shutters Forget mildew-attracting curtains, plantation style shutters are a great and practical choice for bathrooms. Made to measure for a perfect fit, they can be bought from specialists who will fit.
Q
Why shutters? They are very easy to clean with a damp cloth and offer great privacy without having to be fully closed. They won’t fade in direct sunlight and they come in a range of colours that can be matched to your room scheme. What are they made of? Real wood shutters are treated to suit high-moisture atmospheres. Vinyl lacquered poplar is moisture resistant and offers great colour options. For the best durability however, UPVC or PVCU shutters are a great choice as they are water and fade resistant and come with long guarantees. Who will fit them? It’s easiest to buy from a company such as The Blind Company (see page 5) that will install them for you. Which style should you choose? Full-height shutters are the most popular design and cover the whole window, opening in the centre. Café-style shutters cover the bottom half of a window, letting in lots of light while maintaining privacy. Tier-on-tier shutters have independent top and bottom panels for flexible control.
Q
Q
Real wood can warp
with too much moisture, so UPVC
shutters are the perfect choice for
bathrooms.

Where can I store and share photos online? Facebook and Instagram are the most popular, but there are other alternatives, each offering different features in terms of security, photo editing and the size of photos that you can share.
Will I have to pay for storage?
Most sites offer some free space but then do charge a monthly fee if you need more space. Some of the most generous free accounts are Flickr with 1TB of storage for individual photos up to 200MB and Google Photos, which offers unlimited storage for photos of up to 16MP. If you subscribe to Amazon Prime you’ll get free unlimited storage with Prime Photos, with no limit on the size of individual files
Does size really matter? Yes!
When you upload a picture to Facebook or Instagram, the image is compressed, so that there is less data for the site to store. This does reduce its quality, so if you re-download and the print the photo it will look pixelated. On Facebook you can increase the resolution of saved pictures by creating a new album and ticking the ‘high quality’ box, but you will still unfortunately lose some of the detail. Google photos also compresses files, up to 16MP (still large enough to print to 24x16inch photos), unless you alter the settings to save them as ‘original quality’.
Who will be able to see my photos?
On many of the sites, including Flickr, SmugMug and Instagram, any photos you upload are public. This means that anyone can see them. They may show up
28
in a Google search. If you would rather they were only available for ‘specific’ people, then you can go into settings and change the album or whole account to ‘private’ before you start uploading. For connected accounts for example you have set up your Instagram photos to automatically load to Facebook - you will need to make them both private.
How can family & friends access private pictures?
They can sign up for an account for the same site and you can give them access to your photos. With sites such as Flickr and Amazon’s Prime Photos, you can share individual photos and albums by sending out a link in an email. Prime Photos also has a feature called Family Vault which lets you share.

COLD FILL Most machines are now cold fill only: It's more energy-efficient, and energy ratings are determined on cold fill only It's more economical for you to heat the small amount of water up inside the washing machine than to run off the hot water system in your home Gentler on fabrics
Cold water fill means that you can effectively use biological washing powder on low temperatures, and is better for stain removal There are a few hot and cold fill machines around - useful if you receive free hot water from solar panels.

SPIN SPEEDS Most machines have a minimum of two spin speeds: 1000 - 1800 rpm: a higher speed for cottons 400 - 800 rpm: a lower speed for synthetics & delicates Top-of-the-range machines will have a long spin cycle for cottons for more efficient water extraction, and an interval spin for synthetics to reduce creasing. All machines will try to balance a laundry load before the main spin cycle begins, and if it can't achieve even distribution, it will automatically select a slower spin speed for safety.
E: pdfencing72@gmail.com put in enough washing liquid to last for 20 washes and the programme will auto dose according to what the load needs Reload function on a machine allows you to add odd items to the wash once the cycle has started Steam programmes allow you to refresh creased dry clothes or remove odours without doing a full wash Smart machines enable you to control washing cycles via an app on your smartphone Look for the Quietmark symbol for appliances with lower decibel levels
ENERGY RATINGS All machines will have an energy efficiency and a performance grading A - G, with A being the most economical. Most machines now incorporate a pressure switch mechanism and automatically use the correct amount of water for the load; others will have a half load facility for small quantities of laundry. Top-of-the-range machines use advanced electronic technology to monitor conditions during the wash and make any adjustments required to get optimum cleaning performance using minimum water and energy; it can influence the main wash, water intake, temperature settings, wash time, rinse performance and spin speed.
The Bosch WAN24000GB has an EcoSilence Drive, extremely energy-efficient and quiet in operation. It also features VarioPerfect which takes 65% less time or uses 50% less energy – delivers total flexibility. £329.99 www.trafalgarelectronics.co.uk

HEALTH & LEISURE
There are many forms of complementary and alternative therapies. A complementary therapy means you can use it alongside your conventional medical treatment. Alternative therapy is generally used
Ayurveda Continues to be one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body health systems. More than a system for treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life. The two main guiding principles are 1) the mind and the body are inextricably connected, and 2) nothing has more power to heal and transform the body than the mind. Freedom from illness depends on expanding our own awareness, bringing it into balance, and then extending that balance to the body. Meditation is just one of the most powerful tools the ancient Ayurvedic physicians prescribed for balancing the body and mind. Oil massage is consistently used throughout Ayurvedic massage treatments. Its calm approach means that recipients are not only induced into a relaxed state during the massage, they also often report an improvement in their sleep patterns and general sense of wellbeing. In an ideal world, Ayurvedic massage would be carried out daily to help keep at bay the effects that everyday stresses and strains can have on our minds and bodies. www.chopra.com www.ayurveda.com
