Welcome to our 8th issue
Welcome to our very special Leaps of Knowledge edition of The Lilypad! As you can probably tell by our cover, we are partnering with St Anne’s College, University of Oxford on an exciting collaboration. Yes, we have over 20 professors from the University of Oxford down in Kuala Lumpur for a week to introduce as many Malaysians as possible to the range of options open to them at university. We’d like to raise their aspirations to get into a top university like Oxford. It is exciting that 175 students have the opportunity to attend Summer School Kuala Lumpur with St. Anne’s College, University of Oxford, a four-day exploration of subjects taught in the University of Oxford. Designed to give students a more practical, hands-on experience through lectures and experiments by professors from the University, the sessions can help them determine their interest in these subjects or relevance to their future careers.

Hello pasukan Teh Tarik!

PERLIS SK Berseri has proved that teamwork plays a big role in implementing technology in school. The school’s Head Teacher has made it a point to sit down with the school’s Frog Admin to learn how to use Frog and to brainstorm ideas so that they can implement Frog school-wide.
“Since Frog is a fairly new learning platform, teachers are responsible to create a strong base to implement the platform among students. Students do not have the capability to realise the vision, teachers do.”
Jafri Othman Head Teacher
In order to make sure Frog started being used widely in school, SK Berseri’s Frog Admins took the initiative to make the school’s computer lab available after school hours to train other teachers how to use the Frog VLE.

“I am proud with the cooperation given by teachers and students, especially the Frog Admins. They have shown tremendous effort in implementing technology in teaching and learning. We will keep on striving to increase the usage of technology in this school.”
As the school’s Frog Admins, we not only need to make sure teachers and students get the opportunity to utilise technology and Frog, but we also feel responsible to set positive examples for them. - Mimi Irma Abdul Wahid, Frog Admin
When a school wishes to initiate a program, the school’s leader holds the important role in sharing knowledge with the teachers in that particular school or in other schools. - Maryani Roseli, Frog Admin
We’re excited to share how Frog is powering 21st century-learning all across Malaysia. These 15 stories provide a snapshot, but there are plenty more. KEDAH SK Bukit Jenun is a rural school in Gurun, Kedah with a small student population. Despite its remote location, every teacher in the school engages in 21st century teaching with Frog.
8
“The majority of our parents cannot afford computers in the home, so the school feels a responsibility to provide students with these facilities. We want to inspire them to gain computer skills.”
SK BUKIT JENUN
With students from SK Jenun, the initial challenge came in when trying to implement technology in homes where parents were not sure they could not provide their children with access to computers.
Ustaz Amir Hamzah Teacher
Upon receiving their Chromelab (41 Google Chromebooks and a charging chart) from the Ministry of Education, SK Jenun’s ICT teachers made the effort to utilise Frog in their teaching and learning efforts. Supported by the school’s leadership team, teachers began to use widgets on Frog to add videos and to create their own personalised quizzes.
18
“I love using Frog because it is fun and brings joy.” Nur Fatihah Student
As one of Frog’s top users, the school is often asked to mentor other schools on how to best use Frog so that they, too, can transform themselves. The school’s Frog Admin, Kasmawati Kasim, was even nominated by the Gurun District Education Office to become a Frog Trainer for the entire territory, with the responsibility of engaging other schools in Gurun in the use of Frog. Having had the opportunity to host visitors from Thailand and Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG), visitors who wanted to learn about the implementation of Frog in Malaysian schools have been impressed by SK Jenun’s efforts. The school continues to proudly champion 21st century learning.
“SK Jenun is a rural school where students are not exposed to technology. The introduction of Frog provides a stepping stone for students to better expose themselves to the world. I am proud to inspire teachers to successfully use Frog in school.”
Kasmawati Kassim Frog Admin

