sumptuous

For the past few years, the trend for dark-toned decorating has been a bit on the 50 shades of grey theme! There are so many gorgeous ways to get a glamourous and richly dark interior. To create an intimate or dramatic atmosphere, paint the walls and skirting boards in the same rich hue. Deep aubergine walls paired with pale furniture can really create a statement.

DULUX FEATURE WALL MULBERRY BURST MATT EMULSION PAINT 1.25L ÂŁ13.83 Opt for a matte finish as the walls will absorb light instead of bouncing it around the room. Always use good quality brushes and rollers, as dark, flat finishes can accentuate brush strokes. Scuffs can show up more easily on dark paint, so make sure you use a durable finish that can easily be wiped clean.

a little bit of...

H Y G G E

Dark nights and cold frosts… it’s time to embrace the Danish art of cosy living.

Let’s bring Scandi wellbeing into our lives if you haven’t already. Fairy lights, log fires and snug rugs are hygge (pronounced hue-guh). Hot, bubbly baths surrounded by tea lights, fluffy jumpers and knitted socks are definitely hygge. Family games evenings and home made cakes are hygge too. Candles deserve a big mention too, the Danes get through more candles than any other European country. Danish interiors are designed with cocooning in mind, open plan living with cosy corners, sort lighting, piles of throws, cushions and rustic furniture made of natural materials. Hygge is much more than just a fashionable fad, it’s about cherishing yourself and your relationships, and making everyday nicer. Perhaps the most welcome aspect of hygge is that it can

be achieved on a small budget. There is nothing fancy or expensive about a pair of woolly socks. It is all about choosing rustic over new, simple over extravagant and mood over excitement. You cannot hygge if you are rushing or stressed and the art of creating intimacy cannot be bought by anything but time, interest and engagement with the people that are around you.

The cutting edge knives that every cook needs

There are so many knives to choose from that it can be a bit of a minefield. Here’s a little insight to some of the key knives and what they are all about...

Paring knife Superb for when fine detail is needed. This is effectively a smaller version of a chef’s knife and is perfect for those jobs such as trimming, peeling or chopping finely. Steel can be prone to rust if you don’t look after them properly. Ceramic knives don’t have to be sharpened very often but they can chip easily; steel is definitely more robust. Wusthof Silverpoint 8cm Paring Knife £8.95 www.abraxascookshop.com

CHEFS knife This is probably the most versatile knife of all so surely the most important? A 6-10 inch blade is optimum and it can be used for fruit and vegetables (just chopping, not peeling), fish, meat (although not for butchery or fileting). If you usually cook a lot of meat, an 8 inch blade or longer will be best. The quality of the steel is important as is the balance and weight of the blade. Sharpen your knife little and often - just a few minutes a week with a Japanese whetstone. Don’t put this knife in the drawer with other cutlery as it can ruin the blade. An important thing about a good chef’s knife is that it needs to feel natural in your hand, Forged Chef’s Knife £30 it needs www.victorinox.com to fit.

Boning/filLeting knife A boning knife is for cutting around the bones and through cartilage as well as removing layers of fat from meat. It has a thin blade that is usually about 5 inches long and has an extra sharp point. Flexible blades are best for poultry and fish, while a stiff blade is best for working with thicker meats like beef and pork. Filleting knives serve a similar purpose but have a more curved blade and are more flexible. Filleting knives can be sharpened like a razor. Carbon steel knives are no longer popular or widely available and they can sometimes taint the food if not kept super clean. I.O.Shen Boning/Filleting Knife £79.95 www.kitchenknives.co.uk

14

vegetable knife This is a small version of a serrated knife and key for peeling fruit or thinly slicing tomatoes. Sometimes with a plastic handle they are hardly the most beautiful of knives but it is incredible useful for cutting easily through the skin of a tomato, sawing through a chicken bone or even slicing a muffin in half. These knives can be sharpened so it’s worth buying a more budget friendly version. UHN Rikon Serrated Tomato Knife & Sheath £5 www.lakeland.co.uk

Choose your look Your fabric choice depends on a number of factors. Firstly, think about the space and the look you want to achieve. Does your room look out onto the road? If so, you might want to retain your privacy, but not restrict light or your view, so a sheer fabric or voile would work well. For a bedroom, a black-out blind will offer a good night’s sleep and for kitchens and bathrooms, a moisture-resistant, wipe-able fabric is a practical option. Other aspects to consider are patterns and textures - this is the part where you can get really creative. A strong punch of colour and design transforms a subtle scheme. Or, for a luxurious touch, choose a plain, textured fabric and frame it with curtains in a rich and complementary colour.

Tip: Take time to measure yo ur space accurate ly - it’s key to a good fit

Beautifully bold, the Passaro Pewter roller blind brings great joy to all that see it with a fun and quirky design with a striking colour palette.

