SPAR My Western Cape & Namibia Challenge 2025

Message from SPAR SPAR Aims to

Itis with great excitement that we once again welcome the incredible women of Cape Town and Namibia to their respective SPAR Women’s Challenges. This series, popularly known as ‘The Most Beautiful Race’, and collectively the biggest 10km road race for women in the world, brings together women in their tens of thousands in Durban, Mbombela, Tshwane, Maritzburg, Gqeberha and Johannesburg in races throughout the year.

Last year we focused on investing in personal growth and well-being, advocating for you to #ChooseYou. It was a year of embracing individual strengths and building a foundation of self-empowerment.

Our new theme #Twenty20Thrive builds on this, encouraging a commitment to thrive in all areas of life. It is about transforming self-discovery into action, seizing opportunities, and embracing each moment - to live fully and achieve boldly.

It’s also about endurance, strength and resilience. You will have noticed the

visuals of succulents. Just as succulents thrive in the toughest of environments (our Namibian counterparts will be very familiar with their own Desert Rose), drawing strength from within to flourish, we want to inspire every participant to harness her inner resilience and reach her personal goals. The succulent is your badge of honour!

The SPAR Group takes pride in the fact that our individually owned stores are an integral part of the communities in which they trade. Nationally we are committed to supporting women, the backbone of our communities, through education, women’s empowerment and sport.

We strongly believe that each girl has a right to an education. Your participation in the SPAR Women’s Challenge assists our Petals Project to donate sanitary pads to NGOs that will help keep girls in need in school, thereby addressing the important issue of period poverty.

With the SPAR End Gender Based Violence (GBV) campaign, we aim

to help eradicate the violence that is too often aimed at the women in our communities. We trust that our assistance to organisations within your communities that play a role in assisting and empowering the women who reach out for help, will achieve this in the not too distant future.

The SPAR women’s road races are very special to us in that they are aimed at all women, not only our elite female athletes. We do, however, salute these top athletes and reward them for their sporting prowess.

Whether in Windhoek on 29 March or Cape Town on 30 March, enjoy achieving your personal best.

As we step into the second quarter of this century, we welcome 2025 with hope, empathy, kindness, and gratitude. May it be a year in which we all thrive.

Message from SPAR

2025

It’s Time to

Thrive

Whether you have entered in the Western Cape or Namibia, it’s time to style your super trendy, on-cue green, race T-shirt and take on the 2025 SPAR Women’s Challenge.

We want you to take what you have learned, what you have packed in, what you have discarded over the years, and take yourself, the version of you that you love, and do just that, move onand thrive!

I can hardly believe that we are a quarter of a way into another century! And I get to celebrate 25 years with the SPAR Group. How the years have flown – having fun – and how privileged am I to have worked at SPAR – promoting a brand I love – and, essentially, serving you, our loyal customers.

Let me reflect on my 25 years at SPAR, and share a few things I have learned.

01I have met so many amazing people through the SPAR Women’s Challenge series. My first day on the job involved a PR photoshoot with Elana Meyer at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, our charity at the time. Elana has remained faithful to the SPAR Women’s Challenge, aligning herself with

our ethos of supporting women in sport and women’s empowerment.

02 I have interacted with and supported so many wonderful charities, and people passionate about what they do. Realising that if you don’t have champions, no matter how noble a cause, it’s unlikely to succeed. Passionate people do make the world go round.

03

Family is the most important, and I have been blessed by having a family at SPAR, who advocate family values, passion and entrepreneurship.

04 Relationships are everything. I have had the joy of forming valued relationships with retailers, suppliers, customers, media, photographers, entertainers, celebs and sporting greats, alike.

05 If you know me well, you know that my emotions are tied to my tear ducts. Over the years, I have

cried for many reasons – happy and sad. You can still be strong if you cry, and it’s okay to do so, even in a work environment.

06 Everyone has a special place in my heart – the woman who cleans our offices, the teams I work with in various departments at our Distribution Centre.

07 It’s forgivable to make a mistake. Just learn from it.

08

I am a naturally spontaneous person, but I have learned that I need to sometimes curb this spontaneity in certain situations.

09

Social media was not part of the marketing mix when I started out. Now it’s a way of life. I cannot imagine my life without my Facebook or TikTok accounts.

10 It’s important to capture the moments. Always be sensitive to the subject matter.

11

A team needs individuals committed to the same cause.

12

Success belongs to a team. A project is as good as the people working on it.

13

If you want a job done [really well] give it to a woman.

14

Every girl has the right to an education. I am passionate about supporting initiatives and people that want to end period poverty.

15

Same with GBV. It’s a scourge that we need to eradicate. At SPAR we stand together in backing institutions that support women, as well as educate our sons, boyfriends and husbands.

16

Positive energy is contagious, and being around optimistic individuals is good for my well-being.

17

It’s important to spend time with people who uplift and inspire you. I am fortunate enough to work with them in the various facets of my job.

18 One’s sense of worth does not come from what you look like, it comes from deep within.

19 You can [and often should] say no, and not feel bad about standing your ground.

20 You should not try to go it alone. Instead buy into your sisterhood. Community is important.

21Hold on to what you hold dear.

22 Don’t allow others to rob you of your peace of mind.

23

Know when to reach out, but also when to keep it to yourself.

24 I wish I was exposed to Mel Robbin’s ‘The Let Them Theory’ at the beginning of my career. Instead of attempting to exert control over a situation, let people be who they choose to be. Meanwhile you can practice who you really want to be. Instead of trying to

control outcomes, let them, and then set boundaries according to the behaviours you find acceptable.

25 It’s important to celebrate your worth as a woman.

Have fun on race day! SPAR is with you all the way. Together, let’s vibe into #Twenty20Thrive together.

From Choosing You to Thriving in 2025

Last year, the SPAR Women’s Challenge encouraged women everywhere to make the bold and beautiful choice to prioritise themselves with #ChooseYou. It was about recognising self-worth, refilling our own cups, and embracing the power of self-care. This year, we’re building on that foundation—because when you choose yourself, you unlock the potential to thrive. Welcome to #Twenty20Thrive, a celebration of growth, strength, and limitless possibility!

