Legends of angels and a “star” bring comfort and joy to the holidays Jupiter and Saturn align on December 21 in the latest conjunction visible in nearly 800 years

Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System, after Jupiter. The two planets will be distinguishable from each other and from mid-northern latitudes and will be visible low above the southwestern horizon one hour after sunset. By Carol Ballard Warren/Frederick County Report As a relatively dark pandemic year ends, a “light” at the end of the tunnel can literally be seen with the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn creating the appearance of what some have called the “Star of Bethlehem” again. And around this time of year, at the Winter Solstice, as we experience the shortest amount of daylight and the longest night, an old legend has it that angels come close to help us through the darker

days and the cold winter season. Christians and members of many other religions have seen Jesus Christ’s birth as a bright light shining since then, helping people through their darkest days and coming near during chaotic, violent times. Angels are always associated with him and surrounding him in paintings. Many believe he was born near the Winter Solstice, (celebrated, as we all know, on December 25). More angels make their appearance in St. Luke’s gospel, with the announcement by the Archangel

year the “star” will be here too. But from the scientific point of view, the angels may not be visible. Also, what folks are calling a star that we can see very briefly, is actually the conjunction of the two largest planets in our solar system, both of them gas giants. Several secular and scientific authorities have explained what,

where and why we’re seeing it again. “It will be the first Jupiter-Saturn conjunction since 2000, according to EarthSky. See SPACE, 4

But, “The great conjunction of 2020 will be the closest since 1623. …and it has been observable since 1226,” according to Wikipedia. Also, “This will still be quite a striking sight, but you will need to look fast as both planets will set shortly after sunset,” according to NASA’s website which offers the following helpful information. “Skywatchers are in for an endof-year treat. What has become known popularly as the “Christmas Star” is an especially vibrant planetary conjunction easily visible in the evening sky over the next two weeks as the bright planets Jupiter and Saturn come together, culminating on the night of Dec. 21. In 1610, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei pointed his telescope to the night sky, discovering the four moons of Jupiter – Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. In that same year, Galileo also discovered a strange oval surrounding Saturn, which later observations determined to be its rings. These discoveries changed how people understood the far reaches of our solar system. Thirteen years later, in 1623, the solar system’s two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, traveled together across the sky. Jupiter caught up to and passed Saturn, in an astronomical event known as a

tem, with the positions of Jupiter and Saturn being aligned in the sky about once every 20 years. What makes this year’s spectacle so rare, then? It’s been nearly 400 years since the planets passed this close to each other in the sky, and nearly 800 years since the alignment of Saturn and Jupiter occurred at night, as it will for 2020, allowing nearly everyone around the world to witness this “great conjunction.” The closest alignment will appear just a tenth of a degree apart and last for a few days. On the 21st, they will appear so close that a pinkie finger at arm’s length will easily cover both planets in the

sky. The planets will be easy to see with the unaided eye by looking toward the southwest just after sunset. From our vantage point on Earth the huge gas giants will appear very close together, but they will remain hundreds of millions of miles apart in space. And while the conjunction is happening on the same day as the winter solstice, the timing is merely a coincidence, based on the orbits of the planets and the tilt of the Earth. “Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits,” said Throop. “The date of the conjunction is deter-

mined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system.” For those who would like to see this phenomenon for themselves, here’s what to do: • Find a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky, such as a field or park. Jupiter and Saturn are bright, so they can be seen even from most cities. • An hour after sunset, look to the southwestern sky. Jupiter will look

8.99

like a bright star and be easily visible. Saturn will be slightly fainter and will appear slightly above and to the left of Jupiter until December 21, when Jupiter will overtake it and they will reverse positions in the sky. • The planets can be seen with the unaided eye, but if you have bin-

oculars or a small telescope, you may be able to see Jupiter’s four large moons orbiting the giant planet. Each night, the two planets will appear closer low in the southwest in the hour after sunset. – carol@areaguides.com

Valley Health System received 3,000 Pfizer-BioNTech doses on December 15 By Carol Ballard Warren/Frederick Report

Seen here getting the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, by Lisa Athey, RN, at Warren Memorial Hospital, is Jonathan Winter, MD, from Front Royal Family Practice. He said, “Given the prevalence of COVID-19 in this area, I’m terrified that I might contract the virus and unknowingly pass it on to any of my more fragile patients. Getting the vaccine is a no brainer. In fact it’s a relief, and it’s one less stressor in the equation.” He also sees residents at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal.

