Logs being handcrafted and the log shell beginning to take shape at the Pioneer site in British Columbia.

One of the biggest team projects in the history of Frey Construction is underway!! And it’s like nothing we’ve ever done! We have completed several projects for these Clients over the years, so when Jack and Tracy came to us for their log home build, we were thrilled for the opportunity to work with them once again!

In This Issue:

After lots and lots of planning, Jack and Tracy selected Pioneer Log Homes for the first part of the project: building the home’s log shell. Pioneer handcrafted each and every log and completed the

popular in Canada and starting to make its way onto networks in the United States, such as HGTV and the Discovery Channel. Once Pioneer completes the log shell, it’s Frey Construction’s turn… We will manage all of the finishing work to exact specifications. And as we complete the log home build, we’ll keep you posted with pictures and progress. What an exciting project!

The involvement of Pioneer Log Homes will be aired on Timber Kings television show. Currently in its fourth season, the television show features six master craftsman from Pioneer and follows their day-to-day operations as they build luxury log homes and log cabins around the world. The show is

We’re celebrating 21 years in business! We have worked hard to earn our place as a leader in the home improvement industry. And we know our achievements are possible only because of your continued support! From all of us at Frey Construction, THANK YOU! We can’t thank you enough. We appreciate your patronage and continued trust in our company. Frey Construction Awarded 2015 President’s Club Steep Slope Award Frey Construction was once again awarded the prestigious GAF President’s Club Steep Slope Award. Founded in 1886, GAF isthe world’s largest manufacturer of commercial and residential roofing, and each year awards this honor based on the contractor’s “performance, reliability, and service.” Award recipients have consistently provided superiorquality services, and have excelled in providing extensive and consistent warranty options that offer long-term security and peace of mind. This highly coveted praise recognizes Frey Construction & Home Improvement, LLC as one of the “elite of the elite” residential roofing contractors in the United States. Across the nation fewer than 2% of contractors win this award… Meanwhile, we’ve been bestowed with this honor every year since 2012!

Heroes for Honor Operation Eagles Wings Sauk Prairie’s Heroes for Honor has been really busy raising funds this year for the Badger Honor Flight. In fact, they were able to raise enough funds to cover the costs of an Honor Flight, $100,000 to be exact! But, they’re not done…They already have their sights set on raising another $100,000 for the 2017 Honor Flight. Sauk Prairie Vets will be the first to be considered to fill the flight. Badger Honor Flight is a regional affiliate of the national Honor Flight Network. The Honor Flight Network aims to ensure that WWII and terminally ill veterans from any L to R: Richard and Kris Frey(contributors); Fritz Wyttenbach and Stan war have the opportunity to see in person the memorials Theis (Heroes for Honor volunteers). erected in their honor in Washington D.C. The Honor Flight Network provides all amenities to the veterans, including all transportation, meals, and lodging. Everything is free to the veterans…a small token of appreciation for how much they sacrificed for this great country. Participating veterans need their own funds only for buying personal souvenirs. Richard and Kris Frey donated $500 in honor of Richard’s brothers, Art and Lavern. To learn more about the Badger Honor Flight, visit: http://www.badgerhonorflight.org

Composting 101

Composting upgrades garden soil, keeps plants healthy, and can even lessen planet-unfriendly greenhouse gases. Here’s how to do it:

It’s not just for people in the country anymore: Composting is great for all gardeners because it improves soil, which in turn prevents plant diseases. And it can even reduce harmful greenhouse gases. How to Get Started Choose a container that’s made of wood (or some other sturdy material) and no smaller than three by three feet. Place it in your yard in a shady spot with good drainage. Start adding waste in a ratio of three “browns” to one “green.” Browns are carbon-rich materials and include wood chips, straw, branches, and leaves. Greens provide nitrogen and include grass clippings and kitchen scraps, like eggshells and carrot tops. When you’re adding new material, dig a hole in the pile and stir the new stuff in so it gets coated with the old mixture. How to Maintain the Pile Composting is a smelly process. You’re breaking down food and yard waste, after all. But it shouldn’t be so offensive that the neighbors complain. If you notice a stench, make sure you have enough browns in the pile. (Ask a tree service or a landscaper for extra wood chips or brush.) Also check the moisture level by grabbing a handful of the heap. It should be at about 50 to 60 percent, meaning the compost feels like a wrung-out sponge. If it’s too dry, let rain even out the moisture. If it’s too wet, add a few more browns. How to Tell if the Compost Is Ready When it’s ready for use—which can take anywhere from a few months to a year—compost looks and smells like very dark soil. If you’re unsure, put it to the plastic bag test: Place a small amount in a plastic bag and take a whiff before sealing. Then place the bag in a drawer for a few days. When you open the bag, the sample should smell the same as it did before. If it has a strong or stronger odor, your compost needs more time in the pile. Article excerpted from “Real Simple” online blog, written by Ashley Tate and Sharon Tanenbaum (incorporates views of Gary Oshins, assistant director for programs at the United States Composting Council, in Ronkonkoma, New York).

