Home Improvement, LLC

We recently completed a siding and deck remodel project for Clients, Bob McKinley and Renee Hegerfield. This major facelift to their home in Spring Green included siding and a deck replacement. We’re excited to share some of the details with you!

In replacing the home’s exterior wood siding, we may have angered several woodpeckers in the area. The birds had been using the McKinley/Hegerfield home as their sounding board… We put a hault to their damage, with new James HardieTM fiber cement siding. And by implementing three styles of siding—vertical, shake, and lap siding—we took a truly innovative approach to emphasize the architectural beauty of the home. As a foundation for the new siding, we first installed our rain screen system. The proactive rain screen keeps moisture at

bay, with technology that sheds most of the rain and manages the rest. Because any winddriven moisture drains away, condensation no longer forms behind the siding. It’s simple: by keeping exterior walls and insulation dry, moisture cannot invade and cause premature decay. The windows didn’t need replacing, and we simply wrapped them all with James HardieTM trim. And finally, we replaced the tired wood deck with AzekTM decking and railing. It’s maintenance free and fits the space perfectly. Bob and Renee, thank you for choosing Frey Construction for your siding and deck remodel. We know you’ll enjoy your beautiful and maintenancefree home—with the sounds of nature and woodpecker rata-tats on trees and not on the side of your house—for many years to come!

We recently did a feature with MomsEveryday.com. Jenn, one of our Remodeling Consultants shares her insights about some of the kitchen counter options popular today. Our team of Remodeling Consultants helps our Clients work through the endless options and pricing to find what works best for each and every budget. When it comes to choosing counter tops, the options are endless, and all amazing. What are the pros and cons of granite? Of quartz? (What’s that?) Of laminate? (I like the price of that!) Regardless of your budget, we’ll find a way to make your dream kitchen a reality! From granite to quartz to laminate, the color selections and choices accent any palette and price range. Granite Granite continues to trend as a top choice. Granite slab kitchen counters offer a look of elegance and beauty. We love the look of granite, with the different variations found in each and every piece. These counters come with a high price tag. Another drawback is the maintenance they require. Because they are a natural stone, the porous material can soak up stains. You must reseal the stone from time to time to ensure against discoloration.

Laminate Laminate kitchen counters are the most inexpensive option and offer tons of different finishes and variations. Some are made to look like natural stone, so you can have the look of stone, without the high price tag and maintenance!

“[We chose to work with you because] of excellent reviews. We are very pleased with the work. We also were pleased that Frey agreed to give us a discount on the replacement panes, since the company that had provided the “Lifetime” Warranty went out of business.” ~Terrence & Susan Millar, Madison (Glass Replacement, August 2016) “[We chose to work with you because] after the estimate we felt very confident in Frey and their work. We appreciated a true diagnosis of the problem (leaking roof/bad gutters) and the quote on the spot! [The work your company does is] spectacular! Extremely professional from Tyler quoting the project, to scheduling, and completion of roof and gutter repairs (both teams were outstanding). Thanks so much for your work, close attention to detail, and just being on top of things throughout the entire project!” ~William & Stacey Murnighan, Madison (Roof, Gutters, & Gutter Protection, September 2016) “[We chose to work with you because] of the quality work, friendly staff, and very accommodating to our schedule and pets. We will always choose Frey Construction to do our work!” ~Josh & Beth Wright, Madison (Windows, September 2016) “[I chose to work with you because] people told me you did fine work and finished on time. Also, your cost was reasonable. I was very pleased with the whole process. From planning to completion, everything went smoothly. It was better than expected. I was very happy with the new and remodeled bathrooms you did for me. The people were great to work with and the finished project is GREAT!” ~Mary Jo Sanford, Madison (Bathroom Remodel, September 2016)

Solid Surface Solid surface kitchen counters are a durable, man-made acrylic option. CorianTM is the best known brand of solid surface counters. A wide range of colors and finishes are available! One of the features of solid-surface counters is the ability to have an integrated sink, so the counter and sink are one seamless piece of material.

“[We chose to work with you because] your salesperson explained the product well and was knowledgeable about our home and gutter situation. Jason & Darrell did an efficient job of removing and installing new gutters. They were able to fix a few trouble spots, and we are very pleased with the new downspouts! Thanks for your work. We now have a rain barrel that works great!” ~Terry Gunning & Lori Guderyon, Madison (Gutters, August 2016)

Quartz Like granite, quartz is a natural stone. Unlike granite, the quartz counter is non-porous, because it’s engineered with a resin. And quartz is easy to maintain (as in no need for resealing). These days the durable quartz/engineered counter has become the #1 choice for our Clients, and companies like CambriaTM offer designs to mimic granite and other stones.

