How changing something changes everything Have you seen really creative lunch boxes? With just a few interesting and imaginative tweaks to a normal lunch box, lunchtime becomes even more interesting and fun for kids (and some adults as well!).

People everywhere are reimagining things such as plants, furniture, backpacks, and even cars! The act of taking something ordinary and reimagining it makes it stand out from the rest. You now have something extraordinary in your hands!

When someone is used to seeing something in a certain way, and suddenly sees it in a whole new way, this excites their senses and grabs their full attention. When a boring or repetitive pattern is broken, the mind immediately speeds up to readjust itself and is engaged for that time. A classroom is a space where learning takes place. Students are expected to give their full attention and stay interested during lessons. Can you imagine this concept of creative reimagination being applied here? We are inspired by this Japanese kindergarten designed by architect Takaharu Tezuka. He reimagined the standard kindergarten class to better engage and match the way pre-school students learn.
Takaharu Tezuka Takaharu’s kindergarten design rethinks buildings for children! It includes trees next to staircases for students to get to the next floor, very light furniture that students can rearrange and much more! To this date, he’s won 7 awards for his design! You can read more about the kindergarten at www.ideas.ted.com/inside-the-worlds-best-kindergarten/

Reimagination doesn’t need to happen on such a huge scale. Sometimes doing small things, like changing the arrangement of tables in your class or the wallpaper of your notice board, can instantly perk up the attention of your students and lift the energy in your class.
For quick and easy ideas on reimagining parts of your classroom, turn to pages 16 and 17
At Leaps of Knowledge: The Classroom Reimagined, teachers took part in fun workshops to discuss ideas to reimagine their classrooms for 21st-century learning. This brand new chance to absorb and share ideas and is a good start for you to reimagine your classroom into one that’s fun and conducive for learning! Check out what teachers learned in this workshops at the back of our magazine! 9
EDUCATOR. AUTHOR. INNOVATOR.
GET INSPIRED
at
Welcome! To kickstart our journey through doing things differently, we gather inspiration from an adventurer who has been stepping outside the box in a truly inspiring way. Meet Cathy Davidson, our keynote speaker at Leaps of Knowledge: The Classroom Reimagined, who gives us a peek into how she has reimagined areas of learning in ways you possibly haven’t thought of before. A prize-winning author, educationist, and speaker, Cathy has written and edited more than 20 books on education. Her articles are also read by thousands in Times Higher Education, the Wall Street Journal, and more.
“One of the nation’s great digital minds, she has written an immensely enjoyable omni-manifesto that’s officially about the brain science of attention. But the book also challenges nearly every assumption about American education. . .” // New York Times
Cathy has been a leading innovator of new ideas and methods for learning and professional development in school, in the workplace, and in everyday life. But what’s her story? When Cathy was young, she struggled to memorise a short passage of a famous speech to pass an exam. Her teacher noticed this, and had a hunch that it was not because she was unwilling or lazy, but that she just needed another method of testing. Her teacher then assigned Cathy a special assignment: write an essay about how she felt about the document. The catch was that she only had a day to do it.
10
The very next day, Cathy handed up a 200-page essay, an incredible amount of work for such a short time! Her teacher was impressed, and gave Cathy a ‘pass’: It was obvious that Cathy had a tremendous gift when it came to writing, even if she did have difficulty memorising word after word. It’s stories like this that sound the same for millions of children around the world. In many cases, children are simply not motivated because the subjects fail to capture their curiosity.
Education needs to change, to reflect how business and technology has evolved. From labouring in farms and factories, tomorrow’s workforce will have jobs that might mean working anywhere and at any time. Let us consider this: What if these new approaches do not require huge new classrooms or an overhaul of school resources? What if it means that we can take a fresh look at education. Cathy has devoted her work and research to just that idea: that education needs a different approach.
It’s not about doing different things. It’s about doing things differently! This is our tagline for this year’s conference, and we’re excited because Cathy’s ideas celebrate reimagination in this spirit! In fact, Cathy’s ideas have grown popular and have influenced her work, which has won her numerous accolades, including 2016’s Ernest L. Boyer Award. Cathy has served as Distinguished Professor and Director of the Futures Initiative at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, as well as the Ruth F. DeVarney Professor of English at Duke University. Cathy has been recognised for her work in education, and was appointed by President Obama to the National Humanities Council in 2011 for her to oversee grants for projects in culture and the humanities across the United States. Cathy also co-founded HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Sciences, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory) at CUNY, a network of educators dedicated to new models of learning for the digital age. Her latest book, “Now You See It”, has been widely applauded by reviewers and has been noted as ‘critically important’.
“The biggest problem is the increasing mismatch between traditional curricular standards of content-based instruction and the new forms of thinking required by our digital, distributed workplace.” //Cathy Davidson, Now You See It, 2011.
Cathy recounts how one of her teaching mentors found that games often helped her students understand subjects better. She would match younger children with older children to play a game. The game itself was simple - ask questions about a subject that would stump the other team. The idea was so effective that students stayed up late after class dreaming up difficult questions to ask the other team. In the process, they understood the subject matter thoroughly. Readers, it’s these types of ideas that we are exploring at Leaps of Knowledge: The Classroom Reimagined at the JW Marriott Hotel, KL on the 31st of October. If you are with us at the conference, welcome to a space where we look at things from another viewpoint! If you’re curious to learn more, explore the journey here in this issue of The Lilypad, and look out for more in our BM section (just flip over!). Like Cathy’s mentor’s story illustrated, it’s about taking something simple and doing it differently.
KEN WISSOKER
More alarming is the fact that 65% of all students walking into schools today will be applying for jobs that will only exist in the future. Cathy came to the conclusion that education has to be reimagined to give students the ability to gain skills that are not only useful, but are irreplaceable by outsourcing or to machines.
If you were curious about reimagining learning, imagine being able to jump into a bigger picture of global knowledge and how people think differently around the world! We are excited to introduce Ken Wissoker, the Editorial Director of Duke University Press who has worked to acquire books in anthropology, cultural studies and other areas in the humanities, social sciences, media, and the arts. In addition to his duties at the Press, he serves as Director of Intellectual Publics at The Graduate Center, CUNY in New York City. He has published close to 900 books which have won over 100 prizes, and will be taking stage at our conference!
If you’re a changemaker in education, our keynote is one session you do not want to miss out on! 11
“The Classroom Reimagined” is the theme of this year’s Leaps of Knowledge. We welcome teachers and parents into a space where they can try different ways of thinking about what already happens in the classroom in order to build a 21st-century learning experience for our children! Step into exhibition areas that showcase how classrooms can be reimagined: How can certain things be done differently in your classrooms? What are the improvements created by the changes made?

