Leaps of Knowledge IMAX 3D Documentary Series
Inspired at Leaps of Knowledge with Julia Immonen I learnt that one person can bring a difference to the nation - it's whether he wants to do something to make a difference. Also, learning to work as a team is really important for us in life. // Manuela Lee, Student
My kids are fans of space science and astronomy. We are particularly interested to bring them to watch Hubble 3D. Great effort and initiative, and very valuable enrichment programmes from FrogAsia to stimulate learning outside the classroom. // Ng Wei Yang, Parent My son had a stroke at the age of 6. Because of that he has physical limitations and isn’t able to do many things other children can. With these IMAX 3D documentaries, I believe it'll cheer him up and will show him the many sights that he may not be able to experience otherwise. // Josephine Ong, Parent
Leaps of Knowledge Conference 2014 I enjoyed the introduction to
FrogAcademy at this conference. I've not seen it before and after being introduced to it, I think it's interesting. I'll definitely use it! // Radziah, MOE

Director’s Note Let’s welcome 2015, a new year for new beginnings together!
A Happy New Year to everyone! With 2015 right at our doorstep, it’s time to reflect on 2014 and start wondering, “What’s next?” Right about now, everyone is probably thinking about their New Year’s Resolutions or planning for the months ahead. That’s the beauty of the human spirit - we’re constantly looking towards the future and striving to move forwards. Here at FrogAsia, we’ve set into motion some exciting new plans, programmes and initiatives that we’re confident will help move your teaching and learning experience to even greater heights. Throughout the end of last year, we talked a lot about change. At our Leaps of Knowledge Conference 2014, teachers and parents met changemakers who are ordinary people, like you and me, but are making a difference in the classroom. This experience inspired many to start thinking of change in their own schools.
“What can be done differently? And how can we do it better? ”
It’s time to take and translate these experiences into fresh new ways to engage and inspire our students. When you start looking through the perspective of a student, it opens up many possibilities as well as the need for new ways of teaching in the classroom. Implementing new ideas is never easy. It’s normal to be uncomfortable with things that are unfamiliar, but that shouldn’t stop anyone. Our featured changemakers Dr Alice Wilder and Jaul Anak Bunyau may come from different sides of the world, but they agree on one thing if you want to usher in change, you need to be courageous and bold. No one else is going to do it. It has to be you. And so, as we review our teaching material and lesson plans this month, the questions to ask are “What can be done differently? And how can we do it better?” Find the courage to do things in a new way. Those you influence and impact will be grateful for it. God bless,
Lou Yeoh Executive Director

