heard it was cancelled and had to ask why? Ellen told me that PETCO ($17,000 - $20,000 per year) changed their grant deadline to October 1 which meant the shelter would not get the grant for this year and that due to their previous director Lavenda Denney leaving, they had missed the marketing window for the event leaving them with less than the number of

boats necessary to hold the event profitably. She and the other board members reiterated that the event would go on next year for August 2019. They pointed out that despite this setback, the shelter is doing great. They have maintained their no-kill status for dogs and cats, adoptions are doing great, they have a top-notch team that knows animal care, senior leadership is in place and they have many more events planned this year. First up is a members only event on August 14th at Beth Waller’s Main Street location, followed closely by Yappy Hour August 24th at the Shenandoah Valley golf course. The pace continues September 7th with a golf tournament at Bowling Green golf course which benefits the HSWC and the Warren County Department of

Social Services. Next up is the September 14th Pawcaso art show at City National Bank from 6-9 p.m. Once again, Kelly Walker from The Studio is providing 10 original commissioned art works plus overseeing the creation of over 40 pieces of art done with the cats and dogs at the shelter. If last year’s event is any example you need to get there early because they sold out in less than an hour. These unique artworks combine pet power with enhancements by the volunteers who work at the shelter to create some of the most fascinating artwork you will ever see. And, don’t forget the November 17th “Tales and Ales” event at the Moose Lodge. Tickets are $35 a person and seating is limited to 250 and they have also sold out every year. This event now in its third year, fea-

tures food (Devin Smith is catering again this year – yummy good), games, auctions, door prizes and more. The shelter is currently interviewing candidates for a new executive director after the departure for personal reasons of their interim director. Ellen also mentioned that they are looking to fill three open board seats with individuals dedicated to animal welfare. The three also pointed out that they are always looking for volunteers, persons interested in fostering animals, and of course new members. Membership is tax deductible, allows the member to vote, provides quarterly updates via their newsletter, and helps save animals. school and high school students to participate in the fourth annual Congressional App Challenge: “Whether you are editing pictures, checking your steps, calling a ride, or crushing candy, apps provide citizens with tools, assistance, and entertainment on a daily basis. The Congressional App Challenge is a great opportunity for students to be creative and develop their own app! Today’s youth do not know a world without such accessible technology and because of this, it is important that they explore STEM fields, like computer science education and coding. Technology will only continue to play a large role in their lives, so I invite all Sixth District middle and high school students to showcase their skills, ideas, and determination by partaking in this challenge. I look forward to seeing the unique apps that will come from this

year’s participants.” Additional Information: In 2013, the U.S. House of Representatives established the Congressional App Challenge as a nationwide event that allows students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting a software application, or app, for tablet, mobile, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. The winning apps may be eligible for display in the U.S. Capitol Building. Number of Homes for Sale Declines Across Much of Winchester Region Median sale prices rose region-wide in and around Winchester in June, according to Long & Foster reports. Inventory declined sharply in some areas – up to 18 percent in Shenandoah County. The region includes Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren counties and the city of Winchester. Despite the sharp decline in the number of available homes, sales were up 39 percent in Shenandoah County compared to a year earlier. Median sale prices ranged from $205,450 in Shenandoah County to $277,000 in Frederick County. The price average increase over the four regions was 13.5 percent over a year earlier. “June was not the kind of month we normally would expect, but most would agree that’s the result of having inventory contraction every month for the past three years,” said Larry “Boomer” Foster, president of Long & Foster Real Estate. “It’s challenging for buyers, but not for sellers, especially at the entry-level price point and a couSee BRIEFS, 20

BRIEFS, from 19 ple of levels up, in most markets.” Agents and buyers should go into today’s competitive marketplace aware of the emotions involved in trying to secure a contract on a house, he said. Buyers may get into a bidding war, only to feel regretful later and drop out during the home inspection process. An experienced real estate agent will analyze the local market and advise clients on whether to walk away or escalate a bid. “The market determines what the house is worth, and if there are a number of people willing to pay that price, that is the market price of the house,” Foster said. “If you look at home price appreciation over time, the curve is up. The quickest way to build wealth right now is to own real estate.” The second half of 2018 is expected to mirror the first, with inventory tightening and continuing to impact the number of units sold. Economic fundamentals are strong, with historically high homeownership rates, along with solid consumer and builder confidence levels. Interest rates are expected to rise slightly, but still remain low relative to past rates. Builders’ margins are squeezed by rising tariffs on Canadian lumber and labor scarcity, which leads them to build larger, more expensive homes, Foster said. “Builders are unable to build the product we need, which is entry-level houses,” he said. “But when you look at the metrics, we’re set up for a really strong real estate market.”

