soft stripes WHERE TO USE THEM: Just perfect for hallways, stripes draw your eye up and into the space, while vertical stripes of one width in soft, contrasting shades will add a lovely classic look to living and dining rooms. Bring a contemporary feel to bedrooms with different sized stripes in a painterly effect or a clean finish to kitchens and bathrooms with barcode styles in a fresh, bright shade. Curtains and cushions in classic stripes are the ideal and simple way to tie a scheme together, while a striped sofa or chair adds a nice strong focal point.

HOW TO USE THEM: Vertical stripes do create the illusion of height, go for horizontals for a more edgy feel, this also adds width. Consider the size of the room because thin stripes can look cluttered in a large room, while wide stripes can lose their impact in a smaller space.

Stripe Cushion The Range - ÂŁ4.99

HOW TO ACCESSORISE THEM: A striped rug is a really great way to add interest to wooden flooring, while a few striped cushions on a plain sofa will brighten a natural scheme.

CLASHING PATTERNS Gone are the days of perfectly matching interiors, the current trend is about expression, personality and creating a look that will get people inspired and talking. Clashing your prints is an easy and affordable way to do just this and looks brilliant. Try it!

So, to make sure your look is cool but not overly complicated or chaotic, here are some clever tips…

Keep It Tonal

Soften The Style Clashing, contrasting prints don’t always have to be loud and garish. Consider muted, soft shades and delicate, subtle patterns, such as coral pink wallpaper teamed with beautiful pearl cushions. This will still create a stunning look, but will attract attention in a less obvious way.

Neutral Start If your walls and floors are neutral, it’s pretty safe to say that no matter what whacky colours and patterns you throw together on your sofa, bed or kitchen worktops, your look will seem perfectly planned and beautifully stylish. If you’re new to print clashing, then perhaps begin with just two patterns to get you started.

SPRING CLEANING 7 weird but wonderful tips Artificial Sweetener: If you

one

are out to dinner at a restaurant, or if grease splatters on you while you are cooking, use artificial sweetener immediately to blot the stain. The fine powder will absorb the oil. You may have to keep blotting and using more sweetener, but it should work! Great news artificial sweetener is always handy at any eatery.

4 BREAD Tear out the doughy centre of white bread and knead it into a ball, then blot any smears on clothes repeatedly with the dough until the stain lifts from the fabric. Now wash the garment. The dough ball is also safe to use on lipstick marks on dry-clean only wool clothing

6. Toothpaste

14

Oh no, a pen leaked in the pocket of your favourite shirt! This may or may not work, depending on the fabric and the ink, but it is certainly worth a try before using the shirt as a duster. Put non-gel toothpaste on the stain and rub the fabric vigorously together. Rinse with water. Did some of the ink come out? Repeat the process a few more times until you get rid of all the ink. The same process should also work for lipstick.

It can all-too-easily happen: you’re near the end of a little jog or run when you trip in a pothole, sending you flying to the ground. Hopefully, all that is hurt is your pride but if you have a bleeding knee which manages to leave bloodstains on your clothes, soaking bloodstains overnight in cola removes them. Try it, it may sound really crazy, but it should do the job!

7… Shaving Cream

Take a can of non-gel shaving cream and spray it onto the ink stain, rub it in gently and let it dry before washing as normal.

choose the RIGHT grey Grey is the modern neutral and is now the biggest selling paint colour after white. Here’s how to get the right shade for every room, every time.

Finding the right grey is similar to buying a red lipstick: you choose one with the undertone that suits your skin shade. If you hold together a fan of grey paint charts, you’ll see how widely the tones really do vary. The cool end of the spectrum has blue undertones, passing through tints of green and yellow, ending up at warm shades with red bases that give them brown, pink or purple tints. So, firstly decide on the ‘temperature’ of colour your room needs - cool or warm - then how dark to take it…

Cool, dark greys THE UNDERTONES: From deepest slate to dark concrete, these greys have blue in their mix. THE SPACE: Avoid if possible in a north-facing room. They are perfect for cooling down an over-bright, south-facing space. THE ACCENTS TO TRY: Go tonal with blue-based colours for a subtle highlight - think teal. Or, create a bold contrast with a splash of rich yellow, orange or pink.

THE UNDERTONES: Frosty shades of pale blue lay beneath these calming blue hues.

THE UNDERTONES: These shades have either a hint of yellow in them, giving them a brownish tint, or a touch of red, which gives a pinkish tinge.

THE UNDERTONES: Tints of yellow can give these deeper greys a greenish hue, while touches of red can make them look brown through to purple in some lights.

THE SPACE: Perfect for a small but sunny room where the light can make deeper colours a little intense, while boosting its feeling of space. THE ACCENTS TO TRY: Build a palette with barley with tints of palest blues and green, or throw in a dash of scarlet for Scandi style. Blush pinks also complement these shades.

