Challenge Your

It is that time of the year again where SPAR and Central Gauteng Athletics host the most beautiful race on our road running calendar. We are pleased as a federation to be associated with an event that not only attracts thousands of women participants but is also intentional about bettering the lives of women.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge is not just a race, it is a lifestyle. A race that is about the spirit of camaraderie for women. The SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi throughout the years of its existence has encouraged diversity and attracted thousands of women.

As a federation we are encouraged by the commitment of SPAR to addressing the serious issues of exclusion, among others, that women and young girls are faced with in our communities and organisations.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi has catalysed one of our goals as a federation of ensuring that we develop and support more women participating in athletics.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi is a cornerstone event which propels the interests of athletes to want to perform to their optimum, so they can find themselves participating at World-class events such as the Olympics. We rank

the SPAR Women’s Challenge and SPAR Grand Prix series among the elite events in the province and the country.

Their commitment to the goodwill of our women athletes ranks high because, even during these stringent economic times, the event has continued to increase their offerings and incentives for elite runners.

Best wishes to all the participants, who continue to show up and support this event annually.

Central Gauteng Athletics would like to thank all the participants, the sponsors and partners, the media for your support, and a big shoutout to the entire organising team of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi led by Marlene and Cornel.

Our goal as a federation is ensuring that we develop and support more women participating in athletics

to Transform A Smile

Founded 24 years ago, Smile Foundation emerged from a simple yet profound act of compassion. Thabile, the mother of a young girl named Thando who suffered from facial nerve paralysis, sought help from Nelson Mandela. This plea led to a pivotal call to Marc Lubner, resulting in surgery for Thando and the birth of Smile Foundation. Today, the foundation has assisted over 5,066 children from disadvantaged backgrounds, offering them a chance at a better, more joyful future.

Smile Foundation focuses on treating facial conditions such as cleft lips, cleft palates, craniofacial abnormalities, and severe burns. Beyond surgeries, the organisation is committed to enhancing the public healthcare system by investing in medical equipment, facility upgrades, and professional development for healthcare workers. This holistic approach ensures that their impact is sustainable and far-reaching.

At the heart of Smile Foundation’s inspiring journey is Toni Jabour, the Marketing Manager whose strategic vision and unwavering passion have propelled the organisation into national recognition. Toni’s story is a compelling blend of professional acumen and personal dedication, making her an exemplary figure in the non-profit sector.

Toni’s journey with Smile Foundation began ten years ago, bringing with her

a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Psychology and experience in marketing for a national retailer. Her leap into the non-profit world was fuelled by a deep-seated passion for helping children. Recalling her excitement upon being hired, Toni remembers “literally skipping in the garden,” a testament to how much the opportunity meant to her.

Toni’s childhood fascination with the innocence and cuteness of children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, laid the groundwork for her career. Her role at Smile Foundation

When runners take to the streets for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi, they will not just be pounding the pavement for personal achievement but also for a cause that touches the lives of countless children across South Africa. This year, the Challenge once again proudly supports the Smile Foundation, a charity dedicated to transforming the lives of children with facial abnormalities through surgical intervention and comprehensive care.

Toni Jabour

feels more like a calling than a job. Her dedication to the cause is palpable, driving her to elevate the brand despite financial constraints.

When Toni joined Smile Foundation, it was a relatively unknown entity. She faced the challenge head-on, leveraging her marketing expertise to forge strategic partnerships with media allies who shared her vision. This collaborative approach was instrumental in raising awareness and expanding the foundation’s reach.

Under Toni’s leadership, Smile Foundation’s brand underwent a significant transformation. The logo and corporate identity were revitalised, and the foundation’s presence on various media platforms grew exponentially. Today, Smile Foundation boasts a robust social media following and is recognised as one of South Africa’s top children’s charities.

Toni’s innovative marketing strategies and relentless advocacy have not only raised the foundation’s profile but also garnered widespread admiration for its work. Each time someone acknowledges the Smile Foundation brand, it reinforces Toni’s belief in the power of their mission and fuels her passion to do more.

This year’s theme for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi, #ChooseYou, is all about empowerment and self-care. It encourages participants to prioritise their wellbeing and personal growth. Running the Challenge is an act of choosing oneself, celebrating strength, resilience, and the journey towards a healthier, happier life.

By linking this theme to Smile Foundation, the Challenge underscores the idea that self-empowerment and community support go hand in hand. Choosing to participate in the Challenge means choosing to support a cause that helps children face their futures with confidence and joy.

The SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of community spirit and collective effort towards a common goal. By partnering with Smile Foundation, the Challenge highlights the importance of giving back and supporting causes that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Participants in the Challenge can

take pride in knowing that their efforts contribute to life-changing surgeries and comprehensive care for children in need. The funds raised through the Challenge will help Smile Foundation continue its vital work, ensuring that more children can face the world with confidence and joy.

The partnership between the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi and Smile Foundation exemplifies the power of community and the impact of dedicated individuals like Toni. Her journey with Smile Foundation is a testament to what can be achieved with passion, commitment, and strategic vision.

As runners cross the finish line, they will not only have achieved a personal milestone but also contributed to a brighter future for countless children. The support from the Challenge will help Smile Foundation continue its mission of transforming lives, one smile at a time. And for Toni, every recognition of the Smile Foundation brand is a reminder of why she continues to champion this cause with all her heart.

So, lace up your running shoes and join the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi. Run for fitness, run for joy, but most importantly, run for smiles. Choose you, and in doing so, choose to make a difference.

This year, the theme #ChooseYou celebrates the empowerment and support extended to these women through Reach for Recovery South Africa, one of the Challenge’s main charity beneficiaries.