DR. ALICE WILDER
THE ADULT
WHO THINKS
LIKE A KID INTERVIEW BY CRYSTAL CHA
10
On paper, Dr. Alice Wilder’s achievements are impressive. Her ground-breaking work has spanned children’s programmes with respected names such as Nick Jr., Cartoon Network, PBS Kids and Amazon Kids, and she is currently the Co-Creator and Executive Producer of Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids, a financial literacy programme for 7-12 year olds that is airing on Cartoon Network Asia. Dr. Alice was also a Producer and the Director of Research and Development for the internationally-renowned Blue’s Clues, a first-of-its-kind television series that builds critical thinking skills in young children by involving them in the story. In person, Dr. Alice is warm, gentle and approachable. Her eyes sparkle with genuine excitement as she talks about her passion for seeing life through the eyes of a child. While she was in Kuala Lumpur to speak at our recent Leaps of Knowledge Conference 2014 last December, I had the privilege of spending some time with her to ask her a few questions about herself and the work that she does. Read on for some fresh, child-focused insights that you can take into the new school year as you gear up for 2015!
11
Thanks for your time Dr. Alice! Out of curiosity, how would your best friend describe you? Passionate about children and learning. I have this phrase that everyone around me knows I use all the time: “It’s all about the kids”. That has been my passion and focus in everything I do. You have so many titles, from content creator to advisor to educational psychologist. Can you tell us more about what you do? There’s two main focuses in all that I do. Firstly, everything I do relates back to education. It’s really important to know the theory behind how a child develops and learns and I use my experience in that to help writers and content creators be sure that the message they are crafting for the child will leave a lasting impact. Secondly, I want to be the adult who thinks like a kid – and bring that childlike perspective to everything I do.
I want be the adult who thinks like a KID. How can teachers, parents and just adults in general help children learn better by being more child-focused? Firstly, we don’t have to feel like we have all the answers. Adults may know the bigger picture but they may not know the ‘how’ or ‘why’ to a child’s question. It’s okay to collaborate with children to find the answers together. It’s also important to pay attention to children’s needs. When kids act out or misbehave, instead of enforcing your own beliefs on them, try to understand the root of the problem and the ‘why’ behind their behaviour.
“IT’S OKAY TO COLLABORATE WITH CHILDREN TO FIND THE ANSWERS TOGETHER.”
What are some skills the 21st century learner should possess? I think “21st century learning” is a buzzword, and it will eventually expire. The skills that people are saying that kids need to know in the 21st century are not that different from what they’ve always needed to know. Unfortunately, schools have not always pushed higher-order thinking or creative skills. It’s easier to test facts instead of skills kids really need, because schools have to show impact and results. But what the child really needs instead of just facts and figures is the passion to learn. If you can get a child to light up at a new discovery he or she has made, that child will easily develop all the other skills a 21st century learner needs: Grit. Curiosity. Creativity. Resilience. And the ability to delay gratification to achieve greater satisfaction later. It all starts with being passionate.
“It all starts with being PASSIONATE.”
How has television and technology changed the way learning can happen? Technology has changed what we need to know. I don’t need to know and memorize more facts anymore. I need to know how to think, how to process those facts. It takes curiosity, and it takes the desire to learn.

INTERVIEW BY VICTOR LAU
J A U L A N A K B U N YA U
14
As the adage goes, you should never judge a book by its cover. On the outside, Headteacher Jaul Anak Bunyau is an unassuming man with a quiet demeanour. But ask him how his school, SK Ulu Lubai, is doing and a brilliant twinkle appears in his eyes. To date, his school has won over 173 local and international awards, including the esteemed Commonwealth Education Good Practice Award and the UNESCO Wenhui Award for Educational Innovation 2011. However, for this humble Headteacher, his greatest satisfaction is being able to give his students hope for a better future. Read on as I interview this amazing changemaker about his vision to transform a secluded school into a shining example for all to follow. Hello Encik Jaul! Just to start off, tell us about more about SK Ulu Lubai and your role in this school. Hello! I have been the Headteacher of SK Ulu Lubai since 1 May 1998. It is currently attended by 30 pupils and is staffed by 13 extremely diligent teachers. It is located 65 kilometres from the border town of Limbang, placing us in the P2 (Pedalaman Dua) band. Visitors will need to drive through logging roads in a four-wheel drive, cross several rivers in a boat and then hike all the way to our school. The journey takes over 4 hours during the rainy season and anywhere between 8-12 hours during dry seasons, because the rivers are shallower. Getting to SK Ulu Lubai is definitely an adventure! What drove you to invest in improving your students? I actually set out intending to change mindsets. I’ve met people who think rural schools are backward and underperforming compared to urban schools. It was very demoralising for rural school teachers to hear that, so I decided to change it. I also believed that students, be it in rural or urban communities, had the potential to succeed and shine if given the proper guidance. Why would I not attempt to give my students the same hope of a bright future that their urban counterparts have?
“I set out intending to change mindsets.” And what did this belief lead you to do? I started the ELIS (English Language in School) programme to encourage students to brush up on their English. They were encouraged to start speaking the language wherever they were, to whoever they met. It was tough at first because the students did not speak a word of English beyond their classroom walls! Their mother tongue is Iban and second language, Bahasa Malaysia. However after two years of the ELIS programme, their command of English improved tremendously. Passing rates for English in the UPSR examinations have been 100% since 2003!
15
“I also believe that students, be it in rural or urban communities, have the potential to succeed and shine if given the proper guidance. ”
That’s amazing! But it wouldn’t have been possible without support from everyone. How was ELIS received by teachers and parents? It was great that the teachers were committed from the start. They shared the same vision of wanting to see the students succeed, so they gave their all to the programme! However, the greatest and most important support came from the parents themselves. They knew that the key to a brighter future for their children lay in education, so they provided whatever support they could give. Usually, the common hallway in our longhouses is where families congregate every night to share stories and news. Our students’ parents decided to spend this time to supervise and care for each other’s children as they conducted their revision! When I ask them why they are willing to go the extra mile to do these things, they often say that they are proud of seeing their children succeeding and having a brighter future. It gives me hope to have their support!
“The journey takes over 4 hours during the rainy season and anywhere between 8-12 hours during dry seasons.”
Lastly, what advice would you give to headteachers who are thinking of bringing change to their schools? Change is a scary thing - the old ways are always the most comfortable and familiar. However we need to be brave and take the leap, otherwise in this 21st century, we’ll be slowly left behind. So make changes where necessary, find out new ways of doing things and adapt technology to help improve the lives of your teachers and students!
“Make our children want to run to school and walk home from it.”