KELANTAN SMK DATO’ AHMAD MAHER
With one of the school’s niche areas being Information and Communications Technology (ICT), teachers and students of SMK Dato’ Ahmad Maher have worked together to make their learning journey fun and informative. With a group of dedicated teachers volunteering their time to mentor others and provide support, the majority of the school’s lessons are now facilitated on Frog.
Full support of this initiative was felt when all senior teachers in the school decided to implement Frog in their classes. The entire teaching body agreed to do the same, and began to share their methods of implementing Frog in class. Some spent their own personal time showing other teachers the more technical aspects of using Frog. Even though there were times that they did not quite understand how to use certain tools, they were able to inspire and help each other. Together, they energised the school’s teaching and learning platform (PdP) program.
The school began to take the initiative to organise carnivals for neighbouring schools, to share teaching and learning methods that they have customised with Frog in mind. This idea has also been adopted by Kelantan’s State Education Department (Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri) in order to further drive the use of Frog in schools all over Kelantan.
“SMK Dato’ Ahmad Maher is a renowned ‘smart school’ which widely uses ICT in their teaching. As a Head Teacher, I want to ensure that every teacher is involved in combining ICT to their syllabus, especially Frog.”
Mohd Fauzi Mamat
The school had hosted a workshop for teachers from different schools so that students from respective schools will have the opportunity to explore Frog and eventually improve their examination results. - Norhanani Abdul Ghani, Frog Admin
20
Principal
Since Frog was introduced, the learning process in SMK Dato’ Ahmad Maher has moved further away from textbook based learning, and now leans towards interactive learning experiences.
“In my opinion, Frog has driven me to become a leader. I have the chance to administrate the usage of Frog and help out in any matters regarding Frog.”
Khairul Afif Azizan Student, Frog Champion
2
“I’m confident that Frog is able to change the ways of teaching and learning because we know that the usage of Frog is very beneficial in classes.”
Abdul Rahim Idris Frog Admin

