A CITY OF FREMANTLE FESTIVAL

23 OCTOBER to 1 NOVEMBER

Mayor’s

MESSAGE

-Welcome to the 2015-

Fremantle Festival! As Australia’s longest-running festival, the Fremantle Festival has been constantly evolving over its 110-year history. From a celebration of electric street lighting to an all-inclusive program of visual and performing arts and community events, the Fremantle Festival holds a central place in the culture of Fremantle. In 2015, the festival continues this evolution with the introduction of a festival hub in the very heart of our city. The iconic Fremantle Town Hall will come to life with an incredible 10 night program of events, a free entry alfresco bar area and public art works unfolding before our eyes. Both the opening and closing events of the festival are free to the public and will be a great opportunity to experience this space come to life. But the fun doesn’t stop there – radiating out from the Town Hall is an exciting and original range of events held around Fremantle and surrounding suburbs. Every year, it’s these community-run events that showcase the diversity of Fremantle and the commitment of locals to making our city a leader in arts and culture. In this year’s festival you can experience everything from touring national musicians and comedians to locally produced theatre, to walking tours around the city. And why not learn to make your own bush sculpture using traditional Nyoongar construction techniques or try your luck in a volleyball competition? We’re very excited to announce a new look Wardarnji Aboriginal Cultural festival this year. The event will be a very special celebration of Nyoongar dance, held in the early evening in the beautiful grounds of the Fremantle Arts Centre. This spectacular show will culminate in a mass corroboree in which all are invited to join in. Firm festival favourites such as the Children’s Fiesta, Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival and the ever popular Fremantle Festival Street Parade, which this year celebrates the theme ‘Future Freo’, will all be joining the line-up. There are so many great events as part of this year’s Fremantle Festival, the hard part will be deciding what to see first! Whatever your interests, get down to the Town Hall to find out all you need to know and celebrate everything that makes Fremantle great.

The Field Guide to Homemaking with A Good Looking Man Brendan Hutchens and Andrew Christie Shipwrecked in Fremantle’s King’s Square, artist Andrew Christie must use his wits and skill to do whatever anyone tries to do when they are lost. Make a Home. With nothing but his stranded timber vessel and a knack for collaboration, Andrew will embark on a unique journey through this transformative construction art piece. The Boat will be a destination installation and maker venue that will grow and change over its stay in Fremantle’s Kings Square. Enchanted Worlds

Delineate Matt McVeigh

Tom Muller Key sites of Kings Square are activated by an ephemeral smoke and light installation concealed within the architecture and natural elements of Kings Square. Designed to provoke a sense of sublime and the unexpected, this time-based work infuses the precinct with illusion and magic. WHEN: 23 October – 1 November photo credit – Rising Lotus, Perth International Art Festival 2011, Tom Mùller and Jean-Thomas Vannotti (Maschi Fontana)

Delineate is a kinetic artwork that rotates 24 spirit levels from 6 different points on a flat plain to create line compositions of uniformity and variability based on symbols and structures found in the built urban environment. The work uses the familiar spirit level to reference the constant change and cycle of new and old of the built environment; the tension between creation and destruction, and chaos and order of urban environments. The work is kind of like a mechanical dance. WHEN: 23 October – 1 November

Heart Lines

A Selfish Act

Heart Lines is a new play which centres around the lives of two youths involved in a heart transplant. Although they never meet, the interconnectedness that exists between the heart donor and heart recipient is everpresent. Written by Fremantle playwright, Kerry Bowden and performed by six very talented actors, audiences will enjoy the many tender and humourous vignettes in the play. The rustic PS Art Space is the perfect venue for this moving piece of theatre, ably performed by Tristan Gorey, Tyler Lindsay- Smith, Brodie Masini, Jesse McGinn, Blake Richardson and Nick Stevenson.

When highly sensitive information is released about the government, one civilian’s actions have global consequences – the reverberating effects of which irreparably change the lives of everyone involved. Trapped in an embassy with nowhere else to go, a group of strangers are forced to work together to ensure the safety of their communities. While the world watches the country fall into turmoil, every person must decide where their loyalty lies.

Exhibition Launch: The Colonial Eye Western Australia was reimagined repeatedly by Europeans in the nineteenth century. Some, like Rose Freycinet and Mary Ann Friend, visited briefly while exploring the unknown world. Their paintings are the creation of a foreign and fleeting eye. Others, including Stirling, used artistic license to extol the virtues of the Swan River and its surroundings.
