We’ve been trekking for the past 50 years. Hopefully we will never get there.” Åke Nordin – Founder of Fjällräven

" Fifty years ago, I decided

to make nature more accessible to more people. We have never strayed from this goal and we are only at the beginning of our journey. Welcome to another 50 years of quality time." Åke Nordin, founder of Fjällräven

Following the heavy urbanisation that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s, people began to find their way back to nature using outdoor equipment from Fjällräven.

From the start, the company has followed the proud tradition of testing equipment in its proper environment.

The backpack frame, which introduced support principles that are still used today, was the start of Åke›s company, Fjällräven, in 1960.

50 YEARS OF NATURAL SCIENCE

FJÄLLRÄVEN NOW AND THEN

Mountain trekking. Together with the vacation reform of the 1960s and inspiration from Friluftsfämjandet and the SwedishTourist Association, Fjällräven's equipment fuelled a folk movement.

Wilderness equipment. With the introduction of revolutionary backpack frames in aluminium, condensation-free tents and a completely new standard for outdoor clothing, people could head out into nature. without needing to carry heavy packs or getting wet and cold.

" Making nature more enjoyable is

something I have worked with for 50 years now, and a lot has happened during this time. From my small cellar in Örnsköldsvik and a wooden backpack frame, we have expanded to all corners of the world. But our proud tradition of developing new, innovative solutions for spending time outdoors remains the same. "

Åke Nordin, founder of Fjällräven

FJÄLLRÄVEN NOW AND THEN

ANOTHER 50 YEARS 50 YEARS OF QUALITY TIME A love of the outdoors has always been the needle in my inner compass. I feel best when I am out in nature. Waking up at the edge of a mirrored lake with my friends. Feeling the rosy chill on my cheeks after a full day cross-country skiing. Hearing my own breath during a difficult trek or the relaxing sound of a gurgling brook.   Even as a young boy, my love of the outdoors encouraged me to improve and develop my own outdoor equipment. I was not very happy with the backpacks that were available back then. They always ended up as small, uncomfortable lumps down at the small of my back. When I was 14, I put together a wooden frame with a removable bag, narrow at the bottom and broad at the top. The frame improved the distribution of weight across my back. It was not only more comfortable to carry, I could carry a heavier pack, too.   This backpack frame, the principles of which still apply today, was the start of my company Fjällräven, which I founded ten years later in 1960. Since then, my love for the outdoors has continued to be an inspiration. New types of backpacks, revolutionary sleeping bags and condensationfree, lightweight tents have helped the company grow.   Using tent material that was too heavy for my lightweight tent, I sewed Fjällräven's first outdoor clothing. It was unlike anything on the market. I named the fabric G-1000; the G stands for a successful expedition to Greenland in 1966. Today G-1000 is one of the outdoor world's most durable and adaptable materials.   Many people think that Fjällräven sparked an entire folk movement. People could suddenly head out into nature without having to carry heavy packs and without needing to get wet and cold. Nature became, quite simply, more accessible. Making nature more enjoyable is something I have worked with for 50 years now. And a lot has happened during this time. From my small cel-

lar in Örnsköldsvik and a wooden backpack frame, we have expanded to all corners of the world. But our proud tradition of developing new, innovative solutions for spending time outdoors remains the same.   We are constantly out into nature ourselves, not just for fun but to find inspiration for and test new solutions. We develop prototypes that are tested in textile laboratories and by outdoor enthusiasts. During the tests, the products are exposed to more difficult conditions in a short period of time that what they would ever experience during years of practical use.   Naturally, we also research, compile and evaluate the experiences of others. Since1965, we have handed out the Golden Fox award. Golden Foxes are people who, through extensive accomplishments on expeditions and considerable knowledge about equipment, have helped promote the development of outdoor equipment. The first Golden Fox was Per-Åke Sjöman, one of the members of the 1966 Greenland expedition and the father of many basic principles of outdoor life.   I am proud to lead a company that still has a complete focus on functional, durable outdoor equipment. For all types of weather and climate zones. For both experienced arctic foxes and curious beginners.   The challenges we face today are the same as when we started. To find innovative, smart solutions for outdoor equipment. To maintain and awaken a love of nature in more people. To act responsibly toward the nature we love to spend time in.   After 50 years, the needle in our compass is pointing in the same direction.

" Nature became,

quite simply, more accessible "

ÅKE NORDIN, founder of Fjällräven

To continue on our journey, we have identified three areas that we should continue to focus upon. First and foremost, we will continue to develop durable, functional and timeless outdoor equipment. We will also continue to act responsibly toward other humans, animals and nature. Finally, we will help more people develop a love of nature. By following these three goals, we hope to be able to bring you another 50 years of Quality Time.

DEVELOP DURABLE, TIMELESS AND FUNCTIONAL EQUIPMENT

ACT RESPONSIBLY TOWARD OTHER HUMANS, ANIMALS AND NATURE.

DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN AN INTEREST IN OUTDOOR LIFE

The whole idea behind Fjällräven is to offer functional equipment for more - and more comfortable - trips into the outdoors. A prerequisite for this is that we continue to find innovative, smart solutions, improve material, decrease weight and increase the freedom of movement in our clothing and equipment. Our equipment does not follow fleeting trends. All of our products stand for functionality and durability for years to come. Read more about our product development on pages 10-13.

For us, Quality Time is not just about products and a love of the outdoors. It is about showing consideration toward other humans, animals and nature. We work constantly to be better at this. For us, Quality Time is an ongoing process that is intertwined with everything we do - from the production of sustainable equipment, choice of material and climate compensation to sponsorship and donations. You will find more information on pages 72-75.

As early as the 1970s, we brought curious beginners out into the wilderness through our Fjällräven weeks at Riksgränsen. Over the years we have introduced tens of thousands of people to different types of adventures. And we intend to continue to help people develop a love of nature. Fjällräven Classic and Halv Classic are just two examples of folk festivals in the world's most beautiful environments. You will find more information on pages 76-79.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Passion. From both our own experiences and the experiences of others, we create revolutionary products that will make it easier for you, and us, to spend time outdoors.

Details. We find them the most interesting. Both big and small functional elements that make a huge difference for your experience.

" A lot has happened in 50 years, but our

proud tradition of product development has remained the same. Only equipment with smart functions and long durability carry the Fjällräven logo. Such a high standard may take the time it needs. " 10

11

The Martindale test. Wool is rubbed again and again with quite a bit of force against our fabrics. Depending on the durability of our fabrics, this process can continue for hours. Or, in the case of G-1000, for days.

THE SECRET BEHIND YOUR OUTDOOR FAVOURITES It has always been a proud tradition at Fjällräven - since the day the company was founded - to develop and test equipment in the proper environment and guarantee that our equipment will not let you down when you are using it in the wild. An excerpt from our product catalogue in 1967 perfectly captures our proud tradition. "This tent was developed in consultation with specialists from the 1966 Greenland expedition and tested during the extreme conditions of the expedition. Based on their feedback, we have now begun to manufacture the double-wall TERMO tent." The text is referring to our revolutionary condensation-free tent, Termo G-66, an abbreviation for Greenland 1966. Thanks to the lessons learned during the expedition to Greenland in 1966 to research glaciers, the development process for our products became a success. But we would like to add that our equipment was being tested as early as 1964 on Nordic expeditions to the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, Svartisen and Spitsbergen.

12

Our 50-year tradition lives on This year marks 50 years since Fjällräven began to introduce its revolutionary ideas to the market. Even though we have undergone many changes over the years, we have still preserved our method of working. We personally head out into nature on our own adventures so we can discover innovative, smart solutions, improve our fabrics, decrease the weight of our packs and increase mobility when using our clothes and equipment.   We use feedback from our own experiences - and the experiences of others - to sketch ideas for new equipment and produce a prototype. These prototypes are tested once, tested twice and then tested a third time for good measure. Machines in textile laboratories rip, pull and rub our products. Test groups hit the trails to determine if the solutions work the way they are intended. In nature, equipment is exposed to more wear and tear in a few months than it would ever see during years of regular use. Made to last for a long, long time We are constantly developing new solutions that make it

Survival training. In addition to our own trips, we regularly disappear into the wilderness to learn more about ourselves, about nature and to find inspiration for new products.

Product tests in nature. Product tests in nature expose our trousers to more wear and tear in a few months than they would ever see during years of practical use.

" You could say that the way we develop products is similar to the evolution of nature "

easier for you to spend time in nature. But what we often discover is that the functions in our existing lines of clothes and equipment still work perfectly. These products will remain in our selection in coming seasons. For example, our Vidda trousers have been a part of our collection for almost ten years and are still a favourite for more strenuous trips into nature.   We think this is proof of how good our products are. What could be better for the environment than a durable product? A product that is passed down from one generation to the next has hardly any impact on the environment compared to buying new. This is why we do not follow fleeting trends when we develop our products or use colours that are popular one year but then disappear completely the following year. We would rather represent functionality and durability for years to come. New favourites We have noticed that more and more people are looking for lighter products with more mobility. With this in mind, we recently developed our Alta and Sarek trousers. Durable trousers with a built-in stretch function behind the double

layers of fabric over the knee. This year we are also introducing our Kalfjäll and Tundra trousers for those of you who prioritise low weight and exceptional mobility. Our product development strategy is similar to that of the evolution of nature - the strongest survive at the same time as new, adapted products are added. Products that make your nature experiences more enjoyable. If we can give you a more enjoyable stay in nature, we will be proud and happy.

Ideas and comments If you are satisfied with your equipment, feel free to tell your friends. If you are not satisfied or have suggestions for improvements, feel free to tell us. You can follow what we are doing via our website, www.fjallraven.com. Your opinions and experiences are valuable to us, so we would greatly appreciate it if you visit our page and tell us what you think. We may be proud of our technical knowledge and product development, but we know that we can always be better. 13

Curiosity. As early as 1979, Fjällräven began taking curious beginners out into the wilderness. With the slogan ”If you know nothing about the mountains – but want to!”, Fjällräven Weeks encouraged more people to discover the world on top of the Swedish mountains.

Experience. With unfailing enthusiasm, we have spent the last 50 years constructing and improving backpacks, tents and sleeping bags for different types of purposes, so you can get more out of your experiences.

" I was impressed by the backpack he

was carrying. It had a frame that made it possible to carry significantly heavier packs than we were used to. I had never seen anything like it before. " Nils Olsson Sarri, Reindeer herder

14

15

BACKPACKS

AN IDEA THAT CARRIED WEIGHT " The shape of the frame distributed the weight more

efficiently across his entire back and increased the ventilation between his back and the backpack " The combination of Fjällräven's Expedition pack attached to the Expedition frame quickly became popular. The smaller pack was regularly used for climbing. In order to get the most out of the frame, the pack could be removed in order to carry logs and containers filled with water. Outdoor enthusiasts could also use their own backpacks with a number of frames and pack bags. In 1965, the Expedition combo in the picture cost SEK 198.