Just in time to brighten the holidays with rays of hope for all of us going forward in the fight against the spread of the disease known as COVID -19, Valley Health System received an initial shipment of nearly 3,000 of the frozen PfizerBioNTech COVID-19 vaccines on Tuesday, December 15. On December 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted an Emergency Use Authorization for the vaccine after a review for safety and effectiveness by an FDA Advisory Committee made up of an independent panel of experts. Almost immediately, upon receipt of the vaccine, doses were sent to Valley Health hospitals in Woodstock, Luray and Front Royal for front-line healthcare workers who interact directly with patients with the disease and as of Wednesday the 16th, 700 of those had been administered. When Jeffrey Feit, MD was asked how the second day of distribution was going, his response was immediate. “It’s been great. It was a great priority to get it to the nurses and doctors caring for unbelievably sick people. We’re finally seeing the beginning of the end. It’s a happy day, the best we’ve seen,” he said. Feit added that he wanted to speak on behalf of the front-line workers, especially the nurses, who have been facing the brunt of the pandemic. “As our excitement builds to vaccinate our team, we focus on the nurses and doctors who are working in the Intensive Care, Respiratory and Emergency Units who are facing Covid every day under pervasive uncertainty and personal risk,” he said. “We’re very appreciative of them.” “We’ve had some get really sick,” he added. When asked how long it will take before the vaccine doses will be used up, he responded, “That will depend on the tier of risk. We’ll go fast but be careful at the same time.” “With facilities and providers in Virginia and West Virginia, Valley Health is following guidance

from health authorities in both states, which gives priority to vaccinating front-line caregivers most at-risk of contracting COVID-19,” according to their media release. And they have prioritized who gets vaccinated first depending on the:

• level of exposure by their job description. • nature of work they do. • number of patients with the virus they’ve worked with in the last three months. Pulmonary and Critical Care physician B. Frank Lewis, MD was the first to receive the vaccine at

more. Computers with internet are invaluable for in keeping things moving these days. But since the COVID-19 restrictions, this feature has also been restricted and many people don’t feel comfortable coming inside public buildings. So Samuels Library Director Michelle Ross looked for a way to

help fill the need of those who had previously used the library for this. “When looking at the data, we found that many people in the county don’t have internet access and may not have computers either,” she said. “At first we were only going to lend hotspots, but in an attempt to bridge the gap, we decided to put together both laptops and hotspots.” On December 1st, they launched the brand-new “Library Laptop and Hotspot Lending Program.” “This is a pilot program for us,” Ross said. “We are one of the first libraries in the region to offer this. If the program proves successful, we will work to add additional laptops for more access in the future.”

She added that people can pick these up using their curbside service and can also sit in the parking lot or at the tables outside the library if they want quicker access. The library’s staff are happy about this launch as well. “We’re very excited as you can imagine, especially as the new hotspots are with T-Mobile,” said Cheryl Harrison, circulation supervisor at the library. “A lot of areas in the community have to connect through satellites and have poor connections.” Up to this point, many counties, including Warren, have tried to test out access, especially in rural areas, and had not much success, she said, and continued by

saying that there’s a much better reach and connectivity with these hotspots available now. Samuels Library’s Development Administrator Melanie Mullinax in a press said that Warren County resident Elizabeth Schelin was one of the first library patrons to check out the equipment. Schelin was quick to say how much it has helped her. “I’m a teacher who is teaching 100 percent virtual, we have a student in the house who is 100 percent virtual and we have a homebased business in the house. On top of all that, our internet connection just died, and a technician cannot get to our house to fix it for five more days,” she said. “This program is a lifesaver. Thank you so much.” Harrison said, “We wish we had more people who have checked these out, but in time we’re sure to have more and little by little it will grow.” She added that the Office Suite on the laptop is one option that should attract users. Mullinax said that the new program is “designed to address the digital equity needs of our community now, during COVID-19, and beyond. “The digital equity is an ongoing challenge for some students and families in our county. Census records indicate that 10 percent of households in Warren County do not have computer access and nearly 20 percent of households do

not have internet access. “Samuels Library has been addressing this program through a healthy computer access program at the library. The library’s 57 desktop computers and free Wi-Fi access are popular services. In 2019, library users logged more than 23,000 computer sessions and more than 14,000 Wi-Fi sessions. “However, COVID-19 closures shined even more light on the digital equity challenges in our community. The pandemic caused normal locations that offer computer access and free Wi-Fi services to close or open only limited hours. At the same time, demand for computer services were rising with

online education needs increasing and people needing more computer access to apply for jobs, unemployment benefits, or even seek virtual doctors’ appointments.” Ross explained further, “When the library was mandated to shut down in March, we found ways to deliver services to our community through developing virtual programming, adding more digital resources and e-books and implementing curb-side pick-up. The one service we could not provide at the time was essential computer access,” she said. Mullinax continued to outline in detail what library patrons can expect going forward.