A Legacy of Care and Compassion Reach for Recovery South Africa is part of the global Reach to Recovery network, which began in 1952 in the USA, founded by Therese Lasser. After undergoing a mastectomy herself, Lasser recognised the immense gap in support for women facing the psychological and physical aftermath of breast cancer surgery. She pioneered a programme that brought survivors together to offer peer support, which she introduced to South Africa in 1967. This voluntary and free service has since been a cornerstone for countless women navigating their journey through breast cancer.

The Essence of Peer Support

A breast cancer diagnosis can shatter a woman’s world, leaving her feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Reach for Recovery understands the critical need for empathy and support from those who truly understand this journey. The organisation’s peer-support volunteers are all breast cancer survivors, uniquely qualified to provide the emotional and psychological support new patients need. These volunteers undergo rigorous screening and continuous training to ensure they can offer the best support possible.

Choose A Beacon of

From hospital visits to answering pressing questions and offering nonmedical advice, these volunteers are there every step of the way. They provide comfort kits filled with helpful literature, a cushion for post-surgery comfort, a bag for the port-au-vac drain, and most significantly, a soft temporary prosthesis for those who have lost a breast and have not had immediate reconstructive surgery. This immediate provision helps women begin their recovery with dignity and hope.

Restoring Dignity through the DITTO Project

For many state patients, affording a silicone prosthesis is out of reach. Here, the DITTO Project steps in, offering subsidised silicone prostheses to restore self-image and confidence. This initiative underscores Reach for Recovery’s commitment to ensuring that every

woman, regardless of financial status, can reclaim her femininity and sense of self after the trauma of breast cancer.

Educating for Empowerment

“Knowledge is Power,” and Reach for Recovery harnesses this power by educating women about breast health. Volunteers conduct educational talks to highlight the importance of early detection and the services available. This outreach not only empowers women to take control of their health but also demystifies the journey through breast cancer, reducing fear and encouraging proactive health practices. Reach for Recovery supports over 5,000 breast cancer patients annually across 137 treatment centres in six provinces. The organisation’s efforts extend to men, who, though in smaller numbers, also face breast cancer and require surgery.

Stories of Resilience: Beulah Jankelowitz

Beulah Jankelowitz’s story is one of many that highlights the critical role of Reach for Recovery. Diagnosed with breast cancer on 28 August 1987, her world was turned upside down. Despite living a healthy lifestyle, she faced the terrifying prospect of losing not just her health but also a significant part of her identity. With a supportive husband by her side, she navigated the psychological and physical challenges, but many women are not as fortunate. In some cultures, a mastectomy can lead to rejection and further trauma.

Reach for Recovery provides these women with the support they need to regain their confidence and rebuild their lives. The joy on the faces of women receiving their silicone prostheses is a testament to the organisation’s impact, helping them walk tall and reclaim their dignity.

Gratitude and Forward Momentum

As a key beneficiary of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi, Reach for Recovery is deeply grateful for the support. The funds raised will provide silicone prostheses and well-fitting bras to indigent women, transforming their

lives. The joy and relief these women experience, no longer needing to fill their bras with cotton wool or socks, is immeasurable.

This year’s theme, #ChooseYou, resonates deeply with the mission of Reach for Recovery. It emphasises the importance of self-care, empowerment, and community support in the journey of recovery. By participating in the SPAR Women’s Challenge, each runner contributes to a cause that brings smiles and hope to countless women.

For more information on Reach for Recovery and to see how you can

help, visit www.reach4recovery.org.za. Together, we can continue to provide the support and resources necessary for women to face breast cancer with courage and dignity, and to choose themselves every step of the way.

Mimi Mahlasela

What #ChooseYou means to me is prioritising my mental health by doing things I love and that make me happy. Ultimately, it means putting myself and my happiness first.

In my daily life, I choose myself by going for walks to clear my head and manage my stress, ensuring it doesn’t affect my mental state.

Being uniquely me means understanding that there is no one else like me, and I matter.

René Kalmer

What #ChooseYou means to me, is investing in myself and embracing the beauty of self-care and self-love!

By choosing to lace up my running shoes every morning, I’m not only investing in my own health and happiness but also enhancing my ability to show up fully as a mom, wife, and teacher. Running fills my cup, allowing me to pour my energy and love into all the aspects of my life!

Elana AfrikaBredenkamp

I embrace every decision made for me from Above. I support everyone striving for positive change.

I choose You & Me, Our, Us –Together, we can achieve so much more. I choose you in meaningful conversations. I choose a life worth living every day.

I stand with those dedicated to helping South Africa and transforming the world for good.

Today, I chose to support a friend in need, turning their burden into a blessing.

I choose God and the truth. I choose you in prayer. I choose you, no matter who you are.

“You” comes with change, respect, growth, doubt, and victory. I #ChooseYou without delay.

The theme is about inspiring others to be their best. For me, choosing myself means doing what I love and using that to motivate and inspire others.

Claus Kempen

#ChooseYou means realising that by investing in others, I invest in myself. Being good to my wife and children makes me a better father and husband, which is choosing myself.

My friendship with Louzanne has taught me that choosing her and doing something nice ultimately benefits me. It’s like the cliché of outreach work—you set out to change others’ lives but find you’ve been changed instead.

At this stage, choosing myself means doing things for those in my inner circle without expecting anything in return.

Long-term, choosing myself means choosing others.

Marlee van der Merwe

#ChooseYou means taking care of myself so I can better care for others. In “The Artist’s Way,” it suggests nurturing your inner child to fuel creativity and make a difference. I believe in this approach. My “me time” includes biking, painting, or listening to music, which helps me be a better mother, colleague, friend, wife, daughter, and sister. Rest isn’t just about relaxing; it’s about recharging my creative spirit.

