Survey focuses on risk behavior in youth More than 3000 youth participate WINCHESTER, Va — The Lord Fairfax Health District (LFHD) cares about the health of young people in the district, and they want to help them resist engaging in behavior that may harm their health. To help focus efforts, the LFHD surveyed 1,702 eighth-graders and 1,492 11thgraders in the Clarke County, Frederick County, Page County,
Warren County, and Winchester City school divisions. In the fall of 2012, the students took the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), which was created by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Thousands of students in almost every state have participated in this survey. This is the first year LFHD, in conjunction with the schools, has adminis-

healthy dietary behaviors; inadequate physical activity; and prevalence of obesity and asthma. Parents were able to opt-out their student if they did not want to participate, and all answers were anonymous. The project illustrates that the health department and the schools consider the safety and wellness of the community’s youth a priority. Dr. Charles Devine, LFHD health director said, “LFHD is committed to more collaboration with the schools, parents, and other key community partners. Together, we will focus on reducing risk behaviors identified in the survey that may be affecting youth in our community through prevention programs and educational initiatives. Because this is the first year of the survey, the data
will be useful to provide a baseline to compare to future results. It will help guide our services, enable us to seek grants for new programs, and allow us to measure our progress in the future.” The LFHD, the schools and community partner organizations are already working together to develop programs to improve students’ health and combat risk behaviors. Examples of programs already in place include the Abstinence Education Program and the 95210 initiative, which provides education on nutrition and exercise for a healthier lifestyle. For more information on the YRBS, visit the CDC’s website at http://www. cdc.gov/healthyyouth/yrbs/. Results of the LFHD survey are posted at http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/LHD/LordFairfax/YRBS/.
Shenandoah Hosts Virginia Private College Week What makes Virginia higher education institutions stand out from others across the nation? Prospective college students will find out during Virginia Private College Week 2013, slated for Monday, July 29, through Saturday, Aug. 3. Shenandoah University will once again welcome hundreds of potential students and their families during the week, giving campus tours twice each weekday and a tour on Saturday. Students who visit at least three of the 24 participating member schools of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) will receive three application fee waivers. Students may use the waivers to apply to any three participating CICV colleges for free. The member schools will host daily programs for rising high school seniors (Class of 2014) and juniors (Class of 2015), and these students will learn about the quality and affordability of private colleges. Private colleges distinguish themselves from many state universities by offering small classes and personal attention from faculty. Most have generous financial aid and scholarship programs. Virginia Private College Week tours at Shenandoah University begin each day at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Brandt Student Center. On Saturday, Aug. 3, only one tour will be given, beginning at 9 a.m. Each tour of main campus includes a presentation by the Office of Admissions. For more information about Shenandoah University’s participation in Virginia Private College Week, contact the Office of Admissions at 800/432-2266 or admit@su.edu. Register athttp://www.admissions. su.edu/admissions/visit-shenandoah/open-houses/virginia-private-college-week-visits/. Walk-ins are welcome, too. For more information about Virginia Private College Week, visit www. vaprivatecolleges.org. those in each service standing for their song. Lewis Ewing, national director of the Korean War Veterans Association, insisted that “we won that war. Korea is not the forgotten war; it is the forgotten victory.” In introducing Major General Lee Seo Young, the defense attaché at the South Korean Embassy, Ewing pointed out that Lee told a four star general to wait to meet with him until after the ceremony. Lee spoke about the sixty year alliance between our two countries, and how the Americans and others came to the defense of the South Korean people, even though they did not know the South Korean people. “Without your sacrifice, we would be in the same place as North Korea.” The keynote address was given by David Mills, a POW and Outpost Harry Survivor. Mills was shot nine times, including two times in the head. While a POW, Mills received no medical attention. He talked of the life of a POW and the day the U.S. planes stopped flying over their POW camp. The POWs knew something was happening, but they did not know what for days. When the POWs were finally freed, Mills felt “joy, thrill, release, humbleness; it was the happiest day of the first seventeen years of my life.” Mills choked up as he thanked those in attendance for saving the lives of the POWs, including James Berry and Edmund L. Reel who were in the audience. To the gathered Korean veterans he said “you know

Those names were read as part of the ceremony. Granite blocks with boots and inscribed bricks lead to the memorial. A wreath was laid at the base of the memorial, accompanied by a bagpiper. The gun salute and taps were provided by the Honor Guard of VFW Post 2123.

