In this special keynote address Mack McCarthy will illuminate the desperate (pathologically-human?) quest for empire, and how Fremantle itself came so late as a pawn in an international game. Join us for refreshments after the talk. Presented by: The University of Notre Dame Australia and the City of Fremantle Professor Michael (Mack) McCarthy is a senior archaeologist of the Maritime Museum in Western Australia. A public speaker of note, his research has gained popular attention in recent years partly as a result of his role in the discovery of the wrecks of William Dampier’s Roebuck and L’Uranie, the transport of the lovers Rose and Louis deFreycinet in the Atlantic and the HMAS Sydney, Australia’s most significant naval loss of the Second World War off Shark Bay. In this keynote address for the Fremantle Heritage Festival, Professor McCarthy will chart the progress of empires as they inexorably made their way to Fremantle by the nineteenth century.

Fremantle Arts Centre WWII Time Window Tour Visitors are invited to borrow iPads from Fremantle Arts Centre's reception and take a free augmented reality tour that shows them how the FAC site would have looked when the American Navy Submarine fleet used the Lunatic Asylum as a depot during WWII. The tour creates a window back in time where American sailors, colourful locals and the building itself literally comes to life before your eyes. At specific nodes around the building, the Time Window app (which visitors can download onto their own iPads for free at home or borrow one of FAC’s), will bring these scenes to life. Prepare to be amazed and inspired! The app is a pilot project for Frame.AR brought about by a partnership between Screen West, Lotterywest, FAC and Frame.AR.

A(nother) town like Fremantle? Like Fremantle, Valparaiso, Chile, developed as a Victorian Port City. For many years it serviced the rich mining industry and was the last (or first) port of call for ships rounding Cape Horn but the construction of the Panama Canals and changing technology saw Valparaiso decline and be taken over by artists and the like. Recently, the port city has experienced revitalization and received a world heritage listing. Anne Brake, President of the Fremantle History Society, recently visited Valparaiso and was interested in the similarities in the development and changing fortunes of these two port cities – Fremantle and Valparaiso. Anne will apply her 20 years of experience working in and around the heritage industry to explore some of the issues associated with conserving and interpreting the heritage of these places, the world heritage aspirations of both and the opportunities to be embraced. Currently many objects are publically visible, but much more is conserved in storage. More than 'a mere drinking shop'? A story of the Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club 1914-2014 The Fremantle Workers Social and Leisure Club, founded in 1914, was based on the ideals of Billy Clare who declared that 'our club never has been, and never will be, a mere drinking shop. It was founded upon high ideals...' What were these ideals and how has the Club reflected these over the last 100 years? Notre Dame historian, Dr Jane Davis, is writing a history of the Club and has these answers. Come along and hear about how the Club, through its varied activities, has lived up to Clare's ideals and learn about a few of the scandals that occurred along the way.

Walking t West End Associate Professor Deborah Gare and Dr Shane Burke, The University of Notre Dame Australia The story of Fremantle begins in two places: in this country called Walyalup, which was home to the Wadjuk Noongar people; and in London, where the British imagined a new frontier of their empire on the isolated coast of New Holland. These two worlds collided in 1829 when Stirling's first British migrants arrived at the place he called Fremantle. In the years which followed, the town's history was filled with rich stories of war and peace, love and loss, and boom and bust. Join some of Notre Dame's leading historical scholars as they walk the streets of the West End, bringing to life the extraordinary moments, stories and places which filled our town from 1829 to 1900. Please be aware that this tour will involve the climbing of stairs and the crossing of public streets.

Fremantle Eisteddfod The Fremantle Eisteddfod is a music competition that has been running for 35 years. Instrumental, vocal and choral performers are attracted to this highly reputed competition from all over the Perth Metropolitan area and well-known Perth musicians adjudicate and award prizes to our winners. This year there will be approximately 800 performances at the Town Hall from Monday 12 May to Saturday 24 May, beginning at 9am and finishing after 9pm most days. Aspiring young WA musicians participate in a series of heats until a small group of finalists are left to perform in the Finals of Open Concerto and Arias on Friday May 23 from 7.15pm where they will compete for first place and a $2000 prize. The winners are further rewarded by having the opportunity to perform at the Winners Concert on Saturday 24 May. The Choirs Competition will be held on Friday May 16 from 9.30am to 4pm.

As colonial powers took hold of much of Latin American in the early 16th century, the music of this region began to develop. Bird on a Wire High Tea Join us for a fun and creative afternoon where you will enjoy a vintage fashion runway show, the second annual launch of the Bird on a Wire brand and a delightful afternoon tea all while supporting a good cause. Our aim is to raise awareness around the issue of sex trafficking and to raise money for the Child Wise Foundation; 40% of all funds raised at this event will go to this Australian, not-for-profit, child sexual abuse prevention organisation. The afternoon will also involve acoustic sets from Bird on a Wire and readings from The Adventures of Frankie, a collection of short stories in the style of Alice in Wonderland and dedicated to all girls stolen into trafficking and robbed of their voice.