Kesa Molotsane

#ChooseYou means putting myself first, prioritising my mental and physical wellbeing, and seeking overall happiness. This involves exercise, healthy eating, and engaging in activities that bring joy. I also prioritise spending time with loved ones.

I understand there’s only one me, so I strive to be the best version of myself. My unique talents, skills, and capabilities define me, and I embrace them fully. I cherish every moment and wake up ready to offer the world the authentic Kesa.

Lungelo Madondo

#ChooseYou means prioritising yourself, which isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. Making yourself a priority is key to happiness. #ChooseYou always.

I support myself daily by believing in my abilities before seeking validation from others. This builds confidence and equips me to tackle challenges head-on. Being unique means embracing my individuality without fear.

Yolanda Bukani

Choosing myself means setting and maintaining healthy boundaries.

I’ve always struggled with saying no and tend to be a people pleaser, even when I lack the capacity. While I love helping others, it often leaves me exhausted and anxious. Recently, I’ve learned to say no and prioritise my peace, joy, and mental health. I choose me because I deserve it and I’m worth it.

For me #ChooseYou means choosing to do things that make me happy. It means putting my needs first and doing what fulfils me and leaves me looking forward to conquering my day.

I choose myself by first taking care of my body. I choose myself by reading my favourite books, getting my training and work done. I believe that one cannot pour from an empty cup. I choose to fulfil myself so I am able to fulfil others – my family, my community, my work.

Charné Labuschagne

Everyone plays roles like wife, mother, grandmother, or friend. However, we must prioritise ourselves first. By loving and motivating ourselves, we can better support others.

Choosing ourselves daily helps us grow and sets an example for others. For me, this means doing what I love, like taking 30 minutes each morning to enjoy a coffee and the sunrise. In these moments, I focus on myself and feel blessed for my life and roles.

After an intense competition at the SPAR South Rand DC, Charné Labuschagne was crowned as the SPAR South Rand Ambassador for this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi! She is tasked with rallying the SPAR South Rand employees to join in on Challenge Day and take to the road for a good cause. She embraces #ChooseYou by asking every SPAR employee to embrace their uniqueness with enthusiasm and joy.

From Setbacks to

The past few years have not been easy for René. She faced a series of injuries that significantly hindered her running progress. The primary culprit, she believes, was sleep deprivation—a common struggle for mothers with young children. “It’s hard to stick to a training regime if you have to get up four times a night,” René shared. Quality sleep is essential for recovery, and without it, injuries tend to linger and worsen. This period was marked by frustration and tears as René grappled with the dual demands of motherhood and her athletic aspirations.

Taking a sabbatical from competitive running in the previous year was a necessary step. Running with constant pain, especially in her Achilles tendon, drained the joy out of her passion. Yet, even during this break, she didn’t completely abandon the sport. Instead, she explored recreational running and even tried trail running, which she found beneficial for her Achilles. The Otter Trail Run, sponsored by EasyEquities, was a memorable experience that strengthened her resolve and provided a

René Kalmer, a name synonymous with resilience and determination, has faced numerous challenges in her running career. As an ambassador for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi and a seasoned marathon runner, René’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, especially in the face of injuries and the demands of motherhood.

welcome distraction from her injuries. One of the highlights of 2023 was participating in her 11th Two Oceans half-marathon alongside fellow SPAR ambassador Louzanne Coetzee and her guide, Claus Kempen. Louzanne, who is visually impaired, inspired René with her tenacity and humour during the race. This experience underscored the importance of camaraderie and shared goals, even leading to a humorous tumble that, thankfully, only bruised their egos.

The year 2024 brought new challenges and opportunities. René started a new job as a primary school teacher at Laerskool Fairland, including coaching an under-12 netball team to victory in their league. Balancing teaching and training for her Comrades debut required meticulous time management. Training from 4:30 AM to 6:00 AM was necessary to accommodate her new responsibilities. “I needed a new goal this year that both scared and excited me,” she said, embracing the journey with vigour and determination.

Representing South Africa at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics remains a highlight of René’s career. However, her experiences with the SPAR 10km Challenges hold a special place in her heart. Winning 28 SPAR races and clinching three SPAR Grand Prix Series titles were significant achievements that shaped her journey. These events provided a platform for fierce competition and cherished reunions with running friends.

To all the women participating in the SPAR Women’s Challenge, René’s message is clear: “Embrace every stride, savour every moment, and cherish the empowering camaraderie. Let’s make this event a celebration of strength, unity, and determination. See you at the start line!”

René Kalmer’s journey from injury to triumph is an inspiration. Her story exemplifies resilience, the importance of a supportive community, and the joy of pursuing one’s passion, no matter the obstacles.

01 Training Tips for Recovery

René emphasises that fitness is for everyone, regardless of their current level. Incorporating bodyweight exercises, Pilates, and yoga can improve strength, stability, and flexibility without requiring extensive equipment or time. Exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, planks, and bridges target major muscle groups and can be easily modified to suit individual fitness levels.

René’s experience with injuries has equipped her with invaluable insights into recovery and training:

Listen to Your Body

It’s crucial to heed your body’s signals. Pain should not be ignored, as it often indicates the need for rest. The RICE principle (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) is a simple yet effective method for managing injuries.

Preparing for Challenge Day

The Importance of Nutrition 01

For events like the SPAR Women’s Challenge, both physical and mental preparation are key. René advises following a structured training plan that includes a mix of running, cross-training, and rest days. Nutrition, hydration, and consistent training play pivotal roles in readiness. Mentally, visualising success, setting realistic goals, and practicing positive self-talk can enhance confidence and performance on Challenge Day.

CrossTraining

Diversifying your workouts can prevent further injury while maintaining fitness. René recommends activities like cycling, swimming, Pilates, and yoga, which offer cardiovascular benefits without stressing the injured area.