Measuring up Begin by choosing whether you want to hang your blind inside or outside your window frame. If you want a neat, tailored look, then inside the recess is best, although you’ll need to make sure that the space is deep enough for the blind and mechanism to fit in the gap. Choose to fit your blind outside the recess if you want your window to look larger, it isn't quite square or the inside space is too shallow too accommodate the pole.

EP T -S Y B P E T S Follow our guide to installing your roller blind and giving your windows a new look. You will need:  Your roller blind kit, which includes the blind, brackets, wall plugs and screws  Step ladder  Metal tape measure (fabric types can stretch)  Metal ruler Method: Measure inside or outside your window recess, depending on which way you want to hang your blind. Take into account which side you would like the mechanism, so it is easily accessible. If you’re fitting your blind inside the recess, take at least three measurements for the width and drop, as not all windows are straight. Use the narrowest for the width and the shortest for the drop.

tips...

Pipes & Drains Lots of plumbing troubles can be avoided…

1

Oil & Grease

One of the most common causes of blocked kitchen sinks is pouring cooking oil or fat down the plug hole. Instead, tip it into a container and take it to the waste recycling centre.

2

Stop Tap

Make sure you know where your stop tap is. If you suffer a leak anywhere you can turn it off to prevent further damage to your home and belongings.

Hair Traps

Human hair is a major cause of blocked drains. Place hair traps over the plug holes in your bath and shower to help avoid this problem. You can buy them from DIY and homeware shops.

3

4

Insulate taps and pipes

Insulate any outdoor water pipes and taps, including those in your garage. This will help them from freezing and bursting during Winter. You can buy a lagging kit from your local DIY shop.

22

Avoiding Pests Handy advice to keep unwanted house guests at bay.

Keep out rodents

Look for holes, nooks and crannies around the outside of your home - and not just at ground level, Make sure you seal off any places where rodents can get in or nest.

Avoid wasps in the loft Inspect your loft for holes, where wasps could get in,

Central heating Keep your heating system in tip-top condition. Just follow these tips to help you to maintain your central heating system.

1

Annual boiler service

Help to protect your central heating system by having your boiler serviced every year. Not only will the engineer check that the parts are working properly, they will also clean out the boiler to help to make sure it is running as efficiently as possible.

2

Bleed your radiators

If a radiator is warm at the bottom and cool at the top, it may need bleeding. Call in the experts.

3

Restart your boiler

If your boiler doesn’t come on when it should, check the pilot light through the viewing hole (if you have a pilot light that is). If it has gone out, try pressing the

and seal them off. Cover air bricks and vents with insect mesh or apply some eucalyptus oil/menthol to the area. If you find an infestation don’t try and deal with them on your own… call the specialists.

TOP TIP Ants are drawn to food, particularly sugar. Don’t leave food out, wipe spills up straight away and keep the bins clean, they’ll be less likely to come inside.

reset button. If it still won’t restart, or if you don’t have a pilot light, check the manual.

4

No manual

If you don’t have a manual for your boiler, check the manufacturer’s website or visit www.freeboilermanuals.com where manuals for a whole range of makes and models can be found.

TOP TIP An A-rated high-efficiency boiler converts more burnt fuel into useable energy, than an older boiler. If you want to save energy, consider upgrading your system.

Impressive fakes 6ft Crystal Pine Cone Christmas Tree £99 M&S

The real thing Always buy from a reputable store like Smiths Nurseries opposite. You could also contact the British Christmas Tree Growers Association for independent growers in your area. Be prepared to nurture your real tree once it’s indoors; it will need regular watering, whether it’s in a holder or has roots and is potted. If you have to position it next to a radiator, turn that radiator off or down as far as possible as overheating will make the needles drop. A real Norway Spruce is the one to go for if you like a proper pine scent throughout the house, but it can drop.

Fantastic fakes High quality fake trees are an investment buy, it’s easy to spend more than £100 on a perfect, fake snow decorated tree, but there is no doubt that they are easy to deal with. Always buy pre-lit (with the lights already attached) to avoid any Christmas light stress. There are lots of trees around in high street stores (visit Rugby Electrical in Rugby town for a great range) and it’s a fun idea to splash out on trees for the children’s rooms and even one for the kitchen too. TIP - keep the box so that you can store it dust free for next year,

Where to put the tree Check the height (including tree topper). Trim from the bottom upwards and then tidy up the top section. If space allows, a full-height tree always looks lovely in the entrance hallway or in a living room window.

plants

Inject some new life into your home with some gorgeous house plants... Ther e are a number of plants that have been found to be particularly effective in cleansing the air of pollutants,

thes e include: aloe vera, Boston Fern. Weeping fig, peace lily, snake plant and spider plant. Healthy

houseplants love a well-lit, draught-free spot with a consistant tempera ture and reasonably high humidity.

choose your spot wisely…match your plants to their location sunny positions Try:

Glass magnifies the sun’s rays, so placing a plant on a windowsill may cause the sap to overheat and damage the plant’s cells.