Not a merger: Valley Health & Inova form ‘alliance’ Partnership of separate but equal entities in evolving health care landscape
By Roger Bianchini Frederick County Report The preface from the Valley Health public relations department and the joint press release noted that whatever it was being announced between Valley Health and Inova on July 2 was neither a merger, nor an acquisition, but rather “an alliance.” Okay, wondering exactly what that meant for the “non-profit” Valley Health Systems with which I had a very recent and positive health care experience, I read on. The press release explained the
non-merger was an effort to better position the two health care entities “to operate, compete and succeed together” but legally still as separate entities in “a dynamic and changing environment.” “In this alliance, we have two strong health systems planning for the future and collaborating in areas that are important to the future of healthcare. The winds of change are strong, and this alliance allows our two organizations an opportunity to collaborate … do more, in a shorter period of time and at less cost, than would have been possible if pursued alone,” Valley Health

System President and CEO Mark H. Merrill stated in a July 2 press release. Inova President and COO Mark Stauder added, “A critical element of the ‘new normal’ in health care is partnership. Together, Inova and Valley Health System offer creativity, innovation, and experience with a passion to improve the health of the diverse communities we serve now and in the generation to come.” Two key consequences, one for employees of the two systems – their jobs; the other for corporate board members – their status; were also addressed: “No Valley Health or Inova jobs are expected to be impacted as a result of the alliance. Each entity will remain separate and independently governed, supporting their respective local communities as per the mission of Inova and Valley Health System. Neither entity will have representation on the other system’s board,” the release states. “The plan, as approved by the Valley Health Board of Trustees and the Inova Health System Foundation Board, leverages the clinical excellence and innovation of each to improve patient care by implementing electronic medical records software at Valley Health;
en
pursuing clinical integration with respect to cardiovascular services, neurosciences, orthopedics, cancer care, trauma, women’s and infant’s and other services as agreed; and collaborating on research projects and clinical trials. In addition, by providing mutual access not only to services but physicians and managed care programs, each will be better positioned to succeed in meeting the needs of their respective communities,” the release adds. By pooling our collective volumes – everything from pharmaceuticals to sutures to orthopedic implants – we should be able to negotiate better contracts with our suppliers which will help us reduce the growth of supply costs. “In a nutshell, we are able to access a world class information technology platform, improve supply costs through better contracting, collaborate on clinical research trials and work with Inova to identify gaps in our clinical offerings that they may be able to fill. Friday Night LIVE Bands Announced for Final Event
Clockwise from top left: Britani Myers, Creigh Riepe Band, Father’s Honor, Red Sammy, The Last Year, Dangerous Mood. Building off the success of the previous two Friday Night Lives, the Old Town Development Board and Full Circle Marketing are excited for the final installment of the Friday Night Live music series. Friday Night Live has been able to transform the Old Town walking mall into a lively block party that is fun for the whole family. Whether you want to stroll down the walking mall and listen to acoustical musical players or pay and enter one of the music venues Friday Night Live has something for anyone. Headlining the Hable stage sponsored by 105.5 The Bone is The Last Year, a modern rock band based in Baltimore, Md.
YOU!
The Last Year combines a varied mix of alternative rock and new wave music to create an unfor-
gettable sound. Supporting The Last Year is Winchester’s own Father’s Honor. Father’s Honor fuses various styles and elements of country, rock and roll, punk, indie and alternative to create a truly unique sound, they recently performed at Winchester’s Rockin’ Independence Eve event. Warming up the crowd will be the Americana rock band, Red Sammy, form Baltimore, Md. Headlining the Cork Street stage sponsored by Q102 is country artist Creigh Riepe from Nashville, Tn. Creigh competed in the CMA Music Festival’s Rising Star Contest, and won first place for Best Original Selection with his self-written tune, “We Can’t Love.” He took home the grand prize in the 2009 Dierks Bentley MySpace vocal competition. Creigh also competed on ABC’s USA Karaoke Champion making it all the way to the semifinals. Creigh will be preceded by country singer, Britani Myers, a Winchester native. Myers opened up for Leann Rimes at the 4th Annual Patsy Cline Classic at the Patsy Cline Theatre in Winchester, VA. Opening up the Cork Street stage is an acoustic

folk duo Dangerous Mood, from Winchester. In addition to these two music venues, the rest of the Old Town mall will feature a variety of street performers for patrons to enjoy. “I think this final Friday Night Live is going to be a huge event and a great end of summer block party!” said Dario Savarese, President of Full Circle Marketing. “This show is going to be a lot of fun for people who enjoy country and rock,” said booking agent Pete Buchbauer. “Our
performers on Cork St. are a huge group of up and comers, from the award winning Creigh Riepe to the great local talents of Britani Myers and Dangerous Mood. On Hable Lot our rock bands all bring a unique and different sound that I think the people around here will really enjoy. The Last Year is in the middle of a huge media push and put on one heck of a live show.” Tickets for the event are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Shenandoah Valley quilt exhibition
The Kernstown Battlefield Association is pleased to announce the exhibition of a unique collection of Shenandoah Valley pieced quilts never previously seen by anyone outside the owner’s family. These special quilts date from 1840 to 1890 and will be on display at the Kernstown Battlefield Association’s Activities Center located at 610 Battle Park Drive, Winchester, Virginia. Exhibition dates are Saturday August 24 and Sunday August 25, 2013 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. The quilt collection was begun five generations ago in the northern Shenandoah Valley, now WV, by Mary Linganfelter and continued its growth through daughter Sarah Unger, granddaughter Gay Fuss, greatgranddaughter Elizabeth Powers and now her great-great granddaughter Mary Ryan and it still resides here in the Shenandoah Valley. We are delighted that Mrs. Ryan has allowed this unique collection to be exhibited to the public at the historic Kernstown Battlefield. The exhibit will be open to the public with an admission fee of $5.00 per person. Children under 10 are free. All proceeds will go to the Kernstown Battlefield Preservation fund. A Tea Shoppe in the Activities Center will offer sweets and tea for sale and will be hosted by KBA volunteers. The adjacent KBA Visitor Center and gift shop will be open to visitors and tours of the antebellum Pritchard House are included in the entry fee.