Teh Tarik T ime! I tried saving a recently built Frog Site and the froghead loading page went on forever. I have been using Frog VLE for awhile and this is the first time this happened. Is it my laptop?
I find it hard to get my students or fellow teachers excited about the Frog VLE in my school. Any tips on getting them to pick this up?
Hello Cikgu! Frog is browser dependant and not affected by your device’s operating system, so it’s not your computer’s problem. Sometimes a Frog Site takes a long time to save (or load) because it has a lot of pictures or videos attached to it. We recommend trying to reduce the number of media added to the site to help ease the amount of data that needs to be loaded.
We understand that it’s tough to implement something this big at one go, so we recommend doing it in small waves. Get classes who are not sitting for national exams (like Form 1 and Form 4) started on Frog first.
Sometimes it also depends on how heavily used your Internet connection is. Make sure that not many others are using that connection at the same time! Have more questions or problems? Call our Support Team at 018 - 799 8787
I’m having trouble in teaching my class effectively because the school doesn’t have enough Chromebook devices! Any advice? Yours is a question we get a lot, and we’re happy to say there are many ways to solve this! Encourage your students to share one Chromebook with their classmates. Not only does this make it easier for you to start class discussions, students will enjoy guiding each other through the parts of the lesson that is hard to understand. You can also gather your students into groups with a few Chromebooks per group. Get them to start discussions on an article, solve a math problem or conduct a science experiment. Put your group work lesson plans into Frog and your students will find it easier to access the information in case they want to do revision or write notes down! In fact, why not use your school’s Chromebooks out of the lab? Check out how SMK Puchong implemented such an exercise HERE.
We also recommend that a support system be created so that teachers have a reliable source of information to go to. Identify core teachers that are good with the Frog VLE (it could even be you) and designate them as mentors. Open up the computer lab during free periods or after school and assign your mentors to these sessions, so that your teachers have a place to go to ask questions and get solutions to their Frog VLE problems. Lastly, the Learn Centre is a great central resource for the Frog VLE. There are many tutorial videos and helpful guides to the various functions, widgets and apps that will surely answer your questions! You can access the Learn Centre HERE.

Maximise student outcomes for every ringgit
Make classes more engaging, cater to a wider range of learning skills, develop higher order thinking skills (HOTS) through technology
Shift from “school learning” to “system learning” by engaging parents, the community, as well as the private and social sectors as partners in supporting student learning
Allocate education budget to the priorities set out in the blueprint, and away from lower impact initiatives; track and report the captured ROI for every initiative, with further investment conditional of having delivered improved outcomes