Rose Mallow a tropical flowering shrub. Variegated snake plant which has sword like leaves that can grow to one metre high. Fig Amstel King with its large leaves which have a lovely red tint on new growth.

shady positions

best for bathrooms Try:

Bathrooms can be steamy one minute and cool and dry the next, so plants need to be able to cope with quick and regular changes in temperature.

Zebra plant with its dramatic foliage and beautiful bright yellow flowers. Maidenhair fern has lovely arching black fronds with triangular leaves. Ming aralia resembles a miniature Japanese maple and thrives well with moisture and warmth.

Plants with darker leaves have more chlorophyll and can tolerate shady conditions. Shady, draughty conditions normally occur in down stairs toilets and hallways so choose carefully for these areas.

Try: Campanula with its masses of violet-blue flowers from summer to autumn. Calathea has bold leaf markings with striking purple undersides. Aloe vera is super hardy thriving without much need for care.

Under a blanket of ‘flor’ yeast it

produces light, crisp Manzanilla and Fino. These are bes t served from the fridge with light snacks tha t are slightly salty like olives or pretzels. Tio Pep e is a widely available Fino and one of the bes t on the market for around £10. For a more savoury and richer dry sherry, Amontillado is only par tially aged und er

Why you should make a will If you want to be sure your wishes will be met after you die, then a will is vital. Here are 6 reasons why it's important to make a will.

1. Reassurance

A will is the only way to make sure your savings and possessions (your estate) go to the people and causes that you care about.

2. Avoiding disputes between relatives

Disputes over wills can cause arguments among family members and may even need a solicitor to resolve them. Leaving a will should remove any doubt about who you want to leave your estate to. Close relatives and dependants may still be able to make a claim on your estate, but a solicitor can advise you on how likely this is and the best way to prevent it.

3. Looking after your loved ones

Although it’s hard for loved ones to talk about death, talking about your will can save everyone a lot of worry. Deciding who you want to leave your possessions to (your beneficiaries) can help you make sure they go to the people you intended.

4. Protecting your assets for future generations

A will can ensure that assets are kept within the family and are passed on down the generations.

5. Saving on Inheritance Tax

With a carefully-planned will, you can also cut the Inheritance Tax bill on your estate after

48

your death. For example, Inheritance Tax isn’t normally paid on anything you leave to a spouse or civil partner who has their permanent home in the UK. Inheritance Tax is only payable if your estate is worth more than a certain amount.

6. Your funeral

Your will can be a way to let people know whether you would prefer to be buried or cremated, and the type of funeral service and music you would like.

What if I don’t make a will?

If you don’t make a will, you will die ‘intestate’ and your estate may not go to the people you intended. In this case, there are special rules for how your estate will be distributed, called intestacy rules. Your estate means everything you own, including money, property, possessions and investments. These will only be distributed after all your debts and funeral expenses have been paid.

Who will inherit your estate if you die without a will?

If you have a spouse or civil partner and children, your spouse or civil partner will inherit all your personal possessions and at least the first £250,000 of your estate, plus half the rest. Your children will then be entitled to the other half of the balance. If you have a spouse or civil partner but don’t have children, your spouse or civil partner will inherit your whole estate. This includes your personal possessions.

how to lose 5 years… Perfect your brows! HD Brows This is a seven step eyebrow shaping treatment that includes tinting, waxing and threading, using specialist products. It is usually started by threading using a twisted cotton thread, under the brows to remove any fluff. Wax is then applied to remove stray hairs above and below. Then the shaping commences, moving the arch outwards to make smaller eyes look wider, drawing on eyebrow hairs where they are missing. This is done with a HD Pro-Pencil, the tip is much finer than anything you can buy at cosmetic counters and the strokes give a more natural look. Next, uses a medium-firm pencil to even out the colour and add thickness and definition. Finally, it’s all sealed with a clear gel.

Lip fillers... These injections are designed to give fuller, natural-looking lips using a smooth hyaluronic acid gel filler. The gel replaces volume lost due to ageing and smooths fine lines caused by a life time of pursing your lips. The objective is to achieve the most natural result. Firstly, some anaesthetic cream is smoothed over the lips and left on for around 10 minutes to numb the area. The lips are then injected. The fullness should last around 12 months.

HEALTH & LEISURE

STOP

Don’t let the sniffles take over... You can fight this!

That winter cold 1 Wash your hands

The most effective way to stay well this winter is to wash your hands regularly. People become infected by picking up the virus on their hands from contaminated objects, such as door handles, and touching their mouth/nose. Carry antibacterial gel with you in your handbag and car.

