The challenge of picking a window treatment can be daunting - we tend to move into new homes in a hurry, so we often panic-buy inexpensive blinds just to retain privacy. Two years down the line the same blinds are still hanging, simply because picking something new seems like far too much effort. Well, stop right there! Investing a little time and money in some stylish new blinds will be well worth the effort, we promise. See The Blind Company on page 5 for a great, local service.

Refresh the look of a room in an instant wit h a new window treatmen t - there are some stylish designs to suit every room Café Culture: If you’re looking for something different then shutters really do add the wow factor. Available in a wide range of styles, there’s a look for every room, whether modern or traditional. Café-style shutters that just cover the lower half of the

window allow more light access and provide a fantastic chic Mediterranean feel.

Match up: White blinds and walls are a common combination and a timeless one too, but matching

brighter and bolder shades together also works extremely well. A teal Roman blind and pale-blue walls will create a seamless look, you could find that a large floral or abstract pattern can actually look soft and subtle, rather than overbearing.

Oh-so simple:

Simple can be just as stunning as colour if done well. Sheer white roller blinds are bang on trend and it’s easy to see why - they suit most schemes, they’re low fuss and they let in light while simultaneously offering privacy.

Colour pop: If you’re after a splash of colour in your scheme but you’d rather keep your walls and floors neutral, then a brightly coloured Venetian blind is a great idea. Go as bright as you dare! Plus, you can roll the blinds up if you’re after just a hint of colour, or hang them low for a dramatic effect. So versatile, we love it! 4

HOME & GARDEN Painted stairs with monochrome runner: Use a black-and-white decorating scheme to emphasise the dramatic lines of a painted, curving staircase. Large-format tiles laid in diagonal chequerboard style set the scene for an upwards sweep of wood hand rails. A smart grey runner with black edging echoes the movement. One benefit of a runner is that it cuts down on some of the work - the middle section of the staircase can be left unpainted. This is a smart, gorgeous scheme

topped with a fun bright coat stand to make a fitting finishing touch.

Painted stairs with yellow feature wall: If you like to

painted stairs... Painted stairs can be a real feature in a hallway. While big design decisions are made around hallway flooring, walls, wall art and lighting, steps and staircases can often get forgotten. But they are a great untapped resource, offering the possibility to do something fabulously decorative that doesn't cost the earth.

8

Painted stairs with patterned inserts: Paint a staircase in brilliant white and then choose a mix of bright paint colours and patterned wallpapers, one for each of the risers. Try orange and blue paint teamed with floral and abstract designs in orange and blue. Apply a coat or two of hardwearing clear varnish to protect against knocks and scuff marks. Painted stairs with country panelling: Pick a contrasting colour to make a feature of your staircase. Stairs in a country cottage that feature built-in cupboards and wood panelling painted in off-white to match the walls. By contrast, balusters, hand rails and staircase skirting can be given a coat of on-trend charcoal grey. It's a combination that makes an instant stand-out feature of the staircase and a smart runner in bright red should just finishes it all off.

White Shaker-style kitchen White units are probably the biggest selling 'colour' in the kitchen market. White schemes are easiest to tweak at a later date. Try a Shakerstyle kitchen peninsula with smart cupboard storage and a handy breakfast bar. Modern artwork helps break up a pale scheme.

White kitchen with bi-fold doors A open-plan kitchen with a skylight above the workspace and double bi-fold doors across the entire back wall lets light flood in. White walls, work surfaces and floors can look ultra-cool but, if they feel too clinical, replace one or two elements with colour and texture, such as oak flooring and furniture.

White kitchen with glamorous lighting Dramatise a white kitchen with accessories, such as a crystal pendant light, for a look that punches personality. Flooring will give a scheme depth and natural-look timber and stone (whether it's real, laminate or replica vinyls or ceramics) creates a lovely warming counterpoint to shiny white cabinets.

White kitchen with Contrasting units Use textured, natural elements, such as wooden furniture and stainless-steel appliances, to stop a white kitchen becoming clinical and soulless. Different cupboard heights add to the contemporary look of this central unit, which conceals useful storage.

Layered Ceiling White kitchen with Pendant cook's table and pendants John Lewis - ÂŁ160 In this white scheme, the cook's table makes a welcome return. It perfectly suits a light scheme, as it's less heavy than a traditional island and has an unfitted feel, which keeps the look clean and current.

bette itself. If planted too shallowly it may dry out of sustenance, which is vital if the bulb is to flower well the following year .

.

, . Find the right spot for the bulb in question. Does it prefer sun or shade, moist or well-drained soil? The conditions are critical to its survival and will greatly affect performance.

Allow the foliage to remain for at least six weeks after flowering to build food reserves for the following year. Tying it in knots or chopping it off will interfere with this process. If drought conditions prevail at flowering time, keep bulbs well watered. This is when next year’s flowers are initiated inside the bulbs and drought may well have an adverse effect. Feeding with a general fertiliser at the same time will help.

Plant at the correct depth, ideally three times the depth of the bulb

Dig up and divide overcrowded bulbs immediately after flowering and replant at the correct depth in soil enriched with organic matter and a good dusting of fertiliser.

NEW

Some useful hints to creating a space that’s both beautiful and practical. fter the kitchen, the bathroom is probably the most important room in the house in terms of adding value. As we look to make the most of precious downtime, many of us are renovating our bathrooms with relaxation and pampering in mind. Installing a new bathroom is a serious undertaking and can often be tricky, requiring an array of fittings and technical skills. Careful planning from the start can prevent costly mistakes and changes down the line.

