Little tricks and best buys to make your home beautiful‌ simply!
MAKE AN INDOOR TABLETOP GARDEN Set up a mini garden with indoor plants. A little tray table makes it easy to move plants near to the window light. Pick plants that share the same light and water needs.
Size up a new rug for your living space Empty floor need filling? Treat your rug as the anchor point and choose a size to fill the space and suit the scale of the room. A rug which is too small in front of a large settee might look lost and a little skimpy!
Stay in bloom all year long If your favourite flowers have a short shelf life, treat yourself to faux blooms. Buy single stems, then arrange in a vase just as you would with the real thing.
UPDATE YOUR KNOBS Give an old chest of drawers or bedside table a new lease of life with some retro knobs.
le
o create e the strong
Declutter your fridge Free the front of your fridge from novelty magnets, invites, takeaway menus and ‘stuff’ that has been cluttering it up. You will be amazed at what a difference it will make to the feel of your kitchen or utility room.
look on the bright side Put away heavy winter woollens, faux furs and blankets and swap for cushions and throws in lighter cotton and linen, fresh florals and cheery colours.
mix and match your towels Perk up a plain bathroom with a couple of new patterned towels and co-ordinate them with plain coloured budget towels.
paint one wall green Choose an uplifting colour to energise your work space. Green is said to bring calm, balance and boosts creativity. So try some office psychology and paint the wall that is facing your desk a revitalising green.
Re-cover a footstool Give a shabby footstool a new lease of life by reupholstering it. A simple shape with no buttons should be fairly easy to tackle. Use a staple gun to secure fabric under the base of the footstool.

The U-shaped kitchen is probably the most practical of kitchen layouts and can provide an additional run of potential storage or appliance space compared with a galley kitchen or L-shaped kitchen. U-shaped kitchens can work in large spaces, but even small kitchens can benefit from a U-shaped design: just be sure you have at least two metres of moving-around space between the opposite banks of units. The design concept of the ‘golden triangle’ is a natural fit with a U shape: when designing your space, keep your fridge, cooker and/or hob and sink between 120cm and 270cm away from each other. This will make for a practical, time-efficient and safe use of your space, something that is harder to achieve in longer, L-shaped or galley kitchens, for example. Ideally your U-shaped kitchen will have a window at the ‘U’ end. This makes a great spot for the sink, allowing you to look out over your garden (back or front) while you wash up without having wall units overhead.
U shaped kitchens
If you are looking for kitchen diner ideas, a U-shaped design is well worth considering. Depending on your space, it may be easy to incorporate a table and chairs at the opposite end of the U shape. Consider matching table top and worktops for a tailored look. Be guided by the size of your room and the light levels when deciding on the look, style and colour of your kitchen. In a smaller space with a central window it may pay to stick to a largely white scheme. Modern hi-gloss units will help to keep light levels up as will glazed tiles and stainless-steel surfaces. Larger kitchens may be more able to handle deep colour, dark wood finishes and even hits of pattern.
U shaped kitchen with grey tiled splashback and wood worktops In this U-shaped kitchen, a wide window is the central anchor point of the scheme, filling the space with light and showing off matt-finish units, rich wood and glazed tiles in their best light. The use of wood finishes on the floor and worktops brings a warmth and cosiness to an otherwise pale decorating scheme and adds a rustic edge.
U shaped kitchen with cherry wood cabinetry and dining table Be bold in a small space, with dark-wood kitchen units and bare white walls. If you can pare back cupboards to the minimum, you may find you have capacity for a table and chairs. This smart kitchen has a look all of its own and demonstrates a very individual approach to kitchen design, making the space feel fresh and special.
U shaped kitchen in country green with floral accents Swap wall units for open shelves on one side of a U-shaped kitchen and it will help to open up the space a little, especially next to a full-height cabinet such as oven housing. Using a contrasting wall paint will help to highlight the absence of cabinetry. Pops of red and pink on small appliances, kitchen linen and accessories enliven this predominantly green scheme.

Moving house Checklist We understand moving home can be a stressful and trying time. You’ve found a home, your offer has been accepted and you need to start your moving house checklist. With two months until you move, it is time to compare quotes and reviews and select your Conveyancing Solicitor. It is essential to get the legal side in place early on to ensure a smooth legal transaction of your property sale/purchase. It is also worth taking some time to research the facilities and amenities of your new area to help the location feel like home to you.
6 weeks before you move
It is time to start clearing out anything you don’t want to be moved to your new home. It’s always best to start by making a full checklist of all your major items so you know what you will be moving and anything that will need to be disposed

1 month before you move
You should have had a Chartered Surveyor inspect your new property and inform you of its structural condition. You will now be able to talk to your solicitor about exchanging contracts and finalising your moving date so you can appoint your selected removal company and organise parking arrangements and permits for the removals vehicle at both addresses. You should also consider the travel route to your new home and whether it is suitable for a large removals lorry. Don't forget to print out your moving checklist and stick it on your fridge!