TERENGGANU It all began in SM Sains Sultan Mahmud when a teacher discovered Frog’s assignment feature, which allows her to send homework to her students in just a few clicks. Understanding that Frog helped her to be more efficient and effective as a teacher, she started the ball rolling in this coastal school.
“By using the Internet in class, my students are more excited to learn. I teach Pendidikan Agama Islam and the usage of Frog has made the subject more fun and engaging. Because of that, I am now my students’ favourite ustazah!”
SM SAINS SULTAN MAHMUD
All students need to do is to log in to Frog and complete their assignments. As the questions are automatically marked, students get their scores instantly and get immediate feedback. Assigning students holiday homework which was once such a chore for teachers at SM Sains Sultan Mahmud, is not something they dread. In fact, interested students have motivated teachers further. With less time spent on marking, teachers can concentrate on what they do best: teaching.
Rusni Abdullah Frog Admin
When I receive assignments from my teacher, I get to complete them wherever I want.- say, when I am in my hometown or my dormitory. I also get to submit my assignment without any hassle. Frog definitely encourages out of classroom learning. - Mardhiah Mamat, Student
24
PULAU PINANG SMK ABDULLAH MUNSHI
“Frog enables students to learn using the abundance of knowledge from the Internet. This creates an opportunity for them to learn anytime, anywhere. I strongly believe that Frog is able to transform today’s teaching and learning.”
Nazrunnisa Mydin Frog Admin
SMK Abdullah Munshi has a team of dedicated teachers who use Frog in their daily routine in school; from managing administration to teaching and learning. As an early adopter of Frog, the school began implementing Frog in their school in 2012.
“I love technology and I think ICT is really important due to the fact that our country is evolving day by day. For a bright future, students need to be brave enough to explore the usage of technology in learning.”
Mohd Zulfitri Zulkifli Frog Champion, Student
One of the ways they have implemented the use of Frog is to create 'Holiday Packages' whereby teachers assign homework during the school holidays using the assignment feature on Frog. This began in 2012 and is still practiced today. They have found that this has increased their student’s interest in completing work. Students who don't really like doing homework seem to enjoy doing it on Frog during the school holidays as it is quick and easy to complete homework and send it back to their teacher to mark and for feedback.
I am more focused in learning when using Frog. All I have to do is switch on my laptop and I can complete my homework. It is fun, convenient and easy to use. In my opinion, Frog is the right tool in helping to shape students’ minds to be more competitive and creative. - Firdaus Ismail, student
25
PERAK SJK(C) SAM TET
In SJK(C) Sam Tet, teachers creatively use Frog to help students revise the lessons that they learn in school. They do this by providing questions about their lessons on the forums embedded in Sites on Frog. Students are asked to answer them from home as a means of revision.
The school also receives overwhelming support from parents. Ever since the school began to implement Frog in teaching and learning, parents have jumped in to help in any way they can. They help their children print out study references from Frog and allow their children to use devices at home to complete their homework.
For students who do not have devices at home, the school has built a Chromelab housing 41 Google Chromebooks and a charging chart received from the Ministry of Education. This room is right next to the school entrance, a convenient pick up and drop off spot, so parents often send their children back to school after school hours to complete their homework. As a result, SJK(C) Sam Tet has seen an increase in student engagement in school.
“IT is a very important element when it comes to educating young children. This is because they need to be able to absorb a lot of knowledge at a very fast pace. Using the old ways of teaching no longer work. We are in the era where learning also happens out of the classroom.”
Loke Yuen Choong Frog Admin
When we access the internet, knowledge is really unlimited and it broadens students’ view of the world. This is one of the many reasons why we really need innovative learning. - Khoo Oi Ling, Head Teacher
26
WILAYAH PERSEKUTUAN KUALA LUMPUR Welcome to SJK(C) Choong Wen, Kuala Lumpur, a school that uses Frog to power student learning, especially beyond school walls and even beyond Malaysia’s borders.
“We are now known as a ‘digital school’ all over Malaysia. Our students have been interacting with a sister school, Clatford Primary School in the United Kingdom. This has been very beneficial, as they have improved in their ability to converse in English.”
SJK(C) CHOONG WEN
Choong Wen has championed the use of the English Language. Connecting with schools throughout the country, as well as in the United Kingdom and the United States, students use Hangouts and the Frog to engage in 21st century learning.
2
Wong Shee Fatt Head Teacher
Students are now more confident in speaking English, and are actively asking and answering questions in the classroom. Success has been possible with effort and heart pouring in from three corners: Mr Wong Shee Fatt, the school’s Head Teacher, Ms Tan Shin Yee, the school’s Frog Admin and an energised group of parents who provide constant support Being in a large school with almost 50 students in each class meant that it was a challenge to give students equal attention and gain insight into the way they think.
“Ours is a Chinese vernacular school. Our students were not really keen on speaking English - but with this programme, it is obvious that the students are very excited.”
Tan Shin Yee Frog Admin
With Frog, teachers can now collect information and answers from their students, leading to better interaction. They can now give feedback to not only the most vocal ones in class, but to all of them, even the quieter or shy ones.
27
SELANGOR “As a leader, I work to ensure that teachers use Frog as a new method of teaching, to attract students to learning.” - Noorhisham Juhari, Frog Admin “Cooperation and collaboration between the school and the MOE (Ministry of Education) can make Frog a success. Through this, students throughout the country are able to receive good exposure to technology.”
SK BANDAR RINCHING
- Khairuddin Mohamad, Frog Admin
SK Bandar Rinching’s enthusiasm for 21st century learning is obvious. No stone is left unturned, as the school works to manage online registration for its clubs and societies so that the administration of all extra curricular activities are running smoothly. SK Bandar Rinching also carries out Frog awareness campaigns all the time, especially before the beginning of a school year.
“To achieve anything in life, first of all we have to have to courage to change. Secondly, we must not be afraid to change. These two combination is the key to success.”
Mohd Hanif Zaimar Frog Admin
“I encourage my classmates to use Frog because it allows us to work better in a team and we get to share our opinions and ideas.”
Wan Muhammad Wan Rusli Student
