perfect painterly

floral... Why we love them

You know the feeling you get when you’re given a bunch of flowers for no reason. You feel instantly uplifted! Then, think of floral wallpaper as the decorating equivalent. It’s elegant brushstroke effects will give your space, whatever the room, an artistic edge, while keeping a relaxed, romantic feel.

Where to use them

Whether it’s a bedroom or a dining room, florals will work in any room, so figuring out where to use them all comes down to the size of the print. It needs to be right for the size and use of the room. Small spaces or cluttered areas are better suited to less busy patterns that have a good amount of plain background. Floral-backed designs and bolder motifs are best on large expanses of wall and in open-plan spaces.

How to use them

Add splashes of gorgeous flowers... Wisteria Blossom Floral Wallpaper in cream, teal & red - from £7 a roll www.hendersoninteriors.co.uk

Sancerre in Blue Linen from £14.99 a roll Crown range at The Range

4

Make your pattern the star of your scheme, whether it’s on a feature wall, statement rug or upholstered furniture. For a more subtle effect on your walls, use a floral wallpaper below a dado rail and paint above it in a plain complimentary colour.

How to accessorise them

Team a striking floral with a block colour to balance the print. Choose one or two shades from the pattern and use these as a base for curtains or cushions. Lastly, arrange fresh flowers in chunky ceramics to add life and texture to the look.

‘Painterly floral prints can be really loud and punchy or quiet and unassuming, so there’s a look to suit every taste’

On trend Stainless steel

Stylish, hygienic and hard wearing stainless steel is the chef’s choice for kitchen units and worktops, but it’s becoming an increasingly popular choice in homes too. An entire kitchen in stainless steel can feel a little overwhelming, so adopting a mix and match approach is a safer option. Many customers like the fact that they can mix steel with other components to create their own design. Expect to pay around the same amount for stainless steel worktops as you would for granite or Corian designs. For a more affordable option, team wooden worktops with steel units.

clean your showerhead

By immersing it in a basin or bowl of vinegar, making sure the nozzles are covered in liquid. If your shower head isn’t removable, secure a plastic bag filled with vinegar to it using a rubber band. Leave it steeping in vinegar for several hours, ideally overnight. Remove the bag and give the showerhead a scrub with an old toothbrush and cleaning solution to remove any lime scale. Re-attach the showerhead and turn the shower on for several minutes to let the smell dissipate.

Open an iTunes account

How to put music on your smart phone... Take your favourite songs with you wherever you go here’s how to make the most of your digital music collection...

With 43 million songs available to buy, Apple’s iTunes is the world’s most popular music app. available for Apple iOS and Windows, it’s also one of the best platforms for transferring your CD collection to digital files to enjoy on a smartphone or tablet. Opening an account is free; access to Apple Music streaming services costs £9.99 per month.

Transfer files from your computer using a USB cable IPHONE Open iTunes and select the music you want to copy. Plug your handset into the computer with the USB lead, click on the iPhone symbol, then select music. A window will open allowing you to sync your chosen tracks. ANDROID The process is slightly different. Plug your phone into the computer, then find the music folder on your phone. Next, open a separate explorer window on your PC to browse the music files, then drag and drop songs direct to your handset’s music folder.

Use any phone with Windows 10

Move your music from iTunes to Android ITUNES isn’t available on android phones, but you can still transfer your iTunes music files to an android handset. CHECK you’ve got sufficient storage space on your phone. PLUG your phone into a computer – you may get an on-screen prompt to put your handset into media transfer Protocol (MTP) mode first. OPEN a file explorer window and locate your Android phones music folder. Then open a separate file explorer window and find your iTunes music library. Don’t open iTunes itself – you need the actual file for this. DRAG AND DROP the songs that you want to transfer into your phones music folder.

16

PC people running Windows 10 can now enjoy all their files, including music, on any handset, including iPhone and Android (and Windows). You’ll need to do three things:

Download the free Microsoft Phone Companion app to your PC; add OneDrive cloud storage and Groove Music apps to your portable device, then register a new account. Regardless of the operating system that you’re using, you’ll find everything ready to go wherever you are.