Reindeer herder Nils Olsson Sarri, who is now 80 years old, remembers how impressed he was in the 1950s by the new frame. The frame that impressed him was made by a 14-year-old boy named Åke Nordin.   He had made the backpack for a trek to Dikanäs, a small village in the high mountains of the Västerbotten region, during the summer of 1950. Back then, most backpacks resembled misshapen pears. When the backpacks were fully packed, trekkers had to walk almost bent in half in order to avoid falling backwards from the weight. The fact that the heavy pack rested directly against their backs also meant their shirts became soaked with sweat, which quickly turned cold when the weather changed. Young Nordin decided to fix this problem.   He had read that it was best to carry heavy packs high and close to the back. While his friend, LarsOlof, tied flies, Åke went out to the shed behind the Nordin's summer cabin on Ulvön and hammered together a wooden frame. Åke's mother, Gunhild, was the daughter of a tailor and had taught Åke to sew when he was only ten years old. On her Singer pedal sewing machine, he made a backpack from strong cotton fabric that he then attached to the wooden frame using leather straps. He made the support straps from calfskin. The backpack was comfortable to carry. The shape of the frame distributed the weight more efficiently across his entire back and increased the ventilation between his back and backpack. He could also carry heavier packs. Åke filled his backpack with his tent and enough food for himself and his friend. Soon they were sitting on the mail bus headed north.   Up in the mountains, the backpack garnered considerable attention, particularly among the Sami, who spent weeks at a time in the high mountains. They understood the importance of a robust backpack that was comfortable, even when heavy. One of the Sami asked Åke to make a backpack for him. The next time Åke went up to the mountains, the news about his backpack had spread among the reindeer herders. The idea of starting a company that manufactured modern equipment to make life

in the wilderness easier started to take form in young Åke Nordin's mind over the next few years.   Just like his father, fruit trader Karl-Erik Nordin, Åke received his education at Påhlmans Handelsinstitut in Stockholm. While completing his 15-month military service at the new, extremely challenging Parachute Ranger School in Karlsborg, Åke became even more convinced that there was a market for functional, durable outdoor equipment. In his opinion, not even the equipment of the country's most elite unit was adequate.   Ten years after the young Åke built his first backpack, more specifically in May 1960, the fourth issue of the Swedish Tourist Association's magazine landed in the mailboxes of its members across all of Sweden. Tucked beside an advertisement for Jukon's haemorrhoid cream, readers could find a tiny advertisement for a new type of backpack from the newly founded company, Fjällräven. »"Frame LIGHTWEIGHT tested during 3 years of winter and summer mountain treks", says the text and continues, "If you know a Sami or mountain farmer, just ask him how you should carry really heavy packs. Then you will understand the Frame's unbeatable properties." The stamp-size, black and white photographs depict a young man with a military posture carrying an enormous pack on his back. This same picture graces the front of this catalogue. The man in the picture is Åke Nordin.

The picture from Fjällräven's catalogue from 1965 describes the disadvantages of using a traditional backpack. 17

18

You use your legs to carry heavy packs. Not your shoulders. Åke, the founder of Fjällräven made this discovery as a young boy and introduced a wooden frame with leather straps – Fjällräven Trä. He continued to develop his ideas and soon Fjällräven had launched a line of backpacks with a totally new standard. The lightweight material and the revolutionary functions that were new back then are still standard today.

KAJKA

- ergonomic, durable and loaded with functions Kajka - Outdoor Product of the Year 2009

Kajka was named 2009 Product of the Year by the Utemagasinet magazine, Sweden's leading outdoor and adventure magazine. They have pulled and tugged at all of the products they tested in 2009 and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of each product. Finally, they reached a unanimous conclusion - Kajka is one of the best products of 2009. The justification for their decision read as follows: "Kajka's strength and f lexibility with its adjustable length in the back to the width between the shoulder straps means that the support system can properly redistribute the weight on any number of backs. It is a large, modern backpack that is perfect for both travelling and cabin/tent excursions. In addition, it has smart finesses, such as the drying pocking in the bag's bottom section - an inner mesh pocket that can be opened."

Why are there two versions of Kajka?

The arctic fox is facing extinction in the Scandinavian mountains. For almost 20 years, we have worked to save this animal from which we took our name. Our efforts have been successful, but more support is needed. This is why we donate SEK 50 for every sold " Save the Arctic Fox " product so we can do our best to bring the species back from the threat of extinction. The arctic fox, or Alopex Lagopus as it is called in Latin, greatly impressed Fjällräven's founder, Åke Nordin, during his hikes in the mountains. The arctic fox has adapted to life high in the Swedish mountains and has the warmest fur of all predators. Its fuzzy winter fur is extremely useful when winter settles over the Arctic tundra.   Unfortunately, the arctic fox is in acute danger of extinction across Europe. Extreme over-hunting for its fur in the beginning of the 1900s led to a drastic fall in the number of arctic foxes. A dwindling food supply and competition from the red fox are the main reasons the arctic fox population faces extinction today.   "With concentrated efforts, we can double the number of arctic fox," says Anders Angerbjörn, arctic fox 22

researcher at Stockholm University and project manager for SEFALO+ (Saving the Endangered Fennoscandian Alopex), and points out how the measures taken in Helagsfjällen in Jämtland were successful. At Fjällräven, we have worked closely with Angerbjörn since the early 1990s to give more trekkers the wonderful opportunity of meeting a curious arctic fox in the mountains and watching its pups at play in front of their den. You can also help. For every product sold from our "Save the Arctic Fox" line, we will donate SEK 50 to SEFALO+ to stop the arctic fox population from shrinking and increase the chances of the species to recover. You will receive a hardwearing backpack and the arctic fox will be given a chance to survive.

Helags The Helags backpack took its name from the Helags mountain chain that is located in Härjedalen and is one of the few places you can still catch a glimpse of an arctic fox. The population was almost eradicated at the end of the 1900s, but thanks to the intense efforts of SEFALO+ (Saving the Endangered Fennoscandian Alopex), for example by supplementing the food supply, the population has begun to grow. In the summer of 2008, there were fourteen litters in the region. But there is still much to do. Read more about the arctic fox and how you can help at www. fjallraven.com/savethearcticfox

FOR AN ACTIVE OUTDOOR LIFE Spending time outdoors is not always about heading out with your tent and staying out for days at a time. A walk in the woods can be just as relaxing. Or why not spend the night and buy food at one of the Swedish Tourist Association's many mountain cabins? We had these types of trips in mind when we created the Friluft backpack. A breathable, comfortable, durable backpack filled with the functions you need for an active life outdoors.

TENTS

SOME DETAILS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE Your tent is one of your most important pieces of equipment. It provides shelter during storms and a place to recover and rest. If you want to buy a tent that will be used in the backyard occasionally on a clear summer night without wind, most of the tents on the market will work just fine. However, if you want to go a bit further out into nature,

you should invest in a Fjällräven tent. Due to their high quality and many useful functions, our tents are a frequent sight in both the mountains and the archipelago. Below you will find some of the functions, besides the material itself, that make our tents so popular.

GUYLINE

COLOUR CODING

V-BAG

2 mm thick nylon stormlines that are strategically placed around the tent. A smart solution makes it possible to fasten the stormlines with one hand even when wearing gloves.

Different-sized poles are marked with colour coding. The sleeve has the same colour as the correct pole, which makes it easy to match the proper pole with the proper sleeve.

The V-shaped compression bag makes packing simple and keeps your pack small.

NORDIC STYLE

FOXFOOT

FOLDED SEAMS

ALUMINIUM POLES

The outer and inner tents are connected, but can be easily separated if necessary. All vents and door openings are covered with mosquito nets, except Skule.

Adjustable foxfeet make it easy to pitch the tent in all weather conditions.

All of Fjällräven’s tents have folded seams for added strength in hard winds. The cotton-covered synthetic thread swells when it becomes wet, making the seams waterproof.

Aluminium 7075 T9 poles: lightweight poles with elastic silicon cords that can withstand the cold.

TENT REVOLUTION 1964 Tents should be easy to carry, easy to raise and provide protection from Mother Nature's wilder moments. Things that we take for granted today have not always been so selfevident. Back in 1964, Fjällräven revolutionised living in the wilderness with the Termo tent. Today we are continuing to manufacture tents that are highly acclaimed, the most recent of which is Sälka. A product that meets the above requirements and offers many innovative, smart functions.

Termo – the first thermal tent from 1964 In 1964, the Termo tent was introduced on the market. The outer tent was a strong, waterproof polyester and the inner tent a Rutarme polyamide fibre with good ventilation properties. The tent took the market by storm. It created such a sensation that the team behind the Swedish Greenland Expedition in 1966 asked Åke to create a tent just for them. Robert af Klinteberg, a member of the expedition, sent a telegram praising the tent: "The first piece of equipment I have ever seen that is better than the advertisement". Sales of Fjällräven's tent grew exponentially.

" Almost 50 years later we are continuing to develop tents that are highly acclaimed. "

In the early days of tents In the 1960s, the construction of most of the tents on the market consisted of a single wall of cotton and they were extremely heavy. The alternative was a synthetic tent, but these tents either dripped condensation or leaked like a sieve. Fjällräven had already re-designed the backpack and was convinced that there should be better solutions out there, even for tents. After an endless number of sketches and prototypes, Åke Nordin hit upon a solution that was as genius as it was simple. Thanks to the combination of a waterproof outer tent and a ventilated inner tent, moisture was released from the tent's living area, allowing condensation to form instead on the inside of the outer tent. Finally, it was possible to wake up dry and warm. 26

Akka – award-winning tent in 2010 Almost 50 years later, we are continuing to produce tents that receive accolades from around the world because they are easy to carry, have a stable construction but are still user-friendly and are loaded with smart functions. Even our neighbours to the west, the Norwegians, consider Fjällräven's Akka Shape to be the best tent on the market. On the next page, we explain just what it is that makes our tents so popular.

How big should your tent be? Once you have chosen the type of tent that fits your needs best, you need to decide how big your tent should be. Remember, the more space you want to have, the more weight you have to carry. If you are only going to walk short distances, you can choose a bigger tent - both wider and with more headroom. For hiking longer distances, many people choose a lower tent, like the Shape model.

Tunnel tent – low weight and easy to pitch Fjällräven's tunnel tents, such as Akka, Akka Shape and Sälka, offer low weight in relation to living space, thanks to their design. The apse of these tents, i.e. the extra space outside the sleeping area, provides plenty of space for storing and drying your equipment and even preparing meals when the weather is bad. Unlike dome tents, a tunnel tent does not stand by itself, but rather requires stakes and guy lines to stay upright. Our tunnel tents are easy to pitch thanks to several smart functions.

AKKA R/S 4

210

Dome tent – self-standing and easily moved. Akka Dome is a self-standing tent, often called a dome tent. It only needs poles to stand upright and therefore is well suited for terrain where it is difficult to use stakes, e.g. on rocky cliffs. Once you have pitched a dome tent, it is easy to move it. Unlike many other dome tents, all of our dome tents have an apse, which gives you space to store your equipment.

There are two types of Fjällräven tents - tunnel or dome. To find a tent that meets your specific needs, there are a few things you should think about. for example how you intend to use the tent and what size you need.

SLEEPING BAGS

SLEEP WELL We have always tried to help people have sweet dreams when sleeping in the wilderness. In 1965, the Arctic backpack was popular during expeditions and in 1973 the revolutionary Fjällräven HAP (High Alpine Polar) was launched. But, in the 1980s, users started to complain that they felt like "stuffed sausages or mummies" when they were sleeping. The material in sleeping bags had improved over the years, but none of the suppliers appeared to think about the shape. All focus was placed on making the bags smaller and more compact in order to weigh less. It was time for a radical change. We watched while you were sleeping No one sleeps comfortably in a constrictive sleeping bag. When you move, the warm air is pushed upward through the neck opening, making you cold. We studied and photographed people's movements while they were sleeping and confirmed the obvious. People do not lie still while they are sleeping. By superimposing all of our observations and photos, we created a picture of how people move when they sleep. The picture looked like a silhouette and served as a basis for an entire series – our Silhuett sleeping bags. The Silhuett sleeping bags have plenty of space so you can curl up in a comfortable sleeping position. You can easily stretch, turn

around, pull up your legs and basically lie however you want. You do not need to keep your arms close to your body because there is plenty of room for them as well. After many tests, the Silhuett sleeping bag was introduced in 1989. Our product development team has not fallen asleep. Today we have added even more functions to our sleeping bags. For example, you can take your arms out of your sleeping bag to read a book or to improve mobility on milder nights. We also made it possible to open the sleeping bag from both directions in order to provide ventilation for your feet, and we also gave them more space than before. Our sleeping bag series is called Thermo. But the principles are the same. Wherever and however you sleep, you will sleep well and be able to move.

