Frame French windows with floor-length curtains in a lovely teacup design and pick out a graphic colour-block rug in bold shades to tone with painted chairs and liven up the floor. To dress the table, throw on a bird-themed tablecloth and offset with a selection of bright artisan ceramics in cool blues and greens.

For a calming, neutral backdrop, dress a dining room in a subtle white-patterned wallpaper and paint the floor in crisp, white floor paint. Add salvage-style chic with an up-cycled table and chairs, the natural tones of wood will help to soften the industrial effect. Re-purpose a fringed throw as a casual cloth and top with a twiggy table arrangement to complete the country design.

3. cosy & neutral Turn a length of fabric into a cute table runner and mix with textured throws and cushions for an elegant and fresh dining room. An X-frame table and bench combined with mix-and-match chairs to keep the look casual. Paint walls in a peaceful nude shade and dress the table with a country-style salad bowl and a jug of beautiful fresh flowers.

HOME & GARDEN There’s nothing quite like fresh peas from the garden, so tasty. Grow a self-supporting dwarf variety like Kelvedon Wonder and sow the seeds in a row about an inch apart in rich, moist soil. Water well and mulch the bed too. Keep picking the pods when they’re nice and lumpy or the plant will set seed and stop producing. Pea shoots are easy to grow quickly in the salad bed or in a seed tray. Plant a row of seeds, then snip off the tops when they’re about to reach10cm tall to use raw as a salad leaf, then the shoots will grow back again. Grow sweet peas against a tripod or fence near your favourite seat in the garden, pick everyday for the house. They smell so gorgeous and they look so pretty...

Easy to grow in po ts or in a sunny she ltered spot, everyone lov es strawberries - pro tect them fro m birds an d squirrels wi th ne tting or a clo che. Beautifu l wi th fresh cream !  Wa ter your plants frequently and fee d wi th a tomato feed ev ery week.  As soon as berrie s appear, cover the soil under the plants wit h straw to help sto p them rotting.  Pick berries as the y ripen, so more wil l grow.  In autumn, remov e the old brown lea ves and straw - po t on any roo ted runne rs for next year.

GARDEN One of the most versatile evergreen plants, grow lavender for bees, to flavour food, for its delicate scent - and because it’s lovely. Lavender needs a gritty dry-ish soil, but will grow happily in a container with extra gravel in the compost. Plant now that the soil has warmed up and prune back after flowering to keep it in shape. Edge your vegetable beds with clumps of pretty chives and you’ll always have a bunch to hand for mash, sauces and omelettes. You can break up the flowers too to liven up dishes.

14

Serves 2 for a light summer lunch.  Fry 100g chopped bacon, then toss with 50g toasted pine nuts or chopped almonds.  Cook 150g peas (fresh or frozen) with a sprig of mint, cool and tip into a serving bowl.  Add a handful of pea shoots and the cooled bacon and pine nuts.  Make a dressing with a few tablespoons of crème fraiche, a squeeze of lemon, chopped mint and chives and some seasoning, to taste.  Pour the dressing over the salad, and scatter with chive flowers.

Metallic detailing and linen are a mix made in heaven and stencilling is a really easy way to update a plain cushion. How to: Protect the fabric on the other side of your cushion by slotting a piece of card under the area you are stencilling. Use a low tack adhesive to stick the stencil in place. Using a sponge or stiff brush, gently apply paint over the stencil. Remember to not overload your sponge as it may bleed instead; build the paint layer by layer. Allow to dry properly before setting the fabric paint with a hot iron, as per kit instructions.

Update an inexpensive pendant light with spray paint and add a copper glow to the inside of the pendant. How to: Make sure you spray in a well ventilated area and mask off around the edge of your light to keep the line crisp. Build the paint gradually, allowing it to dry in between each layer - this will prevent drips and give you an even coverage.

Give plain white vases a chic update with this season's brassy tone. How to: Create a polka-dot pattern using a sponge applicator and gold porcelain paint. Let paint dry thoroughly before baking in the oven for 35 minutes at 150ď‚°C to fix. For a less permanent look, try wrapping bands of patterned tape around a vase to create different widths. When you fancy change, simply peel them off and try a different colour or pattern.

Gold leaf is an easy way to add subtle golden highlights to a bedroom. The perfect place to store jewellery and trinkets. How to: Wipe any dust and dirt from the bowl's surface. Apply a thin and even layer of adhesive primer to the inside of the bowl, and leave for 15 minutes. Gently lift a sheet of gold leaf and apply to the surface, smoothing with a soft brush. Repeat until you have covered the area, brushing and smoothing as you go. Rub gently with a soft cloth and remove any excess.

urban garden Ideas If you live in the town and have a garden or outdoor space, then it makes sense that you'll want to get the most out of it. However, unless you're very lucky, it's very likely you have a limited amount of space to play with, so creativity is key!

