Summer Social and Field Day

Written by Kathy Bellis On July 17, 2013, Student Life teamed up with The Front Page Newspaper and Phi Theta Kappa to bring FRCC students the first annual Summer Social and Field

Day. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. students, staff, and faculty enjoyed Sloppy Joe sandwiches, baked beans, chips, drinks, music, and games in front of Entrance 3. Competition heated up while participants raced tricycles, played tug of war, hit piñatas, played balloon toss, and competed in a water battle. For the more casual gamer, cookies were given out to winners of the cookie walk.

For Front Page Copy Editor, Robin OConnell, the event was, “...a big success and a whole

lot of fun!” She goes on to dare anyone brave enough to come back next summer to attempt to dethrone her as Queen of the Tricycles, saying, “I challenge anyone to a tricycle race because I am the champion!”

Over two hundred people attended the event, making it a huge success and a great way for everyone to let loose and have a good time.

The Front Page staff would like to thank everyone involved for making the day so much fun!

Hot Headlines

New York – The world’s smallest library is now open for business.

It is only able to fit one patron at a time in its bright yellow plastic building and has 40 books available for checkout.

New Zealand – Google recently launched 30 balloons from New Zealand to experiment with ways of providing affordable internet

access to the world. The balloons could beam 3G-speed internet to 4.8 billion people still not online.

Illinois –A non-profit has trained miniature horses to be used in therapy and is taking them to nursing homes, schools, veteran facilities, and hospitals.

Michigan – After leaving the drive-thru window at Taco Bell, one car of customers was surprised to find that instead of the burritos they had ordered, they had received $3600.00 in cash. They returned the cash and found out that an employee had accidentally handed them the register money that was supposed to go to the bank.

July 27, 2013 - The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum is featuring Free Coffee and Conversation with a Veteran. Navy veteran Bill Bacon will give a special talk about the history of the Medal of Honor and stories of the Medal of Honor recipients he has met.

The talk is from 9-11 a.m., and it is recommended to arrive at 8:30 a.m.

The museum is at 12 Gardens Center, Broomfield.

July 30, 2013 - Student Life will be sponsoring Finals Stress Relief outside of Student life from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

July 31, 2013 - The free finals breakfast is at 9:30 a.m. until all the food is gone, outside of Student Life.

July 31, 2013 - The City of Broomfield is hosting a free concert series, featuring David Correa and Cascada, combining Latin folk and

Rumba rhythms with middle eastern melodies to create a unique and fun style. Both shows are at 7:00 p.m.

The Broomfield Amphitheater is west of Lamar Street at the west end of the Community Park pond, at 3 Community Park Road, Broomfield.

August 10, 2013 - The 23rd Annual Westminster Faire is 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Westminster City Park, 10475 Sheridan Boulevard, Westminster. This year will feature two stages of entertainment, free fun for all ages, and vendor booths.

There will be a dog show, shopping, and food for the entire family.

August 14, 2013 - The Westminster Promenade free summer concert series featuring the Bella Luna Cirque show, on August 21 the country western Chris King Band.

All shows start at 6:30 p.m., lawn

August 14, 2013 Westminster Campus will be hosting three sessions for New Student Orientation at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. in the Rotunda at Entrance 2. You can resister online at www.frontrange.edu.

August 16, 2013 - Hotel Transylvania will be the next free movie at the Westminster City Park on Fridays. The park is located at 10465 Sheridan Boulevard, premovie activities start at 7:00 p.m. and movies begin at dusk.

August 27, 2013 - Free day at the Denver Botanic Gardens at 9 a.m-9 p.m. and is located at 1007 York Street.

Finishing the Summer Semester Strong Written by Rachel Padro

Now is game time—the last few weeks of the summer semester are here. We asked Gateway to College Faculty, Mara Gaiser what students ought to know in the weeks ahead.

Gaiser said, “The main thing is to look at a calendar and figure out everything you have to do outside of school—concerts, parties, vacations, and work. Then get out your syllabus, figure out everything that is due, and come up with a work plan.

Find slots between all of your life events to study, write that essay, or read that book. And then, if you can’t fit it all in, you may have to skip some of those life things, maybe a party or an event, but hopefully just

by being organized you won’t have to!”

When asked what students having difficulty with their classes should do, Gaiser said, “Now is the turning point! Talk to your instructor right now and get a game plan for passing.” She advises all students to look at instructor’s office hours. “Even if you are not failing, you should go to office hours at least once in the semester. That’s how you’ll figure out where your instructors are coming from, and what your priorities are in the coming weeks.”

Gaiser’s favorite study trick is to, “Figure out times when you are waiting, like for the bus, and

between classes, for reading and review.” Gaiser also suggested that students should also, “...make sure to talk to their instructors about 0’s for assignments that students think they’ve turned in. Sometimes instructors forget to put numbers in, sometimes they just leave it as a 0 before grading it, unintentionally making your grade look bad. Just don’t be afraid to ask. I think that is a big thing—a lot of students are afraid to just ask for help.”

So in these final weeks be brave enough to ask for what you need, and organize your life in order to enjoy the refueling of down time and the accomplishment that will come from study time.

FRCC Psychology Instructor and Academic Advisor Kristin Cowin shared how she is staying cool this summer.

Cowin said, “I do find that drinking a lot of cold refreshing ice teas, lemonades, and waters help me to stay cool. I also recommend that students remember it is summer time. Even if they are busy with work, family, and school, it is important for them to find some time for themselves so they can hit the reset button and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Colorado. So grab a cooler and some shade and take a moment for yourself!”

However you decide to beat the heat this summer, remember that it will end too soon, so enjoy each moment that you can.

Staying Entertained FRCC-style Written By Rachel Padro The summer semester moves quickly, and it’s easy to forget to take a break and savor some summer fun. We asked some FRCCians how they were keeping entertained this summer, and they have some great ideas.

FRCC student Kevin Cook has a busy schedule, but still finds time for fun and relaxation. Cook said, “I go to school Monday and Wednesday, work Friday and Saturday, but Sunday I do whatever I can, hiking at Boulder Creek is great. My girlfriend has a ten year old son, so we do fun stuff together, the Denver Art Museum, Rafting down Boulder Creek, or I try to look for festivals. I also make sure to take study breaks to go biking.”

FRCC student Brandon Adams also makes a point of keeping up with community schedules, but with a particular interest. “I find car shows to go to every weekend!”

Dan Balski, FRCC Coordinator of Clubs and Leadership, lives in Denver, and said, “There is so much to do in the city!” Dan mentioned concerts in the park as a great option for fun, as well as time with friends and family. “It seems like my calendar is booked, but all with good things, like vacation and weddings…”

FRCC student Saige Gerwig enjoys concerts as well, Gerwig said, “I just went to a Justin Bieber concert! He is my hero. It was perfect!”

Other students see the summer as a time for busying themselves with life enrichment, finding entertainment in their hobbies.

FRCC student Yu-Sheng Liu, more commonly known as Ichi, said, “I went camping recently, and that was entertaining, but personally, summer is a great time for working on my art.”

FRCC student Suzanne Cabral said that she is mostly in school or working, but when she can, she enjoys downtime by, “Settling back into a workout routine.”

FRCC student Ahmad Ahmadzay is also busy with school, but finds time to have fun keeping fit.“When I’m not doing school or working for IT, I spend my time playing sports.

basketball. I also make sure to go out every now and then.”

Personally, I have been reading some amazing books and seeing movies with my family. Remember to take advantage of the discount movie tickets that are available in student life and to take a break every now and then, it is summer after all.