Thriving isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. It’s about pushing past limits, embracing joy, and showing up for yourself in every way that matters. Whether you’re running, walking, or cheering from the sidelines, this is your time to go all in, to level up, and to embrace everything that makes you powerful, resilient, and unstoppable. Every stride, every breath, every cheer from the crowd is a reminder that you are capable of more than you ever imagined.

So, lace up your running shoes, bring your best energy, and get ready for a day filled with movement, motivation, and pure magic. No matter your pace, this is your moment to thrive! We can’t wait to see you on the race course, celebrating everything that makes you strong, fearless, and ready to take on the world.

A CHANCE TO

WIN

A HYUNDAI EXTER

when you enter this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge. Remember to attend the prize-giving after the race to be eligible to win this exciting prize!

Safely

As we step into #Twenty20Thrive, let’s remember that thriving isn’t just about how fast you run or how far you go— it’s also about ensuring that you feel safe, secure, and confident every step of the way. With the excitement and anticipation of race day, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment, but staying aware of your surroundings is just as important as crossing the finish line.

A thriving community is a safe community, so let’s look out for each other and make smart choices to ensure everyone enjoys a worry-free experience.

Keep Your Essentials Close

If you’re carrying a backpack, wear it in the front while making your way through crowded areas. Once the race begins, you can shift it to your back for comfort. Keeping your belongings in sight helps prevent any unwanted surprises.

Secure Your Vehicle

In the rush of arriving and finding a spot, take a moment to double-check that your car is locked. Be mindful of remote jammers that can interfere with locking signals, and physically check your doors before heading to the race area.

Leave Valuables at Home

The best way to keep your belongings safe is to not bring them at all. If you must bring essentials, store them securely out of sight in your vehicle before leaving for the event, rather than once you arrive.

Stay Aware, Stay Connected

Stick with a friend or fellow runner when moving through busy areas, and don’t hesitate to alert event staff if you notice anything unusual. Trust your instincts—if something feels off, take action.

Thriving isn’t just about running your best race—it’s about feeling empowered, confident, and safe while doing it. Let’s step forward together, watch out for one another, and make this race a celebration of strength, safety, and sisterhood.

Surviving &

SPAR and the Saartjie Baartman Centre Standing Against Gender-Based Violence

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) knows no boundaries—it transcends class, religion, race, socioeconomic standing, education levels, and privilege. It is a pervasive crisis that affects all women, everywhere. The responsibility to combat this epidemic belongs to every South African, and SPAR, alongside the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, is committed to this crucial fight.

Domestic violence is not just a personal tragedy—it is a violation of a woman’s fundamental rights, including her right to safety, liberty, and, tragically, in many cases, her right to life itself. Despite South Africa’s progressive and inclusive constitution, violence against women continues to escalate at an alarming rate.

For women runners, the statistics surrounding GBV are more than just numbers; they are a lived reality. Every female runner has felt the weight of hypervigilance while setting out on a solo run—constantly scanning the surroundings for potential threats, altering routes for safety, and feeling the everpresent unease that comes with simply existing in public spaces.

Recognising this pressing issue, SPAR has joined forces with the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, an organisation that has been at the forefront of GBV prevention and survivor support in South Africa. Together, they are working to create a

safer and more empowered future for all women and children.

A Safe Haven for Women and Children

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children envisions a secure and just society built on human rights, where women and children can live free from violence and fear. Research underscores that the most effective way to address GBV is through a multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary approach—a model that the Centre has pioneered with remarkable success.

Established in 1999 in response to the alarming levels of violence against women and children on the Cape Flats,

the Centre provides essential, cost-free services 365 days a year. It offers a comprehensive range of programmes designed to prevent and address violence against women and children, ensuring that every survivor receives the support they need.

Comprehensive Services for Survivors

Through its survivor-centric and trauma-informed approach, the Centre provides a safe space for women and children to heal and regain their independence. Its services include:

• 24-hour crisis response programme

• Residential shelter and transitional housing

• Psycho-social support and children’s counselling

• Early childhood development services

• Substance abuse rehabilitation

• Legal assistance and child protection services

• Economic empowerment initiatives for women

These integrated services ensure that survivors’ needs are met with dignity, respect, and unwavering support.

A Milestone of Recognition

Becoming a Khuseleka Centre

As South Africa’s first one-stop centre for GBV survivors, the Saartjie Baartman Centre was honoured in May 2024 with accreditation as a National Khuseleka

Every South African has a role to play. By standing together, society can forge a safer future, free from violence and fear.

Centre by the Minister of the Department of Social Development.

Khuseleka—an isiXhosa word meaning “be safe”—represents a holistic, intersectoral approach to violence response and prevention. This model upholds the rights of victims, as enshrined in both the South African Victims Charter and United Nations Conventions aimed at protecting women and children.

The Khuseleka model sets the benchmark for collaboration between key government departments—including Justice and Constitutional Development, Health, Social Development, the National Prosecuting Authority, and the South African Police Services—alongside civil society organisations, corporate entities, and NGOs.

The Power of Partnership

SPAR’s Commitment to Change

Now, more than ever, South Africans— government departments, corporate entities, and civil society—must unite to eradicate GBV. The fight cannot be won

in isolation. It requires collective action to ensure that more women and children can live free from violence.

SPAR’s long-standing partnership with the Saartjie Baartman Centre is rooted in a shared commitment to uplifting communities, advocating for women’s rights, and embracing the power of collaboration. Through this partnership, thousands of survivors have received lifechanging support and empowerment.

Each year, SPAR’s unwavering support enables the Centre to assist nearly 8,000 women and children across 14 dedicated programmes, designed to prevent GBV and support survivors on their journey to freedom and dignity. SPAR’s commitment extends beyond financial contributions— it is an active advocate for the rights and safety of women and children across South Africa.

Without SPAR’s dedication, the Saartjie Baartman Centre would not be able to bring hope to thousands of vulnerable women and children every year.

A Call to Action Standing Together Against GBV

SPAR and the Saartjie Baartman Centre stand united in their message: Enough is enough. The time to act is now. By supporting organisations like the Saartjie Baartman Centre, SPAR continues to ensure that survivors receive the care they need, while also working to prevent GBV at its roots.

Every South African has a role to play. By standing together, society can forge a safer future, free from violence and fear.

As runners take to the road on race day, let this be a reminder that together, we can create meaningful change. #Twenty20Thrive is more than a slogan— it is a commitment to uplifting and protecting all women.