Focus on Rehabilitation

Engaging with professionals like physiotherapists can aid in targeted recovery exercises. Building strength and flexibility is essential to avoid future injuries.

Nutrition has been a cornerstone in René’s recovery and training. A balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables fuels her body and aids in recovery. Hydration is equally important, especially during long runs and intense training sessions.

Maintaining a positive mindset is critical. Focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t, and avoid comparing yourself to others or your past self.

Gradually reintroduce intensity to your workouts. Avoid doing too much too soon to prevent setbacks.

Self-Discovery

Mimi Mahlasela, the vibrant and inspiring ambassador for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi, is the cover star of this year’s Challenge magazine. Her journey toward self-love, empowerment, and advocacy for women’s wellbeing is a story that resonates deeply.

Mimi is a beacon of authenticity and self-acceptance. She celebrates her uniqueness by prioritising self-care, which she believes is fundamental to becoming the best version of oneself. “I simply celebrate and embrace my uniqueness by taking care of my body and mind so I can be the best version of myself,” she explains. This holistic approach ensures that she remains grounded and true to herself amidst the demands of her busy life.

In today’s fast-paced world, Mimi has adopted the mantra of #ChooseYou. For her, choosing herself involves taking time for mental clarity. “I #ChooseYou in my daily life by going for a walk so I can clear my head of anything I may be stressing about so it doesn’t affect my mental state,” she shares. This simple yet effective practice helps her maintain balance and mental health, emphasising the importance of regular self-reflection and physical activity.

Mimi is passionate about the vital importance of self-care for women, especially given the multifaceted roles they play in society. “It is crucial that women prioritise self-care because we live in times that require us to be so much more than just being at home and taking care of things there,” she states. As career women, wives, mothers, and friends, women often juggle numerous responsibilities. Mimi believes that pouring into oneself is essential to effectively pour into others. By prioritising self-care, women can recharge and offer their best selves to those around them.

A significant part of Mimi’s journey toward self-love is embracing her imperfections. She candidly shares that she has learned to accept that she is

not perfect, and no one is. “Every day is a learning journey to embrace that sometimes I will fail, but it does not mean I am wrong, it is just a curveball moment to learn something,” she reflects. This mindset allows her to grow continuously and approach life with a learning attitude, fostering resilience and self-compassion.

Mimi’s career as an actress provides her with a unique avenue for selfexpression and self-care. “In my line of work, I get to step into a role to portray a character by telling a story relatable to viewers,” she explains. Through acting, Mimi finds a creative outlet that not only allows her to express herself but also connect with others on a profound level. This form of art becomes a therapeutic process, helping her navigate her personal journey of self-discovery and self-love.

After a busy day, Mimi finds solace in simple pleasures. Dining out and spending time with her loved ones are her favourite ways to unwind and take care of herself. These moments of relaxation and connection with her close circle offer her the emotional support and joy necessary to recharge and face new challenges.

Mimi firmly believes that embracing her uniqueness contributes significantly to her overall wellbeing and happiness. “It uplifts my mood and energy thus ensuring that I continue contributing positively towards anything I am involved in,” she asserts. By staying true to herself, Mimi not only enhances her own life but also positively impacts the lives of those she interacts with.

Her advice to women struggling to embrace their unique qualities and talents is straightforward yet

powerful: “Believe in yourselves and always put what makes you happy first.” This encouragement to prioritise personal happiness and self-belief is a cornerstone of her message, urging women to recognise and celebrate their worth.

A specific piece of art that has profoundly influenced Mimi’s journey is her acting career itself. “For me, acting is an art form that continues to help me in my journey of self-discovery and self-love,” she shares. Each role and character she portrays adds a new layer to her understanding of herself and the world, making her journey both enriching and enlightening.

Looking to the future, Mimi’s goals are clear: “My goal is to continue on the road I am on of healing and doing the best I can to be a healed and better version of who I am today, to share my story in hopes to inspire the women around me.” Her dedication to personal growth and her commitment to inspiring others reflect her deep-seated belief in the power of shared experiences and mutual support.

Mimi Mahlasela’s journey is a testament to the strength and beauty found in embracing one’s uniqueness. As an ambassador for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi and the cover girl of this year’s Challenge magazine, she stands as a shining example of selflove, resilience, and the transformative power of self-care. Through her story, Mimi continues to inspire women to prioritise their wellbeing, embrace their imperfections, and celebrate their unique selves.

Together

Louzanne, a visually impaired athlete, first met Claus in 2014. However, it wasn’t until 2016 that their running partnership truly began. Claus was initially asked by Louzanne’s coach to step in for a training session. Despite the uncertainty of the new pairing, it quickly became evident that their synergy was something special. Claus recalls, “It worked well from the start. It wasn’t difficult at all; it was just about communicating and adapting to each other’s needs.”

Their journey together kicked off with a challenging hill session, a test that would set the tone for their future runs. By 2017, they had conquered their first marathon together, the Soweto Marathon, marking the beginning of a deep and supportive friendship built on mutual choice and respect.

One of the critical elements of their partnership is their ability to communicate effectively. During races, Claus provides verbal cues to guide Louzanne, ensuring they stay synchronised. “We talk a lot during races,” Louzanne explains. “He describes where we are running to prevent any missteps.” This level of communication is crucial, especially considering the different terrains and paces they encounter. Claus emphasises that Louzanne’s adaptability makes his role easier. “She’s very adaptable. If I need to explain things in detail, she’s always ready to listen and adjust accordingly.” This mutual understanding and adaptability are the bedrock of their successful collaboration, a conscious choice to understand and support each other.

