Garden indoors Turn a trolley into a moveable display by popping plants on the shelves. Mix pots with glass for interest.

Three isn’t a crowd Hang a cluster of mirrors as a change from artwork. Odd numbers tend to work best. Try staggering the heights but don’t place them too far apart. Fawkner Hexagonal Copper Tone Mirror, set of 3 £85.97 www.houseofisabella.co.uk

Find a use for your old tin can Contrast kitchen surfaces Mix different finishes to create a fab effect. Pair country style panelled kitchen doors with marble work tops and splashbacks.

Glowing Garden Hang Firefly solar light bulbs from branches. They are individual hanging bulbs so there are no untidy wires to try and hide. ÂŁ1 Poundland

Double up your curtains

Give your windows a nice summery update. Draw winter curtains to the side and add a pair of lightweight panels on the inner edges. Attract butterflies Grow wildflowers that they will love. Sprinkle some seedballs (ÂŁ5.99 per tin, Seedball) containing clay, compost and seed, onto flower beds and wait for the butterflies to come.

Instead of throwing your tins in the recycling, make a rustic table centrepiece using an assortment of empty cans to hold posies of flowers picked from your own garden if you can.

r u o l o c in your life

How to make colour work… and where?

Which colours work best? Colour can energise; warm colours such as red, orange and yellow scientifically have a long visual wavelength, so the effect can be like drawing the walls in to us, creating a cosy, energetic environment. In a busy kitchen, this might be counteractive to the mood you want, so cooler ‘sea and sky’ colours such as blues and violets can calm things down. These are best used for spaces where you want to unwind.

How do you choose a complimentary colour palette? Choose a favourite colour and then look to the left and right of it on a colour wheel and use these three colours as your starting palette. They will feel familiar but not the same, creating a subtle effect. For on-trend vibrancy, look at the opposite colour on the wheel and play with that as an accent.

Clever tricks! There are some great clever tricks (and I don’t mean sponge painting from the eighties). Achieve a painterly mist effect by using a dry brush technique, where you paint the whole wall in one colour, then, once it’s dry, paint a 50cm deep band of a complementary colour above the skirting board. Then, using a cheap emulsion brush (3-inch should do the trick), scrub small amounts of paint up the wall. Keep the brush almost dry to get a dreamy powdery finish that draws attention to, but doesn’t dominate space.

Ceiling idea

White ceilings are okay if they are low and it’s historically appropriate, it’s the biggest area of free decorating space and a wasted opportunity not to use the ceiling as part of the scheme. Use a pale version of the colour on the walls, it makes the room far more interesting and pulls everything together.

How else can you add colour?

Paint a chair or other piece of furniture that can be thrown away or recycled if you don’t like it. Paint a frame or the recess of a window a favourite colour or add a tint sliver on the edge of a cushion. These are all ways to add colour to your room. Dynamic artwork, big vases of fresh flowers, a pretty patterned rug and collections of beautiful ceramics also help to build on a colour theme in a room.

A large roof window is the perfect way to brighten a small space.

What is a roof window? According to British standards, roof windows must be installed in the same orientation and ‘in plane’ with the surrounding roof, weathered into the roof using a skirt or flashing. Think Velux.

Are there other options?

COFFEE. Do you see it as an experience rather than a morning ‘necessary’? If so, then you need a bean-to-cup machine in your life. Fully automatic models are great as you can experiment, tweaking strength and milkiness until you discover your favourite drink. What can you make?

The simplest machines make a jug of filter coffee, while the most complicated serve up loads of espresso-based drinks, from Americanos to ristrettos to luxury cappuccinos to milky lattes.

FILTER COFFEE: Swan’s machine SK32020N £99 It makes up to 10 cups of coffee and you can pick your preferred strength, setting the timer to start brewing for your morning cup. GREAT VALUE: Krups has great automatic machines for under £500. They will remember your mixes and let you know if anything needs cleaning. You do have to froth your own milk.

OLIVIA’s Coffee House Local, hand roasted coffee, fresh cakes, quiches, paninis, sandwiches & much more!

2 3

Can you tailor your coffee?

The majority of models let you select the strength of your coffee, as well as fine-tune every element - size, froth level and temperature of the milk and water.

Why buy a bean-to-cup?

This fab machine will grind your coffee beans fresh to order, then force water through the grounds at high pressure, so that they don’t lose flavour or aroma. This makes for a rich drink with a thick ‘crema’ on the top.

4

What about cleaning?

For a perfect cup every time, keep your machine clean and de-scale it every few months. Choose a model that automatically rinses milk pipework and also has dishwasher-safe parts.

5 6

Will it froth the milk?

More basic models have a frothing wand that emits steam to heat the milk. Top of the range designs will do it for you.

Any other features?

Twin spouts let you make two coffees at the same time, while a large water tank won’t need filling up as often. A dual-boiler machine has separate heating for milk and Espresso, it can do both jobs at the same time.
