Mission Statement: Freeze Frame provides educational opportunities for

children and youth to explore the art of filmmaking and multi-media, through screenings of international film and video and hands-on workshops in a multilingual and multicultural environment.

Board President, Freeze Frame On behalf of the Board of Directors, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 17th annual Freeze Frame International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages! I’ve always felt there was something truly magical about sitting in a darkened theatre watching movies. When the lights go down and the images appear on screen, movies are a timeless way to escape from our daily routine and one of our culture’s greatest forms of entertainment. Whether on a big or small screen, on a mobile or digital device, movies forever captivate and entertain people young and old the world over. To be a small part of a festival that helps to celebrate and showcase film is an honor. The festival wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our many sponsors, volunteers and staff, so behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend my

heartfelt thanks to the organizers and welcome all of you, the audience, to share in the joy that are the movies.

J’ai toujours ressenti quelque chose de vraiment magique lorsque je suis assis dans une salle assombrie, lorsque les lumières s’éteignent et que des images apparaissent sur l’écran. Les films sont une façon intemporelle d’échapper de notre vie quotidienne et l’une des plus grandes formes de divertissement de notre culture. Que ce soit sur un petit écran ou sur un grand écran, sur un appareil mobile ou numérique, les films ont le pouvoir de captiver et d’amuser les jeunes de tout age à travers le monde entier. Jouer une petite partie d’un festival qui permet de célébrer et mettre en valeur le film est un honneur. Le festival ne serait pas possible sans le généreux soutien de nos nombreux commanditaires, de nos bénévoles et de notre personnel. Artistic Director This is Freeze Frame’s 17th year and our second year hosting the film festival at 340 Provencher in St.Boniface. We are settling into our new home and love being part of the community. Our Media Arts Centre is busier than ever, running programs for all ages throughout the province – almost every day of the year. Stepping back and looking at the reach of Freeze Frame as an organization reveals that deep roots are settling in… and something very beautiful is growing here. Thanks to a network of filmmakers, artists, teachers, young people, parents, businesses, funding agencies and policy-makers, Freeze Frame is a leader in our community. The festival is a great time for the Freeze Frame community to come together and celebrate not only great cinema from around the world but also, all the hard work we do. Directeur artistique Il s’agit de la 17ème édition du Festival Freeze Frame et de notre deuxième année au 340 Provencher à Saint-Boniface. Nous sommes installés dans notre nouvelle maison et nous aiment faire partie de la communauté. Notre Centre d’arts médiatiques est plus occupé que jamais auparavant en livrant des programmes pour jeunes dans toute la province - presque tous les jours de l’année. En prenant du recul et en regardant le cheminement de l’organisation de Freeze

Frame, il se révèle que des racines profondes s’installent dans la communauté du film ... et quelque chose de très beau se développe ici. Freeze Frame est un leader dans notre communauté, grace à un reseau de cineastes, d’artistes, d’enseignants, de jeunes, de parents, d’enterprises, d’organismes de financement, et de decideurs. Le festival est une occasion de rassembler la communauté Freeze Frame et de célébrer non seulement du cinéma du monde entier, mais aussi, tout le travail que nous faisons. The Clément Brothers, Chuck and Andy have embarked on an extraordinary planetary adventure, Planet Echo, that showcases and celebrates many of the positive things that are being done to make the planet we call home. Charles has produced, hosted, written, directed, acted, managed, pulled cables, and been a runner on hundreds of hours of television for broadcasters such as APTN, Shaw, CBC, CanWest Global, TSN and SRC. André has been producing media in radio, television and film since his teenage years. A consummate traveler, André is passionate about cultures the world over and has worked with them to tell their stories; from his own backyard all the way to the amazon rainforest!

Les frères Clément, Chuck et Andy se sont lancés dans une aventure extraordinaire planetaire, Planète Echo, qui illustre et célèbre plusieurs choses positives qui font que notre planète est un endroit ou il fait bon vivre et ou on se sent bien. Charles a produit, accueilli, ecrit, réalisé, joué, géré, câblé-tiré, et été un coursier sur des centaines d’heures de télévision des diffuseurs tels que APTN, Shaw, Société Radio-Canada, CanWest Global, TSN et CBC. André s’implique dans la production de médias à la radio, à la télévision et au cinéma depuis ses années d’adolescence. Un voyageur consommé, André est un passionné de cultures du monde entier et a travaillé avec eux pour raconter leurs histoires, de sa propre arrière-cour à la forêt amazonienne!

L’association Cumulo Nimbus (Toulouse, France) Valentine Martin grew up in the countryside, in the middle of a forest that offered plenty of freedom and inspired her imagination. Valentine founded l’association Cumulo Nimbus with David Audry and Valeria Venturelli to help children develop their creativity and imagination and introduce them to animation as a medium for an original and entertaining look at the world that surrounds them. Passionate about drawing, and crafts of all kinds, at the age of 18 Claire Ledru attended the Estienne School in Paris. There she had the opportunity to learn about video and animation. After a year in Andalusia, she moved to Toulouse and discovered l’association Cumulo Nimbus. After meeting with the team, she began working with them in January 2013.