“The new Library Laptop Lending Program provides library users with access to 10 brand new laptops configured with widely used office and student programs and a T-Mobile hotspot for internet connection,” she said. Some of the features of the program are that: • The laptops come packed in a Samuels Library backpack and include a hotspot, charger and instructions on their use. • The laptop packs are available to checkout for two weeks at a time and cannot be renewed, although they can be returned and checked out again later. Ross added that (this rule) may be open to some

In addition to this new program, the library added Tutor.com to its growing list of digital resources in November. The nationally recognized online tutoring service provides one-to-one academic and career support and is available free to library cardholders. “Samuels Library has been working diligently throughout the pandemic to ensure that Warren County residents have access to the information and resources they need,” Ross added. “These new programs are examples of how we are meeting needs today, and into the future, to enrich lives and build a stronger community. “I hope people use this and it becomes a great service.” Samuels Public Library is lo-

Ex-EDA director’s bankruptcy hearings continue Page 10 • Warren/Frederick County Report • Late December, 2020

Former board member calls alleged sexual settlement agreement a figment of Jennifer McDonald’s imagination By Tom Sayre Warren/Frederick County Report The United States Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Virginia, Rebecca Connelly, joined the bankruptcy court on July 11, 2012, thereby becoming the court’s first female judge. Her term will expire on July 10, 2026. She convened a preliminary hearing from her home office via Zoom on Wednesday, December 16 regarding former Front Royal/ Warren County Economic Development Authority (EDA) Director Jennifer McDonald’s two completely separate but related bankruptcy filings. On the docket were two Motions for Stay in two bankruptcy cases. One is in McDonald’s Chapter 7 filing and the other for the MoveOn8 LLC, Chapter 7 filing. We inquired of Douglas W. Harold, Jr. a local attorney with 30 years of bankruptcy experience to give us his opinion in layman’s terms what is happening at this stage in the proceedings. “At this point they are trying to see if there are any assets of McDonald’s that are available for the Chapter 7 Trustees to liquidate for the benefit of the creditors,” he responded. “That is what this is all about.” McDonald’s Chapter 7 Bankruptcy & MoveOn8 LLC Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Filings “So today is the preliminary hearing on these motions for relief from stay,” began Connelly. Then Attorney William E. Callahan, Jr. on behalf of the Chapter 7 Trustee, Bob Stevens, and Brittany B. Falabella on behalf of the MoveOn8 Chapter 7 Trustee, Stephen Scott, said through Callahan that, “We had a discussion earlier, the last couple of days, about the issues and I believe … with regards to the determination of the estate’s interests and the property at issue, which was raised in our objection, that portion of the relief request be moved to a date in January which would not affect the other aspect of the relief which has been requested.” He then added, “Which would liquidate the claim against McDonald which the trustee does not oppose.” “What about the request against

non-debtor parties?” asked Connelly. Callahan answered, “We do not object to that either your honor.” Connelly sought to clarify with Callahan whether he thought the request with the other parties will not have an impact on the court’s determination of the estate’s interest in this property. “We don’t believe so your honor,” Callahan said, and added, “It is the exclusive jurisdiction of this court to make this determination. C. Thomas Ebel and Cullen D. Seltzer, represented the EDA and Ebel said, among many things, that they wanted to move on proving an “In Rem Constructive case.” We think Ebel’s theory is that all the assets held by a fraudulent scheme are held in constructive trust for the victims of the fraud. If victims of the fraud can trace the embezzled money into property trans-

ferred to a third party, the third party holds the asset transferred in trust for the relevant victims. Stephen Metz represented both debtors. Judge Connelly was hesitant and asked the lawyers to explain why she should make a decision in their favor. Affidavit has been filed that no sexual harassment settlement agreement document could be found Ebel pointed out that there is an affidavit signed by members of the EDA, “and this affidavit that is filed as an exhibit, says that a search was made (for a sexual harassment settlement agreement document) and no documents could be found.” We contacted Cullen Seltzer after the hearing by phone and

pointed out to Seltzer that we thought it was important that Forensic Auditors hired by the Warren County Board of Supervisors in early September 2018, questioned McDonald for approximately three full days in December 2018. We asked Seltzer if McDonald said anything about a $6.5 milliondollar sexual harassment settlement agreement in December 2018 to the Forensic Auditors and Seltzer liked that analysis and said he would check into it. We also think that McDonald said nothing about a sexual harassment settlement agreement in her email letter of resignation on December 20, 2018 and we suspect she said nothing to the Forensic Auditors as well. Metz said he was unsure of the relevancy of that affidavit and whether the court should

grant relief in the motion. Ebel said the affidavit is relevant because of recent testimony by McDonald. For example, if McDonald says she made purchases based upon a document that does not exist. Ebel stated, “We have to have a claim amount in this bankruptcy.” “We need to go back to state court and liquidate the claims,” he added. Connelly wanted to know exactly what the process was going to be in state court to liquidate the claims. Ebel said Seltzer was better able to answer that question as he was the lead counsel in that case. Seltzer then explained the history of the civil litigation to the court. He said in part that the EDA had won default judgments in state court in January 2020.

Limited time offer.