THERMO SLEEPING BAGS

- because it should be comfortable to sleep outside The Thermo sleeping bag is our most popular sleeping bag. It comes in three different temperatures: +/-0, +5 and +10. All three are body-shaped and have synthetic padding. They have extra space for your shoulders and legs for improved mobility and more comfortable sleep. There is also a comfortable head section with an easily accessible drawcord on the inside. Inside the sleeping bag you will find a practical zippered pocket for small items you want to have

Skuleskogen. A majestic area along the High Coast south of Örnsköldsvik where high mountains, ancient forests and sea coast come together to form a landscape that is unparalleled in Swedish nature. The land is still rising and for this reason UNESCO has named the area to its World Heritage list. Greenland Jacket and Greenland Trousers. After becoming a standard companion on expeditions in the 1960s, they quickly became favourites for general use in the outdoors. They demonstrated a durability that was rarely seen and today many of the early versions have been passed to younger generations.

" Who would have thought the

improbable combination of an outdoor entrepreneur, an experienced climber and a fabric too heavy for tents would result in a totally new standard for outdoor equipment. " 34

TREKKING ÄVENTYRSRESOR

BAD WEATHER WENT OUT IN THE SIXTIES After an expedition in Greenland in 1966, there was a general consensus that outdoor clothing needed to be improved. One of the participants of the expedition was Hasse Hellström, a prominent alpinist and Greenland expert. Together, he and Fjällrävens's founder, Åke Nordin, sketched an outdoor jacket that would meet their functionality requirements. The breakthrough was the fabric. A fabric that was too heavy for tents.   Two years later, Fjällräven's first jacket saw the light of day. It was named the Greenland Jacket in honour of the expedition. At first, the jacket was popular among climbers, but it soon became a favourite for everyday wear in the fields and woods. Read more about the Greenland Jacket on page 51.   Today, we continue this proud tradition. We put our heart and soul into our functional clothing. They should accompany you through the years, be put to the test time and time again and never fail your expectations and requirements, so that one day they can become your grandchildren's favourites.   The next time you put on a Fjällräven garment, take the time to look at it closely. You will discover multiple benefits and smart solutions when you feel the fabric, look at the details and inspect the seams.   Feel the fabric. Our garments are made from thread that is extremely tightly woven and spun, which give them superb durability. The thread is also lightweight and quick-drying. In other words, we work with different types of fabric that are made for outdoor life.

Look at the details. A double layer over the knees of trousers and on the undersides of the sleeves of jackets was a distinguishing feature of our Greenland garments. And you will still find this feature on garments that are exposed to extreme wear. The push buttons to close pockets are made of a material that does not rust. The closer you look at your Fjällräven garment, the more practical details you will notice.   Inspect the seams. No matter how well clothes are constructed or how thoroughly fabric is tested, the quality of every garment hangs exclusively on the seams. Take a closer look at the quality of our seams. We do everything possible to make sure a seam will never come undone.   These are just a few of the many details that made our clothes so popular as far back as the 1960s. With functional clothing that released the body's heat, more people could be out in nature without getting wet, cold and expressing themselves with not-so-nice words. More people could experience the wonder of Quality Time, despite the fickle mood swings of Mother Nature. Suddenly, bad weather disappeared.   As you look through this catalogue, you will find many new functions in our garments. You will also notice that Fjällräven's clothing does not follow fleeting trends, but rather stands for durability for years to come. This is how it has always been. And how it will always be.

37

DRESS PROPERLY IN NATURE You demand more from your clothing when you are in nature than during your every day life. If you plan to be out for several days, you will experience many different types of weather, which will test the durability of your equipment. If you follow the multi-layer principle and have the proper equipment, your body will stay warm and dry. Let us tell you more.

WHY YOU NEED THE RIGHT CLOTHES IN NATURE In order to feel comfortable, your body needs to reach something called a 'heat balance'. Heat balance is when your body is producing and releasing equal amounts of heat and your internal temperature is +37 degrees Celsius. Your body strives to always maintain this temperature, for example via blood circulation, sweating or shivering.   At temperatures around +27 degrees Celsius, your body can successfully maintain its heat balance without needing any protection or clothing. However, when the temperature falls below +27, you will need appropriate clothing Your clothes should keep your body heat close, only releasing it as needed, and also keep you dry. The principles are relatively simple. Ideally, only a few, functional quality garments should be worn in layers. Multi-layer principle When you are standing still you need insulation and when you are in motion you need to release excess heat. This is the basic idea behind the multi-layer principle, or "layer-bylayer clothing". Normally there are four layers that, when worn together, raise your comfort level and make your nature experience more enjoyable. The principle is the same no matter what your activity and it should serve as the basis for how you build your wardrobe. The four layers are the base layer, middle layer, outer layer and reinforcement layer. Base layer – Wicks away moisture from your skin to keep it dry and warm. We recommend wool underclothing. On warm summer days, bamboo and polyester t-shirts also 38

work well. Lo and Järv T-shirts on page 66 are two close companions during a trek. Middle layer – Binds moisture from the body and insulates the air. We recommend a sweater or jacket in polyester, bamboo or wool fleece. On page 60 you will find many warm friends. Outer layer – Protects against wind, rain and wear from, for example, branches or bushes. We recommend garments in the durable and versatile functional fabric, G-1000. On pages 40-51, you will find a number of products with which you can share many memories. Reinforcement – Helps you maintain your body heat during bad weather. During the summer, a rain suit with a jacket and trousers is used most often, a poncho and chaps are a good alternative, too. Be wary of low price rain suits that are easily torn by branches and do not offer ventilation. We recommend products with high quality membranes such as Hydratic or GoreTex. On pages 52-57, you will find products that keep you dry when the weather turns bad.   It can also be a good idea to bring along an insulating reinforcement garment. A good down jacket, down vest or warm jacket with synthetic padding can be of use on a trek. Norr Down vest is a good investment. It takes up little space but still provides heat when it is really needed.

The mountain streams that run through the mountains always find new paths to follow. Fast-moving water is fresh water, so go ahead and taste it.

Alta/Sarek.Durable G-1000® with well placed stretch panels for maximum mobility and fit.

OUTER LAYER IN G-1000 OR HYDRATIC? G-1000 + rain suit Many believe that the best alternative is to wear durable G-1000 and then reinforce it with a rain suit as needed.   G-1000 releases excess body heat better than a membrane garment, which is important since you do not want to become too warm. This is even more important during the winter since sweating can lead to a fall in body temperature. It also dries quickly when you are on the move. G-1000 is impregnated with Greenland Wax, a purely natural product, which makes it water and wind resistant.   You can even regulate these functions by adding more or less wax. By applying more wax in the front, you will have better protection from wind and rain and by adding less wax in the back where you carry your pack you will have better ventilation.   In heavy rain, reinforce your clothing with a well ventilated rain suit (jacket and trousers) or our Poncho combined with Chaps.

Hydratic and other membrane garments Many find it uncomfortable and damp to trek in rain trousers. For this reason, you have probably noticed that most trekkers wear G-1000 trousers and pull out the rain trousers as needed.   However, some choose to trek in a jacket with a membrane, such as our Torne and Saana Jackets. The advantage of these garments is that you only need to bring a shell jacket and you are already wearing a rain jacket when the rain arrives. Hydratic and GoreTex are two popular, high-quality membranes in outdoor jackets. They have pores that are thousands of times smaller than a drop of water but hundreds of times larger than a molecule of water. This means that some of the steam from your body is released while water from the outside cannot get in. However, it should be mentioned that this ventilation does not come even close to the level of G-1000. Another disadvantage is that a membrane garment cannot withstand the same tough treatment and wear as G-1000 garments. Sometimes a spark from a fire is all that is needed to burn a hole in a membrane jacket.

G-1000® + Superior ventilation and durability. + Possibility to adapt the garments to the weather using Greenland Wax. - You need rain protection when the rain is pouring down.

HYDRATIC + You do not need to carry an extra jacket to protect yourself from the rain. All you need is your membrane jacket. - Less ventilation and not as durable. - Can be easily damaged by fires. 39

G-1000

G-1000®

DURABLE G-1000 is highly resistant to wear – more than twice as durable as denim. Combined with its low weight, this makes G-1000 garments ideal for travelling and life in the great outdoors.

WATER RESISTANT Greenland Wax impregnation makes G-1000 garments outstandingly resistant to rain and moisture. This means that you can wear them during brief showers. Even if the fabric does get wet, it will dry quickly. WINDPROOF The tightly-spun weave in G-1000 makes it virtually windproof. With impregnation, the fabric offers you complete protection against the biting wind. BREATHABILITY One of G-1000’s greatest characteristics is its superior ventilation, which is particularly useful for active outdoor use. MOSQUITO SAFE The tight G-1000 weave also offers protection against annoying mosquito bites, which makes G-1000 garments the perfect companion in both the forest and the mountains. UV PROTECTION The densely woven fabric provides almost 100% protection from the sun’s alpha and beta rays.

FROM TENT TO JACKET From all of the clothing used when spending time outdoors, trekking trousers probably carry the most memories. The thinning knees and the buttons worn to a shine stand witness to adventures experienced on hiking trails, in the mountains and deep in the forest. The better the hiking clothes, the longer they will last - and the more stories they will tell. How a tent became a jacket In the 1960s, outdoor clothing was not as practical as it is today. This became clear during the Scandinavian Greenland Expedition in 1966, during which Fjällräven tested its revolutionary thermal tent. After the success of the tent and following long discussions with the members of the expedition about their clothing, Åke began to seriously consider manufacturing a jacket and trousers for the outdoors.   One day, just before going on a hike, a roll of extremely durable tent fabric happened to catch Åke's eye. This particular fabric had proven itself to be too heavy to achieve the low weight that he was striving for with his new tents. But, at that particular moment, an idea struck him. With his grandfather's tailoring scissors, he cut out the outline of his own jacket. He switched on the sewing machine and patiently guided the needle slowly across the durable tent fabric.   The year was 1968 - the year the first Fjällräven jacket saw the light of day.

G-1000 is our own functional fabric and a classic ingredient in our clothing. The tight weave of the fabric is impregnated with a thin layer of Greenland Wax. This blend makes the fabric extremely durable while also breathing well and drying quickly. Greenland Wax is a completely natural product made of bee wax and paraffin. The wax makes the garments resistant to water and dirt. By adding different amounts of Greenland Wax, which you can iron in and wash out, you can adapt your garment to current weather conditions. We know that many of you have had your G-1000 garments for more than twenty years. Nobody knows yet how long they can last.