Happy running and Khuseleka!

Your Steps

Help Lives

The SPAR Women’s Challenge is not just a race; it’s a movement that empowers women and uplifts communities. This year, your participation has contributed to real change, supporting organisations that are dedicated to making a difference. One of the 2024 beneficiaries, the Boland Veterans Cricket Association (BVCA), received a substantial donation that will directly impact young girls in need.

BVCA: Empowering Girls Through the Dignity Programme

The Boland Veterans Cricket Association (BVCA) was one of three charities to receive a generous donation from the Cape Town leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge series. With R100 000 worth of sanitary pads, the BVCA’s Dignity Programme is working to ensure that no girl has to miss out on opportunities due to period poverty.

Comprising mostly male players, the BVCA believes that true empowerment begins with giving back. They are deeply committed to the development of women’s cricket and the fundamental right of girls to have equal opportunities. Through their Dignity Programme, they distribute sanitary pads to girls in need while also promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

The impact of this initiative has been deeply moving. During a recent handover at Risthof LSEN, a school for learners with learning challenges, BVCA’s James Albanie noted the overwhelming gratitude of the students and faculty. He described the moment as “almost bringing me to tears”, reinforcing the importance of such support.

Beyond schools, the BVCA has reached out to various sports clubs and community organisations, including:

• Strand Rugby Club & Jaguars Netball Club – Supporting young athletes in need.

• Callas Foundation in Bridgetown –Assisting GBV victims and survivors, providing both emotional and material support.

• Thula Baby Project in Tokai –Helping single mothers with postnatal care and future planning.

• Milakah Foundation & Strandfontein Ladies’ Softball Community – Providing sanitary pads to young female athletes.

• HRSF in Hanover Park – Extending their reach to another vulnerable community.

Albanie and his team continue their outreach, ensuring that donations from the SPAR Petals Project reach the most vulnerable. “I am humbled by your generosity,” he shared. “The need keeps growing, and so does the goodwill.”

2025 RACE BENEFICIARIES

Beyond the BVCA Dignity Programme, this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge is supporting other incredible organisations:

RETURNING BENEFICIARY

• Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children

A safe haven for women and children escaping gender-based violence (GBV), providing shelter, legal assistance, and counselling.

• Nonceba Family Counselling Centre (Khayelitsha)

A lifeline for victims of abuse, offering trauma counselling, family support, and a refuge for women and children in crisis.

NEW BENEFICIARIES

• Against Period Poverty (APP)

Founded by Lindsay Adams, APP works to ensure that adolescent girls don’t miss out on education due to lack of menstrual hygiene products. Adams, passionate about breaking the stigma around menstruation, believes that “to help even one girl is to restore dignity and opportunity.”

Through your participation in the SPAR Women’s Challenge, you have directly contributed to these lifechanging initiatives. Your steps are making an impact, ensuring that more women and children can thrive with dignity, confidence, and opportunity.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are running towards a brighter, more empowered future!

Hope to

It is the year to #Twenty20Thrive! What a great theme. Too often we focus on just surviving, when in fact, we should be focusing on thriving. The Hope for Life Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that its beneficiaries thrive, live fulfilling lives, and break the cycle of poverty, creating a brighter future for themselves and generations to come. For the past two years, the SPAR Women’s Challenge has played an integral role in supporting this transformative journey.

Hope for Life Foundation operates multiple projects focused on the social and economic upliftment of vulnerable women and children. With SPAR’s involvement, the foundation has been able to expand its efforts, particularly in one of its most cherished initiatives—Hope Baby House.

Hope Baby House

In March 2023, Hope Baby House opened its doors to five babies, marking an incredible milestone. It was a momentous occasion as these little ones were welcomed from the hospital and placed on a path to finding loving, forever homes. However, the demand quickly exceeded capacity, with more and more requests to take in abandoned infants. With every family knowing the high costs of raising a baby—nappies, formula, wipes, and more—it became clear that additional funding was needed. One nappy change alone costs approximately N$4, and with numerous daily changes, the expenses add up quickly.

Thanks to the generous donation from the SPAR Women’s Challenge in 2024,

Hope Baby House expanded its capacity to care for sixteen babies. Today, a dedicated team of ten carers operates around the clock, ensuring that each baby receives the love, nourishment, and care they deserve. Their efforts are complemented by a full-time social worker, who diligently investigates each child’s background to secure the best possible permanent placement. Whether through reunification with family, placement with a relative, or adoption into a forever family, every successful transition is a moment of celebration. As of now, preparations are underway for another child to join their new family.

Since its inception in March 2023, Hope Baby House has provided care for 43 children, with 20 of them being adopted and five reunited with their biological families.

Send a Child to School

Aligned with the vision of thriving, the foundation launched the Send a Child to School Project in 2021. This initiative identifies vulnerable children and provides them with the support they need throughout their academic journey. Assistance includes covering school fees, supplying uniforms and stationery, providing supplementary workbooks, and ensuring access to additional reading materials. A strong emphasis is placed on literacy, as the ability to read unlocks countless opportunities for lifelong learning and success.

The results have been extraordinary. Many of the programme’s beneficiaries have shown remarkable improvements in their reading skills, translating into higher academic performance. The project started in 2021 with just one beneficiary; today, it proudly supports 57 children, equipping them with the tools they need to succeed.

Bare Necessities

Recognising that many mothers face immense hardship despite their best efforts, Hope for Life Foundation seeks to support those who need a helping hand rather than separating children from loving parents. Through the Bare Necessities program, SPAR’s support has helped provide clothing and

toiletry parcels to pregnant women, new mothers, and vulnerable women in need. Beyond these essentials, the initiative offers emotional support and guidance, encouraging women to leverage their skills to improve their circumstances and provide for their families.

Since delivering its first parcel in May 2020, the foundation has distributed over 2,200 personalised care packages. The impact of this support extends far beyond material aid—beneficiaries have gone on to complete their education, pursue careers in counselling, nursing, and early childhood development, escape abusive relationships, and even become homeowners. Some have successfully carried pregnancies to term after multiple miscarriages, while others have helped their children pass school when it once seemed impossible. Each success story is a testament to the power of compassionate support.

