Carrie Saunders Head Coach Second Season Carrie Saunders enters her second year as the head coach of the Frostburg State women’s basketball team in 2015-16. The Bobcats enter the season with plenty of momentum after capping the 2014-15 campaign with five wins in their final eight games. FSU finished 6-19 overall and was runner-up at the Jim Crawley Tournament. Saunders took over the reins of the program after serving as a graduate assistant for the last two years. The Bobcats have seen steady improvement over the last two seasons with Saunders as an assistant. Frostburg increased its win total in each season, and capped the 2013-14 campaign with five wins in its final nine games. The Bobcats scored 19 points per game higher than a year ago (2012-13) and finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference at 68.8 ppg. In addition to its improved scoring, FSU led the league in offensive rebounds (17.3) and finished second in total rebounds (42.5), steals (13.2) and blocks (3.4). Saunders came to Frostburg after a four-year playing career at NCAA Division II Shepherd University. She finished 14th in school history in scor-
ing and ranked second in field goals made and attempts during her career. As a junior, she was the recipient of both the Coach’s Award and Sara Cree Distinguished Athlete honor. Saunders completed her master’s degree in education from Frostburg State this past May and received her bachelor’s degree in communication and new media from Shepherd in 2011.

2015-16 Season Preview
B O B C ATS
Defense, defense, defense. That’s the theme for the 2015-16 edition of the Frostburg State women’s basketball team. For a team that was second overall and third in Capital Athletic Conference play with 12.5 steals per game, secondyear head coach Carrie Saunders sounds hopeful for the upcoming season.
YOUNG
A slew of freshmen will also be competing for spots in the starting lineup, including Bryce Papp and Carissa Shepko. “Bryce is a great shooter and she works hard every day. She wants to be successful,” said Saunders.
With just four returning players, Saunders is looking towards a mix of returners and newcomers to make an immediate impact. Senior Courtney Young and sophomore Adjowa Pinkrah are two returners who played in all 25 games for the Bobcats last season and Saunders will be looking to them to help lead the young Bobcats. Young was second on the team last year with 132 rebounds and will have a huge impact during her senior year. “She has worked extremely hard in the summer and in preseason; she’s gotten into great shape and we’ll be looking to her to play a lot of minutes this year. She can shoot the ball well and we’re working on her post moves, so I really have high expectations for her,” states Saunders. Overshadowed last year by several seniors who have now graduated, Pinkrah, a 5’ 8” guard, will look to step into a role of her own. “Adjowa Pinkrah is another returner that is working extremely hard. There’s a role that I need her to fill and she’s filling it. She’s strong, she’s aggressive and once she figures out herself in the game of basketball, she’s going to be a force.” Another returner that will contribute early on is sophomore guard Kache Fields. She appeared in 22 games with 11 starts and was third on the team last year with 53 assists. “Kache is a good on-ball defender and we are looking for her to fill a role on the offensive side of the court,” added Saunders.

“She’s a powerhouse. She’s an undersized post player, but she has the tenacity to take on anyone, so that’s going to really help us on the defensive side of the court. I’m looking to her to rebound the ball every single night.”
“Our defense is going to be constant; it’s going to be ever-present this year. We want defense from the tip, all the way to the end of the game,” Saunders elaborated. “Defense creates offense, and everything we do centers around what we do on the defensive end.”

To go along with her key returners, Coach Saunders brought in a solid group of newcomers, beginning
“Carissa is a pure shooter and is a definite offensive threat.” Along with Papp and Shepko, freshmen Jasmin Tirado-Viscalla and Megan Kelly will battle for the point guard position. “Everyone’s going to play a role this year and that’s something special as we build this program and move forward.” Despite just a handful of returning players, Saunders can already see the makings of a good team. “We have sharp minds on this team so our understanding of the game is getting there and along with that, we can shoot the ball well this year. I think between those things, we can become very powerful. With strong minds and strong basketball intellect, you can push them daily. As we play together – we’re a young team – we will mold into the team we envision, so it’s always a good to start off with strong minds.” In just her second year at the helm, Saunders has her eyes set on the conference postseason. “Our goal is to make the CAC Tournament. That’s been a goal of mine since I’ve taken over the program.” After finishing the 2014-15 season with a 6-19 overall record, the coaching staff has set expectations to meet the team’s goal. ”As far as expectations, as far as my players, I want everyone to improve, and that’s the biggest thing for this team and for this program, to have those kids every single day improve on their craft in order for the program to reach the goal of the CAC Tournament.” “I’m looking for a positive year and all of us have goals and we all want to meet those goals, so it’s time for us to make that move in the CAC.” The Bobcats open the 2015-16 season on the road on Monday, November 16 when they travel to La Roche for a 7:00 pm tipoff. FSU’s home opener is scheduled for Friday, November 20 when the red and black play host to St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) in the opening game of the Jim Crawley Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.

About Frostburg
FrostburgSports.com
B O B C ATS
From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.
Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which
housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.
Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University
owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.
Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed
the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