Subscribe to a streaming service Online music services, such as Spotify provide instant access to millions of songs, albums, playlists and radio stations – plus, you can load all your MP3 and iTunes music files into your account, meaning your music library is in one convenient place.

The top music streaming apps SPOTIFY PREMIUM £9.99 per month for iOS, Android and Windows It’s not just the 30 million tracks that make this service so popular. You can listen offline, create, search and share playlists, and it has ‘Discover weekly’, which suggests new songs based on your tastes. APPLE MUSIC £9.99 per month for iOS, Android and Windows A hugely impressive app that combines all your music, a vast streaming service and unique worldwide radio station. Great value for groups, too – a family of six can subscribe using one account for £14.99 a month. SOUNDCLOUD free for iOS, Android and Windows You can pay £9.99 per month for SoundCloud Go. But the free service remains impressive despite the ads, with a vast searchable library online and a huge collection of DJ mixes too.

battle of the HOBS Gas hobs have been popular with cooks for an age for their responsiveness. Induction hobs are becoming just as popular. Here we give you some information to help you decide which is best for you.

facts & benefits Induction  Great for speed.  Lots of practical features such as pause, boost, combine zones.  Little to no residual heat so it’s easy to clean and is safer to use.  It’s a bit of a pain if you have a collection of pans that are unsuitable for induction.  Fairly expensive at a starting price from £200

TOP TIP With glass topped hobs wipe up spills as they happen. Sugar can crystallise on a hot hob and damage it! Belling Ceramic Hob CH60TX £169.99 shop local at www.trafalgarelectronics.co.uk

Gas  Really responsive and easy to control.  Affordable with starting prices of £80 upwards for a four burner hob.  Needs proper installation by a Gas Safe Engineer.  A bit time consuming and more fiddly to clean.

Ceramic  Inexpensive option if a gas supply isn’t available and prices start at upwards of £120.  Suitable for all pan types.  The heat is retained in the glass so not as responsive to temperature adjustments; also means spills can get horribly burnt on.

20

hob do’s and don’ts DO: Wipe a hob over after every use, don’t forget the knobs, while dirt and grease is still fresh it’s easier to remove.

DO: Use a special hob cleaner to remove light

soiling (check manufacturers recommendations first). Stubborn stains and burnt-in deposits should be removed with a hob scraper which will not damage the glass. If you have a gas hob, some pan supports and spillage wells are dishwasher-safe. Alternatively use a cream cleaner and a damp cloth.

DON’T: Never, ever drag pans across a glass

hob. Always lift pans and check that their bases are clean and dry, the tiniest piece of grit under the base can cause great damage.

phones I bet you’ve got a few mobile phones laying in a kitchen drawer? Keep one as a spare in case of emergency and sell the rest (or part exchange). If your phones are in a fair condition, with their original battery and under three years old then you should sell them easily online. Try some comparison sites www.sellmymobile.com and www.phones4cash.co.uk to check for the best price. It pays to shop around, as the price varies quite a bit.

oven cleaning

We suggest you use a professional for a cooker that looks like new, such as Coventry Cooker Clean 024 7644 7628. If you decide to try it yourself, place a heat resistant bowl of water in the oven and heat on high temperature for about 20minutes to loosen grime, then use a specialised oven cleaner, such as Oven & Cookware Cleaner from Lakeland at £1.99. Put racks in your dishwasher if they fit, or soak in a biological washing detergent in your bath.

garden tools/mowers Really you should clean a lawnmower after each use, but it definitely needs doing before you put it away for the winter months. Wear heavy duty gloves and brush the grass from the vents with a soft brush and thick cloth. Use a plastic spatula to clean the undercarriage. Don’t use water or polish on the machine. Unplug or disconnect the spark plug and turn the mower on its side (if the manual allows for this). Check for cracks and damage. Let petrol mowers run dry before storing. Use a wire brush to brush off any hardened mud, dirt or rust from garden tools. Wipe with an oily rag before putting into storage.