You should be confirming all important details and contact numbers with your removal company and estate agent, schools etc. in preparation for your move. If your removal company cannot provide additional services such as un-plumbing washing machines, disassembling/ reassembling furniture and packing, it would be a good time to organise these too. On your moving day, it would be useful to have children and pets cared for at a different location if possible – familiar family and friends would be the best option, so begin to ask appropriate people to see if they are available.
1 week before you move Before moving into your new
home, and during this week you should be organising all important documents and ensure they are stored somewhere safe but accessible. Your packing should be almost finished so you’ll be ready to go on the day and your removals firm can start promptly, but make sure you have left out all items necessary for your Moving Day Survival Kit of essentials to get you through your move unscathed. 1 day before you move It’s time for a final check and walk round the property to ensure nothing will be left behind and everything is packed and ready for transit. Have a good night’s sleep,
On the day of the move On a day where emotions can run high, it is important to have a plan and know what you need to do on your final morning at the property. Be ready for when your removal company arrives so they can begin promptly and identify whether any boxes need special care or are not to be taken by them. Make sure you take the meter readings for you to give to your providers and leave the keys for the new owner. It’s now time to move to your new home.
Make sure you are happy that everything on your inventory is accounted for before your moving company leaves. But first things first – it’s time to get the kettle on; your family and removals team will appreciate it!
enjoy your experience!
After you have moved in
After months of preparation and planning, you and your family are in your new home. It is important to make sure everyone is comfortable in their new surroundings and start feeling settled in at home as soon as possible. After a Once you are in your new busy moving day, don’t try to unpack everything at once, home make up the beds and then Upon arrival at your new spend the evening relaxing home it is important to make your removal company aware with loved ones and a of any special instructions and celebratory takeaway, and congratulate yourself on that they know which room making it through the day. the boxes are headed to.

is your skin STRESSED Stress plays a role in most inflammatory skin conditions. Stress is also ageing, so it can have an impact on anyone’s skin, even if they don’t have a really obvious problem. The mind-skin connection So, how does stress affect your skin? The theory is that there are two parts to the link between the mind and skin disease. The brain connects to the skin through the cutaneous nerves. When you are under stress these nerve endings promote inflammation through your
blood vessels ad immune system. There’s a normal hormonal process too. When your brain recognises stress, it sends out hormones including cortisol and adrenaline through your system, which can trigger those skin symptoms. When we talk about how stress affects the skin, we’re not talking about everyday pressure. It’s long term stress that’s the problem - like being in an unhappy relationship. So some people will be prone to acne, eczema, psoriasis etc. We don’t know that the severity of the condition doesn't necessarily predict how much someone will be affected psychologically or how much effect it will have on their quality of life. If you do feel troubled by a skin condition, this creates a cycle whereby your stress levels are high because of your skin which in turn maintains the condition.
So tackling it is very important.
Your four-step plan towards a healthy mind and skin Treat the condition The first step to breaking the cycle is to get proper treatment for your skin. Usually, anti-inflammatory creams help to protect the skin’s barrier function, you may also need specific treatments such as antibiotics. Visit your GP, who may be able to offer treatment or he may refer you to a dermatologist. Granola with Cacao Nibs
BEST FOR A BRAIN BOOST
BEST FOR HEART HEALTH
Serves 4, 270 calories per pot Flesh of 2 large ripe avocados I ripe banana 4tbsp cacao powder 2 tbsp. maple syrup Raspberries to serve
10 servings, 314 calories per serving 2 tbsp. rapeseed oil 4tbsp maple syrup 200g oats 50g sunflower seeds 50g pumpkin seeds 100g pecan nuts, roughly chopped 50g cacao nibs 100g raisins Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas mark 2. Mix oil and syrup in a bowl and stir in the oats, seeds and nuts. Spread over two baking sheets; bake for 20 minutes. Cool; stir in cacao and raisins. Keeps in an airtight container for up to 28 days. HEALTH BENEFITS Two new studies show that cacao flavanols derived from cacao beans improve cardiovascular function by helping to stop blood vessels hardening as we age. Research also shows that oats not only lower bad cholesterol levels, but also reduce two other heart disease markers.
Pop all of the ingredients, except raspberries into a food processor and pulse to combine. Divide between 4 pots, chill for around 30 minutes and serve with raspberries. HEALTH BENEFITS Cacao beans contain phytochemicals called flavanols, believed to help keep the brain healthy and may even reverse age-related memory decline in older people.

prettiest ‘I do’ tricks Choose a foundation without SPF to avoid bounce-back from flash photography. It’s all to do with a chemical found in sun protection that reflects the light, running the risk of giving you a mask-like appearance in photos.
Use a little more blusher than usual the reason? Wearing light shades like white from head-to-toe and flash photography drains colour from your complexion.
Having an up-do? don’t forget to brush bronzer around and behind your ears, as well as the back of your neck for a seamless finish.
The secret to a flawless base is too blend, blend, blend – so you don’t see any make-up edges. Also, cup your face with both hands and press. The warmth of your hands helps your foundation and concealer melt into your complexion, and lifts and excess.
When putting on your dress get one of your maids to hold a scarf a few inches from your face and hair. That way, you won’t smudge your make-up – or worse, get anything on your dress.
Avoid ‘matchy’ colour schemes a lot of brides think their make-up shades should match their wedding palette, but don’t take this too literally. Colours that work well in dresses or flowers often don’t translate to make-up.
