to the beach... Keep the holiday feeling going with ways to bring a little coastal love to your home.
coastal style Is more than just a decorative look, it spells easy-going and very versatile. It will work in any scheme to give your space a relaxed and calm feel that reminds you of lazy, fun filled summer holidays. Choose a sun-bleached palette of pale blues and baby pinks with lovely weathered wood and slubby linens or try a luxury navy and white throw and smart striped cushions into a white-painted room to give a little yacht-club chic.
just add accessories Bulkhead-style pendant lighting, blue glass wear and ceramics in soft blues and greys displayed on a fireplace or open shelves can be all it takes to transform your white Shaker kitchen or front room.

While there’s a temptation to go over the top with nautical prints, add one too many and you risk creating a room that looks too ‘themed’. Instead, layer pattern sparingly to give it more impact. Use wallpaper on a single wall for a subtle point, then add simple striped and soft brown furnishings for an understated yet smart take on the trend.

home savers Is your home ready for autumn? It’s almost time to get your home prepared for the colder months. See our top fixes for household dilemmas and money-saving tips.
STOP DRAUGHTS Ventilation is good, as it keeps a house fresh and healthy, so vents in the right places are essential. Draughts, however, from cracks in windows and door frames are not, and will play havoc with your heating bill. You can buy self-adhesive foam or rubber strips from most DIY stores that will seal the gaps in a jiffy.
CLEAR GUTTERS Protect your home from water damage by ensuring your rain gutters are clean and free from leaks. Wear protective gloves and scoop out leaves, old nests, muck and debris using a small trowel. Most window cleaners provide this service if you don’t want to get your hands dirty.
PACK IT AWAY Avoid a build-up of mildew and grime on your garden furniture by ensuring it’s stowed away safely for the winter months. Remove and wipe down the cushions, or pop the covers in the wash if you can remove them, and give the frames a wash too. Once totally dry, store in a cool, dry place until next year.
INSULATE PROPERLY One of the greatest household expenses over the winter is fuel costs, so ensure your loft and walls have proper insulation and draught excluders. See page 18 and get yours checked out professionally.

back-to-school ready Now is the time to get the family organised for the new term. CREATE A HOMEWORK AREA: Prepare a dedicated desk space so your children can sit quietly and concentrate on their schoolwork. MAKE A WALL CALENDAR: A family diary is great for keeping tabs on everyone’s agenda and will help you avoid missing events such non-uniform days and save your little ones the embarrassment! Why not make your own? It’s a great rainy day activity for the whole family to take part in. CLEAN THE HALLWAY: Get your entrance organised and tidy ready for the first week back. Pegs on the wall will avoid school bags being dumped on the floor and a shoe stand will keep the hallway clear. You could make little name tags, too!
painting windows Ensure wooden frames are in tip-top condition. 1. Prepare the window by removing catches and stays. Lightly sand the surface and brush away dust. Stick masking tape to the window edges and coat the wood with primer. 2. When the primer is dry, add the first coat on the frames and windowsill, making sure there are no runs or drips. 3. When dry, apply a second coat and leave to dry completely, preferably overnight. Remove the masking tape and replace the catches and stays.

that anyone can do!
1 Decorate with bunting This easy idea is a great way of displaying favourite handkerchiefs, hand-me-down scarves or even squares of pretty fabric. Hang a length of string or ribbon where the bunting is to go then peg along its length using dolly or pincer pegs. Use wooden styles for a rustic touch or colourful plastic for a jolly look.
2
Frame fabrics
Looking for an affordable way of bringing character and colour to bare walls? Create an eye-catching feature out of lovely fabric offcuts and a simple wooden embroidery hoop. Position your fabric in the frame so the tightening screw is at the top and central, then tighten well. Flip the hoop over and trim away excess fabric.
3 Display favourite finds Always stashing lovely postcards, prints, fabrics and trimmings? Why not up-cycle a picture frame into an understated backdrop for your beautiful belongings. Measure and mount flexible cork and a length of subtle wallpaper into a frame, then pin up your favourite finds to create an inspiring 3D mood board.

top upcycling tips Be brave and tak e risks. A lot of people are na turally creative but are scared to exp ress them selves. Don’t worry about what people think of yo ur work. Select your ma ter ials carefully, try to sou rce good scrap, its very hard to up-cycle chipboard. Try mixing ma terials and finishes, for exa mp le soften cold metal with wa rm lighting or timber to create the industrial look or co mbine fabric with painted surfaces. Don’t jus t do the no rm, this is your opportunity to make a real sta tement! Jus t because your design is up -c ycled it can still be current in ter ms of style, colours and ma terials . You wont get ev erything right all the time, mis tak es are good.

