HEAD COACH WEBB HATCH

WEBB HATCH HEAD COACH 17th Season at Frostburg Webb Hatch begins his 17th season as the head men’s basketball coach at Frostburg State University as well as his 42nd year of coaching. In his first 16 years at the helm, Hatch has guided the Bobcats to 193 overall wins including 90 in the AMCC and 30 in their first five years as a member of the CAC. The winningest coach in the program’s 73-year history, Hatch has also led FSU to one Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament championship, a pair of AMCC Tournament second-place finishes and one Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region Runner-Up showing. A season ago, Frostburg finished with a 10-15 overall record and barely missed out on the CAC Tournament. In late November, the Bobcats upset then 13th-ranked Randolph Macon 76-67, part of a four-game winning streak for the Bobcats. In 2013-14, FSU finished the year 3-22 with a 2-14 slate in the CAC. The Bobcats finished second in the CAC in rebounding (37.5) and fifth in blocks (2.7 per game). Senior Jabari Kamau finished his junior season fourth in the league in rebounding, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game. In 2012-13, FSU finished with 10 wins and earned a berth in the CAC Tournament following a fifth-place regular-season finish. The Bobcats finished third in the conference in scoring (69.8), third in rebounding (35.2) and third in field goals made (643). Senior Christian Jackson finished second in NCAA Division III in scoring (25.8), set FSU’s single-season scoring mark and finished just seven points shy of setting the CAC scoring record. In 2011-12, Frostburg posted an even 13-13 overall record, but grabbed 10 wins in the CAC and made a trip to the CAC Tournament. Frostburg led the league in scoring (72.4), tied for the conference lead in steals (9.7) and finished second in field goals (682), three-pointers (158), offensive rebounding (13.4) and assists (12.9). In 2010-11, Hatch became the school’s all-time winningest coach after leading the team to 11 wins. With a victory over Stevenson in mid-January, Hatch surpassed Oscar Lewis for the all-time wins mark. Hatch and the Bobcats kicked off the 2010-11 season in fine fashion with three-straight victories and the 2010 Pride of Maryland Tournament Championship. FSU downed No. 11 ranked St. Mary’s in the title game to capture the school’s first title in the POM Tournament. Prior to joining the CAC, Hatch led the Bobcats through 11 years in the AMCC that included 146 overall wins and 90 in the league. Hatch guided Frostburg to nine appearances in the AMCC Tournament and two berths in the league champion-

In 2000-01, the Bobcats finished 20-10 and captured their only AMCC Tournament championship and earned a berth to the ECAC Southern Region Championship Tournament for the eighth time in school history. his first season, Hatch’s second squad went 20-10 (8-4 AMCC), the biggest improvement from the previous season by any NCAA Division III program in the country. Hatch came to Frostburg after having served as an assistant at Virginia Military Institute, his alma mater, for the 1998-99 season. Prior to his stint at VMI, Hatch was the first-ever head men’s basketball coach at Division III Marymount University in Arlington, Va., for 10 seasons, where he also served as the school’s assistant athletic director and sports information director. Hatch led Marymount to a 13-9 record in his debut season. In 1990-91, he earned Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Saints to the CAC regular-season championship and a 16-11 overall record. He also led Marymount to an 18-10 record and the CAC Tournament championship in 1991-92. His Marymount teams also advanced to the CAC tournament championship game in the 1990-91 and 1995-96 seasons. Prior to Marymount, Hatch served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Va., from 1977 to 1987, where he helped coach the Marlins to two Dixie Conference championships and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Additionally, Hatch served as head coach at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk, Va., from 1975 to 1977. He coached the boys’ team to a 23-3 record and the VAAC championship in the 1976-77 season, and he was also an assistant football coach and social studies teacher at the school. Hatch began his coaching career as an assistant at Prince George (Va.) High

