Over the last 20 years more than 1000 films have been shown at Freeze Frame, often telling stories of children going through very difficult circumstances, from the loss of loved ones to being caught in a war, in many different parts of the world. It only made sense for us on our 20th anniversary to ask our audience to help with refugees in need arriving in Winnipeg.
Au cours des 20 dernières années, le Festival Freeze Frame a présenté plus de 1000 films, racontant souvent les histoires d’enfants en proie à des situations difficiles depuis la perte d’un proche jusqu’à être pris dans une guerre qu’ils ne comprennent pas. Il était logique que pour notre 20ème anniversaire nous demandions à nos spectateurs d’aider les réfugiés dans le besoin qui arrivent dans notre ville.

In recognition of the plight of refugees worldwide, Freeze Frame presents three films this year that shine a spotlight on refugees and immigrants. We are asking the audience at tonight’s screening of Bekas to make a donation that will benefit IRCOM House and L’Accueil francophone, two non-profit organizations helping refugees and immigrants in Manitoba. Freeze Frame’s Media Zone will open its doors immediately after the screening. Check it out!
Le Festival Freeze Frame présente cette année trois films qui parlent de l’expérience des réfugiés et immigrants. Nous demandons aux spectateurs de cette projection de faire une donation dont le montant sera reversé à IRCOM House et l’Accueil francophone, deux organismes sans but lucratif qui soutiennent les immigrants et les réfugiés au Manitoba. For two decades, Freeze Frame has made experiencing diversity and culture through film-based multimedia possible for countless young people in our community. I wish to commend the organizers, filmmakers, and volunteers for the hard work that goes into creating this cherished celebration of cinematic excellence.

Twenty years ago when we first launched the idea of creating and international film festival for young people in Winnipeg, we never imagined that in 2016 we would celebrate its 20th edition – even less that we would find ourselves once again running the Festival! Much has changed in 20 years, films are delivered in a digital format and not on 35mm film reels in metal cases with stamps from all the countries where the film had played; workshops are delivered with I-pads and not traditional video cameras. Pascal is now a recognized writer-director working primarily in television and Nicole runs On Screen Manitoba, the media production industry association.

On the other hand, much remains the same – the magic of watching a film in a theatre on the big screen; the commitment of the Freeze Frame Board of Directors, its staff and volunteers; the wonderment of the youngest audiences and the sparkle in the eye of the oldest audiences. There is a fantastic energy around Freeze Frame, the special energy that comes from an event that makes a difference, that opens you to new discoveries about yourself and about the world; the kind of energy that creativity, communication and a shared human cultural experience inspires. A very warm thank you to the many people too numerous to name who have contributed to make Freeze Frame International Film Festival a vital and dynamic event.
présidente du conseil d’administration / directeur artistique et général Il y a plus de 20 ans, quand nous avons lancé l’idée de créer un festival international de films pour enfants à Winnipeg, nous ne nous doutions pas qu’en 2016, celui-ci fêterait sa 20ème édition. Nous nous doutions encore moins que, par l’ironie du hasard, nous nous retrouverions tous les deux, encore une fois, à la tête du festival en question. Bien des choses ont changée en 20 ans : les films arrivent sous format numérique et non plus en bobines de 35mm, dans les ateliers pratiques, on n’utilise plus de caméras traditionnelles, mais des Ipads. Pascal est devenu un cinéaste reconnu et Nicole dirige On Screen Manitoba, l’association de la production audiovisuelle au Manitoba. En revanche, d’autres choses n’ont pas changées : la magie des films, le dévouement des membres du conseil d’administration, des employés et des bénévoles, l’émerveillement des plus jeunes et l’étincelle dans les yeux des plus vieux. Une formidable énergie entoure encore Freeze Frame, l’énergie des évènements qui font une différence, qui éveillent les esprits sur le monde et sur eux-mêmes, l’énergie de la créativité, de la communication et de la communion avec l’expérience d’autres jeunes à travers le monde. Nos remerciements à tous ceux, trop nombreux pour les citer, qui au fil des ans ont contribué à ce Festival.