New Uses for Old Things Clever new uses for ordinary household items. Oven Mitt as BBQ Utensil Holder Slide all the utensils you’ll need into an oven mitt and use the fabric loop to hang it on your grill. No more burned steaks because you forgot the meat thermometer inside. Ice Cube Tray as Sunburn Soother Freeze cubes of aloe vera for instant sunburn relief when you forget the SPF. Scratched CD as Safety Reflector Want drivers to see—not sideswipe—your mailbox at night? Glue headlight-catching CDs onto its side. Ice Cream Scoop as Sand-Castle Tool An ice cream scoop deposits perfect domes for a Taj Mahal (or a yurt). Metal Magazine Rack as Towel Holder Roll pool towels and store them vertically, so your kids can grab one before taking a swim. Muffin Tin as Large Ice Cube Tray The cold, hard truth: Small ice cubes melt fast, leaving a pitcher of lemonade watery. To make long-lasting jumbo cubes, use a muffin tin. Pop them out by running the back of the tin under hot water for 30 seconds.

Citrus Peel as Firestarter Kick-start a fire with citrus peels. Leave orange or lemon peels on the counter for several days to dry out. Then use the pretty pieces as kindling in your fire pit or bonfire for a fragrant flame starter.

“It was the most hassle-free project ever. Good communication all along, and then the crew showed up, did the job and then was done. Also the quoting and planning phase went great— working with Katie was easily the most professional and friendly experience of getting quotes from a contractor we’ve ever dealt with. Expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for.” ~ Michael & Carol Kroll, Mazomanie (Roof, January 2016) “I am very satisfied in the customer service I received from Katie. She went above and beyond to contact us and keep us in the loop for all that was happening with our project as well as follow up with us afterward to make sure we were happy with the end result. The cost of the project and the quality of the products and workmanship exceeded my expectations. I would definitely recommend Frey Construction & Home Improvement!” ~ Jason & Taya Curtis, Mazomanie (Gutters, January 2016) “[We chose to contract with you because] you have good products and have good prices compared to others. The whole process was easy to deal with from start to finish.” ~David & Carla McKinney, Oregon (Roof, March 2016) “[We chose to contract with you because] of good reviews, BBB rating, and home show awards. Your company is very thorough with the job. JJ Prine kept us abreast of progress and obstacles which was appreciated. He recommended some great options to re-wrap back windows which cost more, but in the end, gave a better finished product. Katie and Tyler were great to work with and made the process very smooth! JJ, Jason, and Guillermo were on time, worked hard, and were very detailed. We will be using you again for a deck and screened-in porch, maybe sometime next year!!” ~Andre & Sue Astorga, Madison (Siding, Insulation, & Bath Vent, March 2016)

Creamy Broccoli & Chicken Quinoa Ingredients:

2 cups reduced sodium chicken broth 1 cup milk 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning ½ cup flour 2 cups water, divided 1 cup uncooked quinoa, rinsed ¼ cup cooked, crumbled bacon 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts ¼ cup shredded Gruyere cheese 3 cups fresh broccoli florets 2 teaspoons seasoning (like Emeril’s Essence or any basic blend you like)

Directions:

Sauce: Preheat the oven to 400o and generously grease a 9x13 baking dish (seriously, be generous because it really really sticks to the sides). Bring the chicken broth and ½ cup milk to a low boil in a saucepan. Whisk the other ½ cup milk with the poultry seasoning and flour; add the mixture to the boiling liquid and whisk until a smooth creamy sauce forms. Assembly: In a large bowl, mix the sauce from step one, one cup water, quinoa, and bacon and stir to combine. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Slice the chicken breasts into thin strips and lay the chicken breasts strips over the top of the quinoa mixture. Sprinkle with the seasoning. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes. Broccoli: While the casserole is in the oven, place the broccoli in boiling water for 1 minute until it turns bright green and then run under cold water. Set aside. Bake: Remove the casserole from the oven, check the mixture by stirring it around in the pan, and if needed, bake for an additional 10-15 minutes to get the right consistency. When the quinoa and chicken are cooked and the sauce is thickened, add the broccoli and a little water (up to one cup) until the consistency is creamy and smooth and you can stir it easily in the pan. Top with the cheese and bake for 5 minutes, or just long enough to melt the cheese.