G-1000 and Greenland Wax After testing the fabric in nature, it proved itself to have the properties that Åke felt were missing in his earlier outdoor clothing. It dried quickly and was extremely durable. The only thing that needed improvement was its abil-

ity to repel moisture. While Åke searched his mind for ways to improve the fabric's properties, memories from the ski jump in his hometown of Örnsköldsvik popped into his head. In order to avoid getting wet while waiting for their turn, he and the other jumpers had started doing more than just waxing their skis for a better glide. They even "waxed" the backsides of their trousers to keep their bottoms dry. Was it possible to do something similar with the jacket's fabric? Åke experimented with a mixture of bee wax and paraffin.   He applied the wax mixture to the fabric using heat from his wife Elisabeth's hair dryer. The wax transformed the fabric, making it water resistant, windproof and, if possible, even more durable. One of the world's most hardwearing outdoor fabrics was born. The waxed tent fabric was named G-1000 (G for Greenland). The wax was named Greenland Wax. G-1000, stronger than ever The need for durable expedition clothing accelerated the development of Fjällräven's clothes. Not long after, mountain trekkers, fishers, hunters and everyone else who loved spending time outdoors was able to enjoy their time in nature – regardless of the weather conditions. Today, G-1000 is one of the most popular outdoor fabrics on the market and we are continuing to develop it. There are now three different types of G-1000, Original, Silent and Lite, all of which will be described in more detail on the next page.   So what happened to the jacket Åke made for his hike in the mountains? It arrived in stores in 1968 and was named the Greenland Jacket. You will find it on page 41. "There will always be a need for durable clothing that can repel moisture but still breathe," says the now 74-year old Åke Nordin.

G-1000

ADAPT YOUR G-1000® GARMENT Adaptable

You can adapt your G-1000 garment to different weather conditions. If the weather is bad, simply heat more Greenland wax into exposed areas using an iron or hairdryer. This will make your garment both waterproof and windproof. If you are going out into beautiful weather, just wash out the wax. With a thin layer of wax, G-1000 is cool, comfortable and offers maximum breathability.   One popular method is to apply more wax to the front of the garment, while leaving the back, where you carry your pack, unwaxed for maximum breathability.

THREE DURABLE FABRICS Our popular G-1000® comes in three variations, Original, Silent and Lite. All three of them share the benefits of G-1000, but each has its own special properties.

1. Take a scoop of Greenland Wax and rub it into the garment where you want to strengthen the impregnation. Apply the wax generously.

2. Using a hairdryer, iron or dryer, heat the garment until the wax melts and is absorbed by the fabric. It is also easy to reinforce the impregnation of your clothes when you are outdoors.

3. Take a scoop of Greenland Wax and rub it into the garment where you want to strengthen the impregnation. Hold the garment several decimetres over a steady, strong flame from your camping stove. Do not hold the garment so close to the flame that it could catch on fire and take the garment off before heating it. Move the garment back and forth over the flame until the wax melts. 42

G-1000 Original is the mother of all comfortable nature experiences. Originally a tent sheet that was too heavy for a lightweight tent. Tested under conditions including everything from Arctic and sub-Arctic expeditions to coffee breaks on sharp stones in forest glades. Today, quite possibly one of the world's most adaptable and durable fabrics.

VIDDA

-a classic in G-1000

G-1000 Silent, a brushed version of G-1000 Original, is a soft, silent fabric. The brushed surface weakens the fabric slightly, but in exchange you get a totally silent fabric that will be useful for game preservation or as clothes that will be worn just as frequently at work as out in nature.

G-1000 Lite weighs less and is cooler than G-1000 Original, which means it is perfect as a lightweight trekking garment or travel clothes that need to withstand tough use. G-1000 Lite is made from Ripstop, which means that it still has very high durability despite its relatively low weight.

One reliable environmental tip is to buy quality. The longer the durability, the fewer purchases you need to make.   Outdoor equipment in G-1000 is a guarantee that you will not need to buy a new jacket or trousers for a long, long time. Lowering your consumption is probably the most environmentally friendly action you can take.   If, against all odds, the garments fall apart, you can easily repair them and then hand them down to someone else when you no longer need them.   Greenland Jacket and Kånken are two classic examples. Our Vidda Trousers are another. Vidda was released in 1999. Today Vidda is one of our most popular durable outdoor trousers - they last a long time and have all of the functions that are needed for trekking in nature. The trousers have reinforcements in the rear and on the knees for extra durability. The leg endings are adjustable to fit your height. With eight pockets, you will have space for all of your necessary equipment, such as a knife, axe, map and compass. 43

OUTDOOR LIFE

KARL AND KARLA

GREENLAND JACKET

Our most popular trousers for spending time outdoors. Perfect for both a mountain trek and spending time at your summer cabin. The trousers are made from G-1000 Silent, which is a brushed G-1000. This makes them a bit softer to wear.   Karl and Karla in G-1000 Silent come in two models, with or without zip-off legs. Karl and Karla are also available in our MicroTravel fabric (see page 105). Both of the trousers have a regular fit and low waist.

While developing his tents, Åke Nordin had gathered a number of different test fabrics from across the world that were piled up in his basement. One day, not long before he was going to head out on one of his countless mountain treks, he happened to see a roll of olive green tent material. The supplier had praised the fabric’s durability, but Åke did not think it was right for his tents. It was too heavy to make a lightweight tent, which was his goal. He unrolled some of the material and felt it. The tight weave of cotton and polyester was both waterproof and breathable. He pulled a little on the fabric. It did seem to be undeniably strong. He placed the roll on his back and carried it upstairs to the sewing machine in his apartment.   After his successes with the Greenland expedition in 1966 and following long conversation with expedition team members Hasse Hellström and Per-Åke Sjöman about equipment and clothing, Åke had begun to seriously consider making a jacket for mountain climbing. Drawing on Hellström’s knowledge in the area, he sketched a pattern for a functional jacket to be worn when on vertical walls of rock. He put two large pockets on the chest, one for maps and one for cigarettes. He reasoned that side pockets were unnecessary since mountain climbers often wear a harness and therefore would not be able to access them. He started pumping the pedal on his Singer and watched as the needle strenuously moved across the strong fabric. He sewed a hood into the collar that would follow the movements of the head. The jacket was given the name Greenland Jacket and immediately became a favourite among climbers and, after a few modifications, for general outdoor life in forests and fields. Today the jacket is just as popular, although most people have realised that there are much better uses for one of the breast pockets. A compass, for example.

HYDRATIC

HYDRATIC

Windproof and waterproof clothing in Hydratic® wicks away perspiration, to reduce the risk you will become damp from your sweat, while still keeping out rain and moisture. Our Hydratic garments protect from the wind, water and snow at the same time as they release as much body steam as possible (a property that many refer to as “breathing”). Hydratic has small, microscopic pores that are thousands of times smaller than a drop of water but hundreds of times larger than steam, which means that it releases moisture. This is how Hydratic clothing is waterproof without you getting sweaty.

Breathing. Effective deep breathing all the way down to your abdomen. Your abdomen expands forward, to the sides and even backward toward your spine. Using your abdomen to breathe has a calming and relaxing effect. You take fewer but more efficient breaths.

are in areas with extremely cold climates or high altitudes. To decrease the risk that you will become chilled, Hydratic helps keep the wind out, which would otherwise draw heat away from your body. Instead of turning back, you can continue on your adventure. Ventilation (“Breathability”) Breathability is measured by the number of grams of water a square meter of fabric lets out in 24 hours. Hydratic releases between 8, 000 and 15, 000 grams. The higher the number, the more moisture that is let out. In order to release the largest amount of steam possible, you will find a number of smart functions in our Hydratic garments. For example, there are ventilation openings in the armpits, mesh pockets and a chimney collar.

Waterproof Waterproofness is measured in water columns and the textiles are tested to determine how much pressure they can withstand before they start to leak. The higher the water column, the more pressure the fabric can withstand. A water column of 1,000 millimetres is technically considered to be waterproof, but this is not even close to sufficient for outdoor activities. Out in nature, pressure is often higher than that, for Hydratic is windproof example when you are on your knees on wet ground. and waterproof and Durable wicks moisture away In order to withstand active outdoor use, our Hydratic   This is why we developed Hydratic to withstand from your body. garments go through the same difficult tests as our pressure of 10,000 – 20,000 millimetres. Torne and Saana are two durable jackets in Hydratic. They protect against wind, water and snow at the same time as they release the body’s perspiration, so there is less of a risk that you will become wet from your own sweat. These two-layer jackets prepare you for wet surprises both in the mountains or when cycling to work. Both of the jackets have a fixed hood with a wind sleeve. The hood is also adjustable in two directions and has a smart roll-down function so you can hide it in the collar when you do not need it.

Kind to the environment. Unlike many other waterproof jackets on the market, Torne and Saana are fluorocarbon-free. So enjoy a rainy day with a good conscience.

Other smart functions include ventilation under the sleeves with two-way, easy-grip zippers. There are also two large front pockets, one easily accessible breast pocket and one inner pocket. The mesh lining wicks moisture away efficiently. The zipper in the front is protected by a flap with push buttons at the top and bottom. Pre-shaped sleeves, drawcord at the hem and velcro sleeve cuffs.

Fluorocarbons are harmful to the environment, which is why the surface treatment of the majority of our waterproof and downproof products do not use these chemicals. Read more on page 75

PONCHO AND CHAPS – underestimated functional garment

- lightweight, comfortable reinforcement garments for when the rain is pouring down

A good poncho can be used in many situations. Naturally, it can be worn in the rain, but it also functions as a tarp, wind sack, cover for your sleeping bag when sleeping under the open sky or as a pullover when you are sitting in your hunting stand. If you use a poncho, or a long rain coat for that matter, chaps are a convenient way to keep your legs and trousers dry.   A poncho should always be included in your equipment when you are out in the wilderness. It is useful during your day-to-day activities, when commuting to and from work, when you are biking or when you are at outdoor concerts.   Chaps are a functional garment that cover your legs and, compared to regular rain trousers, have significantly better ventilation since they sit loosely. They also lower the weight and volume of your pack. You simply pull them over your trekking or everyday trousers and attach them at the waist.

Skur is a line of rain garments in Hydratic that are lightweight and convenient, both in the pack and when you are wearing them. By including only the most necessary details, we have decreased both the weight and the space they take in your pack. In a steady downpour, Skur is the perfect reinforcement for your clothing.   The jackets have fixed, adjustable hoods. The side pockets can be opened for additional ventilation. You can also open the water resistant two-way zipper in the front. The jacket can easily be tightened with a one-hand adjustment at the hem. Skur trousers have an elastic waist and a drawcord adjustment in the leg endings. The knees are pre-shaped for maximum mobility.

FLEECE GUIDE

In the multi-layer principle, the middle layer is the actual heat regulator. Bambu and Comfort Fleece both efficiently wick moisture away and create an air pocket that keeps you warm. This makes them excellent materials for fleece jackets. Comfort Fleece is a polyester fleece of the highest quality. It keeps you warm and dry thanks to air pockets and its moisture-wicking properties. The material offers a lot of warmth for its weight. It also keeps its shape and does not pill, even after repeated washings in the machine. The Bambu fleece has quickly become a favourite thanks to the structure of the bamboo fibre. Our bamboo fleece jack-

60

ets have good ventilation, are comfortable and regulate heat better than most comparable fibres. The bamboo fibre also contains natural minerals that counteract bad odours. Bamboo farming is not harmful to the environment since it does not require chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and bamboo is one hundred percent organic. If you compare our fleece jackets with cheaper brands, the difference in their warmth can initially be marginal. But in a few months the cheaper fleece will pill and become worn, while the Fjällräven fleece will maintain its shape and its warmth, year after year.   SEVERAL FAVOURITES Here you can see a few of our popular

middle layers. Birka Jacket is our most durable fleece. We reinforced the shoulders and elbows with durable G-1000 so it can withstand rough treatment.   If you would like a fleece that is just as warm but without the reinforcements, our Loke and Ronja Fleeces are excellent choices, no matter the time of year. Corte and Corse are made from comfort micro fleece, which means they weigh a bit less. Since we use quality materials, we can also make really thin garments that are still very warm. Kvikkjokk and Jäkkvik Fleeces are two good examples of this. Visit our homepage to find more products or stop by the nearest store and test which fleece is right for you.