Winchester area to host 2019 Harley Owners Group Annual Rally The Winchester area has been chosen as the host community for the 2019 Harley Owners Group (HOG) Annual Rally, coined as the “Curves to Cores HOG Rally.” The event, held over five days from June 19-23, 2019, will attract in excess of 2,000 attendees per day and result in an estimated

direct impact of $3-$4 million in local spending. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be chosen as the host community,” says Justin Kerns, Executive Director of the Winchester-Frederick County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “This event will not only bring a strong financial impact to our area hotels and businesses, but more importantly it will introduce the Winchester area as a return vacation destination to thousands of people across the country.” The event, which was held last year in Roanoke and titled the “Merging Mountains HOG Rally,” is projected to fill nearly half of the entire hotel capacity in the Winchester and Frederick County area, with 1,250 rooms per night for four consecutive nights. According to Kerns, the CVB has been working with hotel properties for months leading up to today’s announcement. Participating hotels, rates and group codes will be released by the event coordinator, Jo Ann Emmons, in the months to come. “The big selling point for the Winchester area is the uncrowded curvy roads, which are perfect for motorcycle rides,” says Jo Ann Emmons, HOG rally coordinator. “Combined with the beautiful orchards and rich apple history, it’s a perfect setting for a rally. I’m so excited to bring this event back to the area, as it has been nearly 25 years since the HOG rally has been to Winchester. The event has grown significantly since then, and so has Winchester.” While the majority of the event is being held for the benefit of registered Harley Owners Group members, there will be a few opportunities for the public to participate in festivities. A Harley Davidson demo truck will showcase the newest models and let the public test ride a Harley Davidson, and a motorcycle parade through Winchester is being planned for the morning of June 22nd. “The Winchester Harley Davidson dealership is proud to welcome the Harley Owners to this part of the Shenandoah Valley,” says Barbara Grove, owner of Grove’s Harley Davidson. “The motorcycle riding is nothing less than spectacular and I know they will fall in love with the scenic byways and friendly people. We are planning a big welcome party with some special guest appearances, a chance to win a new motorcycle, along with music,

VDOT Schedules Hearing For Replacing Route 522 Opequon Creek Bridge In Frederick County The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing concerning the replacement of the Opequon Creek Bridge on Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) in Frederick County. The meeting will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Armel Elementary School, 2239 Front Royal Pike, Winchester, VA 22602. Citizens can come in during the meeting hours and discuss the project on a one-on-one basis with VDOT officials and designers. Written comments can be submitted at the meeting or within 10 days after the meeting date to Mr. James Johnston, P.E., Project Manager. Virginia Department of Transportation, 811 Commerce Road, Staunton, VA 24401-9029. Oral comments can be recorded at the meeting with the assistance of a court reporter. The southbound Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) Opequon Creek Bridge in eastern Frederick County has reached

the end of its service life. Built in 1953, the two-lane bridge is considered functionally obsolete. Functionally obsolete means a structure was designed with older design features that no longer meet current geometrics or modern traffic needs. This designation has no connection to condition rating, but is based on functionality. The new bridge will have two lanes and will be in the same location and be about a foot higher and will be widened slightly on its eastern side. The new structure will have steel girders and a concrete deck. The approaches on either side of the bridge will be widened and new guardrail will be installed. A six-foot wide paved shoulder will be provided on the right side of the new bridge.

During construction a temporary detour will route southbound traffic through median crossovers to the northbound bridge over Opequon Creek. The northbound bridge will have one lane of traffic in each direction during the construction period. This 0.452-mile long project extends from 0.85-mile north of Route 642 to 0.05-mile north of Route 644. In 2016 Route 522 had an average daily traffic count of 17,000 vehicles per day. By the design year of 2043 the estimated average daily traffic volume is 26,000 vehicles per day. The total estimated cost for this project is $5.4 million, including $825,000 for preliminary engineering and $4.6 million for construction. The Route 522 Opequon Creek Bridge

From left: Jose Padua and Jess Willard Front Royal poet wins national prize Jose Padua of Front Royal has won the 2019 Miller Williams Poetry Prize for his collection A Short History of