that isŠguaranteed to keep 2013 King Features Synd.,readers Inc. on the edge of their seats. It began on an icy night in October 1984. A small plane carrying nine passengers departed the High Prairie airport in Alberta. Despite the dicey weather, the 24-year-old rookie pilot, Erik Vogel, was under pressure to complete the flight. Aboard was Carol’s father, Larry Shaben, Canada’s first Muslim Cabinet Minister. The passengers also included Constable Scott Deschamps and Paul Archbault, his prisoner who was shackled and in custody. Against regulations, Deschamps removed the handcuffs from his prisoner shortly before the ill-fated flight departed. Vogel was inexperienced, behind schedule and was concerned about the snow blowing across the tarmac. His job was on the line, and despite not having a co-pilot, he agreed to do the flight. About an hour after takeoff, the plane went down in the icy darkness. Through interviews with the survivors and her retelling and exploration of the events of that night, Shaben offers a rare insight into the minds and hearts of the four men who survived against insurmountable odds. For Shaben, the book was necessary so that she could make sense of the ordeal the survivors faced and ultimately make peace with her father. Š 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

This deal occurred in a pair championship. The contract at every table was three notrump, and in each case declarer failed to make it. However, subsequent analysis showed that the contract should have been made. The play was fairly uniform at the various tables. West led a heart, and declarer won East’s jack with the queen. After cashing four club tricks, declarer led either a spade or a diamond. West took the ace of whichever suit was led and returned the king of hearts.
South could now have cashed eight tricks, but at some tables, when he attempted to establish a ninth trick, West took his other ace and ran his hearts to put the contract down two. All the plays seem so normal that it is difficult to see where declarer went wrong. But the fact is that each declarer missed an opportunity to make the contract. The winning play is to allow East to win the opening heart lead with the jack! Once South does this, the contract cannot be stopped. Let’s assume East returns a diamond. West takes the ace, but what can he do next? If he returns a heart, declarer scores the queen and finishes with 10 tricks; with any other return, South drives out the spade ace and winds up with nine tricks. It can be argued that ducking the jack of hearts is easy to do when all 52 cards are in view, but actually the play can be supported by simple logic. It is certainly reasonable to credit West with both missing aces as well as a six-card suit for his vulnerable overcall. Furthermore, the six-card suit must be assumed since the contract cannot be made if West has only five hearts (and both aces), whether or not declarer wins the first heart. All indications thus point clearly to ducking the jack of hearts at trick one.

Adjusting a Pilot Light
Q:
I have an older gas furnace in my home upstairs that works very well, but I haven’t had it maintained it in a few years. I think the pilot light looks weak, but there’s no setting for a higher flame. How can I improve the pilot light flame? — Nancy in Buffalo, N.Y. There is a way to control the height of the pilot light flame. Next to the “Pilot indicator on the furnace’s control switch, there is a small screw located near the pilot light-thermocouple assembly. I’ll typically shine a small flashlight and use a magnifying glass to read the imprinted type on the control housing to make sure that’s the right screw. With the pilot light burning, use a Phillips-head screwdriver to carefully turn the screw one way and then the other, watching the pilot light to see if it gets stronger or weaker. The flame should be angling toward a nearby object that looks like a small vertical pipe: This is called the thermocouple, an important safety device. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple detects it and shuts the valve supplying gas to the pilot. The pilot flame should touch the thermocouple at a specific level. If the flame is blue and weak, and barely reaches the thermocouple, it needs to be stronger. If it extends well above the thermocouple, it’s too strong. If the flame covers the top of the thermocouple and burns steadily with a yellow tip, that’s just about right. What if the pilot light won’t stay —30—

lighted? If the assembly looks OK, turn off the gas supply at the nearest valve and try heating the thermocouple using a match for about 30 seconds to a minute. Then relight the pilot. If that doesn’t work, replace the thermocouple by carefully unscrewing it from the control housing using an open-ended wrench, being careful not to ding or bend the supply pipe or the pilot-light assembly. Install a new thermocouple by screwing it in, heating it up a bit, and then lighting the pilot. Keep in mind that this task can be a little frustrating, because you’re almost always working in a cramped, hard-to-access spot. Be patient and take frequent breaks if necessary, rather than compromise safety or damage the unit. Make sure you know exactly where the main shutoffs for your home’s gas, water and electrical supply are located, and that you know how to turn them off in an emergency.