Connelly questioned him saying, “And what happened at that January 2020 hearing? What was that about and what was the outcome?” “The court ordered that the defendants were in default,” Seltzer responded, then explained that, “the rule modification in Virginia contemplates essentially a bifurcated process. The default as to liability is determined, but default in defendants retain the ability to contest damages. So that is the second part of this hearing that has to happen.” “We have to put a number to this amount,” he added. Seltzer continued, saying that admissions in the First Amended Complaint have gone unanswered and are thereby deemed admitted. Liability does not need to be proved; the only thing left to prove is damages. He then said that, “subsequent to that, the McDonald defendants noted an objection and indicated they wanted a three- to-four-day

jury trial on the question of damages.” Seltzer said, “we don’t think that is permissible.” Adding, that, “we filed a motion for sanctions for that objection because of a lack of answering a single piece of discovery.” On the eve of a continued hearing in July 2020, Seltzer explained that McDonald finally filed some discovery answers, but he said that MoveOn8 has not yet submitted any discovery responses in state court. Seltzer explained that our motion for sanctions was set to be heard in state court on the 25th of September. On September 24th at 4:30 p.m. we got these suggestions in bankruptcy. In response to a question from the judge regarding damages, Seltzer stated, “she (McDonald) didn’t steal property from us, she stole money from us and profited from it.” “And the EDA prevailed in each and every one of them against each

and every one of these debtors and these defendants, and in fact all other defendants,” he added. Seltzer continued. “Discovery is under way, hundreds of thousands of documents have been produced to the parties, … north of a million pages worth of documents, including electronic records,” he told them. “So lots has happened in the state court, that are now nearing fruition from the EDA’s perspective.” Metz responded to Seltzer and stated that the state court could order a three-to-four-day jury trial to set damages. “Obviously my client has sort of come out as the really bad guy here,” Metz said. “It is complicated because of certain 5th Amendment issues that are involved in this case for her, individually.” Metz blurted out, “the whole gist of the complaint against McDonald is fraud, embezzlement, breach of fiduciary duty, all intentional alleged acts that would be involved in dischargeable litigation.”

Ron Llewellyn – McDonald’s sexual harassment settlement agreement is a figment of her imagination

We queried him, asking, “Did you even hear about it? Llewellyn said, “No, not until after I got called, after she made the comment, was the first that I heard about it.” “After McDonald’s comments in the bankruptcy matter?” We asked. His answer was, “Yes.” Llewellyn further explained, “To the best of my knowledge there were no committees set up to do that.” “And the EDA board never voted on it?” we questioned. Llewellyn stated, “We never went into closed session like that.” Taking into account that McDonald testified that she left the agreement in her file at her former EDA office we asked, “And you have never seen this document? “I don’t think it exists. It is like everything else, a figment of her imagination,” Llewellyn answered. Mr. Sayre participated in these bankruptcy meetings as a creditor, having previously been awarded $20,000 in a defamation lawsuit against Mrs. McDonald in Warren County General District Court.

The court will enter the order in McDonald’s chapter 7 case and Ms. Falabella will draft the order as it relates to MoveOn8. A final hearing on the Motion for Relief from Stay was scheduled by Judge Connelly for January 27, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. to hear a myriad of issues discussed during the preliminary hearing. She then asked for the parties to file any persuasive arguments within 14 days and stayed open to the entry of an order on behalf of the movant allowing the state court to enter a dollar amount.

“Star of Wonder” shines again over Front Royal Page 12 • Warren/Frederick County Report • Late December, 2020

The sign in the sky lets local folks know the holiday season is here it appears

Jerry and Carolyn Patterson refurbished the star with paint and lighting, making it brighter.

Residents of Front Royal and Warren County know the holiday season is here when they see a bright star shining above them at the southern end of town. Created more than 50 years ago, by longtime resident Ronald Rossi to mark the end of the Front Royal Plaza construction job, the star was typically turned on at Christmas time. Nathan Patterson, owner of Royal Auto Works, has kept the tradition going and proudly sponsors the Christmas Star for the Town of Front Royal and Warren County.

Rossi to mark the end of the Front Royal Plaza construction job, the star was typically turned on at Christmas time. Nathan Patterson, a secondgeneration owner of Royal Auto Works knows the importance of tradition. For five decades, nestled on top of the hill the star, known as the Christmas Star,

shone brightly for all to see. Since purchasing his dream property in 2018, Patterson has kept the tradition going. “I just [really] like to hear the stories,” Patterson said. “As you probably know, there is just so much negativity in today’s world. To have something positive to look at, it really means a lot to a lot of people.” Patterson said he had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Rossi roughly nine years ago, through a mutual friend. Eight years later, in August 2018, after the death of Rossi, Patterson purchased the property in December. The star was an “added bonus.” Patterson said he had contracts written on two other properties.

