2014-15 Season Preview

Under new leadership, the Frostburg State women’s basketball team looks to start a new chapter in Bobcat basketball in its 51st season.

JAMES

Carrie Saunders will take over head coaching duties after serving as the graduate assistant for the past two seasons. The Bobcats have seen steady improvement over the last two seasons with Saunders as an assistant. Frostburg increased its win total in each season, and capped the 2013-14 campaign with five wins in its final nine games. Saunders has a healthy mix of veterans and rookies to carry the team for the 2014-15 season. Most notably returning for the Bobcats is senior guard Ronje’ James. James was second on the team in scoring last year after averaging 14.4 points a game and enters her senior season with 776 points to her credit and is averaging 10.4 points a game for her career. “She brings a strong understand of the fundamentals of the game and is always a scoring threat when on the court,” remarked Coach Saunders. “As a senior, she is ready and prepared to give all that she has for her last season and has the ability to be a difference maker whenever she is in the game for us.” Senior Jasmine Walker joins James as one of the two returning seniors to the team. “Walker has really come into her own as an offensive threat and as one of the tallest girls on a shorter team, has stepped her defensive game up and is ready to defend taller post players” remarked Saunders. Walker led the team with 22 blocks a year ago and will be looked to as a strong presence under the basket this year again. The 6-0 forward led the team with 163 rebounds a year ago.

ship to get through our defensive schemes and transitions on offense.” Young’s mid-range jumper will be crucial for the Bobcats’ offense this season as she is coming off an impressive sophomore season where she posted 113 points and was third on the team averaging 5.1 rebounds a game.

YOUNG

The Bobcats welcome a duo of freshmen that will be looked upon to take a leadership role early in their careers. Tajaia Tillman and Adjowa Pinkrah will lead the newcomers this season. “We haven’t even tapped into Tillman and Pinkrah’s capabilities yet and they are already showing that they are strong offensive threats and will be strong defensively for us over the next four years” commented Saunders on her pair of freshmen. “Our non-conference schedule is a good mix for us to see where we are before heading into conference play. The CAC is one of the toughest DIII conferences but with a lot of turnover in the last couple of years, we are primed to be competitive and upset some teams this year as we come together as a team,” remarked Saunders. The Bobcats open the 2014-15 season as they host Westminster in the opening round of the 12th Annual Jim Crawley Tournament on Saturday at 6:00 pm.

Junior Bria Jones is the spark on the court the team needs on both sides of the ball. “Jones is the type of player that will give 100% no matter what on every play and provides a key spark on offense that this team needs” noted Saunders on her quick 5-5 guard. “If anything, Jones needs to be less ‘unselfish’ with the ball as she has a great shot and will provide a solid scoring threat for us” continued Saunders. Last season, Jones handed out 24 assists and posted 56 points in 25 games.

JONES

Rounding out the returning core of four players for FSU is junior Courtney Young. Returning from offseason surgery, Young entered preseason strong and is a very intelligent basketball player. “Young holds the team together on the court and provides strong leader-

About Frostburg

FrostburgSports.com

B O B C ATS

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which

housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University

owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.

Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed

the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