CORSE AND CORTE Two fleece jackets in high-quality Comfort Fleece. Offers a lot of warmth for its weight. Two hidden, zippered, vertical side pockets. GOLDEN FOXES

It has been almost 50 years since Per-Åke Sjöman was named the first Golden Fox. This award is given to people who have contributed to the development of outdoor and expedition equipment and have tested their own equipment knowledge on many tough expeditions.   Over the years, many outdoor specialists have received the Golden Fox award. Lars Fält, survival expert and founder of the Swedish Armed Forces' survival school, and Bo Sköld, previously head of the Parachute Ranger School in Karlsborg and currently the Managing Director of Friluftsfrämjandet, are two more recent members of the elite group of outdoor experts who can call themselves Golden Foxes.

Recognising individuals that drive the development of outdoor equipment is just as important today as it was 50 years ago. However, in addition to the development of equipment itself, two additional aspects have emerged that we would like to highlight - two things that need to happen to spend another 50 years outdoors We are talking about protecting animals and nature and sparking an interest in the outdoors in more people.   Starting in 2010, we will be naming Golden Foxes in each of Fjällräven's three focus areas: Functional and durable outdoor equipment, Preservation of animals and nature and inspring love of nature life. In 2010, we will honour pioneers in all three categories.

GOLDEN FOXES 2010

White spot. Under the tail the reindeer has a white fur spot. In danger, she uses it to lead her children to safety.

Heart of Gold. Some people invest the majority of their time leading the development of outdoor life. We call them Golden Foxes.

DEVELOPING OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT

PROTECTING ANIMALS AND NATURE

INSPIRING LOVE OF NATURE

Johan Skullman is the head of equipment development for the Swedish Armed Forces. During his 21 years in the military, Johan has pushed through gender-adapted equipment. Thanks to his efforts, there is finally equipment made specifically for women. Johan has also been a leader in the development of equipment for new, tropical environments and he has raised awareness about the use of equipment in the classic books, "Soldat i fält" (Soldiers in the Field) and "Vintersoldaten" (Winter Soldier).   Johan's work for the Swedish Armed Forces has been a source of inspiration for the development of outdoor equipment for private use and we therefore have the honour of naming Johan Skullman one of the 2010 Golden Foxes.

The arctic fox is teetering on the brink of extinction and has been officially protected since 1928. The driving force behind the preservation efforts and a true believer in the cause is Anders Angerbjörn.   Anders's desire, commitment and determination have helped the arctic fox population survive. His work has not only raised the number or arctic fox, but it has also captured considerable attention with the general public. Hundreds of volunteers and students have lent a helping hand, for example by conducting the inventory and supplementing the food supply. Anders's work has also resulted in five doctor's dissertations.   In honour of his unwavering efforts to save the arctic fox, we are proud to name Anders one of our 2010 Golden Foxes. He will also receive SEK 100,000 to continue his work with saving this highly endangered species.

Children and youth are naturally curious. They like to be out in nature and make new discoveries. Unfortunately, the trend is moving toward spending more time indoors. The situation is made worse by the fact that many parents do not have the possibility of taking their children out into nature. Anders Tysk is the project manager for Svenskt Friluftsliv's Green Team initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to help children and youth become more interested in spending time outdoors, nature and the environment. Thanks to the effort of the Green Team, the younger generations have the opportunity to try everything from trekking and fishing to climbing and cross-country skiing. We would like to give Anders Tysk recognition for his work that makes it possible for children and youth to participate in exciting outdoor activities. He is a 2010 Fjällräven Golden Fox and all Green Team participants will receive outdoor equipment from Fjällräven.

RESPONSIBILITY

Decision-maker. It is mind-boggling to think that our children will have taken over in 50 years. If we can encourage them to respect animals and nature, we will have achieved something fantastic. Both for our children, our children's children and ourselves.

"Since we love to spend time out-

On loan. Animals and nature are two things we have taken for granted for a long time and are a prerequisite for outdoor life. Someone once said that, in reality, we have only borrowed the planet from our children. Unfortunately, we haven't been good tenants. Everyone needs to do more.

72

doors ourselves, we view it as a given that we must take responsibility for ensuring that animals and nature feel good. Our responsibility extends beyond our products and what we want our users to experience when they are out in nature."

Martin Axelhed, General Manager Fj채llr채ven.

73

RESPONSIBILITY

SAVE THE ARCTIC FOX

NO HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS IN OUR RAIN GEAR

We design our products with functions and materials that will ensure they last a long time. We believe this to be better for the environment. We naturally also work with a large number of environmentally friendly materials. But our focus on responsibility extends beyond our products. Quality Time is our brand promise and also reflects our responsibility toward humans, animals and nature.   We are proud of what we are doing, but we are far from finished. We are constantly weighing advantages against disadvantages, researching and trying to make improvements. Every little step we take, in countless areas, becomes something big as a whole - and noticeable. The arctic fox is facing extinction, but with concentrated efforts we can save the species. SEFALO + is the most important component in the project to save the arctic fox. For every sold "Save the Arctic Fox" product, we donate

SEK 50 to the project. SEK 50 from the registration fee of every Fjällräven Classic participant goes to the project. Read more on page 22 or on our website. You can also read about how you can help the arctic fox survive.

" We are doing our best

to integrate environmental care into all areas of our operations"

That fluorocarbons are harmful for living organisms and our environment is a well known fact. Despite this fact, most of the waterproof garments on the market use them. The majority of our waterproof and downproof products, however, are fluorocarbon-free. Keep an eye out for the above symbol. To maintain the functionality of these products, you should use a fluorocarbon-free spray treatment that can be found at most outdoors stores.

KÅNKEN – the world's first climate-compensated backpack GENERATION PRODUCTS - for the sake of the environment

In our Quality Time Policy, we establish that our products should be durable, functional and safe to use. But what does this really mean? Well, primarily, that there are few things more environmentally friendly than a durable product. A product that is passed down from one generation to the next or sold second hand has hardly any impact on the environment compared to buying new. No materials have been produced, no chemicals added and there are hardly any transportation costs to speak of. You also save money since you won't need to buy new trousers for next season just because the knees have worn out.   This is why we develop products that are meant to last a long time. A very long time. When we release a product, it has been reviewed carefully down to the smallest

74

detail. We have weighed every decision carefully. "It is the little things that count" and "No chain is stronger than its weakest link" are guiding mottos for our development department. To the greatest extent possible, our developers choose components that have the same long lifetime. A component that does not meet our requirements may not be used in our products. The Greenland Jacket from 1968, the Kånken backpack from 1978 and Iceland Trousers from 1994 are just some of our products that you still see out in nature after many years of use. If, against all odds, one of our products does fall apart, you can sent it to Ulla or one of our seamstresses and they will fix it for you.

Strict Code of Conduct. We have a responsibility toward everyone who participates in the development, production and distribution of our equipment. We take this responsibility with the same seriousness as we approach our products. Read more about our Code of Conduct at www.fjallraven.se

Global warming is a global problem that affects everyone. If everyone does their part, we will overcome this problem. This is why we are compensating the environment for the emissions that arise in conjunction with the production of our Kånken and Kajka backpacks and their transport.   In 2008, we conducted a lifecycle analysis (ISO 1404014043) of our Kånkan backpack for the Globe Forum conference in Stockholm. This was the first time compensation was offered for the environmental impact of the production of a backpack.   Today we compensate the climate for all Kånken and Kajka backpacks by supporting the Yinyi windpower project in the Ningzia province of northern China. Via the compensation of our emissions and the support of this project, we want to contribute to establishing environmentally friendly energy production and decrease the world's dependence on fossil fuels.   Our project has been reviewed and certified by the UN's Gold Standard, which means that it is carried out within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol and meets strict criteria for quality, transparency and traceability. Read more about our environmental ted work at www.fjallraven.com Climate compensa More people out in nature. We believe that if more people head out into the wilderness, more people will actively preserve it. This is one of the reasons why we want to inspire more people to discover nature. FJÄLLRÄVEN CLASSIC

The Royal Trail, or ‘Kungsleden’. Even though the trail was not named until 1928, the Sami have been traversing this area for centuries. The Kungsleden Trail follows the old paths that were created by people with considerable knowledge about the terrain. Visitors. It is the stillness and beauty that draws people out into the wilderness. Fjällräven Classic turns hiking into a folk festival in the mountains of Swedish Lapland, one of the most beautiful environments in the world.

76

Quality Time can be suddenly standing face to face with a reindeer. Or sitting together with your friends around a crackling fire looking out at a magnificent mountain. It was this love of nature that laid the groundwork for Fjällräven. And our goal is to help more people discover the feeling of freedom that can be found in the wilderness.   This is why we have organised treks in the world's most beautiful environment - the mountains of Swedish Lapland - since the 1970s. Both curious beginners and experienced outdoors people have joined our adventures.   In the 1970s, our "Fjällräven weeks" encouraged city people to dare to head out into the mountains around Riksgränsen. Today Fjällräven Classic is our most popular adventure and attracts people from across the world. Starting in the Sami village of Nikkaluokta, one hundred ten kilometres are covered before reaching the finish line in Abisko, which is located 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle.   Fjällräven CLASSIC is for everyone. Old and young. People who speed through life and those who like to take it slow. Join us on a trek filled with dramatic wilderness and wonderful people. Quite simply an experience you will always remember. 77

This is where the fantastic mountains start to rise majestically into the air and you enter into one of the most beautiful valleys of the trek. Only one kilometre after the station you start to feel that you have entered into the wilderness. The path starts along the slightly sloping foot of Kebnekaise. The massive sides of the mountain frame the trail along the stream. At first, the path is easy and the stream runs quietly alongside, but the terrain soon becomes more rocky. The path continues slightly uphill to the crown preceding the Singistugor cabins. Many think that the stretch from the “Singistugorna 3 km” sign to the cabins feels much longer. Take a moment before the path starts to slope downwards. The view over Tjäkjavagge and the Kungsleden trail toward Kaitum is magnificent. Dramatic clouds often sweep over the peaks.

Keronbacken

Stage 3: Singistugan – Sälkastugan

Here you take your first steps onto the main trail of Kungsleden. Singistugan does not have a restaurant, but you can pick up your Fjällräven CLASSIC provisions in the Fjällräven tent. Face the north and continue hiking. At first the path twists and turns, but it soon opens into a valley with an expansive view. On a cloudless day, you can catch a glimpse of the snowclad northern peak of Kebnekaise to the right. The trek is easy with soft uphill and downhill terrain. When you reach the Koupertjåkka shelter, you are halfway to Sälka. From the bridge, you can see the unique characteristics of the Drakryggen (Dragonback) mountain. The last stretch into Sälka seems like it never ends. The landscape does not change very much and the path crawls forward in zigzags. But here there are plenty of streams to drink from and wonderful spots to take a rest. Seize the moment and enjoy the mountain view!

ST

PLAYA DEL ABISKO One of the mountain world's most well-kept secrets is found at the Abiskojaure cabin. Here you will find a fantastic sandy beach.