big ideas for urban living

5

Let's start with the luxury end of the scale: the contemporary design of many urban gardens makes for an excellent backdrop to 端ber-modern touches. Stylish outdoor showers and granite and steel kitchen areas can pack a powerful industrial but chic punch while being really practical. Inventive topiary and statement walls continue the modern theme. Don't be afraid of using a bright - or even acid - colour palette for accents while wall murals will transform a domestic space. Don't be afraid to go full-on futuristic - hanging tables teamed with steel garden furniture will be a great key focal point. Urban gardens don't have to be avant garde, or even overly modern. You can always opt for a far more relaxed and low-key atmosphere by blurring the boundaries between indoors and out. Sofas, throws and other soft furnishings that pick out colours and textures from your interior will give a sense of continuity and make your overall living space feel bigger. Talking of size, there's a number of shortcuts to establishing a sense of space in a compact urban garden. Plant vertically by using attractive, wall-mounted planters to free up floor space or upturned wooden pallets you could hang mirrors to give the illusion of spaciousness.

Urban garden with external fireplace

Urban-style garden living room

Extend the use of your outside space as much as possible throughout the year with an external fireplace. Not only will it keep you warm, it will make a stunning centrepiece. Style the garden with throws, cushions, lamps and night lights will add to the magic.

If you use your garden as an outdoor living room, why not style it like one? There's loads of well-designed outdoor furniture to choose from, plus some indoor pieces work equally well outside. Add to the design with mirrors, exterior paint and candles.

30

Urban outdoor space with different living zones Creating zones is a clever way to add interest to an outdoor space and make it feel bigger than it is. Create a dining section in the garden with a table and chairs near the house.

urban cooking area with outdoor storage

An outdoor cooking area means you can rustle up more than a few burgers on a summer evening. Try an impressive setup which includes plenty of storage so you don't have to constantly bring out cookware from the kitchen.

Alfresco dining area with shade sail canopy

loving

summer

Not everyone is a sun worshipper and shade sails are a great way to create a little bit of cover as they can be put up, moved and taken down as you please. They work particularly well over an alfresco dining table or seating area.

Urban decking area with interior design accents Steal elements from your interior to add the wow factor to your outside space. Use contemporary materials to create a stylish but low-maintenance urban garden. Laid-back garden decking teamed with super-stylish furniture and big colourful cushions is a must. Modern white futuristic garden with hanging table Look to more industrial materials to conjure up urban chic at its best. Steel and wire, alongside lots of white will add a futuristic feel to create an edgy outdoor garden space. Architectural style garden Mixed materials create defined areas and give a compact plot a modern and structured architectural feeling. Bold greenery works in harmony to soften the urban edge.

A winding pathway, lit by little tea lights will entice you to venture to the end of the garden.

White walled urban garden with pink accents A high walled garden is the solution to not being overlooked by neighbours but can make an outdoor space feel confined. Painting it all white will make the most of reflected sunshine while adding splashes of acid brights will give it a vibrant urban flair which will look so fresh!

Urban garden lighting

Bring a touch of the secret garden to your outdoor space with clever planting and outdoor lighting.

TARG

If you’ve hit a summer slim-down sticking point a few diet and exercise tweaks can help… There is no shortcut to a flat tummy, toned arms and a tighter bottom. To slim down, you have to lose weight everywhere by reducing your calorie intake (eat less!) as part of a

the tricky target: flabby arms The root cause of bingo wings and bra-strap bulge? That’ll be ageing: from our 30s onwards, we tend to lose muscle mass and gain fat. This is partially due to hormonal changes that cause the metabolism to slow down, meaning we can’t burn as many calories each day, but it’s also because of a tendency to be less active. Team that with a loss of elasticity in the skin and gravity taking its toll - and there you have it, flabby arms! Diet tweaks: Steer clear of crash diets! Drastically reducing calories can backfire, as you lose muscle not conducive to toned arms - and this, in turn, slows metabolism. To reduce calories sensibly: every day, eat three healthy balanced meals (half a plate of veg and a quarter each of protein and carbs), plus two healthy snacks - try natural yoghurt or fruit - to keep your metabolism ticking over. Nuts are also good. Exercise tips: The key is to push yourself: experts say high-intensity aerobic exercise delivers a bigger, longer rise in your resting metabolic rate (i.e. how many calories you burn). To get the benefits, try a more vigorous class at the gym or include short bursts or sprinting in your runs. Swimming is also a great way to tone and sculpt arms, as you propel them through the water.

34

healthy diet and exercising regularly (move more!). Well, the right exercises can help to tip the balance in your favour. So, get ready to say goodbye to your stubborn flab this summer, it’s going for good!

the tricky target: love handles Those bulges over your jeans could be a sign that you’re getting too many of your dietary calories from refined carbohydrates and fatty/sugary foods. Over time, this can lead to the body being unable to use its insulin properly (insulin is the hormone that helps your body store glucose from carbohydrates and sugary food so it can be used for energy). This leads to a build-up of glucose in the blood, and your body’s default reaction is to store it all as fat… enter the dreaded love handles.