L’association Cumulo Nimbus (Toulouse, France) Valentine Martin a grandit à la campagne, au milieu d’une forêt qui lui procure beaucoup d’espace de liberté ce qui inspire son imagination. Valentine fonde avec David Audry et Valéria Venturelli l’association Cumulo Nimbus pour inviter les enfants à développer leur créativité et leur imagination, dans le but de leur faire découvrir le cinéma d’animation comme moyen d’expression original et ludique afin d’apporter un regard sur le monde qui les entoure. Passionnée de dessin, et de travaux manuels de tout genre, à l’âge de 18 ans Claire Ledru joint l’école Estienne à Paris. C’est à cette école qu’elle a l’occasion de découvrir la vidéo et le cinéma d’animation. Après une année passée en Andalousie, elle s’installe à Toulouse et découvre l’association Cumulo Nimbus. Suite à sa rencontre avec l’équipe, elle débute un service civique en janvier 2013.

Erika makes video art, writes and edits documentaries and as a videographer and editor, facilitates the creation of other artists’ work. Important to her practice are community and environmental engagement, mentoring and teaching. Erika is the recipient of numerous awards from the Canadian, Manitoban and Winnipeg Arts Councils and has screened work nationally and internationally.

Blood Memory: In psychology, genetic memory or “blood memory” is a memory present at birth that exists in the absence of sensory experience, and is incorporated into the genome over long spans of time. This concept was incorporated in Argyle’s newest film. Blood Memory has won Best Student Film and Best Short Film at the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival.

Cette aventure exotique s’étend de Paris à l’Afrique et explore des thèmes de la vie, de la mort, des valeurs, et de l’absurdité des actions des humains.

Les poings de la fierté raconte le quotidien de Petit Tigre et de ses camarades dans un camp de boxe thaï à la frontière de la Birmanie. Fils de travailleurs migrants, pour la plupart illégaux, les garçons sont entrainés à la dure par des instructeurs thaïs en vu des combats du Festival de l’Eau qui les opposent annuellement à des jeunes thaïs. Dans cette région du monde, où les sports de combat sont depuis toujours une affaire d’honneur et d’argent, le film révèle comment la boxe est pour plusieurs jeunes exilés birmans et leur famille l’unique gage de survie. Les paris sont ouverts et la cagnotte varie selon l’impétuosité des jeunes boxeurs sur le ring. N’oubliez pas de voter pour votre long- et court-métrages préférés. Les films recevant le Prix du Public seront annoncés à la clôture du Festival.

Guest Workshop Facilitators / Nos intervenants invité(e)s BRIAN DUCHSCHERER (Winnipeg, MB) 3D Animation - Emma’s Wings Brian Duchscherer has been making stop-motion animated films since he was twelve. Now he’s managed to get people to pay him to do it. He’s made films for The National Film Board of Canada, and worked on several television shows including Poko, Lunar Jim, and Phantom Investigators. Brian has won numerous awards and also taught animation and script writing in workshops and universities across the country. He loves a good story, and especially loves to work on one.

KATIA GOSSELIN (Montreal, QC) “Move it!” Stop-motion Workshop Katia has worked in photography for over 13 years. In addition to national expositions, in 2008, she participated in an exposition in Bruxelles and at the Exposition universelle in Shanghai in 2010. Katia is working on a co-production with Winnipeg artist, Éric Lesage to be presented next march at La Maison des artistes visuels francophones de Winnipeg. She also teaches photography and stop-motion workshops in schools. 28

Maintenant, il a réussi de mener les gens à lui payer pour le faire ! Il a réalisé des films pour l’Office national du film du Canada et a travaillé sur plusieurs émissions de télévision, y compris Poko, Lunar Jim et Phantom Investigators. Brian a remporté de nombreux prix et a également enseigné l’animation et l’écriture de scénario à des universités à travers le pays. Il aime une bonne histoire … particulièrement quand il peut travailler sur celle-ci.

Katia s’est orientée vers la photographie il y a 13 ans. En plus d’exposer au niveau national, en 2008 elle participe à une exposition à Bruxelles et en 2010, elle participe à l’Exposition universelle de Shanghai. Reel Jobz Friday March 8th in The Media Zone (in English) Are your students interested in the media industry and would like to work in film, journalism, gaming or web development? Youth will develop their skills in networking, self-marketing and career development in the media industries, while sharing real life experiences and having fun with established industry professionals at Reel Jobz. • A round table with industry professionals: Everyone, from the most successful producer to the prop guy started at some point. Professionals will share their experiences on how they got there. It will also be a great way to highlight all the different jobs available in the film and media industry. • Reel Jobz Rally: Youth will play games with the pros while learning from them. This activity takes place in our MEDIA ZONE and is an opportunity for youth to develop and showoff skills to win some prizes