The Power of Thriving

A helping hand can be the difference between simply surviving and truly thriving. SPAR Women’s Challenge is honoured to play a role in the transformative work of Hope for Life Foundation. By standing together, lives are changed, communities are strengthened, and futures are redefined. Here’s to a future where every woman and child is empowered to thrive!

Glenrose Xaba’s triumph as the first South African SPAR Grand Prix winner in years

Glenrose Xaba made history last year, becoming the first South African since 2019 to claim victory in the SPAR Grand Prix! With unwavering determination and a relentless drive, she’s now setting her sights on building even further on this incredible achievement in 2025. At the grand awards ceremony held at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg, Glenrose was rewarded for her extraordinary feat with a wellearned prize of R200,000, alongside an additional R75,000 for being the top-performing South African in the competition. “I was determined to win the SPAR Grand Prix again,” Glenrose shared, her voice brimming with pride. “I made so many sacrifices to make it happen. And if that wasn’t enough, she went on to conquer the Cape Town Marathon, smashing Gerda Steyn’s national record in her very first marathon attempt.

Semenya has no doubt that Glenrose’s journey is only beginning.

“She’s determined, disciplined and takes instruction well,” said Semenya. “I think she will go very far.”

At the awards ceremony, Mpudi Maubane, SPAR National PR, Communications, and Sponsorship Manager, celebrated Glenrose’s triumph,

saying, “SPAR is very proud of Glenrose and her efforts. We recognise the hard work and dedication she and the other top ten athletes and age group category winners put into their success and salute them as leading athletes that inspire so many. We are grateful for these athletes and the many thousands of athletes who took part in the SPAR Grand Prix series and hope they encourage their friends to take part next year so that together we can empower women and help develop road running in South Africa.”

A Legacy of Women’s Running

The SPAR Women’s Challenge & Grand Prix Series

The SPAR Women’s Challenge series isn’t just a race—it’s an institution. As one of the world’s largest road races dedicated to women, it’s a true celebration of fitness, competition, and camaraderie. Bringing together South Africa’s elite female athletes and thousands of enthusiastic recreational runners, it has become a highlight on the country’s sporting calendar.

Born in 1992 as a fun and inclusive way to get women of all backgrounds and fitness levels moving, the race has grown into a powerhouse event. Participants can choose between a 10km run, a 10km walk, or a 5km fun run, with a day full of excitement, entertainment, and prize-giving to cap it all off.

Cape Town first hosted a leg of the series in 1993, with legendary runner Elana Meyer claiming victory. Fast forward to 2023, and the race celebrated three decades of women’s road running in the Mother City—proof of its enduring impact, even after a brief pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2007, the competitive stakes were raised with the launch of the SPAR Grand Prix Series, inviting professional runners to compete in multiple regional races for major cash prizes. The top 10 runners in the open category, along with the top three in each age group, all earn prize money, with Grand Prix points awarded based on their race performances.

Throughout the year, the SPAR Women’s Challenge races take place in Cape Town, Durban, Mbombela, Tshwane, Maritzburg, Gqeberha, and Johannesburg, along with an additional race in Windhoek, Namibia. However, only select races include the Grand Prix component.

Race, Thrive, Win

Beyond the championship titles, the SPAR Women’s Challenge offers participants the chance to win amazing prizes! Among the most coveted is a massive R30,000 worth of SPAR vouchers, along with exciting lucky draw opportunities. This years entrants over 18 have the chance to win a brand-new Hyundai Exeter valued at R245,000!

Each race’s lucky draw winner has traditionally joined an elite group of VIP guests at the SPAR Grand Prix Awards, where the final draw determined the ultimate car winner. And in an incredible streak, the Cape Town race proved to be a lucky charm, producing back-to-back grand prize winners:

• 2023 winner: Jannika van Niekerk

• 2024 winner: Benita Horne

This year, the competition takes an exciting turn!

Hyundai is sponsoring five vehicles for the SPAR Women’s Challenge, which will be awarded as prizes across five key provincial races, including Cape Town. This means that one lucky draw winner at each of these five races will drive home in a brandnew car—no final draw needed!

Run Strong, Thrive Stronger

The Power of Movement and Mindset

In a world where life moves at an unrelenting pace, finding strength—both physically and mentally—is the key to thriving. The SPAR Women’s Challenge has always been about more than just running; it’s a movement that empowers women to embrace their strength, set new goals, and build resilience. This year’s theme, #Twenty20Thrive, is all about pushing boundaries, celebrating progress, and unlocking the best version of yourself. And who better to embody this spirit than Mathew Mbambo— Mr SA Top 5 finalist 2024, fitness trainer, athlete, and advocate for women’s empowerment in fitness.

Living for the Experience

For Mathew, life is about seizing every opportunity and saying ‘yes’ to new experiences. At just 26 years old, he has already immersed himself in multiple passions, from sports and fitness to music and media.

“I very rarely say no to something,” he says. “I like being active, but I also just love being involved—whether in sport, film, music, or the arts. Every experience, good or bad, is valuable. I try to stay optimistic and enjoy life as much as I can.”

This philosophy extends to his fitness journey. A former rugby player and experienced runner, he has conquered marathons and half marathons and is currently training for a triathlon and a Half Ironman. He understands the power of movement—not just as a physical discipline but as a tool for personal growth.

Finding Inspiration in Everyday People

Rather than looking up to celebrities, Mathew draws inspiration from the people around him. His mentors are friends, coaches, and individuals who push him to be better.

“My biggest inspirations aren’t famous people,” he says. “They are my friends, my coaches, and my mother. My mom has been through so much, and she’s given me the freedom to live my life the way I want to. That’s something I never take for granted.”

His admiration for strong, determined individuals fuels his passion for helping others unlock their potential, especially women entering traditionally maledominated fitness spaces.

Changing the Game for Women in Fitness

As a personal trainer and CrossFit coach, Mathew spends his days guiding individuals through their fitness journeys, and he has a special commitment to empowering women.

“Most of my clients are women,” he explains. “For a lot of them, stepping into a gym or starting a fitness journey can be intimidating. Gyms and weightlifting have been male-dominated spaces for so long. But I want to change that.”

Through his coaching, he encourages women to embrace their strength and set ambitious goals, proving they are capable of far more than they realise.

“The best part of my job is watching

my clients break through their own limitations,” he says. “It’s incredibly empowering to see them succeed, not because someone told them they had to, but because they chose to.”

