The Freeze Frame Youth Jury provides seven young people between the ages of nine and 14 with the opportunity to see all the films at the Freeze Frame Film Festival and award the Youth Jury Prize for Best Feature Film and the National Film Board Youth Jury Prize for Best Animated Short. Members of the Youth Jury will take a workshop on film criticism, meet our guest artists and benefit from additional informal training provided by Freeze Frame staff. In order to be considered for the Youth Jury students must submit a 250 word critique of a film or television program in French or English by February 15, 2013.

Mum and Dad complete the bird neighbourhood and cheer, WOO HOO! HOORAY! A strong wind blows the rope ladder up in the air, far, far away! Mum and Dad are stuck in the tree! They discuss the oppression that plagued their everyday lives and how they dealt with it. Blood Memory: In psychology, genetic memory or “blood memory” is a memory present at birth that exists in the absence of sensory experience, and is incorporated into the genome over long spans of time. This concept was incorporated in Argyle’s newest film. Blood Memory has won Best Student Film and Best Short Film at the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival.

Fists of Pride is a wonderful story that focuses on the children of migrant workers, specifically boys who enter a Thai boxing camp on the Burmese-Thai border. The documentary follows Little Tiger and his fellow fighters as their Thai coaches prepare them for the annual Water Festival competition. In a boxing camp on the ThaiBurmese border the children of mostly illegal migrant workers fleeing Burma live and train for prize fights. In a region where combat sports have always been a matter of honor and money, the film reveals their daily struggles. Bets are open and as the hope of prize money prizes, the young boxers contemplate what it could mean for them and their families.

Full Day Workshops $12/student 10:00 am to 2:30 pm THINKING CRITICALLY ABOUT FILM AND VIDEO

These workshops explore the language of film, video and media and develop your students’ skills by taking them through a series of creative exercises. MEDIA THEORY From Hollywood movies to social media - discuss, analyze and critique it all. SCREENWRITING & STORYBOARDING Learn how to develop a script and storyboard for your classroom media projects with the help of a local filmmaker. EDITING WORKSHOP For tech-savvy students: Take their editing skills to the next level with a local filmmaker. ACTING FOR THE CAMERA Led by a local actor, students will harness their dramatic flair and get some important pointers on how to act for the big screen.

MAKING YOUR OWN VIDEOS: FROM BIG IDEAS TO THE BIG SCREEN

A variety of full day workshops offer educators the opportunity to make a Video in a Day with their students. The workshops include: original story development, storyboard creation, character development, instruction for use of technical equipment (cameras, tripods etc), shooting (with the assistance of our facilitators), and instruction for editing. FILM IN A DAY Shoot a film, and edit it all in one day with your students and a local filmmaker. DOCUMENTARY Work with a local professional and learn how to research, script, direct, and ask the tough questions needed to make a good documentary. ANIMATION IN A DAY (clay, paper, paint or “junk”) Create a stop-motion video using different mediums. PIXILATION Students become the characters in their own stop-motion video.

Work with a local animator to create a short animation that will be used in a music video for local Winnipeg Band Indicator Indicator! CNC: NEWS BY YOU! (Grades 8+ only) work with Community News Commons to report on stories that are important to you and your students using video. MAKING THE NEWS WITH GLOBAL TV (Grades 9+) Join Eva Kovacs and Deb Krywenko of Global Winnipeg as they lead you through workshop on how to plan, write, interview, shoot and edit a story. You might even see your work on Global TV!

A youth based networking event powered by media, art and creativity for ages 14-19 Are your students interested in the media industry and would like to work in film, journalism, gaming or web development?

Youth will develop their skills in networking, self-marketing and career development in the media industries, while sharing real life experiences and having fun with established industry professionals at Reel Jobz. The program includes: • A one-hour seminar (at your school) to help youth groom their resumes, give them tips on personal presentation and the power of self-marketing. • A round table with industry professionals: Everyone, from the most successful producer to the prop guy started at some point. Professionals will share their experiences on how they got there. It will also be a $ great way to highlight all the different jobs available in the film and media industry. ACTING FOR THE CAMERA Learn important skills for acting for the big screen under the guidance of a local actor.