Inspired by the many Leaps of Knowledge conferences (organised by FrogAsia) that he has attended, Mohd Hanif Zaimar constantly promotes Frog in teaching and learning on his social media outlets, seeing himself as a changemaker. The effects are seen and felt in SK Bandar Rinching. This school organises special Frog refresher training sessions for teachers five days before school starts again and provides all teachers and students with easily-downloadable Back-to-School packs to ensure a smooth start to the new year.
28
NEGERI SEMBILAN SMK TAMAN TUANKU JAAFAR
The main purpose of creating the kiosk was so that students with no access to devices at home could come to the kiosk to complete their assignments during recess, free periods or even after school. Initially called Laman Siber, the space was previously set aside as an ICT area.
The students of SMK Taman Tuanku Jaafar have easy access to Frog within their school. With a focus on driving learning through ICT, the school has set up a kiosk in the school with devices for students to use.
We do not limit the usage of the platform to only teaching and learning sessions in class. Parents’ involvement has always been one of our main objectives, therefore we conducted night classes for them. The parents would attend the classes to show their support.
3
Kalilah Kudri Frog Admin
“We need to ensure our students are prepared for global challenges, especially as we become a developed nation.” ““The ICT project initiated by the government is very good and we need to support them in order to achieve our goals. Parents nowadays are knowledgeable, they know the kind of education system that they want for their kids.””
Omar Ahmad
The school’s approach has increased the sense of togetherness surrounding the use of Frog. Students now find learning so much more convenient, and parents are also able to keep an eye on their children’s progress.
Principal
Greater visibility to parents has strengthened the parent-teacher relationship and increased school’s sense of community. As a mother, I am able to obtain my child’s progress in school via Frog. - Nor Azah Abdullah Sani, Parent
29
MELAKA
SMK ISKANDAR SHAH
SMK Iskandar Shah is a school which has taken a step-by-step approach with Frog, and is now reaping the fruits of change. Their Principal, Haji Zolkaply Yunus, is a strong believer in the use of technology in education, and has been closely monitoring the progress of his teachers and students in adapting to Frog.
Embracing Frog has enhanced teaching and learning as well as administration in SMK Iskandar Shah. It has become a part of the school’s standard procedures and culture - and this is due in no small part to Haji Zolkaply. Sharing ideas and thinking of ways to use Frog with his teachers is now his passion.
“In school, we use Frog ninety percent of the time. We submit homework on Frog and it’s also a platform for us to receive any announcements.”
Badrina Rizwad Irawan Student
“I always remind the teachers that we must always have proper strategies to seek opportunities. Now that we have a facility in Frog, we have to utiliisze it as best we can.”
Tuan Haji Zolkaply bin Yunus Principal
Without leadership, there is no transformation. In the initial stages, before he convinced his teachers to hop on board, Haji Zolkaply familiarised himself with Frog. He found Frog easy to learn and so, encouraged teachers to explore the platform, too. Now, the teachers of SMK Iskandar Shah collaborate on planning lessons and activities for their classes, and Haji Zolkaply works to mentor other schools in the community in the use of Frog.
30
Indeed, his belief that there are so many possibilities with Frog as a platform encourages his teachers to collaborate and learn from each other - which is why SMK Iskandar Shah is able to go further and further with their efforts.
“Our school’s Principal has two key characteristics that are rarely found. One, he is fluent in the use of IT - that is a great advantage. Second, is his ability to enforce and administrate at an advanced level.”
Abu Kasim Mohd Jani Teacher
JOHOR SK SEDENAK
The school needed solutions for easier communication and collaboration between students, teachers and parents. To meet the need, the school worked to fully utilise the resources available to them. With the efforts of the school’s Frog Admin, Afifah Arifin, and a group of supportive teachers, personal devices were brought to school.
Despite a lack of equipment and resources, SK Sedenak was able to utilise Frog as a platform to introduce technology to its students. When 4G connectivity and Frog was introduced in the school, they had few electronic devices.
“Learning with Frog is very interesting. This provides a great opportunity for parents to be affiliated with IT.”
Siti Norkiah Mohd Ishak Student’s Mother
Teachers were able to carry out lessons using Frog by setting up these devices in the library with the school’s only projector. Through cooperation and a willingness to try new things, the school began to engage in 21st century learning.
“Our school has been transformed into a focal point for many different schools regarding Frog.”
Afifah Arifin Frog Admin
32
The impact of their work spread beyond the walls of the school. In recognition of their efforts, Johor’s State Education Department (Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri) has invited the school to present their best practices to various schools in Malaysia.
“The government has spent millions to provide these facilities. Why not welcome it with open arms? I work with the teachers daily. It is compulsory for teachers to use Frog in the classroom. The administrator’s role is key here, which is why I am actively involved. We have to stay positive.”
Nor’ani Sarbini Head Teacher
“When I first saw the potential for this, I was truly grateful for our school’s administration. Pn Nor’ani is such an innovative Head Teacher, as she is open to the transformation of education.”
Sakinah Idrus
3
Teacher
To anyone who meets them, it is immediately obvious that these teachers are changemakers. They believe that with passion, excitement and enthusiasm, everything is possible. Indeed, by adopting this mindset, everyone becomes a leader. All are encouraged to take charge and overcome their own limitations.
33
PAHANG SK PEKAN JAYA
SK Pekan Jaya has long been supportive of the use of ICT in lessons. Prior to the introduction of Frog, SK Pekan Jaya used various third-party applications, programmes and blogs, all of different platforms, making it difficult to manage all resources.
Frog has simplified things for SK Pekan Jaya, serving as a central platform where teachers are now able to compile materials in one location and access everything at once. This has made teaching with technology so much easier and more convenient.
“Teachers are encouraged to be innovative by creating Sites on Frog. In my opinion, Frog is very efficient and user friendly, making it possible for us to spend more time engaging with our students.”
Mohd Hafiz Haznil Safi Teacher
“In order to be more innovative, students need to gain more knowledge and share information with their classmates.”
Hajah Ummi Kalthum Abu Bakar Head Teacher
Teachers are better able to focus on engaging students instead of juggling multiple programmes, applications and websites. Frog has also helped the school’s administrative team to manage their records better.
Previously, they used to print out administration books but now they are able to put everything onto a Site on Frog. Teachers can easily access the material whenever they need to without much hassle, and students have embraced this change wholeheartedly.
I use Frog to search for study materials that have been prepared for us by our teachers. - Qistina Balqis Dzulkafli, student