6 Hang tea towels beautifully Peg up towels, cloths and other kitchen textiles on a rail up-cycled from a wooden coat hanger. It's a lovely way to keep your kitchen clutter-free and make the most of unused space. Peg up bundles of dried herbs such as rosemary or lemongrass; not only do they look pretty, they also they act as a gentle fabric freshener - just what you need to keep linens smelling sweet.
7 Craft vintage vases Can't bring yourself to part with lovely-looking jars and bottles? Incorporate them into your country decorating scheme with this sweet vase up-cycle, perfect for adding a decorative touch to bare shelves and windowsills. Simply wrap your glass vessels with rustic twine or lace and secure loose ends with glue. Fill with little posies of seasonal wildflowers for a pretty vintage look. 8 Style up shelves Give a plain cupboard a country touch by adding a length of ribbon or braid along the edges of the shelves. Make sure cupboard shelves are free from dust. Choose a trimming with a similar width to the shelf edge then stick along with double sided tape, turning the ends under and tucking in at either end.
9 Give a lamp a lift Make sure your home stays bright and beautiful with a lovely lighting project. Recover a lampshade with a smart checked fabric and a stylish kilt pin to bring a handsome look to a painted turned-wood base.

pamper your skin overnight! It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing. the science bit
It is during the night, while your body is resting, that cells regenerate and the rejuvenation process kicks in. Night creams are formulated to help this process and incorporate ingredients that are focused on recovery, repair and moisturising skin. They feel thicker than most day creams and skin may appear extra shiny due to the richness, but by the time it’s morning and you are awake it should have fully absorbed to encourage a plump and hydrated complexion. Think of night creams as the skincare equivalent of cashmere bed socks and your cosiest nightwear!

1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime... Who gets breast cancer? Around 58,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK. The lifetime risk of getting breast cancer for a woman is 1 in 8. This is the same as saying around 13% of women get breast cancer in their lifetime. It also means that 7 out of 8 women – or around 87% of women – won’t get breast cancer. Men get breast cancer too, of the 58,000 people diagnosed each year with breast cancer, about 330 are men.

More people survive breast cancer than ever.
Breast screening: Breast screening is an x-ray examination of the breasts, known as a mammogram. It may help detect breast cancer before there are any signs or symptoms. The sooner breast cancer is diagnosed the more effective treatment may be. Because breast cancer is more common in women who are over the age of 50, women aged 50 to 70 are invited for routine breast screening every three years. Going for breast screening will not prevent breast cancer from developing, but it may find a breast cancer sooner – before it can be felt… A lump isn’t always cancer. Several benign (not cancer) breast conditions may cause a lump in the breast. Also many women will experience lumpy breasts just before their period. This is a normal response to changing hormones and often the lump or lumpiness disappears after the period. However, if this doesn’t go away, it’s important to get it checked out by a doctor. Any new lump or other breast change should always be assessed by a doctor.

what to ask your Do you dither when choosing a bunch of flowers, let alone briefing someone about your big-day blooms? Here are some useful questions to ask... How long do you need to decorate the venue? Your florist may need access to your ceremony and reception venues much earlier than anyone else. If they plan to assemble large arrangements at the venue, it's also a good idea to ask if they'd like an allocated room or space of their own, well away from where your other suppliers might be setting up.
Which flowers will be in season?
Which flowers will suit the style of my big day? Whether you're going for a modern or a traditional look, your choice of flowers should suit the style of your wedding. The expertise of your florist is vital here, so make sure he or she understands the atmosphere you want to create, so they can suggest flowers to match your vision. At your first consultation with your florist, take along any ideas you have and pictures of your dress and the bridesmaid dresses, so they can build up a detailed picture of your day.
Have you worked at my venue before?
If your florist is familiar with your venue, they'll know which arrangements work best. If they've never worked at the venue before, ask if they'd be prepared to take a tour with you so they can get a feel for the place. Bear in mind that some venues only allow you to use their own florist, so check before you set your heart on going with a particular person.
42
Locally grown, seasonal flowers are always better value and of a higher quality than those shipped in from abroad. The time of year you're getting married will therefore determine the flowers that will be available. For example, if you've got your heart set on lily of the valley, don't get married in September as this delicate flower is only
available for a few weeks in May and June. If the flowers you want aren't available, your florist should be able to suggest similar alternatives.
Which flowers and arrangements are popular at the moment? If it's important that your flowers are the height of fashion, check that your florist is hot on the latest trends.
What bouquet shape would you suggest to suit my dress? A good florist will have images of the most popular bouquet styles, from trailing shapes to neat hand-tied posies. The one you choose should complement your figure and the shape of your dress. If you're unsure of the best style for you, ask your florist's advice and try holding a few samples to see which feels the most comfortable.

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT COFFEE? Did you know, coffee may have a protective effect against coronary heart disease, or the risk of stroke? As the weather gets colder it’s time to start thinking about our heart health. Heart attacks are more common in the winter, which may be because the cold weather increases blood pressure, putting more strain on the heart or because the heart is working harder to maintain the body’s temperature when it's cold. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of heart attacks. CHD is a condition in which the coronary arteries get clogged up with deposits of cholesterol. Interestingly, research shows that moderate coffee consumption (four to five cups per day) does not significantly affect peoples' risk of CHD, or their risk of stroke. Indeed recent research suggests that coffee may even have a protective effect. www.britishcoffeeassociation.org