The speed at the start in Nikkaluokta is usually very fast. At the beginning of the trek, it can be quite crowded even though the path is wide. This part of the trail takes you through birch forests and over plank-crossed bogs and unfortunately is not appreciated by all hikers, but rather is viewed as the fastest way to get to more interesting areas of the trail. Take the time to adjust your pack and rest. Along the way you will pass Lapp-Donalds, which sells reindeer hamburgers, and the taxi boat to Kebnekaise, which is for trekkers not participating in the Fjällräven CLASSIC. The view of the mountain peaks of Tuolpagorni dominate a large portion of this stretch - which is definitely not a bad thing. Many brooks cross the path, so take the opportunity to drink when you can. You will be able to eat or take a coffee break at the mountain station. You can put up your tent several kilometres before or after the station. It will be light until around 10PM, depending on the weather.

Stage 4: Sälkastugan – Tjäktja

A lesjaure

In Sälka, you can shop at the little kiosk. Many choose to camp here and the wood-fired sauna is included in the registration fee. If you arrive in the afternoon and think it is too early to pitch your tent, you will need to make a strategic decision. Either continue on for the eight kilometres to the Tjäktja pass and tent at the 900 meter curve on the map right before the path pulls sharply upward. Or go all the way to the Tjäktjastugan (the Tjäkta cabin), which is about a kilometre further on down the trail. It is hard to find water and places to camp in between. The Tjäktja pass is one of the most difficult stretches of the trek. Stay on the planks - balancing on the stones wears down your feet. Keep an easy pace and stop often. If nothing else, you can blame this on the fantastic view. On the other side of the Tjäkja pass, a fascinating moonscape stretches before you.

SA MI CA MP The Alesjaure Sami camp is located on the east side of the lake. In September, the Sami begin to round up their reindeer for the fall slaughter.

Stage 5: Tjäktja – Alesjaurestugan

ST

From Tjäktja, the path heads down onto grassy moors to Alisätno. At the Sielmavjjira stream, there are large, polished rocks that are perfect for resting or eating lunch. The entire stretch to Alesjaure and the cabin is easy hiking that is surrounded by greenery. There are many streams to drink from and already at the halfway point you can see the cabins up in the distance at the entrance to Alesjaure. It is often easy to find a camping spot here, as long as it has not rained a lot and left the ground wetter than normal. At the Alesjaurestuga cabin, you can purchase provisions and even take a coffee break. Freshly baked cinnamon buns disappear in a flash. Our blister specialist usually has a full schedule right about now. Take a moment to sit in the wonderful sauna before heading out to find a place to pitch your tent. You chop the wood yourself. There are a few places to tent right beside the cabin.

Stage 7: Kieron Mountain – Abisko Mountain Station

About one kilometre after the checkpoint, you will arrive at the Abisko National Park. Immediately after the national park border, you will find areas in the birch forest where you can pitch your tent. Once you are inside the park, you are only allowed to camp by the Abiskojaure lake and at a camping site a few kilometres north of Abisko. If you are going to put up your tent by the Abiskojaure lake, we recommend taking a dip at the fantastic sandy beach. Then the only thing left to do is finish the trek. But preferably not all at once, even though the menu of the restaurant in Abisko tempts many to pick up the pace. Resist the urge to stress. The shady birch forest is a wonderful break from the mountain moors and the ground is well trodden and flat. The path follows the Abiskojåkka river and at several locations along the way you can go down and look at the impressive canyon. You have not reached the Fjällräven CLASSIC finish line when you step through the wooden portal marking the end of Kungsleden. You need to take a sharp left and go under the road, even though the station and the finish line can be glimpsed straight ahead. Hang in there. At the finish line, a well-deserved rest, a medal and the unbeatable feeling of having gotten there on your own two feet await you!

From Kiruna, there are transfer busses to the start in Nikkaluokta. This is the start of a trek that follows one of the world's greatest hiking trails. Experienced guides are spread out along the trail to offer advice and assistance. The registration fee includes a map, food and fuel. Fuel refilling stations are available along the trail. Making this big adventure more accessible for people other than the professionals has proven to be a big success - 2,000 people from 20 different countries participate in the event every year. Come along on the biggest adventure of the summer.

Follow the signs to Abiskojaure and stay on the left side of the Alesjaure lake, otherwise you will end up at a ford with a strong current at the edge of the lake, which we do not recommend. Here the terrain is flatter than before and the interlocking lakes on the right-hand side dominate the landscape. Shrub willow and mountain moors edge the trail. Immediately before the reindeer enclosure you can fill up your water bottles. This is the last opportunity for about six kilometres. The path along the side of the Kartinvare mountain is slightly at a slant and many find the hill down to the birch forest difficult after a long day of hiking. The checkpoint is close to the bridge that crosses the Siellajåkka stream.

Folk festival in one of the world's most beautiful environment.

The world's most beautiful trek will be held on August 6-8 along the Kungsleden Trail in Lapland. The trek passes through the Kebnekaise mountain chain, where the mountain tops tower high in the sky and will accompany you throughout the journey. The fantastic views and the contrasting landscapes of the valleys, from lush meadows to barren mountain plains, stretch for kilometre after kilometre. At the end, you enter the beautiful Abisko National Park on trails that wind through fragrant birch forests and protected orchids.

hikers in a mountain valley is one too many. But by international standards, the Kungsleden Trail is not heavily trafficked at all.

explored and barely even marked by a white dot on the map. At least among the Swedish portion of the population. The Sami had been in this area for centuries. The birth of the Kungsleden Trail Sweden's highest mountain, Kebnekaise, was climbed as late as 1883 by the Frenchman Charles Rabot. The idea was then born to create a hiking trail that went south from Abisko toward Kebnekaise. The trail would turn east toward the Sami village Nikkaluokta or continue on to Kvikkjokk in Sarek. It would be a royal trail through the most magnificent part of the Swedish mountains. The hiking pioneers, who were inspired by the Russian czar (who had put a ruler on the map when the railway would be built between St. Petersburg and Moscow) wanted the trail to run northsouth to the greatest extent possible.

A CLASSIC TRAIL

In the beginning of the 1900s, the railway reached the mountains of Lapland. From Abisko, a trail was drawn straight south. One hundred years later, the Kungsleden Trail is one of the world's best hiking trails. By: Michael Tjelder The stretch of railroad that runs past Abisko is usually said to be Sweden's finest, with the wide Torneträsk Lake to the north and the peaks of Abisko to the south. But when the railway was inaugurated in 1903, the main topic of discussion was not the beauty of the landscape. The main reason for the railway was to transport iron ore from Kiruna to Narvik's ice-free harbour in Norway. But it did not take a long time before people's eyes were drawn to the impressive mountains south of Abisko.   As early as 1906, the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) 80

opened a simpler mountain station here. STF was founded in 1885 with the motto "to promote Swedish tourism and spread knowledge about the country and its people". Similar nationalistic tourism movements were started in other European countries. The investment in Abisko quickly became a success.   Within just a few years, it was the largest tourist facility in the mountains of Lapland and consisted of around ten buildings and 130 beds.   At that time, the Lapland mountains were relatively un-

Cairns lead the way The name "Kungsleden" was not given until 1928, at which point the entire path to Kvikkjokk as well as the fords were marked and row boats were distributed where needed. Confusion about the name and uncertainty about where the trail goes are both a part of the Kungsleden Trail's history since it was extended several times. Today, what is considered to be the real Kungsleden Trail is 420 kilometres long and stretches from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in southern Lapland. But the colloquial use of the name refers to the classic stretch between Abisko and Nikkaluokta via the Kebnekaise Mountain Station. A trek up to Sweden's ceiling and down again through high mountain terrain.   Like all national icons, the Kungsleden Trail has been the object of debate. Some of the more experienced Swedish trekkers have felt that it has been too heavily trafficked. But they have also somewhat unwillingly admitted that the landscape is still impressive. As Svante Lundgren wrote in his book, Kungsleden, from 1955, "I used to hate the Kungsleden Trail with all of my heart...but it is undeniably an honest trail that runs naturally through the uneven terrain and follows ancient paths that the locals, using their extensive knowledge of the terrain, created over the years."   What is considered to be "too heavily trafficked" is also an opinion that can differ quite significantly. Some veterans think that two

Is Lapland more beautiful than the Himalayas? A countless number of picture books and guide books about Kungsleden Trail have been published. Quite a few of these are by Claes Grundsten, Sweden's possibly most well known nature photographer and author. He has also been on around fifty of the world's most famous trails. When he lists the Kungsleden Trail in the same international top class as significantly more well known names, for example Overland Track in Tasmania, Milford Track in New Zealand and the Inca Trail in Peru, he does not do so out of loyalty to his native country. Quite the opposite - he claims he is so local he is "blind" to the beauty of Sweden. "When I was younger, I was more attracted by Canada's wilderness and the Himalayas," says Claes Grundsten. It took a trip to Nepal and a meeting with a German trekker for him to understand the beauty of Kungsleden Trail.   "I was in the Himalayas 25 years ago on my way to Mount Everest. At the famous Thyangboche monastery, I watched an absolutely magical sunset with a German trekker. We were enjoying the view, when my German companion suddenly exclaimed, 'Sure, this is nice, but my best experience is still hiking the Kungsleden Trail between Kebnekaise and Abisko. It was autumn and the colours were fabulous.'" The silhouette of Tuolpagorni It is easy to agree with the German trekker after taking just a few steps to the west from Nikkaluokta. It does not take long before you can smell the low mountain birches and the damp bogs.   After half an hour, the forest thins out and the landscape opens up before your eyes. On the other side of the Ladtjojaure lake, one of the most photographed landscapes in the Swedish mountains rises into view - the craggy top of Tuolpagorni with its characteristic bowl just below its peak, Singitjåkka to the left and Kebnekaise's southern slope to the right. This view has caught the breath of many a trekker. And Fjällräven Classic has only just begun.

VOICES FROM THE TRAIL

"

The greatest part of the Classic is not only the nature, but also the sense of community among all of the participants. No matter our age or background, we all have the same goal - making it through the 110 kilometres from Nikkaluokta to Abisko. There is always someone to talk to and, strangely enough, there is always something about the trek to talk about. I had a really great time, so I will be back next year, but next time I will bring my family . Erik, 44

"

"

"

What I remember most about the Classic is probably the finish line. We arrived late in the evening with worn-out knees and exhausted backs after a really long day from Kieron. When we got close to the finish line, we could hear music and see the fires - and then people began applauding for us! People stood along the trail and applauded as we crossed the finish line. That was an amazing feeling! I was so proud and happy that I had completed this totally fantastic experience . Stina, 33

"

" Since I have not hiked very much, the Classic was the perfect start for me. I had a clear goal that I could go out and train for. When it was time to leave, I only needed to get myself on a train to Kiruna. I was picked up there and all the food and transportation was arranged up to the start the next day. During the 110 kilometres to Abisko, things went better than I expected, even if it was difficult at the end . Eva, 57

The first year I finished in under 48 hours, mainly to see if I could do it. But it feels like I missed out on some of the atmosphere and the sense of community. This year I am going to take the maximum amount of time, simply enjoy myself, sleep in in the mornings and take long lunch breaks as often as I can. I am bringing my fishing rod, so maybe there will be fresh Arctic charr for dinner  . Olle, 26

Gathering point. What started as a shared tribal fire eventually evolved into individual family fires.Today we still love to gather around an evening fire with our friends. Responsibility. A fire is not just a social hub; it can make a huge difference in emergency situations out in the wilderness. But remember that nature reserves and national parks have special rules concerning open fires. Only light a fire in approved areas.