The Power of Support and Community

Fitness is not just about lifting weights or clocking in kilometres—it’s about building a community that supports and uplifts one another.

“It’s easy to assume that fitness is an individual journey, but having the right people around you makes all the difference,” Mathew says. “When I entered Mr. South Africa, I didn’t realise how many people were rooting for me. It was only when I put myself out there that I truly understood the impact of a strong support system.”

This lesson applies directly to events like the SPAR Women’s Challenge. Whether you’re running your first 5km

or aiming for a personal best, the power of a supportive community pushes you forward. The camaraderie, shared goals, and collective spirit of women running together is what makes this race special.

Overcoming the Mental Barriers

Starting any fitness journey comes with challenges—not just physical ones, but mental obstacles as well. Doubt, fear, and comparison often hold people back from reaching their full potential. Mathew understands this deeply and works to help his clients overcome these barriers.

“You see perfect fitness transformations on social media, and it makes people think they aren’t good enough,” he says. “The reality is, progress is messy. It’s about showing up, pushing through setbacks, and celebrating small victories.”

For those nervous about entering their first race, his advice is simple: Just start.

“You don’t need to be an elite athlete to run. You don’t have to be in perfect shape to begin training. What matters is that you take that first step. Your journey is your own, and every milestone is worth celebrating.”

Thriving Beyond the Finish Line

The SPAR Women’s Challenge is more than a race—it’s a symbol of strength, resilience, and empowerment. Whether you’re running, walking, or cheering from the sidelines, you are part of something bigger: a movement that inspires women to push limits and thrive.

As we embrace #Twenty20Thrive, let’s take a page from Mathew’s book: say yes to new experiences, support one another, and find joy in the journey. Because when you run strong, you thrive even stronger.

Training Tips to Thrive

For women preparing to take on the SPAR Women’s Challenge, Mathew shares practical training insights:

1. Find Joy in the Journey

“It’s not just about the finish line; it’s about how training makes you feel. Find what excites you—whether that’s running, lifting, or even dancing—and make it part of your routine.”

2. Build Strength, Not Just Speed

“Strength training isn’t just for guys. It helps prevent injuries, builds confidence, and makes running feel easier. Even bodyweight exercises like squats and lunges can make a difference.”

3. Train Like You Race

“If you’re running a 10km, don’t just train on the treadmill. Get outside, run on different terrains, and test your pacing so your body is ready for race day.”

4. Fuel Your Body Righ

“Hydration, protein, and carbs all play a role. Don’t just eat clean—eat enough! Your body needs fuel to perform.”

5. Show Up for Yourself

“No one is motivated all the time. But discipline and consistency will get you to the finish line. Keep showing up, even on the tough days.”

Starting any fitness journey comes with challenges— not just physical ones, but mental obstacles as well.

OTG ACTIVE’s Zeal Rib Collection, for Every Moment

This year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge series theme centres on choosing ways to live a life that thrives and Sportsmans Warehouse is here to help.

Steven Bartlett, British entrepreneur, investor and host of one of Europe’s biggest podcasts, often hones in on the thing we only realise we’ve got until it’s gone: our health. His physical health is his most critical foundation—the part that everything important in his life is built upon.

“Everything I am, every goal I have, every dream I have, every company I founded, my dog, my girlfriend, my mum – all of it rests on this tectonic plate that I didn’t even know was there, called my health. You remove my health; you remove everything I have. If you remove my dog, I still have everything else. If you remove my girlfriend, I still have everything

else. But if you remove my health, I lose everything.”

This is the lifestyle that women’s activewear brand, OTG ACTIVE, is dedicated to. It’s a brand that delivers well beyond the gym, a run, or a fitness class. Each piece is mindfully made and designed in South Africa, and is an investment that gives us a chance to get closer to your better selves.

No matter what activity you’re doing – grocery shopping, running, walking – you can give it your all, because you’re in comfortable, versatile activewear that allows you to move (and inevitably, sweat), and look good while doing it.

It’s extremely hard to pick favourites from the OTG range, but we finally managed make a choice.

OTG Zeal Rib Collection

The zeal rib collection is the pinnacle of comfortable, versatile, and stylish activewear. Layer it, dress it up, dress it down – whatever you do, it’ll be your timeless wardrobe staple.

The magic is in the ribbed fabric. This unique texture feels buttery soft against the skin, has a natural resistance to wrinkling, and holds its original shape longer than traditional smooth fabrics. One of our favourite parts of this fabric is its gentle compression effect. It holds everything in place, while still being breathable and flexible.

It’s not about chasing unrealistic goals - it’s about consistency, daily habits, and committing to the small things that are easy to do and so easy not to do.

The relaxing, neutral colour range – black, navy, coffee, chalk, midnight plum and elemental blue – are the building blocks for endless outfit combinations. The palette that blurs the lines between exercise and leisure time.

Since it has become trendy to wear your activewear outside the gym, tights have become arguably the most important item in your wardrobe. We’ve noticed that women genuinely feel more confident in the body-hugging fit of tights, which highlight the natural curves of their body.

The zeal rib tights range comes in all the popular styles – shorts, 7/8, long and flared – catering to every season, style preference, and height.

A well-fitted sports bra is hard to come by. To the point where, once you’ve found the one, you’ll pull it out of the dirty washing basket to wear it again, instead of settling for a clean bra that isn’t a good fit.

OTG is known for its sports bras. The zeal rib crop tops are designed for low-impact exercise and everyday wear.

They’re soft, stretchy, and lightweight, they’re wire-free (more comfortable than having the rigidity of underwire), and they have a wide elastic hem that doesn’t roll up during vigorous exercise.

While your tights and sports bra are the foundation, your top is the icing on the cake. Just like the zeal rib tights range, the tops come in all the best styles – tanks, tees, and crops. Not too tight, not too loose, flattering cuts, hold it all in – they really are the cherry on top.

If you want to thrive in #Twenty20Thrive, forget the big, bold resolutions. It’s not about chasing unrealistic goals - it’s about consistency, daily habits, and committing to the small things that are easy to do and so easy not to do. If you’re striving toward a goal of optimal health that feels out of reach, OTG is designed to help you get there.