But something kept holding him back. “It didn’t seem like it was going to happen,” he said. “I kind of gave up hope.” The next day, Patterson learned of Rossi’s death. A month later, Patterson said, the family accepted the contract for Rossi’s property. Patterson said they “actually forced” the contract to go through earlier so they could get the star turned back on before Christmas-

it was his first and only objective. “It was like it was almost meant to be,” Patterson said. “I never would have known this property existed if it wasn’t for meeting Mr. Rossi. Just seeing the property-the views and everything. It’s amazing.” “I have a picture of him [Rossi] when he was a young man,” Patterson said. “I think I purchased the property around the same age he purchased it too.” Rossi was a business owner. Patterson is a business owner. Patterson said the similarities between the two are uncanny. Patterson said he wishes Rossi was still alive to see how important the star is to the community. “A lady told my parents she was feeling really down one day and was coming down the hill and saw the star,” he said. “It just brightened up her entire day.” If the star looks a little brighter this Christmas, that’s because it is. Patterson said his father took the star down this past summer to update it. “It needed some updates,” he said. “He completely sanded it down and refinished it. We put new LED lights in. It seems a little bit more distinguishable as a star from further out. We’re really proud about that.”

“[We] really wanted it to be more distinguishable because the way it was before, it was just a bunch of light bulbs. The new LED lights really give it that glowmaking it look [really] crisp. Patterson said that social media has really been the driving force of the star. He and his family not only love hearing the stories but reading them on popular community Facebook groups. “The feedback we receive on Facebook is overwhelming-how much it means to the community is incredible.” “We’ve been in business for a

long time,” he said. “40 years.” It’s always been a family business. And community means a lot to us.” Patterson added that residents also stop into the shop and thank them for continuing to light the Christmas Star each year. According to Patterson people travel from afar to see the star in all its glory. He added that he never thought something would mean so much to so many people. “It really means a lot when people are willing to go out of their way to share a memory or a story

with me,” he added. Residents who pay close attention to the star will remember that it was turned on earlier this year to shine a light on the town during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We wanted to bring a little extra positivity to our community,”

he said. Patterson said he also turned it on when one of his neighbors passed way. The neighbor across the street asked me if I’d light the star for him, he said. And he did. The star has been on since Thanksgiving and will remain

Stephens City’s most distinguished citizen lived a life worthy of all imitation

It is my humble opinion that too little attention has been given by local historians to the distinguished career of Dr. John Bell Tilden. Tilden spent the last 45 years of his life as a resident of Frederick County, leaving a lasting impression on the local church and civil government professions.

Dr. John Bell Tilden, son of Captain Richard and Anna (Meyer) Tilden, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 9, 1761 (gravestone reads 1762) and baptized in the Episcopal Church. He died July 31, 1838, in Stephensburg, now Stephen City, Virginia. He was a student at Princeton College studying medicine at the time of the Revolutionary war. He

left college to join the Continental army, receiving a commission as ensign, May 28, 1779, in the Second Regiment Pennsylvania line, commanded by Colonel Walter Stewart. He was subsequently promoted to second lieutenant, his commission to date from July 25, 1780. His regiment left York, Pennsylvania, for the southern campaign in the spring of 1781 and he was present at the siege of Yorktown and surrender of General Cornwallis (was an officer appointed to receive the surrendered arms). At the close of the war he was honorably discharged and became a member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati. During his entire service he kept a diary, which is now in the possession of the Pennsylvania Historical Society, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. John Bell Tilden married Jane Chambers on August 9, 1784. Jane was daughter of Joseph and Martha Chambers of York, Pennsylvania. Sometime after leaving the army in 1783, Tilden settled in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia).

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

During that time, Tilden was converted to Christ in 1787 and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church there and soon became a layman and an active worker in evangelistic efforts. He later relocated to Stephensburg, Frederick County about 1793, where he apparently studied medicine and secured a large and lucrative practice until the close of his life. Being a man of culture and extensive influence, Tilden was ordained to the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church on January 31, 1803 with George Reed and James Chipley as Bondsmen. Tilden was elected a Justice of the Peace and later High Sheriff of Frederick County (1795-1813). He occupied prominent positions in the state as well as the church; and by the exercise of justice and integrity in the discharge of his important duties, reflected credit and honor, both upon his ministerial and magisterial professions. Tilden bought a large two story log home in Ste-

phens City sometime between 1801 and 1815. The house which Tilden named Bell Air, was built by the Lewis Stephens family in 1788 and still stands today. During the agitation of the question of lay representation, Tilden advocated the equal rights of the laity with the clergy in the legislative department of the church. For exercising these Scriptural and American rights, he and other prominent brethren were expelled from the M. E. Church in Stephensburg, in 1828. At his trial he was refused the privilege of reading his defense, so he informed the large assembly, that he would read it from the door steps after leaving the church. Nearly the entire congregation went with him leaving only his accusers behind. Tilden united with his expelled brethren and in the next year, 1829, assisted in organizing the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church. In 1872 the M. E. church admitted its error by adopting lay representation into its polity. The most complete account of Rev. John Tilden’s preaching ability was published in 1880. That year Sketches of the Founders of the Methodist Protestant Church, and its Bibliography by Thomas H. Colhouer, included this description regarding Tilden: “As a reformer, Tilden was like Paul and Luther, bold, earnest, and outspoken, laboring with both tongue and pen to defend and advance the cause of the New Testament equality in the ministry. He promoted the indisputable rights of the laity to representation in the free Gospel Church of Christ. Tilden was a contributor and industrious circulator of the Mutual Rights Magazine, the organ of the Reform party in the Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev John B. Tilden was a fine preacher of noble and dignified bearing, chaste in style, pure in diction, graceful in manner, and a

