2016-17 Season Preview
After two preseason scrimmages, the Frostburg State women’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2016-17 season, which begins Tuesday.
FIELDS
COACHING STAFF Carrie Saunders leads the Bobcats into her third season as the Frostburg State women’s basketball head coach in 2016-17. Saunders served as a graduate assistant with the Bobcats for two seasons before taking the reins of the women’s basketball program.
The coaching staff is pleased with the progression the Bobcats’ have shown to this point in the season. “I think our team is really starting to learn my system and really starting to buy into it,” Saunders said. “We’re a really scrappy team that can get after it this year, but we also can slow it down when necessary.” BY THE NUMBERS Frostburg collected three wins and finished as the runner-up in the Jim Crawley Tournament last year. The Bobcats finished fifth in the CAC in offensive rebounding (14.8), sixth in assists (12.5), sixth in blocks (3.5), seventh in total rebounding (39.2) and eighth in three-pointers made (86). AROUND THE CAC Frostburg State received 14 points in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll released earlier this month. The Bobcats were projected just two points behind Southern Virginia. FAMILIAR FACES Frostburg returns four players from last year who started in a combined 79 games. The Bobcats have a good mix of youth and experience returning, as they bring back two sophomores and two seniors starters from last season.

The list of returning players is headlined by senior forward Kirsten Rayner (right), who finished sixth in the CAC in scoring, averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in 2015-16.
RAYNER
Frostburg will also get a boost from senior guard Kache Fields (left), who averaged 7.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game a season ago.
Marrysa Moyer will join Saunders for her second season as an assistant coach in 2016-17. Moyer is a 2015 graduate of Lock Haven University, where she played basketball for three seasons with the Bald Eagles in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East division.

Sophomore guard Megan Kelly returns as the team’s second-leading scorer from a year ago, notching 8.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Junior Adjowa Pinkrah rounds out the returning starters, starting in 12 games and averaging 6.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in 2015-16. Other returners looking to contribute include sophomore guard Jasmin TiradoViscalla. Tirado-Viscalla played in 24 games last season, starting two. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Despite all of the returners, Frostburg adds a wealth of versatile new talent to this year’s roster. The Bobcats’ seven newcomers outnumber the six returning players on the roster. Two newcomers that should see plenty of playing time down low are freshman forwards Sydney Stotler and Amanda Emory. Junior guard Alexis Welch and freshman guard Victoria Yoder are both long and lanky defenders who can score the basketball. Saunders also added two players who will split time at the point guard position, junior Sharyce Warren and sophomore Victoria Diggs. Saunders noted the high basketball IQ that both guards possess. Freshman guard Chloe Bennett will add depth and fight for playing time this season. Saunders believes that the addition of the newcomers will help provide the returning players a bigger support system. “We’ve definitely filled all the gaps we needed to fill,” Saunders said. WHAT’S AHEAD Despite playing in the highly-competitive CAC, the Bobcats are not overlooking non-conference play. “We just focus on us and take it one game at a time,” Saunders said. Frostburg will open its regular-season on the road against Waynesburg on Tuesday, November 16. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.

About Frostburg
FrostburgSports.com
B O B C ATS
From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has grown to a present day enrollment of nearly 5,000 students.
Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which
housed classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the Performing Arts Center and the new Compton Science Center, all situated on 260 beautiful acres.
Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University
owes its existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers, raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s first building, is located.
Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed
the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education. The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education, philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training. Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities for the region and the state. In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 11 of the state’s 13 public institutions. Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study, FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations. At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance. Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educational needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States, but also the world. These students have a choice of over 40 major programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-professional programs are offered. Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which now spans over a century.