2

Take paracetamol

Try paracetamol specifically for colds and sore throats, not ibuprofen. Paracetamol works more effectively probably because the anti-inflammatory action of ibuprofen actually lessens our body’s immune response to flu.

4

Gargle

Gargling with salt water helps combat a sore throat by reducing inflammation and clearing mucus and irritants. Simply stir a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water.

5

Work out!

Regular, moderate exercise should cut down the number of colds you pick up by strengthening your immune system. In one study, those that walked for 30 minutes daily caught half the number of colds as those who don’t exercise.

56

Call in sick Don’t wait until you are so ill that your colleagues are begging you to stay at home with your germs. Bed rest will help your body to recover faster. If you really can’t take the day off, stand back from your colleagues - you are most contagious during the first few days of a cold.

6

Eat garlic

Or you could take a garlic supplement. Garlic’s active ingredient, allicin, is a powerful infection fighter. Some trials suggest

7

it works as effectively as penicillin. In a British study, garlic takers had fewer colds, took fewer sick days and recovered faster! the garlic!

It’s all about chicken soup

Chicken soup is more than a delicious lunch especially when you are ill. It also contains carnosine, a compound that helps the body’s immune system to fight the early stages of colds and flu.

8

Exhale

If you have to walk past someone who is sneezing , slowly breathe out until you’re beyond a 10ft ring around them!

9

Ahhh tissue

Cough and sneeze into a tissue, then throw it away (ideally flush it down the toilet). More than 19,000 viruses are expelled in one cough, so this is the best way to avoid spreading infection. If you don’t have a tissue to hand, use your hands and then wash them straight away.

10

Dosing up on vitamin C to get through the Winter? Think again. The most recent trials have failed to prove that taking vitamin C or vitamin D provides any protection from colds, and ginseng!

12 Sip hot, sweet tea

Green tea is definitely best as it is rich in antioxidants. But… even a mug of builder’s tea is beneficial. Inhaling the steam can help ease breathing, as can theophylline, a natural substance that opens up the airways that’s in all tea!

It’s not an old wives tail! Keeping warm can ward off colds. Shivering depresses the immune system and this makes us more likely to catch colds. Always wear a hat… we lose our body heat through our heads!

16

18

Create a personal sauna

Take a daily hot shower with the bathroom door closed tight. The steam will clear a congested nose and blocked sinuses and the heat will soothe aching limbs.

Anyone for a herbal remedy?

The little know herbal extract Pelargonium Sidoides is a natural PAUSE, antiviral that may help shorten the once duration of a cold. It’s most effective if you take it as soon as you’re ill If your cold you notice symptoms. has taken a hold, rest. Good bacteria Exercise can Eat live, natural yoghurts cause your daily to boost your body to immunity-enhancing bacteria in release stress your gut. Probiotics can shorten hormones that the length of a cold by two or so may affect days and made symptoms less healing white severe. blood cells.

15

SASS £28 Keep warm

Sleep is the best!

A study reported that adults who slept for less than 5 hours a night were four times more likely to catch a cold than those who slept for seven hours or more.

14

So cute!

Watch your supplements

17

Take zinc

But act really fast… A new review of clinical trials suggested that zinc lozenges taken every few hours could cut the length of a cold by a day or more and reduce symptoms - but the sooner you start taking it the more effective it will be.

e c n a i l l i r b l brida tips for stress free wedding planning Don't limit yourself We all love scrolling through beautiful images of wedding dresses but what we think we love might not be the best dress for us. Our number one tip for finding your perfect dress? Go to a bridal shop and try as many as you can on. Even if you have your heart set on a fitted fishtail gown, try on an A-line or princess-style frock. You never know - you may be overlooking the perfect dress and let’s face it when will you have the chance to try on such stunning dresses again… Enjoy it!

Find the perfect match If you want to make your dress unique or change your dress for the evening, accessories are an excellent way to achieve a transformed look. A belt can add a splash of colour to compliment your bridesmaid dresses or add a jacket which can then be removed for the evening reception.

Best foot forward There’s nothing worse than sore feet from new shoes especially on your wedding day. It’s a wise idea to break them in by wearing them around the house in the build up to the big day. This way you can make sure they’re comfy and can avoid blisters. All you’ll have to worry about is showing them off and dancing the night away.

Keep on top of your budget When setting your budget plan for unexpected costs. When arranging a wedding small things can cost a lot when catering for a large amount of people. The closer you get to the wedding the more money you will be paying out. Make sure a trusted person in you bridal party knows who needs to be paid on the day so you’re free to enjoy your day without worrying about dishing out cheques.

You can’t control the weather! If there is one thing we can’t control it’s the weather so make sure you have a plan for every eventuality. Visit the venue before hand and make a plan for where you want your pictures taken if it’s sunny or rainy on the day. Fingers crossed it will be sunny but this way you won’t be panicking on the day trying to find places to have your pictures taken.