Chronic Wasting Disease detected for first time in Warren County As a result of the Department of Wildlife Resources’ (DWR) ongoing chronic wasting disease (CWD) surveillance efforts, a hunter-harvested, CWD-positive deer, was recently confirmed in Warren County. This adult buck was harvested during the regular firearms season. Warren County is already included in Disease Management Area 1 (DMA1). Please note that in all DMA counties, the DWR has set up at least one refrigerator drop site for voluntary CWD testing. Information on nearby voluntary CWD testing collection sites can be found here: CWD testing in DMA1. At any point during the deer seasons, a hunter may drop off the head plus 4 inches of attached neck of

a harvested deer at one of the drop sites. Please follow the directions posted at the drop-off site. Some local taxidermists and processors are authorized by the DWR to collect and submit samples on behalf of hunters. Please call your local processor or taxidermist to inquire if they are working with the DWR to assist with CWD surveillance. Whichever way hunters decide to submit deer for CWD testing, the DWR recommends waiting to receive test results before eating the venison. There is no evidence that CWD can infect humans; however, to keep risk of exposure as low as possible, experts advise not eating the venison from CWD-positive deer.

profound and earnest profounder of the Word of God. In his holy life, fervent zeal and spotless character, he set an example that was worthy of all imitation.” Early Days and Methodism in Stephens City, Virginia, by Inez Virginia Steele, first published in 1906 includes an account of a Methodist Dinner Party. The dinner party was held in Rev. Elisha Phelps house in August 1802 at Stephensburg. There Rev. James Quinn described John Tilden as, “an interesting figure, somewhat robust but not corpulent, a fine, manly face, and smiling countenance.” As a committed early Method-

ist he acknowledged the equity of all people before God. These democratic views of social order extended across the racial divide. Long before the abolitionist movement was an organized effort to end the practice of slavery in the United States, Dr. Tilden freed his slaves Lucy and her small child James in April 1806 and sent them to Liberia with one year’s provision. Dr. Tilden will always be remembered as a veteran of the Revolutionary war, doctor and Methodist Minister. His spouse, Jane Chambers was born in York County, Pennsylvania, December 18, 1766 and died May 26 1827.

In 1802, at the age of 35, Jane was described as an interesting lady with white hair as pure wool and eyes beaming with intelligence. They had ten children. Dr. Tilden and Jane are buried in the Tilden family plot at Stephens City UMC Cemetery. Buried in the Tilden family plot are: Anna Belle Tilden Died 1819 Jane Tilden Died 1827 Dr. John B. ENGLE’S ANGLE: “They’re Here!” by Kevin S. Engle The author is currently in a secret location at the North Pole where federal authorities, and the coronavirus, can’t find him. He hopes you’ll enjoy this story which ran in 2009. That’s what the little girl in the movie Poltergeist said when the ghosts arrived. She and her family soon found out those ghosts weren’t all that friendly, or welcome. Guess who else is here? The relatives. Talk about scary. I always look forward to the holidays. I can’t honestly say the

same thing about the family invasion. Disclaimer - Since some of mine may read this, let me assure them that all persons and actions referred to in this article are purely fictitious. I would never, ever, make fun of them or speak unfavorably about them. Unless they give me a crappy gift. In that case, anything goes. As I was saying, I truly love this time of year. The music, the cookies, the lights, the presents. Did I mention the cookies? I even like shopping for my wife’s gifts. Sometimes. And the relatives? Ah, yeah. It’s nice to see them. For a few hours. But stay at my house? Let’s not get carried away. Would you be happy if your relative’s St. Bernard slobbered all over everything? Would you be happy if your relatives busted your couch? Would you be happy if your relatives caught the curtains on fire? I’d probably deal with everything better if I didn’t have a condition doctors refer to as LTL. Actually, I just made that up and it has nothing to do with your cholesterol. That’s LDL. LTL is Low Tolerance Level. In other words,

it doesn’t take much to put me over the edge. Spill red wine on the carpet and I won’t be happy. Retell the same old stories year after year and my patience starts to wear thin. Be rude and obnoxious and you can sleep in the garage. My mother would always say, “You can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family.” Too bad. With my wife’s assistance, and additional therapy, I’ll get through it. I hope. And when it’s finally time for them to go back to wherever it is they came from, I’ll look out the window with a big smile on my face and shout with glee, “They’re gone!” Ahhhhhhhhhh! Safe for another year. As a precaution, the author’s doctor prescribed high blood pressure meds for a while. If that doesn’t work, he suggested scotch and bourbon. – kevinengle456@comcast.net The Best of Engle’s Angle is available online or pick up a signed copy at a local bookstore.