patio Scrub decking and paving with a stiff nylon brush (don’t use one with metal bristles) and a good patio cleaner. For hard to remove stains of if you don’t have much time, use a pressure washer. Clean patio furniture before you pop it in to storage or cover in for winter. Tackle cracks in paving. Winter’s freeze and thaw cycles can turn tiny cracks into gigantic crevices. A local builder could help if you can’t do it yourself.

summer clothes Always store clothes in plastic boxes. Wood, cardboard and paper can damage fabrics. Natural fibres like silk still need to be able to breathe. Always wash and dry clothes thoroughly Before storing. Place moth repellent crystals or lavender sachets in between the layers. sparkling windows Give your windows a thorough clean every season. Remove any blinds or curtains then clean around the sill and frame. If you have patches of mildew and mould, HG Mould Remover from Lakeland at £5.99 works a treat. Window vacs are the ‘new thing’, do your research and check that it has enough recharge power. It should leave your glass and tiles streak-free. If you are doing it by hand, avoid a sunny day or the glass will dry too quickly and be streaky!

When it comes down to a quick spot-clean or difficult to reach areas, a powerful hand held vac is ideal. Try the Dyson DC58 (from £229.99). It’s great for anything from crumbs to pet hair, it has great suction and should even retrieve debris from the grooves of hardwood flooring. How’s that for power!

Thought your electric toothbrush was cutting edge? Prepare to have your jaw dropped.

athrooms used to be simple spaces – some tiles here, a loo there – but then they got geeky. Futurists reckon by 2040 , they’ll be filled with robots giving manicures and mirrors that perform health checks, but there’s plenty to be excited about right now, from taps that shut off when the bath is full, to shower head speakers.

steam and water proof TVs let you wash and watch at same time. Most sets have full HD screen, Freeview channel’s and a splash proof remote, while some are smart or include a port for google Chromecast or Amazon Fire Stick, so you can access BBC iPlayer, Netflix and much, much more. Position the TV so you can lie back and watch it in comfort – you could fix it to the wall bracket or build it into a cabinet door, so you can adjust the screen angle. Worried about how a TV might look? Aquatec and techvision sell mirrors with water proof TV screens embedded in to them that disappear when you switch them off. thanks to music streaming technologies, the simple shower radio has some serious competition. Take the hi – tech mirrors with built in Bluetooth speakers, or Panasonic’s ALLO5 speaker that forms part of its wi-fi multi room music system. The rain brain shower from Hansgrohe will also play music via Bluetooth, while Kohler and Mira showers have shower heads that double as speakers.

Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer, skimming away any scum that comes to the surface. Cook the lentils gently for 20-25 minutes until soft and tender. Meanwhile, pre-heat the grill to hot and grill the sausages and bacon in separate batches; the sausages will need 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally. The bacon will need 5-7 minutes, turning once. Once all the sausages and rashers of bacon are grilled, cut the sausages into slices and dice the bacon. Add to the lentils and warm through for 5 minutes. WEDDINGS

E L D N A H HOW TO

‘difficult’ parents and in-laws

Chances are your parents have probably been thinking about your wedding day as long, if not longer, than you have, and they most likely have expectations that they may never have verbalised to you. In the lead-up to your wedding day, communication is key, as your families will be your support system during your planning, whether financially, emotionally or both. If your parents give you some money towards the wedding, get them to clarify what it means. Is it a gift? Is it a loan? Does it have any strings attached? Communication is key at this stage. Enter any discussion with his or your parents united on your opinion. If you are divided from the start, this can give your parents the opportunity to pit you against each other. Don’t let this happen! Sit down with your respective families and make sure you and your fiancée are in a very good state of mind. If one of you isn’t ready for the discussion, it could go very wrong. Focus on getting a positive outcome from the

discussion. You get more of what you focus on so make sure you know how you want the discussion to go in a positive way.

Be willing to compromise but not to the point that you forfeit your wedding dream. It is your wedding; they have had their turn!

Stop thinking about what your family is going to say and trying to mind read them. Give them a chance to talk so that they feel respected.

Give your parents designated roles in your wedding planning. They will feel involved and you can control their involvement.

