Coaches J u n Ya m a g u c h i College: Ohio State

Head Coach Jun Yamaguchi enters is second year as the head coach of the Frostburg State University men’s and women’s swimming teams in 2011-12. Last year, Yamaguchi led the Bobcats through their first year as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. The Bobcat men and women swept NCAA Division II Davis & Elkins while the men posted wins over Bethany (W.Va.) and a first-place showing at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. At the CAC Championships, Yamaguchi led the women to a seventh-place finish while the men were sixth. Prior to FSU, Yamaguchi served as an assistant swimming coach at DePauw University for three years. The Tigers won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in each of those three seasons while the coaching staff was named the SCAC Staff of the Year in 2007-08 and 2009-10. He also served as an aquatic staff member, student intern and team assistant for The Ohio State University men’s varsity swimming team from 2004-07. The Buckeyes finished inside the top-30 at the NCAA National Championships all three years, posted a 10-1 record in ‘05 and turned out three All-Americans during that stretch. Outside of coaching swimming, Yamaguchi is heavily involved in triathlons as has served as a coach at various professional levels over the last five years. He developed his own elite triathlon

program that helps individuals interested in the sport by offering coaching analysis. In July ‘08, he was an assisant coach for the USA National Triathlon team at the Kitzbuhel International Triathlon Union World Cup. He has also served an assistant coach at the Hyvee World Cup (July ‘07), USAT Youth National Championship (August ‘06), Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. (Februray and March ‘07) and has volunteered at the USAT Level I Coaching Certification clinic hosted by the USAT National Congress. While at Ohio State, Yamaguchi served as the head coach of the triathlon club for one year. He created and managed training programs and became a USA Triathlon Level I Coach. Yamaguchi also has a background in distance running as he was an assisant coach for the Hilliard Davidson High School boy’s and girl’s cross country teams (2004-05) and has been a coach/ camp counselor at the Running School in White Lake, N.Y. since August 2004. Yamaguchi graduated with his bachelor’s degree from OSU in school and physical activity and educational services with a concentration in coaching and sports management in 2006. He also received his master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in coaching from Indiana State University in August of 2010.

2011-12 Season Preview With seven returners on the men’s side and three returners on the women’s side, the Frostburg State University men’s and women’s swimming teams bring a lot of experience and talent to the 20112012 season. Head coach Jun Yamaguchi enters his second season as the head men’s and women’s swimming coach at Frostburg. Last season, Yamaguchi led the Bobcats to three wins on the men’s side and the women to a victory over Davis and Elkins. This season, Yamaguchi’s primary goal is to win more meets, but also looks to grow the two rosters and be more successful in conference. “We are looking to win and to get personal bests. I want to advance more swimmers to the finals of the conference meet,” Yamaguchi said. On the women’s side all three of the women’s swimmers return to provide experience and leadership to the team. “They are not just upperclassmen, but are very experienced swimmers. All have great ability and strong leadership skills. Those swimmers will be the key to our success,” Coach Yamaguchi said. Jessica Rice returns after earning six victories last season in the 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard breaststroke. Rice also finished 16th in 200-yard IM and 14th in the 200-yard breaststroke at the CAC Championships. Samantha Mulvey also had a strong sophomore season after swimming to eleven victories last season including two each against Gallaudet, Davis and Elkins, and Pitt-Bradford. Mulvey primarily competed in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events last season. The final returner for the Bobcat women is Erica Minor. Minor won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke last year against Davis and Elkins. She placed 11th in the 100-meter backstroke and 14th in the 200-meter IM at the CAC Championships last season. Yamaguchi’s first female recruiting class is a large one with five freshman joining the team. “It is very exciting that we add five freshman to the women’s side. All of the freshman come from pretty competitive club teams.” Elizabeth Jarrell has been impressive so far in the preseason. Jarrell is a distance swimmer and will compete in the butterfly races as well. Anne Smith will compete in the distance races and is one of the most talented swimmers on the team. Yamaguchi feels that she has the ability to reach the consolation finals of the conference championships this season. Jaclyn Franzak is a butterflyer and has been impressive in preseason. Hannah Edler joins the team as sprint freestyler, but suffered a pre-season injury that will keep her out until midseason, and Haylee King was a late addition to the squad. Jessica Rice had high praise for the freshman from what she has seen so far, “I don’t think some of the freshman realize how well they’re doing. Hannah is going to do wonderful in her sprints after recovering from her injury. Jackie is our main flyer, and Elizabeth is going to add a lot to our team.” The men’s team will feature a lot of familiar faces this season as it returns seven swimmers from last season and have only one newcomer. Despite the low numbers, Yamaguchi feels that his overall talent level is much higher. The men’s top returners are juniors Bob Norr and Caleb Stair. Norr won three freestyle races last years and finished in the top-five in all of his appearances except for one. Stair competed in butterfly and freestyle races last season and posted twelve victories with six coming in the 100-yard butterfly. “Those two have been doing more intense workouts, and the key to the team will be if someone can step up and begin to compete on their level,” added Yamaguchi. Sophomores Zawdi Coke and Tyler Lydon are the most likely candidates to step up. Lydon had a successful freshman campaign and finished in the top-five in each race he competed in last season and competed primarily in the freestyle events. Sprinter Vincent Faiella also returns for the Bobcats. Faiella had two victories in his freshman season and looks to keep improving in his second season at Frostburg. The lone newcomer to the team is Jeffrey Page, who is looking to make an impact in the freestyle and butterfly events. Sophomore Jesse Gregory is also looking to step up this season. Gregory competed in the breaststroke last season and is expecting a breakout season not only from himself, but from the team as well. “We all work hard and now that Jun is here for the whole season more people are in better shape and are ready to breakout,” Gregory said. Yamaguchi agreed with Gregory and noted that the team feels much fitter at this point of the season than last year. “They are doing the workouts now that we were doing in December last year, so we are two months ahead of where we were last year,” Yamaguchi said. The Bobcats open the season when they travel to Salisbury on Oct. 16, before returning home against Gallaudet and Davis & Elkins on Oct. 22. The Bobcats do not swim at home again until Dec. 3 against West Virginia Wesleyan, their only meet in Dec. After Christmas break, the Bobcats take on Pitt-Bradford at home on Jan. 7. FSU then gets back to Capital Athletic Conference play on Jan. 13 at St. Mary’s. The only other non-conference meet of the season comes against Bethany, a meet Yamaguchi feels is winnable for both squads. Frostburg concludes the season at the CAC Championships at St. Mary’s on Feb. 17-19.

About Frostburg State From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students. Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres. Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located. Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has

About Frostburg State resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