If you do plan to change the layout, then measure your bathroom carefully, noting the position of the doors, windows and any pipes. It might help to draw an outline on graph paper, or use an online design tool. Ideally you should visit a showroom, as in-house designers will have ideas to help you maximise your space. Remember, if you’re adding an extension for it, you’ll need to check whether planning permission is required.

Don’t change the layout for the sake of it. If it works well, keep it, don’t fix what isn’t broken. It’s a cheaper option, too, as moving waste and water pipes can be expensive. Replacing fittings, flooring and tiling or repainting walls are quick ways to refresh your room. If the layout isn't right, then think about small changes. Rehanging doors or fitting sliding ones, for example, will help save space.

Choose your style early on, as this will narrow down the choice of fittings and help you to choose whether you want a period or contemporary look. Hotels, particularly small boutique ones, are fabulous sources of inspiration, so scour their websites. They’ll often pack a lot into a compact space, so you’ll pick up on layout tips, too. Talk to friends and family who have

26 26

completed similar projects about what they like and dislike about their own bathrooms. You’ll get ideas and importantly, discover any problems they might have encountered along the way.

Decide on the level of service you require. Some companies offer a full solution, with everything from planning and installing to decorating and finishing touches included in the price. While it isn't the cheapest option, it can repay in terms of speed and ease of the project. Alternatively, design the space and buy fittings yourself, then ask a

plumber or builder to do the work. It will take longer to source products and you’ll need to get the layout right, but it may work out cheaper. Set your budget from the outset and make sure you’ve been specific about every element of the project to avoid any added costs later.

get organised Ideally use a local, recommended bathroom design and installation company they will ensure that the whole project goes smoothly and to time. Remember, the best price might not always result in the best service, so be prepared to invest well.

When you’re despe rate for sugar and an energy boost, chan ces are your last me al was light on protein and slow-rel ease ca rbs, so your body is sim ply asking for a qu ick fix. Then again, our cra vings are oft en emotion-based , so when you’re under stress,

4 O’CLOCK SLUMP

You’re bored and that cuppa is missing something. Emotion-related eating reinforces your brain’s ability to create cravings - the food literally gets coded in your memory as a short-term solution to any stress. So try a 15 minute craving time out. Try removing yourself from the current situation - go in another room, take a walk or phone a friend - anything to divert your brain from what’s stressing you. Cravings are chemical reactions in the brain, they can’t be maintained for long and should pass before the 15 minutes is up. Still hungry after your time out? Then you probably do need to eat, but instead of sugar-laden snacks, go for something with more to offer. Try some nuts and raisins. Snacking on nuts has been shown to reduce portion sizes at meals.

your brain is telling you to comfort yours elf and we oft en turn to food because it is associated with ma king us feel happier and safe. Wheth er the rea son is physical or emotional, there are moves you can ma ke to combat the proble m - and wh en you do need to snack, you should try healthy sw aps to help you stay aw ay from the quick fixe s.

Only 11 o’clock and soooo long till lunch! Breakfast has been and gone, someone has left some biscuits on the side at work… so where’s the harm? Of course you know that the calories from food like biscuits are empty, offering no real nutrition, just fat and sugar. They also have a rollercoaster effect on your blood sugar levels, triggering the hormone insulin to be pumped into your bloodstream. Over time, you need more insulin to level out blood sugars and your metabolism gets slower. It’s a vicious cycle - the less sensitive you are to insulin, the easier it is to gain weight.

Ask yourself… was breakfast balanced with good carbs and protein? Low-glycaemic carbs, which digest slowly, ward off hunger and stop the spikes in blood sugars. Ditch the white bread, sugary processed cereals and muffins for wholegrain cereals, muesli, porridge and granola. Go for grainy and seeded breads for long-lasting energy. Proteins such as eggs, yogurt, smoked salmon, lean bacon and turkey bacon are all great for boosting satiety the feeling of fullness.

BE SNACK SAVVY If you know you’re going to be on the go all morning or need to have a late lunch, plan ahead and have a tasty energising snack such as 2tsp houmous and half a pitta or 8 or so almonds.

WEDDINGS

5 wedding dress shopping mistakes to avoid

1

Starting your search with a narrow mind

Chances are, you've always known the style of wedding dress you want to wear on your big day, ever since you were a little girl. But what if you can't find it - or if it doesn't live up to your expectations when you do? Keep an open mind when it comes to browsing for your dress: you might be totally surprised by what you fall in love with once you start looking through those hangers.

2

Not knowing your budget

Knowing - and sticking to - your wedding budget is crucial when it comes to shopping for the dress. If you start with an unrealistic expectation, you might have your heart broken. There's nothing worse than falling in love with a dress that costs three-times more than what you can afford. Work out what the absolute maximum you can spend is and take it from there.

3

perfectly. Six months is an ideal length of time and should make the process really enjoyable and simple rather than stressful.

4

Bringing too many people with you

40

You have just found the perfect venue for your celebration… The Bloxam Rooms in Bloxam Place in Rugby town centre are an ideal place to hold a celebration, whether this is a marriage, a civil partnership, same sex marriage or a celebration of a renewal of vows or naming ceremony. The staff at Rugby are available to discuss your specific requirements, as they show you around the ceremony room which can hold 58 guests and has disabled access.

Diane Lampard, Manager of the Rugby and Warwick offices said,

“Not all ceremonies need to be the same, and the Rugby staff can support you and discuss your ideas and options for your special day, guiding you through the choices and flexibility that you have. You can tailor your ceremony to your own personal needs to ensure that you, your family and guests have a special and memorable day.”

Last year Warwickshire Registration Service delivered 2,500 marriage ceremonies and 60 civil partnerships around the county.
