New in Teacher Resources

Create an Emotion-Rich Classroom Helping Young Children Build Their Social Emotional Skills by Lindsay N. Giroux, M.Ed., with foreword by Mary Louise Hemmeter, Ph.D.

An emotion-rich classroom intentionally surrounds children with social emotional learning experiences and supportive interactions. It’s about teaching emotional literacy and vocabulary with explicit lessons, but it’s also about responding when a child is upset, modeling how to cope with frustration, discussing emotions in storybooks, and asking children to share examples of emotions from their own lives. This book provides frameworks for planning and implementing strategies to support emotional development in children.

Teach consent in a child-friendly and developmentally appropriate way

Centered on a class of preschoolers, this series helps teach young children the social and emotional skills they need to understand the complexities of consent. Each book covers a consent theme, such as how to recognize the physical sensations that emotions create, look for body language cues, ask for and listen to choices, and know that our bodies have value. With believable, everyday situations and diverse characters, children can see themselves and others reflected in each story—and develop a vocabulary to communicate consent and feelings. Every book in the series is accompanied by a song from Peaceful Schools with downloadable audio files and sheet music.

Say Cheese—Uh, Make That PLEASE There are a few good ways to make sure you don’t cross a line when taking and posting photos. They all involve asking questions. Ask the person in the photo if it’s okay. Actually, ask them before they are in the photo—ask them if it’s okay to take a picture of them. After you take it, maybe you want to post it. Maybe you got a terrific shot of your buddy doing a cannonball at the pool. But even if it’s a terrific shot, it’s possible your friend does not want that picture out in the world. Make sure you ask someone before you post or share that photo. It doesn’t matter if you’re posting a picture on social media, putting it on your blog or website, or just texting it to someone else, anytime you send a photo in any way to any location, you are “sharing” it, and you need to ask permission first. This is true even if you didn’t take the photo yourself. If someone else sent it to you and you want to post it or send it on to others, ask first. That also goes for photos that aren’t of the person but are of something that belongs to them or is associated with them. This includes things like their bedroom or home, their belongings, even their family members. You might think that picture of a pet pig in a hat is super cute, but maybe the owner doesn’t want others to see that. You don’t know! That’s why you have to ask.

Dr. Elizabeth Englander is the founder and executive director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State University. As a researcher and a professor of psychology for 25 years, she is an award-winning and nationally recognized expert in the areas of bullying and cyberbullying, childhood causes of aggression and abuse, and children’s use of technology. She lives near Boston, Massachusetts. Katharine Covino, assistant professor of English studies at Fitchburg State University, teaches writing, literature, and teacher-preparation classes. Prior to teaching at the university level, she taught middle school and high school in Austin, Texas. schooling, school graduation, or moving up to the next grade. All of these moments can be honored in a particularly special way by allowing the guest of honor—YOU—to decide how you might like to PAY IT FORWARD and share the joy of the occasion with others. You can find a way to give back in a small but meaningful way that shows your gratitude for the moment you are experiencing and the support of your family and friends. When you were a child, if your family was able and inclined to create a celebration for your birthday, there may have been many things that made the day fun: cake, games, friends, decorations, gifts. Now that you are older, you may not need a lot of fanfare and presents to feel loved and appreciated. It’s enough to be with people that you love, doing things that you enjoy. You should acknowledge happy, important moments in any way that feels appropriate for you and your family, and I suggest that you can also find space within your celebration to share the joy of your special day with others. This chapter provides suggestions to SHARE YOUR CREATIVITY to EXPRESS GRATITUDE and PAY IT FORWARD while honoring your special moments. Some of the ideas encourage you to RAISE MONEY AND AWARENESS around issues you care about, to COLLECT DONATIONS in lieu of receiving gifts, or to MAKE TIME TO VOLUNTEER with friends as part of your celebration.

Five Ways to Honor Your Special Moments with Kindness and Generosity As you get older, you and your family will likely recognize many milestones that mark important steps along your journey to adulthood. For example, every birthday is an opportunity to appreciate you and the day you were born. Beyond birthdays, there are other special moments when your family and friends might gather to witness, honor, and celebrate you. These events might include a confirmation or First Holy Communion, a quinceañera or sweet sixteen, a bar or bat mitzvah, an Upanayana or Samavartana, the completion of Qur’anic

1. Host a Gathering with a Hands-On Service Project

This whole chapter is about inserting some goodness and generosity into your birthday or milestone moments, but here I list some simple ideas for creating a party with a purpose, a gathering where you invite friends to join you in a hands-on service project. You want your service work to be fun, engaging, and hopefully enlightening for your guests while still allowing time for socializing, eating, music, games, or whatever else you enjoy.