Their training regimen is as intense as it is unique. Louzanne trains six days a week, often with two sessions

In the eclectic world of athletics, the unique story of Louzanne Coetzee and Claus Kempen stands out as a testament to the power of choice, teamwork, and mutual respect. Their partnership, which began somewhat serendipitously, has blossomed into a remarkable example of how two individuals can choose each other and themselves to achieve extraordinary things.

a day, focusing on the 1,500 metres on the track and the marathon on the road. Claus joins her for most of these sessions, splitting duties with Louzanne’s other guide, Estean Badenhorst. This rigorous schedule demands a high level of commitment and discipline from both athletes, and Claus admires Louzanne’s dedication. “She’s there for all 12 sessions or more each week. It’s incredible to see her push through and stay committed to her goals.” Their joint training not only prepares them for competitions but also strengthens their bond, allowing them to understand each other’s limits and strengths better.

Like any partnership, theirs has faced challenges. One notable moment was during the Tokyo Marathon, where Claus suffered cramps towards the end of the race. Despite the setback, Louzanne remained supportive, prioritising his health over the race performance. “It was never an issue for me,” she recalls. “His health came first, and we dealt with it together.” Another memorable experience was their first marathon together in Soweto. Louzanne struggled from the 18-kilometre mark, but Claus was there every step of the way, encouraging her to keep going. “He was very patient, making me run a lamppost, walk a lamppost,” she says. These experiences highlight their resilience and the unwavering support they provide each other, constantly choosing to prioritise each other’s wellbeing.

Beyond their personal achievements, Louzanne and Claus use their partnership to inspire others. As ambassadors for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi, they strive to motivate women to pursue their unique passions fearlessly. Louzanne believes in the power of setting an

example. “There’s nothing women can’t do if they set their minds to it. Our partnership helps convey that message.” Their dynamic also challenges traditional gender roles in sports. Louzanne appreciates Claus’s willingness to step out of his comfort zone to support her goals. “There’s nothing wrong with a man helping a woman achieve her goals,” she asserts. Their story encourages both men and women to choose collaboration and support in their pursuits.

What truly sets Louzanne and Claus apart is the genuine friendship they share. They are more than just running partners; they are family. Claus likens Louzanne to a younger sister, and their bond extends beyond running. They share jokes, celebrate successes, and support each other through life’s ups and downs. “We have a lot of fun together,” Louzanne says. “Running is not just about performance; it’s about the enjoyment and the lifestyle that comes with it.”

Their camaraderie is evident in the way they talk about each other. Claus mentions the laughter they share during interviews, often finding humour in their shared experiences. These moments of levity strengthen their relationship, making their partnership not just effective but also enjoyable.

The story of Louzanne and Claus is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through trust, communication, and mutual respect. Their unique partnership, marked by dedication and genuine friendship, serves as an inspiration to many. As they continue to run together, they not only break records but also barriers, proving that with the right support and the conscious choice to lift each other up, anything is possible.

In a society where self-expression often battles against conformity, Zinhle Sithebe, also known as Zee Feels, stands as a shining light of authenticity and creativity. This talented Illustrator and pattern designer celebrated for her vibrant artwork, graces the cover of this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi magazine with her unique flair. Her journey, filled with self-discovery and empowerment, offers a glimpse into how art can be a powerful medium for selfexpression and self-love.

Zinhle’s path to embracing her uniqueness has been a journey of perseverance and self-acceptance.

“By doing the things I love and keeping the passion alive, I have to be myself,” she shares. It’s a philosophy that has seen her through times of doubt and uncertainty. “It’s hard at times to be positive and celebrate every part of yourself, but I think it’s okay to take it day-by-day and not be too harsh on the expectations you may put on yourself.” This gentle approach allows her to stay true to herself and her art, ensuring that each piece she creates is a genuine reflection of her inner world.

For Zinhle, art is not just a profession; it’s a way of life. Her creativity extends beyond the canvas to her fashion and hair choices, which she uses as additional outlets for selfexpression. “I like to experiment with clothing and my hair,” she says. Her beautiful locks, styled in various creative ways, symbolise her adventurous spirit and the versatility of Black hair. This daily practice of creativity helps Zinhle stay connected to her identity and nurtures her wellbeing.

Zinhle’s art is a celebration of women and their unique qualities. She draws inspiration from the strong women in her life, such as her mother and grandmother, who embraced their womanhood with pride. “I love to affirm the women around me and remind them of their light,” she explains. Her work features characters who are comfortable with themselves, imperfections and all, shining brightly because their flaws are embraced as strengths. Through

her art, Zinhle encourages women to see their uniqueness as a source of power and beauty.

One of the most profound lessons Zinhle has learned on her artistic journey is the importance of embracing failure. As a self-professed perfectionist, this has been a challenging but rewarding process. “Learning how to be kinder to my body and mind helps me authentically translate that through my work,” she notes. By accepting her imperfections, Zinhle has found a way to infuse her art with authenticity and vulnerability, making it all the more resonant.

Zinhle’s art is deeply rooted in her cultural heritage and personal experiences. Growing up in a predominantly maternal household, she

was surrounded by women who took pride in their appearance and expression through fashion. This upbringing instilled in her a love for fashion and a desire to explore cultural themes in her work. “My talents are a gift from God, but I also like to believe I am a product of my ancestors,” she reflects. Through her art, she honours the generations of women who paved the way for her, creating a bridge between past and present.

Embracing her uniqueness has brought Zinhle a sense of peace and happiness. “The moment you are not doing things for external glorification and just being yourself, you’ll feel much better,” she asserts. This focus on authenticity not only enhances her wellbeing but also allows her to create art that is true to her vision. By staying true to herself, Zinhle finds joy in the creative

process and inspires others to do the same.

Zinhle’s advice to women struggling to embrace their unique qualities is simple yet profound: “Everything that comes from you is unique to you. It can never be replicated.” She emphasises the importance of courage and passion in embracing one’s individuality. “You owe it to yourself to show up for yourself,” she says, urging women to recognise the power they hold in their uniqueness.