Children are naturally curious. They like to be out in nature and make new discoveries. Unfortunately, the trend is moving toward spending more time indoors. We want to change that.   We want to take our responsibility and make children curious about nature. Help them discover ant hills, pick up pine cones, really feel the weather and wind - so they then cannot wait to go back out. Green Team Most parents understand how important it is to allow their children to spend time in nature at an early age. Unfortunately, many parents do not have the opportunity, time or the knowledge level needed for taking their children out into nature. This is why we are working together with Svenskt Friluftsliv's Green Team to help organise exciting outdoor activities for children and youth.   Fjällräven has developed introduction material with practical tips and good advice about spending time outdoors. In addition, all of the children and young adults that join the Green Team receive our popular Greenland Jacket with a Green Team emblem. Having fun in nature We have also started Fjällräven's Nature Is Fun Day. This event is aimed at helping parents and children discover nature and have fun at the same time. Our first Nature is Fun Day was held in Stockholm in 2008 and expanded in 2009 to be a part of the newly started Fjällräven Halv Classic, a 50 km trek along the Gästrikeleden Trail.   But Sweden is not the only country where children need to get out into nature. In 2010 we are also introducing Fjällräven's Nature Is Fun Day in Denmark.

Bring your children out into nature. Help them discover ant hills, pick up pine cones, really feel the weather and wind - so they then cannot wait to go back out. 89

WANTED: MORE DEFENDERS OF THE ENVIRONMENT We try to include an environmental aspect into everything we do for one simple reason. Nature is where we spend our free time and we want our children and grandchildren to also be able to enjoy nature the same way as we have the past 50 years. We want people to be able to discover the joy of taking a walk in the woods, spending a week in the mountains or even just spending a weekend in the country. Fresh air. Tranquillity. We are proud to develop products that last a long time and provide functions that make it easier for people to be outside. Through a number of co-operations we are also trying to awaken an interest for nature in as many people as possible. To help people experience nature instead of just watching about it on TV or reading about it in books. When we bring curious beginners out into nature via our events, we have noticed that, the more time they spend outdoors, the more interest they show in taking care of the environment. This makes us happy. So the next time you are out on a walk in the woods, spending a week in the mountains or just heading out to the country for the weekend, why not bring a friend who normally would not even think about taking a single step out into our beautiful nature. If we can work together to bring more people out into nature and help them truly understand the value of clean, thriving nature, we will have won several battles in the struggle to take care of nature and the environment in our everyday lives. Read more about our efforts to save animals and nature on our website. You can even share your own environmental tips or read ours and those of others.

Swedes have not only led the way in the discovery of the impact toxins have on the environment, but also in acidification and the greenhouse effect. In 1896, chemist Svante Arrhenius was the first in the world to demonstrate that an increase in carbon dioxide levels could raise the Earth’s temperature 5-6 degrees, a problem that is much more acute today. After the environmental revival of the 1970s, environmental awareness lost ground in public debate forums, but we are glad to see that the general public’s interest in the environment is steadily growing. 90

1. STF ABISKO People from all over the world have been coming to Abisko, which lies 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, for more than one hundred years. Here you will enjoy a rich mountain life and discover Lapporten, Torneträsk, Mount Nuolja and the Abisko canyon. The famous Kungsleden Trail starts and ends here.

5. STF GOTSKA SANDÖN Experience the Gotska Sandön National Park, the Baltic Sea's most isolated island. Here you can walk for kilometres on the white sandy beaches or through pristine pine forests on paths that lead you to buildings and places that have their own fascinating history.

2. STF KEBNEKAISE Standing at the foot of Sweden's highest mountain requires humility. The mountain guides and hosts here share the same fascination and respect for the powers of nature, as well as a determination to carefully lead you to the top. This year is the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first guests here.

6. STF FINNHAMN At Finnhamn, you can take a walk to enjoy the view, fish from docks and cliffs, sit in the sauna, go out on a boat or just enjoy being one with nature. There are no private buildings on the island, so the chances that you will find your own favourite spot are quite good.

3. STF STORULVÅN This station's close proximity to mountains for climbing and, in the winter, gliding down, combined with the constant presence of the Syl mountains just 20-30 km away, creates a sporty atmosphere. Storulvån is located at the end of the road - in the middle of the mountains. Here you will find silence and wide views just around the corner, as well as a wonderful mix of skiers, people enjoying life and arctic foxes - year round.

7. STF LJUNGSKILE Where the sky meets the ocean you will find this hostel in the small town of Ljungskile, with the forest on one side and the powerful ocean on the other. In addition to the hostel, you will find here Sweden's largest test centre for kayaks and you can test more than 50 different types of kayaks.

4. ULVÖN Ulvön is located in Örnsköldsvik's archipelago in the heart of the High Coast. Ulvö Harbour can be found on the north island and is well protected by the Ulvö Sound. Ulvön is perhaps best known for its fermented Baltic herring, which has been produced on the island for more than one hundred years. The beautiful archipelago environment offers restaurants, hotels, hostels, rental cabins, stores and many old, beautiful buildings.

In our 1968 catalogue, our readers were given detailed instructions on how to make their own tent. Each part could be purchased separately - everything from 475 metres of tent thread for SEK 5.50 to D-rings at 30 öre a piece.

KNOWLEDGE IS LIKE FERTILISER Fjällräven is built around the concept of developing sustainable, functional equipment. For the past 50 years, we have gathered knowledge about how products should be developed so you can enjoy yourself when you are out in nature. We have done this by spending time outdoors ourselves. (The weather in the office is just a bit too predictable.) Our best ideas actually come from our own experiences. And from letters from people like you. We will gladly share the lessons we have learned, but we also want to also hear about the experiences of others. Knowledge is like fertiliser - if you spread it around, new ideas will grow. This 94

is not a new approach for us. In 1968, we told you how we made our tents. The reason for this was quite simple. As Fjällräven founder Åke says, “The only way to get an absolutely perfect tent is to make one yourself. You, and only you, know exactly how you want your tent to function and look.” Today’s tents have been improved with even more functional details. Even the way information is spread has changed dramatically. We think this is a good thing; on our website, www. fjallraven.se, we can now offer many more tips about nature and products than would have ever fit in our catalogue.

VISIT US ONLINE If you are ever sitting inside and need a little glimpse of the outdoors, stop by our website. ADVENTURE TRAVEL

" We love discovering the magnificent

96

scenery of the wilderness even far away from the Swedish mountains. This could mean taking a trip to relax or heading off on an action-packed adventure. It could also mean seeing strange animals and plants in their natural environment and meeting people who live following traditional manners and customs. "

ADVENTURE TRAVEL

Explorer and nature filmmaker Jan Lindblad regularly used Fjällräven equipment during his expeditions to all of the corners of the world.

Sven A. Voight, bush pilot, Ruaha. After twelve years in tough environments during his time in the German army and his daily use of Fjällräven travel clothing, he pretty much knows which functions work and which functions must be modified before our clothes go to production.

During the 1970s, people began to realise that their travel clothes were not quite what they should be. We responded with carefully designed clothing.

FROM SAREK TO SERENGETI - how we became the adventure traveller's favourite Despite our name, we do not only develop equipment to be used in the mountains or on polar adventures. Since the late 1960s, our equipment has also been used on tropical and subtropical expeditions.   Explorer and nature filmmaker Jan Lindblad and documentary filmmaker and Oscar prize winner Arne Sucksdorff both praised our equipment. "The climate is extraordinarily challenging with burning sun and torrential rains, but despite that I have never had one single problem with the tents. There are many people here who bemoan the fact that Fjällräven does not have a branch office in Brazil," writes 98

Sucksdorff in a letter in 1972 after using our equipment for six years in the Mato Grosso jungle. Soon requests also poured in for functional clothing and in 1974 the sand-coloured Safari Jacket was released. Fourteen years later, another classic saw the light of day - the Survival Jacket. There are many stories about long, thorough examinations by border guards who were impressed by the jacket. They very carefully went through pockets that were made for a hammock, signal rocket and fishing line with a hook.   In the 1990s came an entire series of clothes - the Globetrotter series. The requirements from the users were clear. The

Documentary filmmaker and Sweden's first Oscar prize winner, Arne Sucksdorff, used Fjällräven equipment on his expeditions.

" Fjällräven equipment was already being used

on tropical and subtropical expeditions in the 1960s. Travel clothing arrived in the 1970s that left border guards speechless with wonder. " garments should be lightweight, easy to wash, quick-drying and cool. The solution was Multi-Micro, a microfibre material consisting of 75% polyamide and 25% cotton. It was quickdrying, lightweight, comfortable and had good breathability.   Today we continue to develop products for warmer latitudes under the name Travel. Here you will find jackets and trousers made from MicroTravel (MT) and G-1000 Lite. You will also find shirts made from bamboo.   These materials will keep you fresh since they have excellent ventilation, which means your clothes will stay dry and have a cool, comfortable feel. Unnecessary weight is avoided

at all costs when travelling, so we have made this equipment to weigh as little as possible. Our Travel garments are also more or less wrinkle-free and you will find smart pockets and multiple functions that make your life easier when you are on an adventure.   Just as with our trekking and polar equipment, our travel equipment is developed and tested by field experts. We listen to the experiences of anyone and everyone - from adventurers and nature photographers to guides and regular tourists. In exchange, we receive solutions and suggestions that in the end benefit you. 99

RUAHA – BIG, WILD AND BEAUTIFUL

Travel clothes from Fjällräven. Lightweight, quick-drying, cool and easy to wash.

By Jerry Engström, Head of Marketing, Fjällräven

It is early in the morning. The air feels cooler than I expected. My windproof jacket and warm fleece are much needed as our open Land Rover drives along the river. We have a 360 degree view of unobstructed landscape and close contact with animals and nature.   We are in Ruaha, Tanzania’s largest national park, which is as big as Belgium. From our terrace, we have just watched in fascination as the colours of the savannah, mountains and river changed as the sun rose above the horizon. The reason for our trip was to test some travel equipment that we were developing, as well as talking to the pilots and guides who wear our clothes everyday in order to gain some valuable feedback.   Our driver, Joseph, guides us with sharp eyes through the flocks of zebras, giraffes and elephants. An older couple who have been on countless safaris tell us that this trip is like going on a safari fifty years ago. No crowds of people or cars only complete proximity to nature.   Ruaha is not as exploited as many other African parks and is well known for its prides of lions. Soon we see a pride that is slowly creeping forward, blinded by the rays of the sun. Impalas take to flight around us with their gigantic leaps and baboons admonish us from the trees.   We continue our journey and Joseph points to a bush where he has seen a leopard. The response from Maria, our product designer, is somewhat unexpected. She quickly pulls out her sketchpad and mumbles, “My jacket needs a more convenient pocket for sunscreen and sunglasses”.   The location of the camp is magnificent. A crocodile is lying on the other side of the river and a hippopotamus is swim100

ming in the water. It is probably one of the hippos that wakes us during the night with its grunting as it munches on grass right outside our bungalow. Even the elephants and antelopes sometimes come down to the water below our verandas. We make a fire and in its flickering light we discuss our experiences and equipment. The stars are glowing in the sky above us.   Sven A. Voigt has been working as a bush pilot in Ruaha for the past two years. He only works in Fjllrven clothing. “Nothing else is good enough,” he says. He has followed in his grandfather’s footsteps, who started a tea farm in this area in the 1920s.   Sven grew up in Africa, then served as an infantry officer in the German army for twelve years. Two years ago, he returned to Tanzania to fly. He works for the Fox family, who operate several safari camps and lodges in Tanzania, including the magnificent Ruaha River Lodge. Both the Voigt and Fox families go back a long way together, and the Voigts supported the Foxes in the construction of the lodge from their farm in the Southern Highlands in the early 1980s. Today the Ruaha River Lodge has been replaced with more conveniences and receives visitors from around the world. Many of them are flown there by Sven.   “Even though this work entails more than just flying, it is a great benefit to be able to bring people to this fantastic place. From my ‘office’ I look out over one of the world’s most wonderful areas of nature”, concludes Sven and reminds us, “Don’t forget to make the duffle bags so they can fit in the luggage compartment of the plane, you have the measurements”.