Choosing Kitchen Counters

“[We chose to work with you because] the price was right, and we both found the young lady that came first to our home was super. Everyone that we dealt with was polite, business-like, friendly, and efficient. Also, they were very neat and tidy. Thanks again.” ~Gary & Jane Rolfsmeyer, Prairie du Sac (Bathroom Remodel, June 2016)

Hail Damage or Not, We’re Here for YOU Long After the Storm We have been especially BUSY over the past month! And after 500+ hail inspections later, we’ve noted significant damage on nearly 70% of the homes we examined in and around Madison, Middleton, Cross Plains, and Verona. We came when you called! Some of our past Clients—and their friends and neighbors—were lucky to have “weathered” the storm unscathed. Meanwhile, about 20% received “light” damage, judged by most insurance companies as “normal wear and tear” of the roof’s life expectancy. Lucky for those who called for our free hail inspection, we know better! We know that roofs in our state endure harsh winter weather, and we know that “light” damage appears more evident after the freeze/thaw cycles of winter. We will be busy re-inspecting these roofs in the spring to see if the hail damage is more apparent after a Wisconsin winter. Wondering whether your home was impacted by the September storm? Give us a call! Or do you know someone in the area who is unsure about their roof? Please have them give us a call! Don’t you—or your friends and neighbors—be taken advantage of by storm chasing roofing companies that will be out of town before we know it. Did you know that some insurance companies give you only 6 months after an “event” in which to turn in a claim? And while most allow between 12 to 24 months, you’ll be wise to double-check your coverage particulars and deadlines. If it’s 6 months only, be sure to call us right away! We’ll be happy to get you on our inspection list. In fact, our teams will be inspecting roofs right up until the snow starts flying. We’ll be back at it again in the spring for those of you with 12-24 months insurance claim deadlines, and for those we already inspected and diagnosed with light damage. Not sure if your home is in the hail area? Here are a few signs to note. Are you seeing…? • A lot of other homes in your neighborhood getting a roof replaced? • Cracks or half-moon shaped chips in your siding? • Dents on the window wraps, aluminum siding and downspouts? (If from hail, these dents should be round.) • Dents in the bottom or face of your gutters? (These will appear as outward bumps/”divets” and can be seen from the ground.) All of these signs can be seen from the ground. We don’t want you going up on your roof! Doing so is dangerous, even for the most seasoned veterans. Even if you don’t see any of these signs, we’d be happy to provide a free hail inspection for you. We’ll do more than examine your roof… Our comprehensive inspection will check your gutters, windows, and siding as well. To schedule your hail inspection, simply call our office 608.643.7914 or visit our website: http://freyconstruction.com

Effects of Hail Damage on Your Home AESTHETIC HAIL DAMAGE - Aesthetic hail damage is the most common type of damage caused by hail. This occurs when hailstones hit your roof and the protective granular surface of the shingle loosens and falls off. With the granules removed, the shingle loses some of its protection, decreasing the lifespan of the roof and making it more vulnerable to additional damage. IMPORTANT to remember there is a deadline for insurance company claims – check with your insurance company on this timeframe. Aesthetic hail damage does not mean that the roof shingles need to be replaced immediately. The decrease in the shingle life expectancy varies depending on the amount of damage, the age of the shingles and a few other factors. Talk to your contractor about the time frame in which your roof should be replaced. FUNCTIONAL HAIL DAMAGE - Functional damage occurs when there is enough damage done to the shingles to either cause leaks or to significantly reduce the life of the shingle. This type of damage is recognized by major granule loss (easily visible from the ground, areas of asphalt becoming exposed) or shingle fracture/penetration which can be seen by fractures through the back of the shingle. Many factors affect the ability of the roof ‘s ability to withstand hail impact: • Size and density of the hail stones – Large heavy stones cause more severe damage. • Age of the shingles – Newer shingles are more resistant than older, as the asphalt is less brittle and better able to absorb the impact energy. • Angle of the hail impact – When hail strikes the roof at a 90° angle it’s more likely to cause shingle fractures; hail that strikes at a lesser angle is more likely to cause granule loss. • Temperature – Colder temperature will be more likely to cause fractures as asphalt is more brittle when temperatures dip. • Roof deck conditions – Solid roof decks offer better support to the shingle surface in resisting hail damage. Shingles on rotted or weak decking are more easily fractured.