Monsters. A finalist was also named: Jess Williard for his collection Unmanly Grief. Padua and Williard were selected by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins. The University of Arkansas Press will publish both books, and Padua will receive a $5,000 cash prize in addition to publication. The prize and series are named in honor of Miller Williams, an acclaimed poet, the founding director of the University of Arkansas Press, and a long-time professor in the U of A creative writing program. In 1988 the press published Billy Collins’ debut collection, The Apple that Astonished Paris, under Williams’ directorship. Padua’s poems appear regularly in the online journal Vox Populi. He is a

veteran of the spoken word and downtown New York literary scene and has spent the last 10 years living in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Jess Williard’s poems, stories, essays and reviews have appeared in a variety of publications, including Poetry Northwest, Third Coast, North American Review, Colorado Review, Southern Humanities Review, Poet Lore, Oxford Poetry and many others. Willard is from Wisconsin. The two books will be launched at the Association of Writers and Writer’s Programs meeting in Portland, Oregon, in March 2019. Guiding his editorial decision, Collins said in his series editor’s preface for the 2019 books that he chose manuscripts that Miller Williams “would enjoy reading for their own merits,” and not for their similarity to Williams’s own poems. Collins also said that Williard wrote “natural sounding poems that lead us to striking insights and strange destinations” and that beneath the surface of Padua’s “lively, soulful poems” there was “a smart, sympathetic mind at work.”

Each short video in this series highlights one aspect of forage and livestock production, whether it be stockpiling forage for winter grazing, measuring forage growth with a falling plate meter, grazing cattle in the snow, or using a drylot or muzzle to curb overgrazing in a horse. All of these practices can dramatically help reduce operational costs of a livestock operation. Lord Fairfax Health District Warns Residents of Rabid Cat in Maurertown Seek Help Immediately if You Were Exposed The Lord Fairfax Health District is notifying the public of a rabid cat found on the south end of Maurertown. On Friday July 27, 2018, at least three persons in or near the Hillview Subdivision in Maurertown, Va., were attacked by a black cat which was found to be infected with rabies. Known attacks occurred specifically on Nikita Drive and nearby Old Valley Pike. The cat has been captured and euthanized, and no longer poses a threat, but anyone who believes they had contact with this cat, especially if bitten, scratched, or licked by it, should immediately report to the nearest emergency room. Anyone whose pet was exposed to this cat should contact their veterinarian immediately. Rabies is a deadly disease that is 100% fatal once symptoms begin, but can be prevented with treatment if begun shortly after exposure. For further information or questions, call the Shenandoah County Health Department at 540-459-3733.

The Health Department strongly advises that people take the following steps to prevent families and pets from being exposed to rabies: • Avoid stray cats and dogs. Feral or unknown cats and dogs may also carry rabies. Report bites or scratches from these animals to your physician or the Health Department. • Vaccinate all cats, dogs and ferrets against rabies (even if they don’t go outdoors) and keep their shots up to date. • Keep pets confined to your property or walk them on a leash. • If one of your domestic animals is bitten or otherwise interacts with a wild animal, notify the local Health Department and animal control officer at once. • Never approach or touch wild animals, especially any raccoon, fox, skunk, or bat, especially if it is behaving oddly or if it is seen in the daylight. These animals are the main carriers of rabies in the eastern United States. • Do not feed wild animals or stray cats and dogs. Eliminate outdoor food sources around the home. If in doubt, or if you have a question, call your local Health Department: Winchester/Frederick County 540-722-3470; Clarke - 540-955-1033; Warren - 540-635-3159; Page - 540743-6528, or Shenandoah - 540-4593733. CRIME OF THE WEEK

Frederick County Crime of the Week - July 13, 2018 The following images are from a home surveillance where the residents’ vehicles were entered and items were stolen. This has been happening throughout Frederick County. Be sure to remove all valuables from vehicles. If you have any information regarding this incident or any other Crime, or the location of a Wanted Person, please contact Crime Solvers at (540) 665-TIPS (8477). Information leading to the arrest of a suspect may result in a reward of up to $1,000. For this crime please reference incident number 18003233 Hey Stewart, Are there trees that can be used to help cure sick people? – Walter in Warren County