It’s available exclusively at Sportsmans Warehouse nationally, and online at otgactive.com.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of strength, resilience, and the power of women thriving in all aspects of life. As you push yourself to run strong, your skin and beauty routine should support that unstoppable energy. The Path to

Looking Back, Growing Stronger, Moving Forward

The journey to personal growth is a continuous one, and as we move forward, it is essential to pause and reflect on where we’ve been. Reflection is not about dwelling on the past, but rather about acknowledging the lessons learned, celebrating our triumphs, and using them as stepping stones toward an even brighter future.

TheSPAR Women’s Challenge has always been more than just a race—it is a movement that inspires participants to choose themselves, invest in their well-being, and strive for something greater. This year, as we embrace the theme #Twenty20Thrive, we build upon the foundation laid last year with #ChooseYou, reinforcing the idea that thriving is the natural progression of choosing yourself.

How to Reflect in Your Own Life

Reflection is a powerful tool for growth and self-improvement. Here are some ways to incorporate reflection into your life:

1. JOURNALING:

Take a few minutes each day to write about your experiences, thoughts, and emotions. This helps you process events and recognise patterns in your behaviour.

2. GRATITUDE PRACTICE: Reflect on what you are grateful for. Expressing gratitude can shift your mindset towards positivity and appreciation.

3. MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS: Spend time in quiet contemplation, focusing on your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This helps build self-awareness.

4. SEEK FEEDBACK: Talk to trusted friends, family, or mentors about your journey. Gaining different perspectives can provide valuable insights.

5. SET GOALS AND REVIEW PROGRESS:

Look back on your achievements and challenges. Adjust your plans based on what has worked and what needs improvement.

#Twenty20Thrive: Elevating the Journey

Last year, #ChooseYou encouraged participants to prioritise themselves, their health, and their well-being. This year, #Twenty20Thrive takes that commitment further, challenging each of us to not just choose ourselves but to actively thrive in all aspects of our lives. Thriving means pushing limits, embracing challenges, and using past experiences as motivation to become even stronger.

The reflections from last year’s race showcase the joy and gratitude felt by so many. These shared moments remind us of why we participate—not just for the physical achievement but for the camaraderie, the celebration of self-care, and the opportunity to uplift others.

Walking, Running, Thriving Together

As we put on our running shoes and step onto the start line this year, let’s carry forward the energy, the lessons, and the memories of past races. Let’s

Looking Back to Move Forward

celebrate the incredible journey of growth, resilience, and joy. This year is about thriving—not just on the racecourse but in our personal lives, careers, and communities.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge is not just an event; it is a commitment to ourselves and to each other. Reflect, embrace, and thrive—because this year, it’s all about #Twenty20Thrive.

25 Affirmations for #Twenty20Thrive

In the journey of life, words hold the power to uplift, inspire, and transform. For women striving to embrace their fullest potential in 2025, affirmations serve as daily reminders of inner strength, resilience, and the capacity to thrive. Here are a few affirmations, quotes, and mantras—infused with inspiration, light-heartedness, power, and a touch of humour—to accompany you on your path to self-empowerment.

Affirmations are more than just feelgood phrases; they are a powerful tool for nurturing mental health and fostering personal growth. Rooted in the concept of positive psychology, affirmations help rewire the brain, encouraging self-belief and resilience in the face of life’s challenges. For women aiming to thrive in 2025, affirmations offer a lifeline of positivity, helping to navigate the complexities of modern life with grace and confidence.

At their core, affirmations work by challenging and replacing negative thought patterns. It’s easy to get caught in cycles of self-doubt, especially when facing setbacks or societal pressures. Affirmations act as a counterbalance, reinforcing self-worth and capability. For instance, repeating phrases like “I am capable of overcoming any

challenge” helps diminish the impact of self-critical thoughts, creating space for a more empowering narrative.

Science backs the effectiveness of affirmations, particularly in reducing stress and enhancing self-esteem. Studies have shown that practising affirmations activates the brain’s reward centres, fostering a sense of motivation and achievement. By focusing on positive self-statements, individuals can cultivate a mindset that prioritises growth and adaptability—two key ingredients for thriving mental health.

Affirmations also serve as a daily act of self-care. They encourage mindfulness by bringing attention to the present moment and aligning thoughts with values and goals. Saying, “I am the author of my story,” not only shifts focus away from external distractions but also emphasises personal agency, reminding you that you have the power to shape your destiny.

Moreover, affirmations create a ripple effect. When you cultivate positivity within, it radiates outward, influencing your relationships and interactions. A person who believes in their own worth is more likely to set healthy boundaries, seek supportive connections, and contribute meaningfully to their community. This holistic impact makes affirmations an invaluable tool for thriving—not just as individuals but as part of a collective.

Incorporating affirmations into your routine can be as simple as repeating them in the mirror each morning, writing them in a journal, or even setting reminders on your phone. The consistency of practice is key; over time, these affirmations become second nature, transforming your mental landscape into one of resilience and hope.

In 2025, as we embrace #Twenty20Thrive, affirmations are a reminder that thriving starts within. By committing to uplifting self-talk and a positive mindset, you lay the foundation for a life filled with purpose, strength, and joy.

1:

“I am the architect of my life; I build its foundation and choose its contents.”

This affirmation highlights your autonomy over life. You are not a bystander; you are the builder of your future. Every decision, every plan, every effort you put in lays a brick in the foundation of your dreams. Embrace this mindset to step into a more intentional life, one brick at a time.

2:

“I possess the qualities needed to be extremely successful.”

Success is not an elusive goal; it’s the result of recognising your strengths and building on them. Whether it’s perseverance, creativity, or kindness, identifying and affirming your unique traits can help you unlock doors that seem out of reach.

3: “I wake up today with strength in my heart and clarity in my mind.”

Mornings can be daunting, but starting the day with a focused and empowered mindset sets the tone for success. Whether it’s preparing for a meeting, tackling chores, or chasing a dream, this affirmation reminds you of the strength and clarity already within you.

4: “I am a powerhouse; I am indestructible.”

This bold affirmation reminds you of your inner warrior. Challenges may come, but your core—your resilience— remains unshakeable. It’s about seeing yourself as a force of nature, unstoppable and fiercely committed to your purpose.

5: “I radiate beauty, charm, and grace.”

This is not about superficial beauty but a reminder of the light you bring to the world. Your kindness, humour, and warmth create a charm that makes you unique. By affirming your grace, you acknowledge and nurture your inner beauty.

