OPENING & CLOSING CEREMONIES 1:00 pm, Sunday March 4, CCFM, 340 Provencher Blvd. Join us on Sunday afternoon March 4 for a free screening of the Festival’s opening film Nelly & Simon: Mission Yeti and meet the film’s director, Pierre Gréco. This year’s program is characterized by truly outstanding performances from young actors around the globe in films from Sweden, France, Colombia, Italy, the Netherlands, Croatia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Germany, Spain and Canada. On the final afternoon, Sunday, March 11, we present Girl in Flight at 1:00 pm, director Sandra Vanucchi’s evocative story of a fleeting friendship in Rome between two young girls from very different backgrounds. The Festival’s closing ceremony follows at 3:00 pm with the presentation of Hero Steps, a story of hope and resilience from Colombia by director Henry Rincón. This is a free event for all.

Cette année le programme de Freeze Frame offre des performances de jeunes acteurs vraiment exceptionnelles dans des films en provenance des quatre coins du monde : Suède, France, Colombie, Italie, Pays-Bas, Brésil, Burkina-Faso, Allemagne, Espagne et Canada. Le dimanche 11 mars, le film Italien Girl in Flight de Sandra Vanucchi, qui raconte l’amitié fugace de deux jeunes filles de milieux très différents, jouera à 13h. La cérémonie de clôture du festival aura lieu à 15h avec la présentation de Hero Steps de Henry Rincón, une histoire d’espoir et survie dans une petite ville de Colombie.
President of the Board / Présidente du conseil d’administration When we first had the idea of creating a film festival for children in Winnipeg more than 22 years ago one of our first initiatives was to show some foreign films to a parents’ group. To our surprise they responded immediately, saying, ‘’It feels good to see parents who are more like us!’’ We realized then that by showing films that would convey more diverse images of childhood, they would also convey more diverse images of families and parents. This year’s selection of movies shows families who are all quite different: from the depressed mother in Girl in Flight, whose illness affects the whole family, to the separated but loving parents of the wonderful The Day My Father Became a Bush, from the immigrant father of Wallay struggling to raise his two sons, to the father in Storm: Letter of Fire who shows his son the value of freedom of expression - all of the situations and portraits ring true. Even in the lighter mode of comedy, the Fox who raises chicks in The Big Bad Fox is endearing in his efforts. Paradoxically, it’s by seeing diversity in people that we can recognize ourselves in them. Because children, like parents, are all different from each other but also share the same human condition. Directeur artistique et producteur exécutif / Artistic Director & Executive Producer Quand l’idée nous est venue de créer un festival de films pour enfants à Winnipeg, il y plus de 22 ans, une de nos premières initiatives a été de montrer quelques films étrangers à un groupe de parents., À notre surprise, leur réaction a été de dire : « Ça fait du bien de voir des parents qui sont plus comme nous ! ». Nous avons alors réalisé qu’en voulant projeter à Winnipeg des images d’enfants différentes de celles qu’on voyait habituellement à la télé ou au cinéma, nous allions également montrer des images de parents et de familles différentes. La sélection de films de cette année nous présente des familles diversifiées, depuis la mère dépressive de Girl in Flight, dont la maladie affecte toute la famille, jusqu’aux parents séparés mais affectueux du merveilleux The Day My Father Became a Bush. Du papa immigré africain de Wallay qui élève avec difficulté ses deux garçons, jusqu’au père engagé de Storm – Letter of Fire, qui enseigne à son fils l’importance de la liberté d’expression, les situations et les portraits sonnent juste. Et même sur le mode de la comédie, le Renard qui élève des poussins dans Le Grand méchant renard, nous amuse et nous touche en même temps. Paradoxalement, c’est en montrant la diversité des gens qu’on se reconnaît en eux. Car les enfants, comme les parents sont tous différents, mais partagent une même condition humaine. Welcome to the 2018 edition of the Freeze Frame International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages. Through their art, filmmakers provide us with different perspectives. This year, these films for young people offer stories of how heroes and heroines can meet the challenges and obstacles in a complex world that they inherit.
Bienvenue à Freeze Frame de 2018, le Festival international de films pour enfants de tous âges. Par leur art, les cinéastes nous offrent différentes perspectives. Cette année, les films pour jeunes racontent comment les héros et héroïnes arrivent à surmonter les défis et les obstacles dans le monde complexe dont ils ont hérité.

It used to be that there were films for adults and films for younger viewers. The Freeze Frame Festival shows us that a film today can appeal to audiences of all ages — these movies can open up possibilities for conversation about difficult topics, provide a window into other cultures, and bridge a gap between generations. The films this year, while engaging and entertaining the viewer, show brave and resilient young people who have lessons to teach us all. On behalf of the City of Winnipeg and my City Council colleagues, I want to recognize the passion behind the scenes of the Freeze Frame Festival — the organizers and volunteers whose tireless efforts bring the Festival to life, the filmmakers who bring their imagination and vision to life before our eyes, and the audiences who are the lifeblood of Winnipeg’s vibrant arts and cultural scene. Jadis, il y avait des films qui étaient destinés aux adultes et d’autres aux jeunes. Several decades ago, our country’s filmmakers dreamed of offering Canadians more stories based on Canadian experiences. In 1967, the development of an original model for funding films in Canada led to the creation of Telefilm Canada.