Sit still and keep quiet. Ruaha is known for its prides of lions.

PROTECT THE WILDLIFE By visiting the large wildlife reserve in Tanzania, you will help ensure that the country's wildlife will be around also in the future. Your journey decreases the risk for exploitation and extensive poaching.   You can quickly and easily fly to Ruaha from Dar es Salaam.   The best lodging is at Ruaha River Lodge, which has a fantastic location.   The Swedish travel agent Äventyrsresor (www.aventyrsresor.se) arranges unique expeditions in small groups to Ruaha between June and February.

Safari. Means "travel" in Swahili. The original safari is found in the savannas of eastern Africa

“ Soon we see a pride of lions

slowly creeping forward, blinded by the rays of the sun. Impalas take to flight around us with their gigantic leaps and baboons admonish us from the trees.“ 101

MT MT consists of micropolyamide and a soft cotton blend that gives the fabric a soft, brushed feel. The material combines low weight with high strength, but still has cotton's cool properties. The fabric is UV resistant, fairly water repellent and wrinkle-free. Breathability is high despite the tight weave. UV protection. MT is a protective fabric that blocks almost all UV radiation - including both alpha and beta rays. MT offers twice the protection of cotton. Quick-drying. MT products offer maximum breathability and are quickdrying. The fabric dries three times as quickly as cotton. Lightweight. MT products are lightweight and practically wrinkle-free, which makes them ideal for travels and adventures in warm climates. 104

The most important thing to remember when you buy new luggage is that you will often be on the move with it. More than you expect. From bus to boat or airplane. With a taxi or jeep, perhaps even on the back of a truck, before you finish your journey on foot. And not always on even terrain.

TRAVEL WHEELER - finally, a large cabin bag

AWAY TRAVEL

- a travel collection that can handle a tough environment

At Fjällräven, we develop travel equipment to make your trip easier. Regardless of where and how you travel. To the jungles of Borneo, the savannas of Tanzania or the wilderness of Lapland. With jolting jeeps, rumbling airplanes or modern high-speed trains. Your equipment should always be protected and well organised.   This is why we are now releasing our travel line, Away Travel. A line of durable duffle bags, wheeled bags, backpacks and bags with smart functions. The duffle bags have many smart pocket solutions and carrying possibilities. We put wheels on one so you can roll it whenever possible. Our roll bag, which glides forward just as easily at airports as on gravel roads, was also given a comfortable support system so you can carry it on your back when you are walking on uneven terrain. In order to avoid getting your clothes dirty

unnecessarily, we also added a cover for the wheels when you are carrying the bag on your back. We also used high quality ball bearings in the wheels so you can easily pull your bag over different types of surfaces. We could continue along this line for the rest of the catalogue. But what we really wanted to say is that Fjällräven's durable travel equipment protects your pack and keeps it well organised. The entire collection is made from durable material and the larger pieces of equipment have waterproof tarpaulin on the bottom to protect against moisture. On the outside of the bags you will find leather details that will become more beautiful over time. The insides are exactly as you would expect - filled with smart storage functions.

The shoulder straps can be tucked discreetly in a back pocket.

MATERIAL

Material and function G-1000® – an unsurpassed classic G-1000 is a classic in Fjällräven clothes. Its densely woven fabric is a 65 % polyester and 35 % cotton blend, making the material windproof and extremely hardwearing. An added impregnation also makes it water resistant. You can improve the impregnation by applying Fjällräven’s environmentally friendly Greenland Wax. The high-strength fabric effectively releases moisture from the body and is ideal for an active outdoor life. You will find our G-1000 products in our Trekking line. G-1000® comes in three variations: G1000® Original, G1000® Silent and G1000® Lite. UV PROTECTION The densely woven fabric provides almost 100% protection from the sun’s alpha and beta rays. MOSQUITO SAFE The tight G-1000 weave also offers protection against annoying mosquito bites, which makes G-1000 garments the perfect companion in both the forest and the mountains.

BAMBOO CHARCOAL Bamboo charcoal is made up from pieces of bamboo that is burned inside an oven at high temperatures. Bamboo is 100% naturally grown without using any pesticides or fertilizers and is a very environmentally friendly material. In our clothes Bamboo charcoal treated polyester is naturally preventing bacterial growth and is quick drying and wicking. Prevents bacterial growth: The structure of bamboo charcoal provides natural minerals, which absorb moisture, prevent bacteria growth and reduce odor. Naturally grown: Bamboo is 100% naturally grown without using any pesticides or fertilizers. Quick dry: Polyester makes the garment fast drying. Wicking: Polyester helps move sweat away from the skin to the outer surface of the fabric, where it evaporates. BAMBOO FIBRE Bamboo fiber is naturally anti-bacterial, highly breathable and environmentally friendly. It is also very soft to the touch and comfortable. Breathable: Due to the construction of the bamboo fiber, the garment is more breathable, comfortable and thermal regulating than most other comparable fibres. It keeps you cool, dry and comfortable all day long. Anti-bacterial: The anti-bacterial element in bamboo fiber keeps bacteria away from the textile and provides a natural anti odor function. Naturally grown: BAMBOO is 100% naturally grown without using any pesticides or fertilizers.

Wind and waterproof garments with Hydratic also let bodily moisture escape, making it less likely that you’ll be unpleasantly sweaty. This is called “diffusing”, i.e. keeping rain and water out but releasing the evaporating moisture from the body. Although somewhat simplified, the term is that the clothes breathe or have breathability. Hydratic, which is a coating, laminate or loose membrane, is combined with the fabrics and provides different levels of waterproofness and breathability depending on the combination. Our Hydratic products are primarily found in the Trekking and Forest lines. Waterproofness is measured in water columns, i.e. the pressure the fabric can withstand before it starts to leak. The higher the water column, the more pressure the fabric can withstand. In purely technical terms, products that can withstand a water column 1,000 millimetres high are considered waterproof, although the pressure from kneeling on wet ground is higher. Garments with Hydratic can withstand a column of 8, 000 to 20, 000 millimetres. Breathability is measured by the number of grams of water a square meter of fabric lets out in 24 hours. Hydratic releases between 3, 000 and 15, 000 grams. The higher the number, the more moisture that is let out.

STORMBLOCKER A windproof membrane that also lets bodily moisture through. Ideal for strenuous activities when you need complete wind protection. Stormblocker is water resistant and prevents you from getting wet during short periods of rain. Stormblocker gives you flexible, versatile garments for a wide range of activities.

You can find our MT products under Travel. Quick-drying. MT products offer maximum breathability and are quickdrying. The fabric dries three times faster than cotton. Lightweight. MT products are lightweight and practically wrinkle-free, which makes them ideal for travels and adventures in warm climates. UV protection. MT is a protective fabric that blocks almost all UV radiation - including both alpha and beta rays. MT offers twice the protection of cotton.

A polyester fleece of the highest quality that keeps you warm and dry thanks to its excellent air pockets and moisturewicking abilities. The material offers a lot of warmth for its weight, but it also keeps its shape and does not pill, even after repeated machine washings. Thanks to its moisture-wicking properties and wind penetration, Comfort Fleece is ideal even when you want to benefit from the wind's cooling effects.

Proven over time Vinylon F is the functional material that has played a large role in helping the Kånken age gracefully. Vinylon F, which is a synthetic fibre, has many of the positive properties of natural fibres. Fabric used to make bags normally needs to be coated with something in order to be waterproof and it often loses its waterproofness over time. Vinylon F does not need to be coated - it absorbs moisture better than any other synthetic fibre.

Measurements and sizes

Vinylon F swells like a natural fibre, which makes it denser when it rains. This gives the material waterproof qualities without needing any treatment. Vinylon F is unbeatable since it is both lightweight and extremely durable. A combination that many modern materials cannot match. The fabric keeps its properties year after year. It weighs 145 g/m2, which is comparable to most of the modern lightweight materials that are sued in backpacks.

General functions

Sleeve button Many of our shirts have an additional piece of fabric with a buttonhole on the inside of the sleeve. This allows you to roll up your sleeve and button it so it does not roll down.

Raw length Most of our trousers come in raw length. This means that you can adjust the length of the legs to your exact requirements.

Safety pocket Several of our trousers have an extra zippered inside pocket that is large enough for your valuables, such as money, jewellery, passports, tickets and credit cards.

Zip-off function Some of our trousers have a zip-off function. This allows you to adjust the length of the trouser legs from full length to shorts or, in some cases, 3/4 length.

Kånken Mini – A backpack that holds everything you need for a great day in the woods. Like a sandwich and a bit of chocolate.

OUR GREAT ADVANTAGE What you see before you is not merely a picture. It is a passion. For fifty years I have been inspired by a single goal. To make the wilderness more accessible to more people.   The first product I made was a wooden frame for a backpack. I continued with products such as condense-free tents and multiple durable fabrics for clothing. The ideas always came to me when I was out trekking.   Our method of working has anchored itself as a proud tradition at Fjällräven. Product development is exactly the same every season. We

head out to test our clothes and equipment and come back to the office with loads of new ideas and solutions.   For example, a couple years ago we realized that adding stretch panels to our durable G-1000® fabric would probably make some of our garments easier to move in. We have taken this idea one step further in this year’s new ”Kalfjäll” and ”Tundra” trousers. We also wanted to develop a durable fabric that is more lightweight and cooler. In a few pages you will see the results – a new member to the

G-1000 family that we call ”Lite”.   During our early years, we placed all our focus on backpacks and tents. After having spent the last few years on noticeably improve the clothes you are wearing, we are now placing even more attention on our proud tradition. Hardware.   Minimal environmental impact is something that we believe in strongly. Sustainable products that can be used for a long time are the future.

Minimal environmental impact is something that we believe in strongly. Sustainable products that can be used for a long time are the future. Fjällräven’s clothing, equipment and fabrics have proven themselves to last for generations. We also regularly review the fabrics we use.   Fjällräven is turning 50. And we have just begun our trek.   Welcome, it is time for the next chapter in Fjällräven’s history.

For 50 years we have developed and improved products that make it easier for people to enjoy nature. Spending time outdoors appears to be taking on a more important role in our lives as more and more people feel they are losing their grip on time in their everyday lives. Nature is becoming a source of strength and energy. The best part about nature and the wilderness is that the way we interact with it is extremely personal. You do not need to be an extreme athlete to appreciate the benefits of being active in your free time. Fall into the rhythm of nature’s pendulum. Release the anchor for just a moment and feel the freedom. That is what we mean by Quality Time. Once you have become more experienced, we will gladly accompany you on your adventures beyond the well-travelled paths. You might want to stay out a little bit longer. Maybe even spend the night if you have not tried it before. This basic idea of Quality Time for everyone forms the foundation of our entire concept. Durable and functional equipment for all types of outdoor activities. We will always be the companion you can depend on. The challenges we face today are the same as when we started. Discovering innovative, practical solutions for clothing and equipment. Protecting animals and nature. Inspiring more people to discover a love of nature. We consider this to be our way of contributing to a good standard of living for ourselves and for all other living creatures. A healthy outdoor life now and for coming generations. For the simple reason that we love the outdoors ourselves. It is amazing how fast 50 years can fly by when you are having fun. We hope to see you out there. www.fjallraven.com
