A Note... Dear reader, How has 2016 been for you? We hope you’ve started your teaching and learning year with reimagination. Let’s keep filling our classroom spaces with exploration and wonder! We at FrogAsia are delighted to bring you the eleventh issue of the Lilypad as you journey further into your school year. As we have just said hello to 2016, we throwback to Leaps of Knowledge: The Classroom Reimagined or #leaps15. Hundreds of educators with dreams of ever-inspiring classrooms and a passion for engaging their students came together at JW Marriott, Kuala Lumpur. Together on the 31st of October, they embarked on a journey to rediscover teaching and learning, and formulate practical classroom approaches that they could take back to their own school. Educators from every state in the nation joined in, and you can see their happy faces throughout this magazine, on an adventure to cause change in the classroom. We learned that change isn’t always about moving mountains in a day - it doesn’t have to be about doing many different things in the classroom - but about doing things differently, or reimagination.

CATHY DAVIDSON PROJECT CLASSROOM MAKEOVER The journey through doing things differently starts with an inspiring talk from our first keynote speaker, Cathy Davidson, a renowned educationalist and recipient of the 2016 Ernest L. Boyer Award. With Students Centered Learning being the core of her talk, Cathy starts by asking, “What happens to students after school had stopped? What can we do to make our classrooms help prepare students for after the education is over?” Cathy then pointed out one very crucial point; the classrooms we have today look pretty much the same as a classroom from 1993, when the Internet was invented. This certainly sums up the whole point of the conference; to rethink how we do things in schools today!

Even without technology, the ability to interact is the single most important thing in the world we live in now.

We have to prepare our students for interaction. Frog is certainly one fantastic system which allows you to structure participation.

Learning facts for a test is important for passing the test of course but only
We must learn to read closely and critically, in order to be good citizens in a society where the facts will constantly change, where the information keeps expanding more and more rapidly. The emphasis must fall back onto what to do with
those facts and on how to ask the questions that change which facts are important.

Where does creative thinking come from? In the authors I publish I find that one place creative thinking comes from is an opportunity to see from multiple perspectives. The same phenomena are seen or heard or understood differently around the world, and by different people in the same country.

imagine a solution to a problem that no one has thought about yet.

When we measure learning by testing, we are too frequently looking for the mastery of a set of facts which will change. What we want to be doing
is encouraging the thinking that moves along with the facts and is able to interpret new circumstances. Because they always arrive.

Encouraging creative thinking does not mean abandoning standards for good, smart work.

A great work of literature or an important piece of history is not going to be replaced in the same way. But there are always new histories and new novels; one learns about new cultures or sees art one has never imagined. For each of these one
needs flexible tools; the way to see and understand that is not tied to knowing one set of objects but is open to all the worlds’ futures. This
can begin in our own classrooms, and it begins by thinking differently.
SHOWTIME To best showcase how we might reimagine teaching and learning and learning spaces, we had a series of Showtimes. Each Showtime in it’s own way, was designed to help you see practical ways to elevate your classrooms into 21st-century learning. In a Frog Classroom, it’s all about doing things differently! Teachers opened their minds to different teaching and learning methods in this section with a unique twist: here the students were the ones conducting the class. Few teachers have not heard of Frog Connected Classrooms. We gathered in an exciting session to witness how you, in your own classroom, can connect with other schools and educators anywhere in the world! With Lightning Talks, teachers took part in a quick and active exchange of best practices by teachers who have successfully powered their classrooms with the Frog VLE.

We searched across the country to find the educators who seek challenges and discover opportunities at every turn. From Borneo to the Peninsula, six brave teachers powered by the Frog VLE took on the challenge of quick storytelling at our Lightning Talks. One thing was clear from the bite-sized delivery of these best practices: It really isn’t about the technology but what you do with it have makes the difference. Your teaching and learning ideas are what makes the Frog VLE your powerful tool, inside and outside the classroom. From direct teaching, to students directing their own learning to students collaborating with cooperative learning, our Lightning Talks were full of insight and fuel to power your own reimagined classroom! Let’s explore what they talked about.

TAN LEE YIN
It’s about getting them curious What really gets students ticking? This is the curiosity that launched Ms Tan quest into storytelling with the Frog VLE. Using her Site, Ms Tan showed us how she stimulates interest with the right materials, curates information collaboratively with the class, and encourages discussion. Once there is interest, a classroom can become a hub of engagement. With collaboration, even the less vocal students get more exposure. Giving students autonomy, she believes, builds their confidence.
JACKSON SIGA
Your toolkit to build a 21st Century School 21st-Century Learning is a key component of the Malaysian Education Blueprint, and schools across the country are transforming themselves for the future. Mr Siga tackled the challenges of change head-on as he shared strategies to elevate our schools. With a clear model in mind, and a checklist as a guide, Mr Siga showed us how he approached doing things differently. Besides the physical classroom space, Mr Siga demonstrated how with his initiative AnuraQuest, he used the FrogVLE to build a digital encyclopedia with user-generated content. This project promotes mastery learning, which prioritises the learning curve of the student.