2017 marked our 50th anniversary! What a great opportunity this gave us to celebrate 50 years of talent— to honour those who helped build this industry, including our partners, Freeze Frame International Film Festival for Kids of All Ages, their staff and volunteers, as well as the actors, directors, screenwriters, producers and technicians who, due to their incredible talent, show Canada to the world. And, of course, I want to thank you the audience for watching Canadian movies for the last five decades, for talking about them, for sharing them—for allowing them to live and breathe. Looking to the next 50 years, the future is bright for Canadian cinema with a diverse generation of emerging talent creating content for screens of all sizes. PIERRE GRÉCO Pierre Gréco is a filmmaker from Québec. After completing his studies in cinema at Concordia in 1984, he worked on commercials, documentaries and fiction films. He wrote 156 episodes for the animated series W which was broadcast on Teletoon as well as in 40 territories around the world, including Asia.
Pierre Greco est un réalisateur de la région de Québec. Après avoir complété ses études en cinéma à Concordia en 1984, il a fait de tout : pubs, corpos, documentaires, œuvres de commande et fictions. Il a scénarisé 156 épisode de la série d’animation W (Télétoon et 40 autres territoires dans le monde, notamment en Asie).
After completing the feature film Le Coq de St-Victor, which he co-wrote and directed, he collaborated with Nancy Savard on the making of the comedy adventure Nelly and Simon: Mission Yeti.

NICOLE VAN KILSDONK Nicole van Kilsdonk is a graduate of the Academy of Journalism and the Dutch Film and Television Academy for Direction and Screenplay. After directing documentaries she decided to direct and write fiction, working on a number of television films including Deining which won a Dutch Oscar for Best TV drama in 2004. In 2006 she directed the children’s serial De taxi van Palemu, which was shot in Suriname. She went on to direct four feature films, garnering international awards including the Cinekid Award for Best Film for Taking Chances in 2011. Most recently she directed Ventoux and The Day My Father Became a Bush, which is based on the book of the same name by award-winning author Joke van Leeuwen.

Earlier this year budding film critics and reviewers ages 11 – 16 were invited to apply for a chance to develop their skills as film critics. After attending a workshop on film criticism led by Howard Curle, meeting our guest artists and viewing all the films in the Festival, the Youth Jury will announce their choice for winners in the categories of Best Short film and Best Feature film or Documentary at the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, March 11.

YOUTH VIDEO CONTEST Each year aspiring young filmmakers ages 6 to 18 years are invited to enter Freeze Frame’s Youth Video Contest. Contestants enter in one of two age groups: • WEE REELS FOR THOSE IN GRADE 8 OR UNDER • REEL VIEWS FOR THOSE IN GRADES 9 TO 12 The Youth Video Contest entries are judged by a panel of professionals drawn from Winnipeg’s media arts community. On THURSDAY, MARCH 8 the award winners in both the WEE REELS and REEL VIEWS categories will be revealed at a special ceremony in PAULINE BOUTAL HALL beginning at 6:30 PM, with a reception to follow.
FREEZE FRAME IS GRATEFUL TO THESE INDIVIDUALS WHO CONTRIBUTED THEIR TIME AND EXPERTISE TO THIS YEAR’S CONTEST: KARIN ADAMS is the author of five humorous novels for middle grade readers and an enthusiastic presenter of creative writing workshops for students through the Manitoba Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools program. EDDIE AYOUB is an artist and Artistic Director of Wanda Koop’s community art centre Art City, whose programming he has directed for a decade. As co-chair of the Manitoba Artist-Run Centres Coalition (MARCC), he represents Manitoba on the national Artist-Run Centres and Collectives Conference Board.

Le jeudi 8 mars, les gagnants des diverses catégories de ‘TITES VUES et VUES VÉRITÉ seront révélés au cours d’une soirée de gala dans la sale PAULINE BOUTAL DU CCFM. La soirée commence à 18H30. Une réception suivra.

ANITA LEBEAU is an award-winning animator who has also created several documentaries through MTS. She teaches animation at the University of Manitoba as well as for the Manitoba Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools program. LEONA KRAHN is a producer, writer, and director of documentaries, dramatic shorts and corporate video. Her productions have been broadcast on several Canadian networks and recognized with multiple national and international awards and nominations.
SEAN GARRITY is an award-winning filmmaker whose feature films have been selected by some of the world’s most prestigious festivals. They have been screened commercially across Canada and internationally, sold around the world, and translated into more than 15 languages.

Our digital playground offers a chance to explore new developments in technology with media art installations. Come to play, learn and experiment! This year the Media Zone shines the spotlight on virtual reality (VR), with New Media Manitoba and On Screen Manitoba presenting several projects from Manitoba companies. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will bring two virtual reality documentary projects to the Media Zone plus another project featuring augmented reality. There’s other great surprises too!