YOUTH JURY AWARD Earlier this year budding film critics and reviewers ages 9 – 14 were invited to submit their work for a chance to develop their skills as film critics. After attending a workshop on film criticism led by Alison Gillmor, meeting our guest artists and viewing all the films in the Festival, the Youth Jury will announce their choice for winners in the categories of Best Short Film, Best Documentary and Best Feature Film at the Closing Ceremonies on Sunday March 13. Plus tôt cette année, Freeze Frame a invité des jeunes de 9 à 14 ans à participer à un concours pour développer leurs compétence en tant que critiques de films. Après avoir assisté à un atelier donné par Alison Gillmor, rencontré nos invités et regardé tous les films sélectionnés, le Jury des jeunes annoncer a les gagnants dans les catégories suivantes : court métrage, long métrage, documentaire, à la cérémonie de clôture du festival le dimanche 13 mars.
AUDIENCE AWARD YOU CAN VOTE TOO! As an audience member you too can vote for best feature and best short film at this year’s Festival. Get your ticket to vote from one of our Volunteers when you enter a screening, put it in the ballot box when you exit, and find out who the Audience Award winners are at the Closing Night Reception on Sunday March 13!

YOUTH VIDEO CONTEST The Youth Video Contest celebrates the creative efforts of young people in two age groups: WEE REELS • Video submissions from Grade 8 and under REEL VIEWS • Video submissions from Grades 9 through 12 Winners will be revealed at a ceremony on Thursday March 10 at 6:30 pm, with a reception to follow.

Ekrem Ergün Ekrem Ergün grew up in Turkey and Berlin. He studied Media Science at the University of Potsdam and acting in Berlin. Numerous engagements with theatre followed, along with film and television productions. In 2012 he started the production company Storming Donkey Productions with his partner in life and business, Stefanie Plattner. Ekrem Ergün makes his debut as a film director with Hördur. Ekrem Ergün a grandi en Turquie et à Berlin. Il a étudié la science des Médias à l’université de Postdam et le jeu d’acteur à Berlin. Il a beaucoup travaillé au théâtre, au cinéma et à la télévision. En 2012, il crée sa propre compagnie de production Storming Donkey Productions avec sa partenaire Stefanie Plattner. Hördur est le premier long métrage de Ekrem Ergün comme réalisateur.
India Desjardins India Desjardins is the author of the popular series The Diary of Aurélie Laflamme, which has sold more than a million and a half copies in French. In addition to translations in German, Italian, Lithuanian and Portuguese, the series was the basis for two movie adaptations, in 2010 and 2015, for which she also wrote the screenplays. Known for her humour, her sensitivity and her unbridled imagination, India Desjardins loves to vary the stories, the styles and the age of her characters in inspired ways. India Desjardins est l’auteure de la populaire série Le journal d’Aurélie Laflamme, dont plus de 1,5 millions d’exemplaires ont été vendus dans la francophonie. En plus de traductions en Allemagne, Italie, Lithuanie et au Portugal, la série a fait l’objet de deux adaptations cinématographiques, en 2010 et 2015, dont elle a écrit les scénarios. Reconnue pour son humour, sa sensibilité et son imagination débridée, India Desjardins aime varier les histoires, les styles et l’âge de ses personnages au gré de son inspiration..
Amanda Strong Amanda Strong is an Indigenous filmmaker and media artist currently based on unceded Coast Salish territory in Vancouver. Originating from the Metis (Anishinaabe, Cree, Assiniboine) Nation and mixed Polish, Irish and Scottish blood, her work comes from a highly personal space exploring ideas of blood memory, and Indigenous ideology. Amanda’s artistry is rooted in photography, illustration and media. These elements of her practice extend into her award-winning work that uses complex, beautiful imagery and characters to weave together meaningful short films. Amada Strong est une cinéaste et artiste médiatique autochtone basée sur un territoire Coast Salish non cédé de Vancouver. D’origine Métis (Anishinaabe, Cri, Assiniboine et Polonais, Irlandais, et Écossais), son travail provient d’une source très personnelle où elle explore les concepts de mémoire du sang et d’idéologie autochtone. L’art d’Amanda a des racines dans la photographie, l’illustration et les médias.