One of the pivotal moments in Zinhle’s journey was her participation in the Women’s Month Group exhibition, in collaboration with Usurpa Africa and After Paradise. The theme, ‘Down to Earth,’ pushed her to confront her anxieties and embrace her imperfections. “I had to allow myself to witness what comes even when things are uncomfortable,” she recalls. This experience helped her release fears and insecurities, allowing her to shine from a place of love and generosity. The artwork she created for this exhibition is a testament to her journey of self-discovery and self-love.

As Zinhle continues to explore themes of self-love and empowerment in her art, she is committed to growth and experimentation. “It’s important for me to explore new ways of communicating selflove and empowerment,” she says. She is eager to work with different mediums and scales, constantly seeking fresh perspectives to keep her work authentic and impactful.

Zinhle Sithebe’s art is more than just a visual treat; it’s a celebration of individuality, culture, and the empowering journey of self-love. Through her work, she continues to inspire and uplift, reminding us all of the beauty in embracing our unique selves.

Inspiration in Action

Marlee van der Merwe’s name resonates with passion, creativity, and resilience. As a SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi ambassador and a multitalented actress, Marlee has carved out a unique space for herself in the arts and beyond. Her journey is a testament to the power of embracing one’s uniqueness and using it as a source of strength and inspiration.

Marlee’s life philosophy revolves around self-acceptance and relentless effort. “I always try to accept what I can’t change about myself, not take myself too seriously, and laugh about my quirks,” she says. This attitude of self-acceptance, coupled with a drive for excellence, defines her approach to life and work. She maximises her efforts in all her endeavours, never settling for half measures.

The theme of this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge, #ChooseYou, holds special significance for Marlee. As a mother, professional, and artist, her life is filled with distractions. However, she understands the crucial role of self-care in maintaining her effectiveness in all her roles. “I believe I can’t be good at my job or a good mom if I don’t take care of my body physically or mentally,” she shares. Choosing herself, she finds, enables her to give more to her family and artistic passions.

In her busy life, choosing herself sometimes means an early morning bike ride, while other times it’s about sleeping in and cuddling with her boys. Marlee listens to her body and makes choices that feel right for her each day. This balance, she believes, is key to maintaining her overall wellbeing and happiness.

Marlee emphasises the importance of living in the moment and taking care of oneself. “If I live in the moment, taking care of myself, being in the moment while taking care of others is easier,” she notes. This mindset enhances her own life and inspires those around her to create similar spaces in their lives. By setting an example of self-care and balance, Marlee encourages other women to prioritise their wellbeing.

Her journey as an artist has involved embracing parts of herself that she once found challenging. She mentions her nervous laugh and occasional clumsiness, traits that differ from the polished characters she often portrays. “I am actually quite clumsy,” she admits, adding that a lot of preparation goes into not coming across that way on stage or screen.

For Marlee, art is not just a profession but a form of self-care. Engaging in art for the sheer love of it, rather than always striving for perfection, allows her to express her inner child and heals

her. “Doing art for the love of it and not ALWAYS for the purpose of perfecting my skills nurtures my inner child,” she says. This approach allows her to remain content and reminds her of the reasons she chose this career in the first place.

Every artist has a unique gift, and Marlee has learned that embracing her uniqueness contributes significantly to her wellbeing and happiness. Knowing and embracing her essence takes away much of the self-doubt and self-loathing that can plague artists. “If you embrace who you are, you become a beacon, a light to others,” she explains. Confidence in one’s uniqueness is one of the most attractive qualities a person can possess.

Marlee is open about her perceived flaws, believing that discussing them can start meaningful conversations. “Opening conversations on this topic can be so uplifting,” she says. By sharing her own struggles, she finds common ground with others and helps them realise that everyone has a place in the world’s beautiful tapestry.

A pivotal moment in Marlee’s journey of self-discovery and self-love came during her participation in the Sani2C race. Despite her apprehensions about the technical aspects of mountain biking, she teamed up with her fearless sister-in-law. “Somehow the two of us just worked so well together and even bettered the times I set with my husband as my partner last year,” she recalls. This experience taught her to appreciate her own strengths and the value she brings to any team.

Looking ahead, Marlee aims to inspire women to embrace their uniqueness and take on challenges that scare them. She hopes to show that it’s worth the time and energy to live a fuller, more exciting life. “If I can inspire one woman like me to see that she is worth the time and energy to live a fuller, more exciting life, then I have done what my heart desires,” she says. Through her artistry and platform, Marlee encourages others to write their own stories and discover their unique strengths.

Marlee’s story is one of embracing quirks, striving for excellence, and inspiring others. She embodies the spirit of the SPAR Women’s Challenge theme, #ChooseYou, reminding us all of the importance of self-care and the power of embracing our unique selves.

Celebrating

Beauty

Tintfo Le Tinhle, translating to “beautiful things” in Siswati, was born from Vuyo Mnyengeza’s passion for celebrating the unique beauty and stories of women. She founded the brand in 2018, launching a physical store on Jan Smuts Avenue in Craighall Park. The store quickly became known for its eclectic and vibrant mix of ethically sourced items from around the globe, including Africa and local treasures.

Vuyo’s journey with Tintfo Le Tinhle has always been about more than just fashion. It’s about empowering South African women to see themselves as one of the beautiful things in the world. Her approach to fashion is deeply personal and hands-on, focusing on real women with real bodies and real lives, creating wardrobes that support their multifaceted roles—whether they are mothers, professionals, or anything in between.

The clothing at Tintfo Le Tinhle is Afrocentric, modest, and maximalist, rich with colors, patterns, and details. It’s designed for women who are fluent in style and want to express

their unique identities. Vuyo’s goal is to help each woman showcase her best features and feel confident and beautiful in her own skin.