employ haustoria to exploit their hosts’ vascular tissues and do little to no photosynthesis of their own. While many parasitic plants spread to new hosts with the help of animals or the wind, dwarf mistletoe spreads from treetop to treetop using high-velocity projectile seeds! Yes, this plant actually explodes bullet-shaped seeds onto new hosts. Dwarf mistletoe fruits each house a single seed covered in a sticky substance. As the fruit matures, pressure builds up inside and causes the thick skin to rupture, shooting the seed away from the plant at speeds of up to 56 mph! The sticky covering helps the seed attach to the surface on which it landed, ideally (for the parasite) the branch of a nearby conifer.

Dodder (Cuscate) has many varieties, with California, Golden, and Salt Marsh Dodder being the most common species in the United States. They grow in leafless vines, often a yellow color, all over the host tree. They usually have a tangled hair-like appearance as well, and some species grow small blooms. Just like mistletoe, Dodder grows into the tree using rootlike apparatuses called haustoria. These haustoria allow the parasitic plant to devour nutrients that the tree would otherwise use to grow or stay healthy, so the tree will weaken. Dodder is especially aggressive, and it will feed on the tree until it dies. Dodder also grows toward other healthy plants in your garden and can latch onto them for more nutrients. Your Pal in the Trees, – Stewart The Front Royal/Warren County Tree Steward program began in 1997 with volunteers dedicated to improving the health of trees by providing educational programs, tree planting and care demonstrations, and tree maintenance throughout the community. come the company to Virginia.” Silent Falcon UAS Technologies manufactures patent-pending, state-of-the-art unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) components and sensors for security, military, and commercial markets, including oil and gas and pipeline inspections, power utility inspections, large-scale agriculture, natural resource management, security/ISR, public safety, and mapping/surveying. Silent Falcon is the only solar electric UAS to provide long endurance and range, silent operations, and an open interface payload bay, accommodating a wide variety of payloads that are also quick and easy to change. Silent Falcon’s decision to locate in Virginia coincides with a significant expansion of the service portion of the company’s business, which focuses on data collection, specifically for runway inspections at airports. “We’re proud to partner with companies like Silent Falcon UAS Technologies, which support industry growth and high quality job creation in the Commonwealth,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Brian Ball. “The unmanned systems sector is rapidly evolving, and Virginia’s top-ranked education system, combined with our research and development assets, will provide the company with a strong foundation for success. We thank Silent Falcon for creating 249 high-tech jobs in Warren County, and look forward to building a lasting partnership.” Randolph-Macon Academy’s Unmanned Systems Lab (R-MA) will partner with Silent Falcon as

part of its pre-professional pathway initiative through the R-MA drone program, which provides students with the tools and reallife experience to leverage the potential of unmanned technology in a range of career fields. Sheriff ’s deputy involved in crash while responding to call A Frederick County Sheriff ’s Office Deputy was involved in a two-vehicle crash on the evening of Saturday, December 5th that resulted in both drivers being transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment and ob-

servation. At approximately 8:20 pm, Sgt. S.D. Gregory was operating his county-issued 2019 Ford Explorer Westbound on Route 50 West (Northwestern Pike) in the area of Hayfield Road while responding to a report of a missing person at the Cove Campgrounds in Gore, Va. At this time a 2015 Lexus passenger vehicle, being operated by Sherry Johnson of Winchester, attempted to cross from South to North Hayfield Road using the provided crossover. The crossover is controlled by a posted stop sign preventing vehicles from attempting to go from shoulder to shoulder in one movement. Preliminary investigation shows that Johnson did not stop at that posted sign and pulled out in front of Gregory where she was struck in the passenger side of her vehicle. As a result of the impact, the Ford SUV ended up on it’s driver’s side in the main travel lane of Northwestern Pike just West of N. Hayfield Road while the Lexus came to final rest further West and off the right shoulder of the roadway. Sgt. Gregory was unable to extricate himself from the vehicle, due to the vehicle damage and its positioning. Several motorists, who had stopped after observing the crash, were able to assist Sgt. Gregory and eventually freed him from the vehicle. Sgt. Gregory was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Mrs. Johnson was also transported to the medical center for examination and evaluation.

