welcome to the
Evolving from humble but ambitious beginnings in 1999, the Fremantle Street Arts Festival is now Australia’s most important street theatre event. This year’s program boasts 18 international acts performing alongside Australia’s best street theatre artists, buskers, comedians and circus acts. We welcome performers from Argentina and South Africa for the first time and are proud to present six Australian premiere performances. The fun begins with the Opening Night in the grounds of the beautiful Fremantle Arts Centre before the streets of Fremantle are transformed in to a world stage with over 100 live performances across the Easter weekend. Come along and enjoy Fremantle’s famous hospitality and do something a little different. Be shocked, surprised and delighted as this international festival unfolds before your eyes. It’s the perfect opportunity to rediscover Freo. This Street Arts Festival is part of Fremantle’s year-round offering of awesome cultural events that have led to the world-renowned travel publication Lonely Planet selecting the port city as a top 10 ‘Best in Travel’ destination 2016. In the words of Lonely Planet, “there’s more jugglers, mimes, musos and acrobats than loose change in your pocket.” See you on the street! DR BRAD PETTITT FREMANTLE MAYOR
Welcome to the 2016 Fremantle Street Arts Festival. Now in its 17th year, the festival is an increasingly popular fixture on Western Australia’s events calendar, drawing more than 100,000 people to Fremantle over the Easter long weekend. It is a unique chance to see some of the world’s most intriguing street artists as they transform Fremantle’s historic locations into performance sites for theatre, comedy, circus, cabaret, busking and everything in between. Adults and children alike will be amused and enthralled by this year’s packed program, featuring local talents and artists from Argentina, Italy, Niger, France, the Netherlands and beyond. Dynamic cultural experiences, such as this festival, an eclectic mix of boutique hotels, bars and
restaurants, and a strong waterfront focus are just some of the reasons that esteemed publisher, Lonely Planet, named Fremantle a must-see city in 2016. The Fremantle Street Arts Festival is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism Western Australia. Tourism is vital to the State’s economy, with latest figures showing visitors spent $8.9 billion a year in Western Australia. The State Government has a strategy to increase the value of tourism to $12 billion by 2020. Events such as the Fremantle Street Arts Festival are integral to achieving this goal. Not only do events attract visitors, they also boost the economy, add vibrancy to a destination and help raise the State’s profile through valuable media exposure. I hope everyone enjoys the festival and takes time to explore more of historic Fremantle during their visit. DR KIM HAMES MLA MINISTER FOR TOURISM

MUSIC
It takes a special kind of artist to entertain crowds on the streets and many of our performers have travelled across the globe to perform for you in Fremantle. If you’ve enjoyed their performance, put some money in the hat, this is how they make their living.
There’s nothing better than the sounds of live music filling the open air during the festival. Check out this year’s musical acts, be they comedy, folk, international or fusion.
Street Theatre
audio descriptioN

Vision impaired or blind people can enjoy these shows via the Access All Arts audio description program. See page 20 for full details.
ROVING
ticketed show
These performers aren’t static, you’ll see them pop up in places all around Fremantle during the festival. We’ve given you a starting point; see if you can catch them along the way.
While most of the festival action takes place on the streets, there are selected events with limited audiences that require ticketing.