Plastic bottles
Single sock
When thrown away, they take a long time to biodegrade and will harm the environment. Why not use them to beautify the environment instead? Cut a rectangle from a plastic bottle, then ďŹ ll it with soil and plants. Hang it on a wall for your own wall garden!
Lost one sock from a pair? Don’t throw the other sock away! By wrapping the sock around a rectangular block of wood or something solid, you can use it as an eraser for your classroom whiteboard or chalkboard!
Old Jeans Do you have an old pair of jeans or trousers that are not the right size anymore? Cut out the pockets and sew them onto a piece of cloth to create a hanging storage for your sta room!

Our connections have been growing in classrooms across the planet! Local schools such as SJK(C) Choong Wen and SK Putrajaya Presint 9(1) have twinned with schools in the UK to conduct all manner of activities surrounding fellowship and digital literacy. From coding to Chinese New Year celebrations, to finding out how friends were spending their school holidays - connecting classrooms helped to accelerate the learning of students in participating classes. In classrooms at home, English proficiency soared. The concept of using technology in classrooms was of an exciting prospect to the Lemann Foundation! They’re our friends from Brazil, who are also reimagining education for students, thousands of miles away in South America. When they found about the technological transformation used to build 21st Century classrooms in Malaysia, they visited SJK(C) Choong Wen and SK Putrajaya Presint 9(1) to find out more!
Imagine a world where all classrooms are connected; and every child’s access to knowledge is not limited to his or her geographical location or background.
In turn, we were invited to share their stage at their Transformar Conference in São Paulo, Brazil, this past August. Transformar is Brazil’s leading event on education. The conference presented ideas that were transforming education in Brazil and around the world.
Every student, teacher and parent has access to the Internet, to access material like their school textbooks and communicate with each other for teaching and learning, collaboration and administration.