Launch your students’ imaginations Did you know that you can embed a 360 Google Street view of Angkor Wat and thousands of other places in the world? En Fadzil does, and has been using Google Street View to power curiosity of his students! A keen promoter of Higher Order Thinking Skills (KBAT), En Fadzil focuses on why students are bored, lose focus and feel limited. With the help of the Forum Widget and a nifty embed code, En Fadzil showed us how he used the Frog VLE to launch students’ imagination and make learning truly exciting!

Give your stress wings and let it fly away How do you get improved attendance and confident, independent learners? Ms Pathma and Ms Jothi showed us how a change in approach transformed their students’ lives. Their strategy: gamification. By using leaderboards, progress reports and personalised learning, students did not stop trying in their tests, and a healthy sense of competition grew in the classroom. With the Frog VLE, students took learning outside the physical classroom, spending plenty of time practising outside school hours - and they were excited about it!

FROG CLASSROOM Three lessons were conducted by students with teachers forming the classroom! These sessions were designed specifically to flip our thainking surrounding teaching and learning. According to Jerome Bruner, a world-renowned psychologist who has made significant contributions to educational psychology, 21st century-learners are powered by collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. Is it possible for students to take charge and power their own learning? We think so!

Participants explored Discovery Learning when the student facilitator presented on the solar system (Science, Year 4).
Participants explored a form of learning called Camouflage Learning, where students learn by doing activities in which they feel like they are ‘playing’.
Discovery Learning has students taking an active role in learning. When learning is process-based rather than fact-based, students can jump in and understand at their own pace. When asked to present, students will rely on their communication skills and they also need to learn a new concept. To prepare for a presentation, they might explore the processes behind the topic by discussing and problem-solving.
They were introduced to gamification elements such as a leaderboard, status bar and avatars - all of which work together to show the students how far they need to go to win! We also explored how to get students to earn points through classroom criteria like attitude, academic performance and submission of homework!
Participants explored Blended Learning, which has students of different levels of understanding spending more individual time with their teacher in a classroom setting.
It is important to update the students on their progress often, and you can work with other teachers to implement leaderboards in their classes, making the challenge even more fun!
Students were divided into two groups and placed at two stations, a reading stations and a writing station. In this session, students focused on storytelling content (English, Year 4). When groups are smaller and have time with and without the teacher, students have more control over their learning pace. With the more controlled pace, teachers can both encourage students to be more engaged and provide individual attention to students with challenges.

Geared to reimagine your classroom, we welcomed you to Frog Connected Classrooms (FCC), a series of interactive and curiosity-sparking webinars where with just one click, your students will have the chance to connect and collaborate with other schools.

THE REIMAGINED CHALLLENGE The ultimate goal of The Reimagined Challenge was to unlock as many Frog classroom chairs and tables as possible, through collective effort. The four challenges definitely challenged participants’ creativity and boosted up their stamina - ending the day on a joyous note when Adenan bin Morad from SK Seri Iskandar, Perak took home 16 tables and 41 chairs!

Teacher’s Workshops Reimagining Teaching and Learning The teaching and learning world is abuzz with gamification! Why? For 21st-century learning to take place, 4C’s must be present in lessons: collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity. At Leaps of Knowledge: The Classroom Reimagined, we decided to reimagine lessons as you know them, AND reimagine the workshop session itself! The most involved and dynamic experience at the entire conference happened within eight rooms filled with participants. PANEL In a panel discussion moderated by Datin Kathleen Chew Wai Lin of the YTL Foundation, our keynote speaker was joined by three distinguished panel speakers to discuss issues and inspiration surrounding the evolution of learning space and approaches.
I believe that a reimagined classroom is one which is fluid. Fluid in the sense that the teacher and student’s roles can move. A teacher doesn’t necessarily have to be the fountain of knowledge and wisdom. Today, we recognize that our students come to us with
knowledge. They come with this “little backpack” of everything they need to know, and we need to “unpack” that for them in the classroom, and not just fill in more stuff. A reimagined classroom should enable fluidity, where teachers can be students and students can be teachers.

As a teacher myself, it is very important to have all the basic technological equipments to support blended learning. But if teachers are still adapting traditional way of teaching and refuse to incorporate group activities, collaboration and maximising the usage of technology, there won’t be any progress. Today we are going to take a peek into one of the biggest issues of these past few decades.
CLEAN WATER & SANITATION WATER. Why is water worth more than anything? Clean water means health but on the other hand water can also mean death. Diseases as cholera, dysentery, typhus and others spread through unclean water. Each day 6000 people lose their lives because of the lack of clean water; 4 people a minute.