As a senior in ‘12, Williams became the program’s first All-Capital Athletic Conference selection after being named to the first team. A Columbus Ohio native, Williams led the CAC during his final year in scoring, offensive rebounding and free throw percentage. He was named team MVP and recorded six doubledoubles. Williams returns to FSU after spending the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach at Salisbury University. The Sea Gulls won the CAC Tournament Title for the first time since the 1995-96 season and defeated Eastern Connecticut State (66-54) in the NCAA Tournament. After Salisbury, Williams coached briefly at St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md., before returning to Frostburg. Williams was an assistant head coach at Eastern University for two years from 2012-14. During his tenure, the team improved its win total in the 2013-14 season and finished as the most improved team in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Williams had a hand in recruiting, video coordinating and he served as the head coach of the JV team. Williams also brings experience at the junior college level as a volunteer assistant at Richard Bland College in Petersburg, Virginia. SEASON PREVIEW It won’t take long to figure out the strength of the 2015-16 Frostburg men’s basketball team. A quick glance at the roster and you’ll notice not only 21 names, but more importantly eight seniors with impressive talent. In a preseason interview, 17th-year head coach Webb Hatch was quick to point out that his eight seniors are certainly key to this year’s team and its success.

HENSON

However, he was also quick to point out that the depth of his perimeter will carry the

Bobcats and just happens to include several of those seniors.

The trio of guard James Peters, forward Shawn Henson and guard Nick Smoot return

for their final seasons and headline a deep senior class and talented Bobcat lineup.

A year ago Frostburg posted 10 wins and narrowly missed a spot in the CAC

Tournament, a hurdle that Hatch and his team would no doubt like to overcome this year. Hatch enters his 17th season just seven wins short of 200 at the helm of the FSU program and he has the talent to surpass that mark early in the season. Offensive Seniors Frostburg returns six of its top eight scorers and its top two three-point shooters from last year’s team that finished fourth in the CAC in baskets (619) and sixth in both points per game (67.7) and three-pointers (154).

Peters and Smoot have taken their turns leading the Bobcats in scoring over the last

two seasons. Peters averaged 16.7 ppg following the 2013-14 season and led the way in both scoring and three-pointers (35). Fast forward a year to ‘14-15 and it was Smoot’s turn to lead the offense. Smoot averaged 12 ppg and drained a team-best 54 three-pointers.

Henson will play in a hybrid type of role for the Bobcats as he can play both in the

post and on the perimeter. He scored 150 points and grabbed 70 rebounds as a junior and will push for a starting spot among this year’s deep roster.

Rounding out the group of seniors is forward Torrell Goodman and forward Breon

Powell. Goodman scored 127 points and finished with 61 boards. Meanwhile, Powell finished fourth on the roster with 70 rebounds to go along with 109 points. Speaking of Perimeter While Peters and Smoot have combined for 116 three-pointers over the last two seasons, a pair of sophomores refuse to be overlooked and will push the upperclassmen for playing time.

“Behind our seniors, our strength will be the depth at our perimeter,” said Hatch. “We

have plenty of talent with little drop off between the seniors and underclassmen.”

Sophomores Tyler Michael and Chris Coston appeared in a combined 35 games a

year ago and will play a larger role this season. Michael was fourth on the team in scoring (8.9) and was second with 41 three-pointers. In the Post Last season, Zachary Coalmon burst on the scene with a school record 10 blocks in a win over Randolph in late November. At 6-8, he is one of the tallest players in the CAC and he finished the season fifth in the CAC behind 30 rejections. This season, Coalmon will be joined in the paint by 6-7 freshman Johnson Ogunyoye. The coaching staff has high expectations for the duo both in their shot blocking ability and rebounding.

Sophomore Dalton Gaus and Jeffrey McMorris should also see playing time at the

post or power forward positions. At the Point A duo of players will be competing for time at the point this fall; senior Quinton Dodson and freshman Tavari Merriman.

Dodson, a left-hander, appeared in 15 games and made four starts in 2013-14 and

handed out 34 assists. Merriman is an extremely quick player with the potential to be a contributor as he adjusts to the college game.