WILAYAH PERSEKUTUAN LABUAN SM SAINS LABUAN
Despite the difficulties that come with being located in a rural area, SM Sains Labuan is an extraordinary school that embraced Frog in the spirit of collaboration and connection. SM Sains Labuan has long been focused on using innovative methods to create a holistic schooling experience. The connectivity that technology has now brought them has elevated teaching and learning within the school, and has created opportunities for organising and implementing partnership projects with other schools.
With Frog and the introduction of the 1BestariNet project, virtual learning has been made possible for students of SM Sains Labuan. Teachers too are able to connect and communicate with teachers from other schools in Malaysia. Nordiane Nordin, the school’s Frog Admin and Norfadzillah Chin are both teachers who labour to give students exposure through the use of technology.
By organising virtual career talks and mystery hangouts, they are able give their students access to people who do not necessarily turn up at their school’s doorstep.
Technology creates a borderless environment. Sharing ideas, exchanging experiences and tips on how to learn between the students of different schools - all of this is now at the tips of our fingers. - Norfadzillah Chin, Teacher

In using Frog, we have seen a significant improvement in our students. With growing knowledge and this innovative approach, students are able to really comprehend the subjects they learn. - Nordiane Nordin, Frog Admin
With their newfound confidence, students are now more comfortable with conversing in English. Engaging in conversations and activities beyond the classroom has inspired the students of SM Sains Labuan to ‘dream big’. The students now take greater ownership of their learning experience and actively engage in discussions with their friends.
With technology and Frog, communication in school is faster and more effective in school than ever. We feel less awkward now. Rather, we are confident when we meet with others. - Mohd Haykal Adli, Student
Frog and Google Hangouts means that students in SM Sains Labuan are updated with current events, and are not left behind. - Kimiko Faith Jackson, Student

SABAH SK PENDIDIKAN KHAS
SK Pendidikan Khas in Tuaran is a school for hearing impaired students. The school’s Frog Admin, Haris Abbas has been using Frog as a platform for teaching and learning, engaging his students by introducing lessons and quizzes. The students are excited to use visuals like videos and animations, which better meet their learning needs.
“The students are so excited to learn with technology. They like to watch videos about successful people who are hearing impaired. They get inspired.” “The usage of technology enables students to explore interesting visuals and other learning resources that can motivate them to learn better.”
Arthur Bangguan Teacher
Madjaie B. Lomtas Head Teacher
“Students are excited when few teachers set up collaboration sessions with students from mainstream schools. These collaborations make them feel that they are on the same level and are able to achieve what any student can achieve. They are also more confident when communicating.”
Haris Abbas Frog Admin
Haris truly believes that technology removes barriers to learning as it allows the students to focus on their strengths. He uses quizzes to teach Mathematics, and has students answer multiple choice questions on Frog.
Students feel more confident when they are able to answer questions well and understand the material by watching videos instead of having their whole lesson signed out.
When I grow up I want to be a teacher. I want to help students like me gain knowledge. - Slyzaron Jines, Student
Even though I am hearing impaired, I can study like any other students in Malaysia. Thank you, Frog. - Biabana Mourus, Student

SARAWAK SMK Sri Sadong is a rural secondary school that struggles with connectivity due to its geographical location. Despite this challenge, the school realises that the most effective method of teaching with technology is first to equip themselves with as much knowledge as possible.
“Our school is located in a rural area and the Internet is not easily accessible here. However, our teachers are very passionate and determined to implement Frog in our school.”
Merali Akup Principal
SMK SRI SADONG
Motivated by their vision to give every student an opportunity to use technology, the teachers did not give up. When FrogAsia and Google introduced a series of online modules on Frog and Google Apps skills for teachers to take for Continuous Professional Development (CPD), the teachers in this school were quick to sign up and the school was the first school in Malaysia to get all its teachers to participate.
Often studying during breaks and working through lunch time, many stayed back after school hours, some till late evening just to complete the modules. At the end of two weeks of teamwork, 100% of the teachers completed the CPD modules and passed the accompanying exam with flying colours.
We are proud to say that SMK Sri Sadong is the first school in Malaysia that managed to get a 100% pass rate for CPD examinations for Frog and Google. Rasidah, Frog Admin