Being part of the SPAR Women’s Challenge is an incredible experience. The positive energy, support, and camaraderie among the women, from staff to athletes, is truly inspiring. It brings back fond memories of Vuyo’s time in the magazine industry, where women took centre stage in all their glamour and strength.

Tintfo Le Tinhle is about celebrating every woman’s journey and empowering her to shine in all her roles with grace, joy, and authenticity.

Embracing Uniqueness

Gerda van Schalkwyk, a fashionista extraordinaire, shares her insights on how to highlight your unique style and make every outfit truly your own.

1. Play to Your Personality

Your style should reflect who you are. It’s important to be aware of trends, but ultimately, your personality should shine through. As Coco Chanel famously said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” Gerda, however, suggests the opposite: “What can you add?” It’s about finding that perfect balance and making a statement with your look.

2. Add a Personal Touch

Don’t be afraid to incorporate something that feels uniquely you. Whether it’s a piece of jewelry or an accessory, adding a personal touch can elevate your outfit and set you apart.

3. Endorphin Dressing

A newer concept, endorphin dressing, is all about wearing clothes that make you feel good. The better you feel in your outfit, the more confident you will be. This could be anything from a party dress to a comfortable pair of jeans— whatever brings you joy.

4. Mix and Match

Combine the good with the bad, the old with the new. Vintage pieces can add a unique twist to modern outfits, and vice versa. Don’t be afraid to mix styles and eras to create a look that’s all your own.

5. Classics with a Twist

Classic pieces like a good pair of jeans or a little black dress are timeless, but don’t be afraid to give them a twist. Experiment with how you wear these staples. For example, instead of wearing a scarf around your neck, try it as a headband or even a bracelet.

6. Comfort is Key

No matter how stylish an outfit is, if it’s not comfortable, it won’t look good. Make sure your clothes fit well and you feel comfortable in them. Comfort translates to confidence, which is the best accessory you can wear.

7. Eclectic and Personal

Gerda encourages a touch of eclecticism. Whether it’s layering jewelry or mixing patterns, the goal is to create a look that feels uniquely yours. It’s about finding the right balance between the classic and the eclectic to create something truly special.

Remember, fashion is about expressing yourself and feeling good in what you wear. Take these tips from Gerda van Schalkwyk to highlight your unique style and make every outfit a true reflection of who you are.

Madeleen Curnick is the creative force behind the brand Hashtag Iwant. Self-Care Creative

In our fast-paced world, selfcare has become more than a buzzword; it’s a necessity for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. But self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and meditation—though those can be lovely. It’s also about embracing and expressing all the unique pieces of yourself through creative outlets. Art and creativity not only offer a respite from daily stress but also provide powerful ways to explore, accept, and celebrate who you are. Here’s how various forms of creativity can help you on this journey.

Draw & Dazzle

The simplicity of drawing, doodling, and colouring can be profoundly therapeutic. These activities don’t require professional skills or elaborate materials, making them accessible to anyone. When you draw or doodle, you enter a state of flow, where time seems to vanish, and your mind can rest from the constant chatter of daily life. Colouring books, especially those designed for adults, can help reduce anxiety and foster mindfulness. As you fill in intricate patterns with vibrant hues, you allow yourself to focus on the moment, let go of stress, and tap into a childlike sense of wonder.

From Mud to Masterpiece

Pottery is a tactile and immersive form of art that connects you with the earth and your own creativity. The process of shaping clay into functional or decorative pieces can be grounding and soothing. Pottery requires patience and presence, as each step—from wedging the clay to throwing it on the wheel—demands focus and care. The transformation of a lump of clay into a beautiful, unique object can be a metaphor for personal growth and self-acceptance. Each imperfection in the final piece is a reminder that beauty often lies in uniqueness and flaws.

Ink Symphony

Calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing, is a fantastic way to practice self-care and express individuality. The slow, deliberate movements required in calligraphy can be meditative, helping to calm the mind and centre your thoughts. The creative aspect of designing letters and words can also help you express emotions and ideas in a visually appealing manner. Moreover, as you improve your calligraphy skills, you may find a new sense of accomplishment and confidence in your creative abilities, reinforcing a positive self-image.

Stitching Serenity

Needlework, crocheting, knitting, and quilting are timeless crafts that combine creativity with mindfulness. These activities involve repetitive, rhythmic motions that can be calming and meditative. Creating something with your hands, whether it’s a cozy scarf, a delicate doily, or a colourful quilt, brings a sense of accomplishment and pride. These crafts also teach patience and precision, reinforcing the value of taking things one step at a time. As you create unique pieces, you celebrate your individuality and the rich tradition of handmade artistry.

Vocal and Gastronomical Rhythms

Engaging in singing, dance, or cooking classes can be incredibly liberating and joyful. Singing allows you to express emotions and stories through music, while dance connects you with your body and emotions through movement. Both activities can boost your mood, reduce stress, and foster a sense of community when done in groups. Cooking classes, on the other hand, offer a creative and sensory experience. Experimenting with ingredients and techniques can be a delightful way to nurture yourself and others. These activities remind you that creativity can be a shared experience, enhancing your connection with yourself and those around you.

Brushstrokes and Daydreams

Painting is perhaps one of the most versatile and expressive forms of art. Whether you prefer watercolours, oils, or acrylics, painting allows you to play with colours, shapes, and textures. The act of putting brush to canvas can be both exhilarating and soothing. Painting encourages you to experiment and take risks, which can translate to greater confidence in other areas of life. Moreover, creating visual art can help you process and express complex emotions, leading to greater self-understanding and acceptance. Each stroke and colour choice becomes a reflection of your unique self, capturing your personal vision and feelings.

