The West Australian in 1961 when he began his career as a cadet reporter. There was rich fodder for an intrepid young journalist: unsolved murders, boating disasters, prison escapes, heaving brothels, hotel bloodhouses and wild ambulance rides, all of which belied the town’s apparent mercantile respectability. Since then, Robert has become one of the nation’s most notable storytellers, famous for such works as The Bodysurfers and The Shark Net. In this special sunset launch of the Fremantle Heritage Festival, Robert will demonstrate how truth, myth and story can sometimes make for the best of histories. This event also includes the launch of Fremantle: Empire, Faith and Conflict (the latest volume of Studies in Western Australian History) and showcases some of Fremantle’s best historymakers in market stalls.

Following his widely acclaimed recording of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Simon Tedeschi is thrilled to return to Fremantle with ‘Kaleidoscope’. While the repertoire for keyboard is endless, the piano is one of the only instruments to create a truly orchestral sound on its own; the colours and timbres of the instrument have mirrored not only changes in classical music over time, but also evolutions in engineering and architecture. In this program, Simon Tedeschi presents the piano in all its majesty and dynamism - from the heartbreaking lyricism of Schubert, the romance of Chopin, to the visionary dissonance of Prokofiev, and the incandescent swing of Fats Waller.

Fremantle has produced world-beaters on the musical stage
and those who tried it out at Mojo’s Bar are very much a part of the Fremantle legend. Datura4 featuring Dom Mariani (The Stems), Greg Hitchcock (You Am I) as well as Warren Hall and Stu Loasby of too many bands to mention, combine a perfect mix of pop sensibility and ballsy psych-rock, and with guys like this on the stage, one’s evening is in the hands of pros. Also appearing on this night is Donna Simpson from The Waifs – no less. Having co-founded W.A’s infamous label Jarrah Records, and achieved great successes in the U.K and the U.S.A, we’re as proud as punch to have such a songwriter on the stage. The Painkillers, with songs penned by Joe Bludge and James Baker (The Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon), and with the band literally packed with legends, will round out a classic night of good music.

This year The University of Notre Dame Australia will celebrate the power of storytelling as we reveal the vibrant, human histories of our town. Join us for a series of thought-provoking lectures as we entice you with some of the best storytelling of the Festival.
The Magnificent Life of Miss May Holman PRESENTED BY: DR LEKKIE HOPKINS, EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY Throughout the 1930s May Holman was a household name and an inspiration to the women of her generation. She made history in 1925 when, at the age of 31, she followed her father into the seat of Forrest, becoming Australia’s first female Labor parliamentarian. She held the seat until, as the votes were being counted on the night of the 1939 elections, she lost her life in a horrendous motor vehicle accident. Thousands lined the streets of Perth to mourn her passing in the days that followed. Lekkie Hopkins is joining the Fremantle Heritage Festival for the first time, ready to share the extraordinary story of the magnificent May Holman.

Stories from the Swan River: Mary Ann Friend and Fremantle's first five years PRESENTED BY: PROF DEBORAH GARE Mary Ann Friend was not the only early colonist at Swan River to leave behind her stories of the journey here and the life that was experienced. Join Notre Dame’s leading historian, Deborah Gare, in an entertaining event that will reveal the runaway weddings, gruesome murders, lost cows, stolen children and frontier conflict that defined life at Fremantle in its first five years. Deborah will weave the tales of Friend, Jane Roberts, Ralph Entwistle and Dr Tully Daly into an epic story of catastrophe, hope and—often—good humour.

Some feared that beasts roamed the Great Southland and that monsters patrolled its seas. Others dreamed of a mythical land of exotic women and precious jewels. Chris Wortham is no stranger to the geographical, literary and mythological conversations of Renaissance Europeans, being a Shakespearean expert of international renown. Dens of Dirt and Debauchery: Fremantle’s Underbelly, 1900-1950 PRESENTED BY: DR LEIGH STRAW Lonely Planet recently named Fremantle as one of the world’s best tourism cities. It’s quite an achievement for a place once described as the ‘dirtiest town in the State’ and home to social outcasts, ‘rat-infested rookeries’, drunks and ‘roughs’. A hundred years ago, police raids were a regular event on Pakenham, Leake, Bannister and Market Streets where the brothels, pubs and opium dens were clustered. Criminal men and women were serially targeted by law enforcement officers and their stories now fill the records of the papers, courts and the prison. Join popular crime historian and writer, Leigh Straw, as she considers Fremantle’s underside and the infamous crime stories of the early twentieth century that gave the port city its notorious reputation.

WWII TIME WINDOW TOURS
Visitors are invited to borrow iPads from Fremantle Art Centre’s reception and take a free augmented reality tour that shows them how the FAC site would have looked when the American Navy Submarine Fleet used the Lunatic Asylum as a depot during WWII. The tour creates a window back in time where American sailors, colourful locals and the building itself literally come to life before your eyes. At specific nodes around the building, the Time Window app (which visitors can download onto their own iPads for free at home or borrow one of FAC’s), will bring these scenes to life. VICTORIA HALL open day Victoria Hall located at 179 High Street, was designed by Talbot Hobbs and built between 1896 and 1897 as St John's Parish Hall then renamed for the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897 and officially opened by Governor Smith and his wife, 28 September 1897. SPONTANEITY Insider Art: Winter 2016 Insider Art: Winter 2016 will showcase the creative achievements of Western Australian prisoners from across the State. The quarterly exhibitions of prisoner art held in the old ‘Print Shop’ at the Fremantle Prison heritage site are diverse in style, with a strong representation of Aboriginal painting and art objects. Participating in the creative process offers prisoners more than simply education and recreation. For many prisoners it becomes a connection with family, culture and country. The production of artwork can also be an important component in prisoner rehabilitation, enabling prisoners to reframe their identities in positive ways through creativity and personal development. Military Re-enactment Learn more about our soldiers and the uniforms and equipment they used with the Westralian Great War Living History Association at the Army Museum of WA. This group’s members wear uniforms and equipment to commemorate Australian soldiers, airmen and nurses of the 1st AIF from World War One, and sometimes World War Two and the Vietnam War. They take pride in ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of their kit. Visitors will have the opportunity to have their photos taken with the menbers and enjoy a static display of military vehicles from the Veterans Car Club of WA.