THE SPACE: Great for east and west-facing rooms for diffused light at sunrise or sunset respectively, while adding a little warmth. THE ACCENTS TO TRY: Mix ochre to yellow-tinged greys or try a dark, earthy green. Pink tinted greys will look great with coral and peach.

THE SPACE: Anywhere you want a cosy warm feel perfect for a north-facing room that needs the chill taking out of it. THE ACCENTS TO TRY: Add hints of black, khaki or olive to green-tinted hues, or nude beige. With red warmed tones, try lilac.

finding the plot

Compose a wish list. Do you want to live in

a rural area or a community? How far would you move from family and friends? How big a plot do you want? Is this your forever home; if so, how do you plan to future-proof it? A common mistake is to look over too large an area. If you’re search isn't focused, you’ll be overwhelmed by the scale of your hunt.

Subscribe to plot finders. Try www.plotsearch.co.uk, www.plotbrowser.com and www.plotfinder.net

Know your budget. Talk to a specialist mortgage adviser. Aim to collate around 35% of your overall sum on the plot. But in locations where plots are rare and property prices high, you might need to spend 50%.

Ask around. Once you’ve chosen an area, visit local shops, pubs and building sites to see if there are any plots for sale. Introduce yourself to estate agents and land auctioneers and knock on doors near to derelict land to find out who owns it. Use maps and Google Earth to search for hidden land, such as large gardens or gaps between and behind houses. It’s usually easier to get approval for a development between or next to existing houses.

Consider buying a dilapidated property to demolish. living design ideas Making the most of space and light is absolutely key to a modern living room design. Keep window treatments simple to allow plenty of natural light in the room, or consider installing floor-to-ceiling bi-fold glass doors. Go for unfussy flooring such as solid wood flooring. Keep the space light and open with a mix of soft neutrals such as pale grey or a delicately patterned cream and white wallpaper. Add a chic modern pendant light, such as a gleaming mother-of-pearl design to complete the look. If you want to keep to white in the living room, you can still create a funky modern space by adding some eye-catching wall art - why not go for an oversized painting, or perhaps some colourful pop-art? Enlarge one of your own photos onto a big canvass. Printed designs like pop art can also be introduced on cushion fabrics and lampshades for a touch of fun.

26

When choosing furniture opt for low level seating, a sideboard or a modern classic, such as a leather easy chair. Seek out original 20thcentury pieces or go for a modern take on one of these stylish designs. Create a contemporary feel with geometric designs on rugs, which bring a fresh and bold look to a neutral decorating scheme. Go for grown-up glamour in the living room with statement lighting, such as a chrome standard lamp or twinkling chandelier, a large circular mirror that will reflect light around the room and glass or gloss wood coffee tables. For an urban warehouse-apartment feel go for exposed brick walls and combine this backdrop with striking furniture and accessories. Choose furniture upholstered in bold colours or add unexpected pieces such as a woven or swing chair.

Modern concrete living room A side table in the living room used as a display space for chic photography. A glittery, pink-speckled concrete wall is perfectly suited to this glamourmeets-industrial chic living room. Botanical-inspired living room A botanical living room which features large expanses of florals pattern in muted shades. Smaller floral designs and details add a splash of bright colour. Geometric living room Tie together a deconstructed living space with geometric shapes for informal, against-the-rules style.

Tropical-inspired living room A luxurious living room with white and peacock blue seating is an oasis of calm. A gorgeous wool rug adds comfort to this modern scheme. Exposed brick work Exposed brick and stripped-back flooring gives a rustic feel to a contemporary home. Adding a designer chair and building floor-to-ceiling shelves to display all your wares/books completes the look. Create moveable storage Use storage units on castors so the room can be moved around for parties or for an instant change without blocking the light. Add mid-century artwork Create a mid-century living room with vintage classics, rich woods and muted tones and add hints of colour with some quirky artwork/photographs on the walls.

Lilac living room with damask print sofa A pretty and oh-so feminine living room with a calm, elegant feel. Damask prints in a soft, neutral palette look nicely contemporary and lend a subtle, easy elegance to Scandi-style bare floors and raw textures.

Make dramatic style statements Beautifully res tor ed plasterwork and adding a few sta tement piece s like a mustard yellow so fa and vintage chandelier, really pulls the look togethe r and co mplements ori ginal fea tures. Create a glamo rous living area Grown-up gla mo ur is

DON’T FALL FOR EXERCISE MYTHS The world of exercise can be confusing if you’re new to it. There are as you probably expect, some common fitness myths that can be quite unhelpful...

3. EXERCISE JUST MAKES YOU EAT MORE Think getting moving will only make you ravenous? Think again! Researchers at Leeds University found that for most people, doing intense physical exercise caused no automatic increase in hunger or eating.