Diet tweaks: There are simple swaps you can

make to help reduce your calorie in take without feeling deprived. Switch refined carbs for complex carbs (so that’s brown rice or pasta, instead of white), and eat more lean protein (choose chicken or turkey breasts over beef). If you’re craving chocolate, go for small bars with 85% cocoa.

Exercise tips: Pump some iron! It’s a great way to help burn excess calories: experts say the more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn, even after your workout. Try mixing strength-training, such as a body pump class, with gentle cardio sessions, three to four times a week. Cycling is a great way to work the hips, and you can build it into your commute.

Try these food swaps

white rice for brown rice beef for turkey milk chocolate for dark chocolate

the tricky target: thighs and bums Good news: researchers say carrying excess weight here is healthier than carrying it on your waist or stomach (as this fat sits closer to your heart and other vital organs, which could mean a higher risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes). But why do some of us pile the pounds on our bottom halves? Well, it’s to do with sex hormones. Oestrogen means that women gain weight around the hips and thighs to prepare the body for carrying a baby. Genetics also play a part.

Exercise tips: Doing lunges and sumo squats (these are deeper squats in a wider stance) with weights is a great way to blast your lower half. But you also need to do some regular cardio exercise - otherwise you’ll just have toned muscles sitting under a layer of fat. Running is a great way to burn fat all over your body and is particularly good for slimming the legs and bum. Combine this with your strength training (squats and lunges), three or four times a week.

Diet tweaks: So, curves are a good thing, but if you feel you have an unhealthy amount of fat in this area, it could be to do with your oestrogen levels. There are a number of factors that can affect them, one of which is eating a lot of meat and dairy, which is high in fat. So, alongside a healthy, balanced diet, replace some red meat and dairy with fibrous greens, leafy veg, beans, fruit and wholegrain foods.

anyone for golf...

Set in the heart of the Warwickshire For full details call David on 01788 521800 or email davidmills@draycotehotel.co.uk countryside, Whitefields Golf Club and Golf Course in partnership with Draycote Hotel was opened in 1992 and has hosted many championships over the years. It is a great all-weather course and its fantastic drainage makes it capable of withstanding the elements without having to close. The golf course is a testing 6,289 yards and, with a par of 71, is a genuine challenge for golfers of all handicaps. Whitefields also offers a 16 bay driving range, a practice chipping and bunker practice area and an 18 hole putting green. Draycote Hotel sits adjacent to the course and whether golfing for business or pleasure, provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy refreshments, meals or an overnight stay. The most striking feature about Whitefields is Draycote Water. The lake laps the 13th hole and provides a beautiful backdrop all year round. The signature hole is surely ‘Curlie’s Corner’. This hole has no room for error. 184 yards from the medal tee, the green is surrounded by water and can ruin a good card! We provide a warm welcome to golfers of all abilities. It is always fun to discover a course for yourself, so we do hope to see you at Whitefields soon.

What is about

it shoes?

They're endlessly fascinating, aren't they. Could it be the instant mood-boosting power of new shoes? Or the fact that while our weight goes up and down our shoe size stays the same. Or, dare we say it, could it be something to do with shoes being sexy?

e science bit... here comes th According to the neurologist Vilayanur S Ramachandran, it's hard-wired into our brains. Apparently, the brain areas controlling feet and private parts are next door to each other in the somatosensory cortex. All it takes is some neural cross-talk and hey presto, shoes become the footwear equivalent of George Clooney.

ur perfect shoes... how to choose yo

When it comes to shoe style, the heel and vamp are key. OK, you may be thinking `What on earth is a vamp?' It's part of the upper - the bit that covers the foot from the toe cleavage upwards. Shoes with a high vamp (think boots, loafers, trainers) look great on longer legs and work well with trousers and short skirts. Shoes with a low vamp (think court shoes and ballet flats) elongate the legs and look good with most dresses and skirts. Here are some useful tips for picking shoes according to your natural foot and leg architecture: Shorter legs: A low vamp is essential. Peep toes are also good and try out on trend nude shoes for leg-lengthening.

40

Thicker ankles or calves: Go for low vamp and a thicker sole or platform. A wider heel, stacked heel or wedge is better than a stiletto, and sling-backs work well. Avoid ankle straps. Slimmer ankles and calves: Steer clear of chunky looking shoes. Instead, choose fine straps, heels and soles. Wedges should also be fine and slim. Longer feet: Horizontal straps and high vamp will help shorten the feet. Bear in mind that pointed toes often make your feet look longer. Shorter feet: Go for a low vamp. Try and avoid straps that cut across your feet, although a T-bar can work well. As with wardrobe decluttering, try and spot your repeat buying habits and the gaps in your shoe wardrobe. Once you've found the gaps, hit the shoe shops. A tip for buying new shoes. Feet expand during the day so plan your shopping trip towards the middle or end of the day. The later you go, the more likely you are to find the perfect fit. Visit Niki Lu’s in Bank Street, Rugby for some fab footwear.