Artists Melissa Ichiuji and Chris Stephens took eight days to complete the 2,100 square foot mural. By Tom Sayre Warren/Frederick County Report Warren County residents Melissa Ichiuji and her husband Doug own the building at the intersection of Cloud and East Main Street in Front Royal where a beautiful 2,100 square foot mural was recently painted on their building’s east side. Ichiuji has big plans for the building, stating, “There is going to be an art gallery here,” exhibiting her sculptures and also those of visiting artists. “I am an artist and I work in the back in my art studio and I am extending it to a gallery in

the front,” she said. Ichiuji estimates that they have owned the building for about 4 years. She explained that, “We wanted to paint a scene that was specific to this area,” and something that can bring us together. Local artist Chris Stephens was also involved with creating the mural. When asked how Stephens got involved in helping paint the mural, he said, “We have been friends and I am a landscape painter.” Adding, “And she could use my help,” with a good chuckle. – tom@areaguides.com

Tis the season for thieves The Front Royal Police Department would like to remind citizens to always lock their vehicles, especially as we are entering the holiday season. We have seen a recent increase in thefts from motor vehicles, which is not unusual during this time of year, and urge everyone to take extra precautions to minimize their chances of becoming a victim. Vehicle break-ins are a crime of opportunity and thieves often check door handles to find unlocked cars and look through windows for anything of value that is easily visible. To prevent broken windows and additional damage to your vehicle, make sure to move coats, bags, purses, and other valuables into the trunk. When it comes to deterring thieves, the easiest steps you can take are locking up and removing valuables. The Front Royal Police Department would also like to remind citizens of the scams and fraudulent calls they may receive. We have been made aware of citizens allegedly receiving calls from Amazon and Apple. If you receive an unexpected call or message about

Battle of Great Bridge On 5 December, the Colonel James Wood II Chapter of the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) participated in a virtual commemoration of the Battle of Great Bridge. This commemoration was the 10th Annual Great Bridge Wreath Laying, sponsored by the Great Bridge Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Norfolk SAR. This battle was fought on 9 December, 1775. This came about after the British under Virginia’s Royal Governor, John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore had ordered Royal Marines to seize the gunpowder stores of Williamsburg. This caused militia companies from surrounding counties to converge on Williamsburg. Lord Dunmore fled to Norfolk and began raising an

Army from Tory militias which was joined by the British 14th Regiment of Foot. At that time, the main route to Norfolk was across the Great Bridge over the Elizabeth River. This bridge was a narrow 100-150 foot span that was bordered on both sides by the Great Dismal Swamp, only accessible by narrow causeways on both the north and south sides. On 7 December, Patriot forces arrived on the south side. By the night of the 8 December, these forces commanded by Colonel William Woodford had grown to roughly 900 men. Lord Dunmore decided to drive the colonial forces back and on the morning of 9 December, sent his forces to attack the patriots. The British advanced six men abreast and funneled into the causeway where they were met with a withering fire. The battle lasted less than an hour. When it was over, the British had lost more than 100 men killed and wounded. Only one of the Patriots was wounded. That night, the British abandoned their encampment and within a few days, the colonists entered Norfolk. This battle fought six months before the nation declared its independence, marked an important victory for the untried American military units over the British. They forced the British to evacuate Norfolk, the richest commercial center in Virginia and contributed to the withdrawal from Virginia by the British. They did not return to Virginia until May 1779. This allowed Virginia to serve as a major resource for materials and men to the Colonial cause, which contributed greatly to keeping the war effort alive. Participating in

this virtual event from the Colonel James Wood II Chapter were President Marc Robinson, Vice President Chip Daniel, Dale Corey, Sean Carrigan, Paul Christensen, Don Dusenbury, Larry Johnson, Art LaFlam, Nathan Poe and Jim Simmons. Also involved from the SAR were the National President General Jack Manning, Virginia State President William Schwetke, Culpeper Minutemen Chapter President Charles Jameson, Colonel William Grayson Chapter President Mike Weyler, Virginia State Color Guard Commander Ken Bonner as well as representatives from six State Societies and 19 Chapters. In addition, participation included the Daughters of the American Revolution with six State representatives, 21 Chapters and representatives from the Children of the American Revolution.

REC bucket trucks brings cheer to downtown Front Royal Rappahannock Electric Cooperative’s (REC) bright yellow, “Big Foot” bucket truck was not in its usual environment on Dec. 5. Normally the truck faces the rigorous mountain areas as it works to help build REC’s electric system. Instead, this past weekend it was cleaned and decorated for the Front Royal Christmas Parade. Scott Rickets and Jennifer Cox, employees from REC’s Blue Ridge office in Front Royal, decorated the bucket truck with lots of festive cheer. And REC lineman Troy Jenkins, greeted parade goers as he drove through the parade route to the delight of many in attendance.

By Mark Gunderman The approximately 60 nesting pairs of Purple Martins leave the Autumn Glen HOA in Stephens City by mid-August and migrate to their winter quarters in Brazil. Every October, the Autumn Glen volunteer

Bird Management Team removes the 10 bird condominiums from their 15 foot aluminum poles on the HOA’s beautifully landscaped 52 acres and the houses are meticulously cleaned, tarped and stored for the winter. Martins breed in Canada, the United States and Mexico and then winter in Brazil. Most adults

do not seek new breeding sites but will return to the exact same site from the previous year. Yearling Martins will typically colonize new breeding sites. The older adult Martins (called scouts) will begin to return to their Stephens City nesting sites in late March. – gunderman2001@aol.com