6:

“My potential

is

limitless, and I choose where to spend my energy.”

We often feel drained by responsibilities and expectations. This affirmation reframes your perspective, reminding you that energy is a currency. Spend it wisely on things that align with your goals, values, and joy.

7:

“I am courageous, and I stand up for myself.”

Standing up for yourself isn’t always easy, but it is necessary. This affirmation is a declaration of your bravery, ensuring you protect your boundaries, speak your truth, and advocate for your needs unapologetically.

8: “I am a diamond; it is time for me to shine.”

Diamonds are formed under immense pressure, and so are you. This affirmation celebrates the trials you’ve overcome and the brilliance you’re ready to showcase. Shine bright!

9:

“I forgive those who have harmed me in my past and peacefully detach from them.”

Forgiveness doesn’t mean condoning hurtful actions; it means freeing yourself from their hold on you. This affirmation is about peace—letting go of the weight of grudges and embracing freedom.

10:

“I am adventurous; I overcome fears by following my dreams.”

Life is an adventure, and fear is often the gatekeeper of growth. This affirmation invites you to lean into the discomfort of the unknown, embracing challenges as opportunities to grow and thrive.

11: “I am a warrior; I will overcome this.”

When faced with difficulties, this affirmation serves as a battle cry. You’ve faced challenges before, and you’ve emerged stronger. You will do it again because a warrior never backs down.

12:

“I am in charge of how I feel, and today I choose happiness.”

Happiness isn’t something that happens to us; it’s a choice. By affirming this, you take control of your emotions and your day, reclaiming your power to cultivate positivity.

13: “I am my own superhero.”

You don’t need a cape or someone to rescue you. You are your hero, saving yourself time and time again. This affirmation is a light-hearted yet powerful reminder of your self-reliance.

14: “I am not a

morning person, but I am a rising star.”

Humour is a great way to start the day. This affirmation acknowledges the struggle of mornings while celebrating your potential. You may not leap out of bed, but you’re still destined for greatness.

15: “I am a magnet for miracles.”

By affirming this, you open yourself to the unexpected. Miracles, big or small, often come when we least expect them. This mantra is a reminder to stay hopeful and embrace the unknown.

16: “I am the queen of my domain.”

Whether it’s your career, home, or personal life, you are the sovereign. This affirmation inspires confidence and a sense of authority over your own life, encouraging you to rule it with grace and intention.

17: “I am a masterpiece in progress.”

Growth takes time, and that’s okay. This affirmation celebrates the journey, not the destination. You are constantly evolving, learning, and becoming— embrace every stage as a part of your unique masterpiece.

18:

“I am the CEO of my life; I hire and fire accordingly.”

This affirmation adds a touch of humour to the serious task of setting

boundaries. Whether it’s relationships, habits, or commitments, you have the authority to decide what stays and what goes.

19: “I am a limited edition; there is only one me.”

This affirmation celebrates your uniqueness. There’s no one like you, and that’s your superpower. It’s a light-hearted reminder to own your individuality and let it shine.

20: “I am fluent in the language of kindness.”

Kindness is a strength, not a weakness. This affirmation encourages you to lead with empathy, for yourself and others, recognising that kindness creates a ripple effect of positivity.

21: “I am a magnet for positivity and good vibes.”

This affirmation shifts your mindset to attract uplifting experiences. By focusing on positivity, you open yourself to a world of abundance and joy.

22: “I am the author of my story, and I write each chapter with intention.”

Life is a narrative, and you hold the pen. This affirmation reminds you to be deliberate in your choices, ensuring that each chapter reflects your values and aspirations.

23: “I am a warrior, not a worrier.”

This playful affirmation encourages you to replace anxiety with action. It’s a reminder that you have the strength to tackle challenges head-on rather than letting worry hold you back.

24: “I am a woman of worth, and I deserve the best.”

Recognising your value is key to thriving. This affirmation reinforces your belief in deserving the very best, whether it’s opportunities, relationships, or self-care.

25: “I am unstoppable; my dreams are within reach.”

As you work towards your goals, this affirmation becomes your mantra. It reminds you that nothing is out of reach when you are determined, capable, and unstoppable.

These affirmations are more than just words; they are anchors of hope, power, and joy. By incorporating them into your daily life, you can transform your mindset, celebrate your strengths, and thrive in 2025 and beyond. Speak them aloud, write them down, or simply carry them in your heart as you journey forward.

Empowering Women with Intellectual Disabilities through Sisterhood and Support

As we approach another exciting edition of the SPAR Women’s Challenge, the theme for this year’s race, #Twenty20Thrive, captures the spirit of growth, resilience, and empowerment.

The Alta du Toit Centre, a home for adults with intellectual disabilities, is proud to kick off its partnership with SPAR, with the preparation of the goodie bags for this year’s race taking place at the Centre’s protective workshop. #Twenty20Thrive resonates with the mission of the Alta du Toit Centre. It is not just about surviving but thriving—living a life full of purpose, achievement, and fulfilment.

Opened in April 1978, the Centre’s invaluable support to adults with intellectual disabilities. Since its beginning, the Centre has been committed to its mission to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to lead fulfilling and self-determined lives— to thrive!

What began as a small effort by Reverend Daan du Toit and his wife, Mrs. du Toit, to create a safe space for their daughter Alta—who had Down Syndrome—has evolved into a beacon

of care and development for adults with intellectual disabilities in Cape Town. Over time, the Centre has broadened its scope, responding to the growing needs of its community. The Alta du Toit Centre offers a comprehensive range of services that include residential care, work skills training, life skills development, and medical support. Each service is designed to develop individuals who are able to achieve their full potential and live independently, promoting a sense of dignity and pride.

While the Alta du Toit Centre has always been focused on the care of adults, a portion of its work involves supporting the next generation of adults with intellectual disabilities, who often face additional barriers in accessing opportunities for growth and development. The Centre is connected with Paarl School and Chere Bothas School to include their students in the Centre’s protective workshop for realworld experiences every few weeks— empowering them not only as individuals

but also as part of the larger differentlyabled community—proving that they can be part of the economic growth of our community.

“Packing goodie bags means we get to actually be part of the fun on the day. The workshop plays music, and we all get to work together, so it’s fun. We don’t always get to be part because of our different abilities, but this way, we get to be part too.” —One of the residents of the Alta du Toit Centre.

