2013-14 Season Preview
YOUNG
A different style of play both offensively and defensively is a given when a head coach takes over the reins of a program for the first time. But what first-year head coach Cathy Parson was quick to point out is the utter excitement surrounding the players and coaches as the Frostburg State women’s basketball team heads for its season-opening tournament this Friday at Bobcat Arena. “I think the players are truly excited for the new system that’s in place,” said Parson. “We have a lot of potential and talent in the program and we are only going to get better.” The cornerstones of Parson’s new style of play will be an up-tempo offense mixed with a pressure defense. Under Parson’s direction, her new-look Bobcats will play faster on offense, while frustrating opponents with a press defense. “From the start I wanted to become a running team with a faster tempo on the offensive end,” added Parson. “With that said, we want to frustrate our opponents with a press defense. We (coaching staff) continue to teach the team new defensive schemes every day in practice.” Indeed, excitement and different styles of play are evident in Coach Parson’s everyday regiment at practice, but the final cornerstone comes from mastering the fundamentals. “We (coaching staff) continue to coach the basic fundamentals of every phase of the game of basketball,” added Parson. “If we continue to develop the basics on both offense and especially defense, we have the potential to shock some people this season, both in and out of the CAC.” Point Guard Junior Ronje’ James enters her third season as the starting point guard for the Bobcats. A year ago, the Baltimore City, Md. native appeared in all 26 games, making 22 starts. A quick and shifty guard, James finished second on the team in free throws made (61), free throw percentage (.744), assists (51) and steals (58), while finishing third in scoring average (10.2), points (265) and field goals made (100). Senior Tamara Maxwell returns to the 2013 squad after taking a year off and will see time at point guard. As a junior she made six appearances and will fight to get more minutes this season. “Tamara is phenomenal when we press; she has great hands defensively.” Guards The Bobcats top returning scorer will be featured at the shooting guard position this season. Elaina Hummel will be looking to lean on her long-ball stroke and strength at the free throw line for her final year in a Bobcat uniform. Hummel has been the cornerstone of the FSU offensive attack for the last three years and enters her senior season just 93 points shy of reaching the 1,000-point mark. Hummel was the only Bobcat to start all 26 games a season ago and led the team in points (344), points per game (13.2), three-point field goals made (37), free throw percentage (.861), free throws made (105) and minutes played (908, 34.9 min/game). Hummel currently stands second in school history for most three-point field goals made (125) and highest three-point percentage (35.6). She is also FSU’s career leader in free throw percentage at 88.1%. Junior Simone Wise will also fit into the mix at the shooting guard spot as well as the small forward position. She returns for the 2013-14 campaign after a year’s absence. Wise brings versatility and quickness to the floor and made an impact for the Bobcats as a freshman; posting 103 points, 14 steals, 22 assists and 58 rebounds. Junior swing player Kyler Redmond returns to the squad after battling an injury throughout preseason. As a freshman in 2011-12, she appeared in 12 games and finished with 49 points, 53 rebounds, six steals and six assists before suffering a season-ending injury. Once healthy, Redmond will take a more permanent role in the lineup at the three
4
spot. Sophomores Bria Jones and Brionna Hall will also add valuable depth to the guard positions. “Bria has the ability to be a game changer; she can shoot and does whatever our coaching staff asks of her,” said Parson. With a full year of experience under her belt, Hall will look to make a bigger impact on the team this season. She brings hard work and the ability to create havoc defensively in the press. Hall appeared in 22 games and scored nine points in the first round of the CAC playoffs against York (Pa.) last season.

Forwards Sophomore Courtney Young returns to the post position after logging in quality minutes in her first year of collegiate play a season ago. The coaching staff is expecting Young to have a splendid year anchoring the post. She has been a pleasant surprise throughout preseason with her ability to shoot the ball along with her strong presence on defense. Young started 16 of her 24 appearances last season while contributing 43 points and 61 rebounds. Young’s counterpart down low this season is expected to be junior transfer Jasmine Walker. A member of the Frederick Community College team last season, she appeared in 28 games, while averaging 8.7 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per contest. The 6-0 forward also contributed 20 blocks last season. The coaching staff is impressed with her progress and she has picked up the press coverage exceptionally well. Junior Lindsey Perkins is the squad’s only other forward that stands at six feet tall. Perkins, after taking a year’s hiatus, will look to make a bigger impact in this year’s lineup. “Lindsey is very athletic and has worked hard on her fundamentals all throughout preseason.” Versatile classmate Bobbi McDonald returns for her third year with plenty of game experience under her belt. The Claysburg, Pa. native has impressed the coaching staff with her athleticism and her ability to be coached. McDonald started 11 of 26 appearances while averaging 2.9 rebounds per game and 2.3 points per game. “Bobbi has been doing a fantastic job in preseason; she is a very coachable and intelligent player that will contribute good minutes this season.” Also fighting for floor time at the forward position is sophomore Deara Parker. In her first year as a Bobcat, she appeared in 25 games and finished fourth on the team in total rebounds (101) and rebounds per game (4.0). Parker was second in offensive rebounds with 38 and fourth in defensive rebounds with 63. The coaching staff will look to rely on Parker to grab rebounds and contribute good minutes in the paint. Schedule The Bobcats open their season at home with the 11th Annual Jim Crawley Invitational. Frostburg State, King’s, Gettysburg and William Patterson will be competing for the TipOff Tournament Championship. The tournament should be a good bench-mark for the Bobcats as Gettysburg (21-7) captured a conference championship last season while King’s (21-6) and William Patterson (21-8) finished second in their conferences behind solid seasons. William Patterson is currently ranked 18th in the nation, according to the D3hoops.com preseason poll. Fighting for a top spot among a very competitive Capital Athletic Conference, Frostburg will face tough competition every contest. CAC newcomer Christopher Newport (29-3) currently stands at No. 3 in the country and was picked to win the CAC in its first season. Perennially tough Marymount (24-5) and Mary Washington (20-7) were slated to finish second and third, respectively, in the league. The Bobcats open their season this Friday (Nov. 15) as they host King’s College at 6:00 pm.

About Frostburg

B O B C ATS
From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.
Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which
housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.
Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University
owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.
Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed
the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