Listen! They will tell you exactly how they feel but if you’re talking over them or thinking about the next clever thing you are going to say, you won’t hear them. Smile. It will soften the whole conversation and allow you to say difficult things without being offensive. This is not the time to alienate your family.

If the situation becomes difficult SBS… Stop, breathe, solve. This works every time. And finally, if your family really wants something to happen at your wedding that you don’t agree with, tell them that you will think about it and get back to them. This will prevent a confrontation and give you and them time to reconsider.

Your wedding is about love, joy, commitment, closeness, friendship, fun, families coming together and so much more, so keep these thoughts in focus so that you achieve them! 54

t a h t s h t y sleep m e k a m y ll a actu you tired

If you’re among the one in three who has trouble sleeping, we can set a few things straight about the myths that could be making things worse.

IF YOU HAVE INSOMNIA, GO TO SLEEP EARLIER Truth: Insomnia affects a third of us, with worry and stress keeping most of us awake at night. A classic mistake though, is to go to bed earlier. Solution: Build up your “sleep pressure”, which is about being active enough to make yourself truly tired. The less you care about sleep, the more likely it is to happen. If you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep, start to think about it as a good thing, time to chill our in your warm bed and relax. Eating foods during the day that increase your levels of sleep neurotransmitters is also worth trying. These include: wholegrain breads, fruit (especially bananas and cherries) and protein-rich foods including salmon, herring, beef, pork and turkey.

CATCHING UP AT THE WEEKEND IS FINE Truth: A weekend lie-in may seem like a tempting antidote to a week of late nights, but research found that those who were sleep-deprived had impaired concentration even after their “recovery sleep” at the weekend. Weekend lie-ins disrupt our body clocks, making it harder to sleep at night during the week. Solution: If you miss some sleep one night, you can catch up the next night with little problem. But two or more nights can’t be remedied by a weekend lie-in. instead, waking up at the same time everyday, even at the weekend, will train your body to use the time it has to get the best nights sleep.

EXERCISE CLOSE TO BEDTIME KEEPS YOU AWAKE

SKIPPING AN HOURS SLEEP CAN’T HURT YOU

Truth: In fact, even vigorous exercise before bedtime doesn't cause sleep problems for many people and, according to recent research by The Sleep Council, it might even be beneficial. Solution: As long as you wind down, exercise shouldn't affect your sleep. This could be anything that relaxes you, such as a hot bath or a few yoga moves. Try the Child’s Pose, where you kneel down and rest your chest on your thighs and your head on the floor, followed by Legs Up the Wall and Corpse Pose. Hold each one for one to five minutes accompanied by deep, slow breathing - it’s the ultimate pre-bed relaxation routine.

Truth: An experiment by TV medic Dr Mosley found that those on an hour’s less sleep struggled with mental agility tests the next day. After a week, processes associated with immune response and stress became much more active. Solution: It’s easy to find your bedtime edges ever later when watching TV and spending time on your iPad. Electronic devices emit blue light waves, which signal to the brain it’s still daytime. The answer is to impose an “electronic sundown” of 60 minutes in which you switch off phones, tablets etc. before bed and keep your pre-bed light exposure to a minimum.

SOME PEOPLE ONLY NEED A may be too. Researchers at the University of California, FEW HOURS Truth: True, people like Margaret Thatcher, Ghandi and Winston Churchill famously thrived on less sleep, but they’re a rarity. Most of us need seven to eight hours. How do the brief-sleep people manage? Well, sleep is like height. It’s genetically determined. So if your mum or dad were short sleepers, you

discovered a gene mutation in some people that predisposed them to needing about 20 per cent less sleep than the rest of us. But they only account for around 5 per cent of the population. Solution: Recognise the signs you’re not getting enough sleep. Cravings for sweets,

caffeine and carbohydrates, wanting to go back to sleep as soon as you wake up and thinking about sleep during the day are all giveaways. Conversely, if you wake up without an alarm clock at the same time everyday - whether for work, at the weekend or on holiday - with only 4-5 hours’ sleep, you could be among the lucky few genuine “short sleepers”.