Ask Stewart

Well, I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on TV, but I do know that there are many trees commonly grow in North America and parts of Europe that possess medicinal benefits. During the fall and winter months most of the medicinal trees can offer roots, twigs and bark for the healing of a multitude of standard ailments. To ensure the longevity of the tree, never cut bark from the trunk of a living tree and avoid ring barking or girdling the medicinal tree. The complete removal of an entire strip of bark from around the circumference of a trunk or branch can result in damage and ultimately the death of the tree. The medicinal benefits from the bark are found in the greenish yellow or green cambium layer just beneath the outer portion of the bark. Bark can be dried and saved for the future or put to immediate use. Here are 10 of the more popular medicinal trees: (NOTE: You should do additional research and consult your physician before trying any of

these at home) 1. Alder – Astringent used as a wound wash and healing agent on deep wounds. Leaf and bark teas are used to treat tonsillitis, fever, as a douche, and for hemorrhoids. 2. Apple – Tree bark is used to treat fevers and diarrhea. Stewed apples can be used as a laxative. Baked apples are great as a warm poultice for fevers and sore throat. Apple cider helps destroy intestinal flora and decrease bacteria flowing to the bowels. 3. Ash – Twig tips and leaves turned into a tea help reduce rheumatism, jaundice and gout. 4. Beech – Bark tea from this tree will help treat lung problems and was once used in tuberculosis treatments. It is also used to help cleanse the blood. Beech tea is not recommended for pregnant women. Leaf tea is used in poultices to treat frostbite and burns. 5. Birch – Leaf tea helps heal sores in the mouth and helps heal bladder and kidney problems, and gout. Use bark in a bath to aid psoriasis, skin rashes and eczema. 6. Cedar – Bark tea is used to treat fevers, rheumatism, the flu and chest colds.

7. Elder – Bark tea is used to treat headaches, for congestion, and to lower fever by inducing perspiration. 8. Elm – Bark salve and poultices are used to treat gunshot wounds, chilblain, and on the abdomen to draw out fever. Bark tea is very high in calcium and helps increase the healing of injured bones, heal sore throats, soothe urinary and bowel issues, and to thwart diarrhea. 9. Hawthorne – Leaf tea is brewed as a “cardiac tonic” but extended use is known to cause a drop in blood pressure. It is recommended to use it for just two weeks and then take a week off before starting the treatment again. 10. Dogwood -- A medicine made from the bark of this tree native to the eastern United States often has been substituted for quinine. During the Civil War, Confederate doctors used it to treat malaria cases. Although it grows in abundance, drug companies looked past it to the more powerful quinine that comes from the cinchona tree of South America. Your Friend in the Trees,

- Stewart

The Front Royal/Warren County Tree Steward program began in 1997 with volunteers dedicated to improving the health of trees by providing educational programs, tree planting and care demonstrations, and tree maintenance throughout the community. The group now consists of over 30 active members with several interns working toward becoming certified tree stewards from our annual “All About Trees Class”. Each month Stewart will answer a question from our readers. Please forward it to “Stewart” in care of: frwctreestewards@comcast.net and we may publish it in a future issue. Engle’s Angle: “Better than a Washing Machine” By Kevin S. Engle No doubt you’ve heard of the husband who bought his wife a fancy new washing machine for her birthday. Maybe you even know him? I can’t believe a guy would be that dumb and insensitive. I would NEVER do that … I got my wife a pressure washer! Pretty nice huh? Why a pressure washer? So she can clean the deck stairs. And then stain them. Duh! Hey, it’s what she wanted. Last fall, we had to replace the stairs and railing on our deck. Staining them was a this year project. A Judy project. I’d been asking her what she wanted for her big day. When she finally said, it sounded good to me. If my girl wants a pressure washer, then that’s what she’s getting. She even did all the research to figure out which one to buy. Gas or electric? How many PSI? GPM? That’s pounds per square inch and gallons per minute in case you didn’t know. All I had to do was take her to Lowe’s to pick it up. And guess who put it together? She did, of course. All by herself. I sure as heck wouldn’t know how to. I did open the box. That was within my skill set. And last week, when the weather cooperated, she used it for the first time. She did a great job. The stairs and railing look good. And they’ll look even nicer when she’s done staining them. When she finished, she even let me play with her new toy. I was trying it out on the sidewalk. She said it needs cleaned too. I should’ve seen that coming. No worries. She’ll get to it. As soon as she’s done staining the stairs. The author took his wife to Cracker Barrel for breakfast, on her birthday, before getting the power washer. Now that’s a great husband. – kevinengle456@comcast.net