The last years have seen many more people gaining access to clean water. Nevertheless, 2.5 billion people still do not have access to clean water and sanitation. The fact is that 1.1 billion people do not even have access to a proper toilet. In 2000, 189 leaders of countries around the world signed the “Millennium Declaration� - an initiative by the United Nations. This initiative made sure that the countries would make changes to achieve certain goals in 15 years because not everything changed in the way we imagined they would by 2015. That is one of the reasons for the new initiative by the United Nations: called Global Goals. Water is on the list. We might ask ourselves: Is clean water important to me? What might you do to ensure that by 2030 everyone has access to clean water and sanitation?
What can you do about it? You might feel that your voice may not be heard in your corner - but what if you lent your voice to something bigger! With the help of many organisations around the world you can help to make this world a better place, providing clean water for the people in need in our own nation and around the world. Of course, you can also raise money, work with your friends or donate personally. A quick donation to a charity organisation of your choice or come up with something creative! Bake cakes and sell them, organise a sponsored event, make music on the streets. It could be anything!

Why is proper nutrition great for students?
Can I help? Creating a supportive environment for better nutrition can be fun. Make building a healthy diet something fun and exciting. Imagine a Youtube session, a Hangout Session, a Frog VLE Site, where you can get your teachers and classmates on board.
We all know that having the right diet aids in the development of our growth. We also know that when you eat healthily, it reduces the chance of developing diabetes, obesity and chronic diseases. Just as importantly though, proper nutrition helps you have a more efficient time at school! A balanced diet consists of fiber, fat, protein and carbohydrates, making you less likely to fall ill and miss out on classes. As a result, the amount of interruptions on schoolwork over the year and in learning will be reduced. There will also be fewer disruptions in classes since you will become more focused, creating a more pleasant learning environment for every student.

Have a good breakfast every morning Research has shown that not having breakfast decreases scholastic achievements. May it happen that you are late for school, grab at least some juice or a piece of fruit.
Trade unhealthy snacks for healthy ones Apart from eating vegetables, eat dried or fresh fruit, rice cakes, whole wheat crackers, low-fat yoghurt, or unbuttered popcorn instead of snacks with a high level of fat such as fried food.

Choose food that are rich in calcium
You need sugar to provide the needed amount of calories but make sure not to take too much of it. Sweetening coffee, cereal, fruit and tea with honey is a better option.
Calcium needs to be built up in your body before you reach your early twenties in order to prevent osteoporosis. Low-fat yoghurt, green leafy vegetables and low-fat cheese are also full of calcium.

Drink lots of water It is important to drink a minimum of eight classes each day, depending on how much you exercise. Bring water bottles to class to stay hydrated and concentrated.

REIMAGINING ROBOTS:
Young and bright Malaysians take on robotics
For the fifth time in seven years, Malaysian high school students have beaten 43 other countries at the 12th World Robot Olympiad in Qatar with robots they designed and programmed, made primarily out of plastic LEGO blocks. Although they were submitted for the competition, these robots were built from scratch to save lives!
SMK USJ 4 won a Gold Medal for a robot that automatically activates a gas mask on miners when dangerous gasses are detected.
3,000 young robot enthusiasts attended this competition one month ago, 57 of them being Malaysian high school students. The hard working Gold Medal winners were YC Adventure Kidz from SJK(C) Yuk Chai in the Open Primary School category, and the Robotist team from SMK USJ 4 in the Open Lower Secondary Category. The third gold medal was won by the Kota Kinabalu Mara Junior Science College in the robotic football match. Most impressively, 3 students from
Did you hear about the Copiapo mining disaster in 2010? This lifesaving robot has a GoPro camera with 360° view of the mine and a GPS that detects miners’ location. One thing is certain, we’ll hear a lot more from these promising Malaysian scientists as they aim to continue to reimagine robots!
WHY DID THEY BUILD IT?
EDUCATION MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND: Amnesty’s International Student Group in the Netherlands. A global movement of more than 7 million people worldwide, Amnesty International is campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. Amnesty International has student organisations across the globe - and one of them is “Amnesty Student Group Nijmegen” (AISN). Almost 70 students come together to strive for a better world with opportunities for everyone. Through lectures, workshops debates and more they try to create awareness surrounding human rights and other global issues. The student group is lead by a board of directors and 7 commissions. One of these is the Right2Education commision.
Every year for 1 week, awareness around education is created by these students. Recently, one of their campaigns was focused on Palestine, where not every child is able to go to school due to instability in the region. Any student can join the AISN. Not only are they a student group creating awareness on all kind of global issues, they also host social events.
When we do meaningful work, it is wonderful to be able to relax together, too.