By collaborating with SPAR for the packing of goodie bags for the SPAR Women’s Challenge, the Centre is able to provide more employment opportunities to its residents while also contributing to a cause that uplifts and empowers women. For the women at the Centre, being part of this initiative brings a sense of pride and purpose—thank you, SPAR, for this awesome opportunity!

The Centre is not just a care home, it’s a warm, nurturing environment where people make meaningful connections and discover a sense of belonging that the outside world cannot provide. In the Centre, there are friendships that span 20 years and others that are newer but just as meaningful. We house people for the duration of their lives, and they create bonds that go beyond just friendship, family ties are created within our home. The value of fostering a sense of family within the Centre cannot be overstated. The concept of sisterhood, for one, is about more than just shared experiences, it’s about supporting each other’s growth, celebrating successes, and lifting each other up through challenges. At the Alta du Toit Centre, this belief is woven into everything we do—from group therapies to team sports, we uplift one another because we are one big family!

The Alta du Toit Centre provides more than just medical care and life skills training, it nurtures the emotional and social well-being of its residents. The Centre’s residential care programmes offer a safe, nurturing environment where individuals can develop emotionally and socially, and feel supported as they work towards their version of independence.

Part of the residential programme at the Centre is to provide activities for the residents, just like in the outside world. Oftentimes, this means the Centre hosts its own fun walks, boere sport days, or

even the Special Olympics. The Centre is proud to house a few Olympians and even a national runner. Adults with intellectual disabilities are able to do more, and we are so grateful to SPAR for this opportunity to do more and hopefully see it grow into something bigger.

The partnership with SPAR amplifies this sense of community, as the Centre’s involvement in the goodie bag packing for the SPAR Women’s Challenge provides a tangible way for the women to contribute to the success of an event that celebrates empowerment. With thanks to Top Events, a long-standing partner of the Centre for connecting the workshop and SPAR, we are honoured and so grateful for the initiative SPAR has taken to make a difference in the lives of adults with intellectual disabilities.

Here are seven remarkable destinations to add to your 2025 bucket list.

Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is a living testament to nature’s ability to thrive under challenging conditions. Spanning over 22,000 square kilometres, this vast wilderness is dominated by the iconic Etosha salt pan, which transforms into a shimmering oasis during the rainy season. This seasonal spectacle attracts an incredible diversity of wildlife, from towering elephants and graceful giraffes to elusive lions and endangered black rhinos. Etosha’s thriving ecosystems are a reminder of the delicate balance that sustains life, even in arid conditions.

Exploring Etosha offers countless opportunities to witness the resilience of the natural world. Safari drives along well-maintained roads reveal vibrant scenes of animals gathering at waterholes. At the same time, the park’s wide-open landscapes provide a backdrop for stunning photographs, particularly at sunset when the skies are ablaze with colour.

The Namib Desert and Sossusvlei

The Namib Desert, one of the oldest on Earth, is a place where time seems to stand still. Its iconic red dunes, particularly those of Sossusvlei, are a striking symbol of thriving against all odds. Despite the extreme conditions, life persists here, with unique flora like the welwitschia plant adapting to survive in this harsh environment.

Visiting Sossusvlei is an otherworldly experience. Climbing the towering dunes, such as Dune 45 or the aptly named Big Daddy, offers an unforgettable perspective as the golden sunlight casts dramatic shadows across the landscape. At Deadvlei, the skeletal remains of ancient trees create a surreal tableau against the backdrop of orange sand and azure skies, making it a photographer’s dream. The Namib Desert reminds us of the enduring power of resilience and adaptation.

Swakopmund

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib Desert, Swakopmund is a charming coastal town where adventure meets cultural heritage. Erindi’s commitment to sustainability makes it a prime example of thriving through thoughtful stewardship of the natural world.

Skeleton Coast

Dubbed the “Land God Made in Anger,” the Skeleton Coast is a hauntingly beautiful stretch along Namibia’s Atlantic coast. Its fog-shrouded shores, dotted with shipwrecks and dramatic dunes, exude an otherworldly charm. Despite its harsh name and stark appearance, the Skeleton Coast is a place where unique ecosystems thrive.

Visitors to the Skeleton Coast can explore the remnants of shipwrecks, such as the Eduard Bohlen, which now lies stranded in the desert sands. Seal colonies at Cape Cross provide a lively contrast, with thousands of Cape fur seals basking on the rocky shores. For an aerial perspective, scenic flights reveal the dramatic meeting of desert and ocean, offering an unforgettable view of this enigmatic landscape. The Skeleton Coast is a reminder of nature’s power to endure and inspire.

Each destination tells a story of resilience, adaptation, and growth, perfectly highlighting our journey towards a thriving life. As you plan your travels for 2025, let Namibia’s landscapes and cultures inspire you to thrive in your journey.

Windhoek

Namibia’s capital city, Windhoek, is a vibrant fusion of tradition and innovation. As the economic and cultural heart of the country, Windhoek reflects Namibia’s journey of growth and development. Its diverse population, bustling markets, and rich history make it a dynamic urban destination.

In Windhoek, travellers can immerse themselves in local culture by visiting markets like the Namibia Craft Centre, where handmade crafts and artwork showcase the talents of Namibian artisans. Historical landmarks, such as the Christuskirche and the Independence Memorial Museum, provide insights into the nation’s past and its path to independence. The city’s culinary scene is equally diverse, offering traditional

dishes like kapana (grilled meat) and potjiekos (stew) alongside modern dining experiences. Windhoek captures the essence of thriving through its blend of heritage and progress.

Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region)

The Caprivi Strip, now known as the Zambezi Region, is a lush, green haven that contrasts dramatically with Namibia’s arid landscapes. This narrow stretch of land, bordered by rivers and wetlands, is a sanctuary for wildlife and a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The region’s thriving ecosystems support hippos, crocodiles, and an astonishing variety of bird species.

Exploring the Caprivi Strip offers a tranquil escape into nature. Canoeing along the Zambezi or Kwando rivers provides a serene way to observe wildlife, while fishing enthusiasts can test their skills against the feisty tigerfish. Birdwatchers will be delighted by sightings of species such as the African fish eagle and the vibrant malachite kingfisher.