36

2

Exercising on an empty stomach burns more fat There’s a common belief that working out before you’ve eaten forces your body to tap into its energy reserves, but there’s no real evidence to support this. Your body needs fuel to provide the energy for a workout. If you haven't eaten, you’re more likely to become tired more quickly and therefore stop exercising sooner. Eating a small meal or snack - such as a chicken sandwich or low-fat yogurt with fruit about two hours before exercising will give you the best results.

4. Muscle will turn to fat

as soon as you stop exercising

Muscle and fat are two distinct types of tissue that don’t turn into each other. When you stop exercising, you begin to lose muscle mass. This can slow your metabolism. If you continue to eat the same foods in the same quantities, it can lead to an accumulation of excess fat and weight gain. To stop this, just keep exercising.

5

Regular running ruins your knees

Researchers at Stanford University in the U.S. disagree. In an eight-year study of 800 older runners and non-runners, they found that the runners actually experienced less knee and other musculoskeletal pain than those who didn't exercise. Ensure that you wear good trainers!

YOU CAN EVEN EXERCISE SITTING ON THE SOFA! If you don’t fancy exercising in the rain or snow, you can start getting fit without even opening the front door. Try these simple exercises… WHILE THE KETTLE’S BOILING… While waiting for your morning cup of tea, from a standing position, lunge forward with one leg, lowering your back knee towards the floor and dropping your body. Make sure your front knee does not extend beyond your toes. Raise and repeat with the other leg. Build up to 15 repetitions.

Do heel raises. Place your feet hip-width apart, look ahead and hold your tummy in. Raise your heels until you’re on the balls of your feet. Hold for a second, then lower your feet to the ground. Continue until you’ve finished teeth cleaning - about three minutes.

WHILE WATCHING TV… Work your bottom - squeeze and release your buttocks for one minute, then draw your belly button towards your spine to work the deep abdominal muscles too.

WHILE VACUUMING… Trim your thighs while cleaning. Stand straight, feet hip-width apart, one hand on your hip, the other on the vacuum handle. Step forward with your right foot, keeping your back straight and extending the vacuum in front of you. Bend both of your knees so they are both at a 90-degree angles, your left knee should nearly touch the floor. Repeat stepping forward with the left foot. Repeat five/ten times each side.

table names

Gone are the days of 'Table One' and 'Table Two', it's all about bringing your personality into as many elements of your day as possible and table names gives you the perfect opportunity. Having a table name instead of just a number allows you to bring in some sentimental or personal touches to the table, after all your guests will be spending a good chunk of time there. It can be a bit of fun to raise a laugh or a clever but simple way to tell your love story.

Movie Lovers & TV Boffs: if you're not able to agree on what to watch on a Sunday night in then this might not be for you, but for movie lovers there are loads of options for movie-related table names.

Movie Quotes: like “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” from Love Story, or “Don’t forget I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her” from Notting Hill.

Romantic Couples: from movies. Noah and Allie, Rose and Jack, Scarlett and Rhett - you get the picture.

Movie Icons: your favourite leading ladies and leading men, we’re thinking more old Hollywood (Garbo & Astaire) but if you want Arnie and Clooney, who are we to object?

Action Heroes: from both childhood and more recent blockbusters used with a little bit of humour.

Fave Programmes: could be a simple way to name the tables without compromising too much.

A Table Plan To Tell Your Story:

BEEF AND SPINACH BURRITOS  Warm 2tsp vegetable oil in a large frying

pan over a high heat. Add 750g mince and fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring with a wooden spoon, until well browned.  Add 250g wholegrain rice and 475g spinach, and mix well. Cover and cook for a further 6-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the spinach has wilted. Stir in 290g hot and spicy beans and their sauce.  Divide the beef mixture between 4 seeded warmed tortillas, spooning it along the centre of each one.  Scatter over 50g cheddar.  Roll up the tortillas, tucking in the ends to stop the filling from falling out. Cut in half at a slight angle and serve with 6tbsp fat-free natural yogurt swirled with hot or sweet chilli sauce, if using.

Panzanella  Pre-heat the oven to 130C. Put 1

ciabatta loaf, torn into pieces onto a baking tray and put in the oven for 10 minutes to dry out. Leave to cool.  Meanwhile, to make the dressing, whisk 4tbsp olive oil with 1 1/2 tbsp white wine vinegar, 1 crushed garlic glove and 1/2 tsp dried oregano. Season to taste, then set aside.  Toss 230g sweet vine-ripened tomatoes cut into quarters, 1 small sliced red onion, 3 tbsp drained capers, 4 anchovy fillets roughly chopped, 2 handfuls fresh basil and ciabatta in a serving dish.  Drizzle over the dressing, then toss again until evenly coated. Leave to stand for 15 minutes before serving to allow the flavours to infuse.