The Power of Creativity in Self-Care

Engaging in creative activities is a powerful form of self-care for several reasons. First, it provides a break from the routine and pressures of everyday life, allowing you to enter a space where you can simply be yourself. Creativity

encourages you to explore and express your inner world, offering a healthy outlet for emotions and thoughts that might otherwise remain bottled up. Additionally, the process of creating something— whether it’s a piece of art, a song, or a hand-knitted scarf—can boost your selfesteem and sense of accomplishment. Creative activities also offer opportunities for mindfulness, which is the practice of being present and fully engaged in the moment. Whether you are focused on the intricate details of a doodle, the flow of a dance, or the texture of clay, you are practicing mindfulness. This presence can reduce stress, anxiety, and negative thinking patterns, promoting overall mental wellbeing.

Furthermore, creativity connects you with others. Whether you join a pottery class, participate in a cooking class, or share your knitting projects online, these activities can foster a sense of community and belonging. Sharing your creative work with others can also reinforce a positive self-image, as you receive feedback and recognition for your unique contributions.

Embracing Your Unique Pieces

Accepting and loving yourself means embracing all the unique pieces that make up who you are. Creativity helps you uncover and celebrate these pieces, whether they are quirky, serious, whimsical, or profound. Each creative endeavour is an opportunity to express a different aspect of your personality and to see yourself in a new light.

In a world that often values conformity, creativity reminds you that your individuality is your greatest asset. By engaging in creative activities, you can cultivate a deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself. You learn to appreciate your unique perspective and talents, and you recognise that your imperfections and idiosyncrasies are what make you truly special.

Art and creativity are powerful tools for self-care and selfacceptance. Whether you are drawing, writing, dancing, or engaging in any other form of creative expression, you are nurturing your soul and celebrating your unique self. These activities offer a refuge from the demands of everyday life, a means to explore and express your inner world, and a way to connect with others.

Baked Potato Cups

SERVES 3-6

Ingredients

• 6 medium SPAR Freshline potatoes

• 3 Tbsp SPAR extra virgin olive oil

FOR THE TUNA FILLING

• 1 can SPAR light meat shredded tuna

• 2 Tbsp SPAR Freshline spring onion, chopped

• ½ disc SPAR feta cheese, crumbled

• 2 Tbsp SPAR mayonnaise

• ¼ cup SPAR cream style sweetcorn

• Salt and pepper

FOR THE BACON AND CHEESE FILLING:

• 100g SPAR streaky bacon, diced and fried until crispy

• ½ cup SPAR sour cream or SPAR double cream plain yoghurt or fresh cream

• 1 SPAR large egg

• Salt and pepper

• 3 SPAR Freshline cherry tomatoes, halved

• 6 slices SPAR white cheddar

Method

1. Cook the potatoes by either simmering them until tender or microwaving them until tender (to microwave the potatoes, pierce with a fork and cook for 10-14 minutes or until tender).

2. To make the tuna filling mix all the ingredients and season to taste.

3. To make the bacon filling, mix all the ingredients except the tomatoes and season to taste.

4. When the potatoes are tender and cool enough to handle, squash each potato by simply pressing down on

them until they are about 1-cm thick. Start preheating the oven to 200ºC.

5. Prepare a large six-hole muffin tin by adding oil to each hole. Now carefully line each hole with a squashed potato and make an indent in the middle. Season with salt and pepper and add another drizzle of oil.

6. Bake the potato cups for about 20 minutes or until they are golden and crisp.

7. Fill each potato cup generously with either the tuna filling or the bacon filling – this recipe makes enough

filling for 3 cups of each.

8. Now for the bacon filling, add two halves of the cherry tomatoes to each potato and top with cheese. For the tuna filling simply fill generously and then top with cheese.

9. Bake the potato cups for about 20 minutes or until golden.

Curried Mayo, Chicken & Rice Bowl

SERVES 2

Ingredients

FOR THE CHICKEN

• 2 SPAR Select chicken breast fillets

• 2 Tbsp SPAR extra virgin olive oil

• 1 Tbsp cajun or BBQ spice

FOR THE CUCUMBER SALSA

• ½ cup finely chopped SPAR Freshline cucumber

• A handful chopped SPAR Freshline mint

• 2 Tbsp SPAR white wine vinegar

• 2 Tbsp SPAR extra virgin olive oil

• Salt and pepper

FOR THE CURRY MAYONNAISE SAUCE

• ¼ cup SPAR original mayonnaise

• ¼ cup SPAR double cream yoghurt

• 1 Tbsp curry powder

• 1 tsp SPAR apricot jam

• 1 Tbsp SPAR lemon juice (optional)

• Salt and pepper

TO ASSEMBLE

FOR THE CURRY MAYONNAISE SAUCE

• 2 cups SPAR brown basmati rice, cooked

• ¼ cup pickled red onion

• 6 SPAR Freshline mini cucumbers, halved

• A handful SPAR Freshline rocket

• 1 packet (230g) SPAR Freshline long stem broccoli

• 1 Tbsp SPAR extra virgin olive oil

• Salt

Method

1. Blanch the broccoli in a saucepan filled with simmering, salted water for 5 minutes.

2. Drain and rinse under cold water.

3. Toss with oil and salt.

4. Heat a griddle pan until very hot.

5. Add the broccoli in a single layer and let it smoke and char for about 3 minutes on each side (or until you have a visible char).

6. To make the chicken, coat in oil and spices and then you can cook it on the same griddle pan. Just turn the heat down to medium heat and cook the chicken for about 6 minutes on a side or until cooked through.

7. Mix all the salsa ingredients. Mix the curry mayo ingredients and season well.

8. To assemble the bowls, divide all the elements between two plates or bowls and serve.
